Bolivar Tiger Defensive Philosophy

1. Know the Big Picture

Defense is a big puzzle. Each of you are a piece of the puzzle and each defensive play is a
different picture. You must know where the other pieces fit, so you can fit your
piece in the right place. Play Einstein Ball! This means we are looking for smart
football players. The best players know :
Every Alignment
Every Assignment
Down and Distance
Time on the Clock
Tendencies of the Opponent

2. Fundamentals
We must be EXTORDIANARY IN THE ORDINARY! We will focus on many fundamentals of
defense, but these we must be GREAT at:
Tackling
Defeating Blocks
Running to the Ball

3. Control What You Can Control

As a football player, there are many things that are out of your control:
Weather
Officials
What The Coach Calls
You cant let these outside circumstance dictate the way you play. There are also many
things you can control:
Effort
Attitude
Knowing Your Role

No Excuses, No Explanations, Get the Job Done!

TALENT IS NEVER ENOUGH

Talent might get you noticed but it wont keep you there. Success requires
hard work. To achieve your potential you also need these 10 things to turn
TALENT into RESULTS!!
1. Belief lifts your talent: Lack of belief in yourself can act as a ceiling on
talent.
2. Passion energizes your talent: A passionate person with limited talent will
outperform a passive person who possesses greater talent.
3. Preparation positions your talent: Becoming more intentional. You can
claim to be surprised once; after that, youre unprepared.
4. Practice sharpens your talent: Practice demands discipline and embracing
change.
5. Perseverance sustains your talent: People who display perseverance keep a
larger vision in mind as they toil away at their craft or profession.
6. Courage tests your talent: As we develop our talent and grow to our
potential we will be tested continually. Courage is an everyday virtue.
7. Coachability expands your talent: Coachability is not so much about
competence and mental capacity as it is about attitude. It is the desire to listen,
learn, and apply. Talented people can be the toughest to teach because they
often think they know it all. Its a problem of pride.
8. Character protects your talent: People cannot climb beyond the limitations
of their character. Talented people are sometimes tempted to take shortcuts.
Character prevents that.
9. Relationships influence your talent: Life is too short to spend it with people
who pull you in the wrong direction. And its too short not to invest in others.
Your relationships will define you.
10. Teamwork multiplies your talent: Teamwork divides the effort and
2011 Bolivar Tigers Defense
multiples the effect.

2011 Weekly Defensive Goals

1. Hold opponent under 21 points

2. Hold opponent under 175 yards rushing
3. 3 or less explosive plays (20 yards +) per game
4. Force 3 turnovers
5. Force 4 Three & Outs
6. Score on Defense
7. Win 60% of Third Downs

If we can do these 7 things, then we will be in a

position to WIN EVERY BALL GAME

GAPS and Alignment Techniques

GAPS- Gaps go from the shoulders of one offensive lineman to the shoulder of the
offensive lineman directly next to him. Gaps are not spots on the field. Gaps move
with the offensive linemen.

ALIGNMENTS TECHNIQUES- are used to tell the defensive line exactly who to
line over and where exactly to align. Linebacker alignments are marked by
adding the number zero to the end of an alignment. For example, the
alignment head up on the guard is call a 2 technique. A linebacker aligned over
a guard is called a 20 technique.

Defensive Terminology
PERSONNEL DESCRIPTIONS
TACKLE (T) - They must be physical players that can hold their own at the line
of scrimmage, but are quick enough to run line stunts; such as slanting or
stemming (changing alignment just prior to the snap to disrupt blocking
schemes) when asked to. Their base alignment is a 4 technique.
NOSE GUARD (N) The nose is critical to this defense. He must command a
double team to help keep his Mike backer free. Our most physical defensive
lineman will play here. His base alignment is a 0 technique.
MIKE (M) - Mike is our toughest linebacker and number one run stopper. He
needs to be able to defeat blocks and stuff his gap. He must take good angles
and must be a GREAT tackler. He is aligned stacked behind the Nose at 4 yards.
INSIDE BACKER (B) These players are physical, aggressive, and fast. They are
responsible for stuffing the run to their side and playing the cutback on runs
away from them. They will be used heavily in our stunt packages to confuse
and pressure the offense. They must take good angles and must be GREAT
tacklers. Their base alignment is stacked behind the Tackle at 4 yards. In
some fronts they will also line up as a defensive end in a 6 or 9 technique.
DOG (D) These players are the outside linebackers. They must be fast and
physical as they must play the run and the pass. They must be GREAT tacklers.
Their base alignment is 1 yard outside the end man on the LOS and 3 yards
deep. They have flat responsibility on a pass.
CORNER (C) The corners play a traditional role in the 3-3 stack defense. They
are pass first defenders and secondary force players. They must possess good
speed and pass coverage abilities along with the willingness to come up and
stick when the play dictates. Their base alignment is 5-7 yards from #1 receiver
with outside position.
FREE SAFETY (FS) The free safety needs to be a smart ball player as he is the
leader of the secondary. Should also posses good speed and be a sure tackler
as the safety will often be the difference in stopping the long TD. His base
alignment is 10 yards deep in the middle of the offensive formation.

