Chapter 2: Avaya Aura Solution for

Midsize Enterprise overview
Avaya Aura Solution for Midsize Enterprise is a SIP-based software foundation for mid-sized businesses.
Midsize Enterprise simplifies complex communication networks and delivers voice, video, messaging,
Web applications, and more to employees anywhere, anytime, on any device.
Midsize Enterprise provides a full suite of applications delivering traditional telephony (TDM), IP Telephony
(SIP, H.323), utility services (DHCP, HTTP), and full collaboration services (Video, Presence, and
Conferencing) with fewer servers and reduced deployment costs.
Midsize Enterprise serves as a vehicle for Avaya Business, Avaya Partners, and Avaya customers to test,
trial, deploy, and demonstrate the power of Avaya Aura with a smaller footprint.
Avaya AuraSolution for Midsize Enterprise:
replaces large, separate server deployments.
integrates with existing communications systems.
provides a path for existing Midsize Business Template 5.2.1, Communication Manager 4.x, and
Communication Manager 3.x customers to migrate to Avaya Aura applications.
increases employee satisfaction in work from home environments.
increases flexibility for employees to manage their work and home priorities easier.
is intended to be the single core server for a customer's enterprise with an optional High Availability
server. Midsize Enterprise does not support core survivability options for any of the applications.
Midsize Enterprise can be networked with other cores.
Avaya Aura Solution for Midsize Enterprise can be installed as:
a simplex solution.
a High Availability (HA) solution. The HA solution uses the Avaya Aura System Platform Fast Reboot
function.

Midsize Enterprise Features

Simplification
Midsize Enterprise combines voice, messaging, video, application enablement, presence,
software media services, and full SIP capabilities. Midsize Enterprise hosts multiple Avaya
Aura applications on a single server and simplifies application installation, administration, and

ongoing management. Installing the Midsize Enterprise template on a single server is faster
than installing the suite of applications separately. System configuration is streamlined through
the use of pre-defined templates and pre-staged applications.

Lower costs
Midsize Enterprise:
reduces the time and cost associated with administration, maintenance, and application
deployment. The pre-configured solution can be installed quickly and easily in about one
hour.
decreases IT overhead with fewer devices to manage. System maintenance and
integrated services for administrators (upgrades, backup/restore) requires 75% less
time.
is less expensive to buy. 75% less hardware is required.
lowers carbon footprint. Virtualization uses 75% less power and cooling compared to
traditional deployments.
SIP trunking can reduce telecommunication expenses from 20% to 50% by centralizing trunks,
reducing trunk access charges, and lowering toll-charge and long-distance rates. SIP trunking
provides flexible and intelligent routing of inbound calls.
Single Server Modular Messaging simplifies rollouts and lowers hardware maintenance costs
by 50% (based on a typical customer configuration).

Productivity
Midsize Enterprise addresses the challenge of anytime, anywhere worker productivity by
providing consistent Unified Communications capabilities to all users regardless of location.
Midsize enterprises can provide customers with embedded call center support and ACD
routing. The optional Contact Center Express (CCE) offers multi-channel contact center.
Employees are accessible to customers and co-workers whether they are mobile,
telecommuting from home, or working at another office or branch location.
Employees can receive and retrieve their messages in a single, unified mailbox, be notified of
important messages and callers, and access corporate directories.
Midsize Enterprise provides application support for a variety of customer-provided devices,
including the Avaya Flare Communicator for iPad Devices.
Presence-enabled communication increases workforce efficiency through the visibility of the
availability of each person in the enterprise. Midsize Enterprise integrates with solutions from
companies such as Microsoft, IBM, and Google.

Business continuity
Each virtual server acts completely independently from one another and supports a Survivable
Remote server (formerly Local Survivable Processor).
Secure Access Link (SAL) provides secure alarming and remote access to Avaya Expert
Systems over IP and HTTPS with full audit trails for customer review.
The High Availability option offers full server redundancy.

Midsize Enterprise Features

Streamlined installation
Installation time is 90 minutes. The Midsize Enterprise template is pre-staged on the server by
a distribution partner with pre-defined values for administration and network identity.

Network parameter changes

The time required for changing network parameters is 45 minutes. You can change general
network parameters without reinstalling or restarting the application. Network parameter
changes take up to 45 minutes to be applied to the entire system.

Configuration requirements
Managing and configuring Midsize Enterprise requires the following:
Eleven (11) static IP addresses. Ten (10) are needed for the required virtual applications
or virtual machines in the server, and one (1) is needed for the required H.248 Media
Gateway. The ten VA or VM IP addresses must all be on the same subnet. The H.248
Media Gateway IP addresses must be reachable from that subnet. You also require an
IP address for each of your endpoints. You can assign IP addresses either statically or
by using DHCP.
Note:
If the optional Services VM is included, twelve (12) IP addresses and hostnames are
required.
Seven (7) username/password pairs.
Four (4) license files must be downloaded and applied to Midsize Enterprise.
Communication Manager, Application Enablement Services, Session Manager, and
Presence Services continue to be licensed individually. You can download the four
licenses from PLDS as a single download transaction.

Survivable Core and Survivable Remote Interactions

Midsize Enterprise does not support Survivable Core functionality in this release. Individual
application reliability offers do not apply. Instead, the Midsize Enterprise solution is offered as
a simplex solution or with System Platform Fast Reboot High Availability.
Midsize Enterprise supports Survivable Remote functionality in this release, up to a maximum
of 250 branches/survivable remotes.

High Availability
Midsize Enterprise supports High Availability installations with redundant server configurations
and remote sites that require a survivable branch or survivable remote solution. In the High
Availability configuration, the primary and backup servers use a virtual server address for
communication with external devices.
Midsize Enterprise uses the Fast Reboot High Availability functionality of System Platform. If
the primary server fails, applications continue operating on