Defensive Terminology
HUDDLE PROCEDURE
The Nose Guard will set the huddle at the football. Mike will get the signal
from the sideline and relay the call to the rest of the defense. For efficient
communication the huddle should be organized as follows.

M
DTNTD
C B F B C
In the event that we must go no huddle, the defense will line up in Base
alignment. Mike and both Backers will look to the sideline for the signal and
then relay the call to the players near them.

PLAY CALLING SYSTEM

A defensive play call can potentially have 4 parts:
Front Line Call Blitz Call - Coverage
If a call is missing one of these parts then we run the default for that part of the
play call.
1.Front Call - This will be a 2 digit number. It tells the line and backers where
to align on the play. Default is 33.
2.Line Stunt - This will be a one word call (ex: pinch, slant, etc. ) It dictates the
movement of the front at the snap. Default is BASE.
3.Blitz Call - This will be a two word call consisting of the name and direction of
the blitz. (ex: crash weak). Default is BASE (no blitz).
4.Coverage - This will be a color call. (ex: green, white, etc.) It tell the pass
coverage for the play. Default is GREEN (cover 3)
SAMPLE CALL: 33 SLANT CRASH WEAK GREEN

Defensive Fronts

We will have the ability to line up in a variety of different fronts

in order to confuse the offense and disrupt their blocking scheme.
The front will be called by a two digit number. This will be the
first part of a defensive play call. Our fronts will include:

Defensive Line Stunts

A Defensive Line Stunt is a movement of the front at the snap of

the football.
The Line Stunt will be the second part of a defensive play call.
It will be a one word call. Our Line Stunt calls will include:
Base
Slant
Whip
Ram
Lion
Motion
Pinch
Out

On the following pages the Line Stunts will be drawn up from

a 33 front, however, we have the ability to run them from any
of our various Defensive Fronts.
Our Line Stunts can be run on their own or in conjunction with
our Blitz Packages to disrupt the offensive blocking scheme.

2011 Bolivar Tigers Defense

18

Defensive Line Stunts

Base

Slant

A Base call tells all linemen fire off the ball

and blow up the man in front of them,
reading his block. Then play down the LOS to
find to football.

A Slant call tells all linemen to attack the V

of the neck on the man to the STRONG side.
They are not to penetrate upfield, but after
slanting should play down the LOS to the
football

Whip

Motion

A Whip call tells all linemen to slant to the

WEAK side.

A Motion call tells all linemen to slant in the

direction of motion by the offense. The call
for the direction of the motion will be made
by the linebackers.

2011 Bolivar Tigers Defense

19

Defensive Line Stunts

Ram

Lion

A Ram call tells all linemen to slant RIGHT.

This is a predetermined direction and is not
dictated by the offensive formation.

A Lion call tells all linemen to slant LEFT.

This is a predetermined direction and is not
dictated by the offensive formation.

Pinch

Out

A Pinch call tells the Tackles to Slant INSIDE

(toward the ball). The Nose Guard will play
Base technique.

An Out call tells the Tackles to Slant

OUTSIDE (away from the ball). The Nose
Guard will play Base technique.

Blitz Packages
Our Blitz Packages allow us to put pressure on the offense by
stunting our linemen while bringing one or more linebackers.
The Blitz Call will be the third part of a defensive play call.
It will be a two word call. The first word will give the name of
The Blitz and the second will give the side to which the blitz is
called. The Blitzes can be called strong, weak, left, right, or double.
Our Blitz calls will include:
Mike
Bam
Bob
Buck
Dog
Crash
Smash
Storm
Hurricane
On the following pages the Blitzes will be drawn up from
a 33 front, however, we have the ability to run them from any
of our various Defensive Fronts.
Our Blitz calls can be run on their own or in conjunction with
our Line Stunts to disrupt the offensive blocking scheme.

2011 Bolivar Tigers Defense

21

Blitz Packages
There will be four different ways that we can run our blitz
packages:
Hide Stay in our base alignment until the snap.
Show - Walk up and line up in the gap where the blitz will be
coming.
Cheat - Start out in base alignments. Begin to move towards
your gap as the QB enters his cadence.
Prowl - Move around stepping in and out of gaps, but making
sure you are in position to run the stunt at the snap.
This will look like organized chaos

The way we run our blitz packages may vary from week to week
according to our game plan.
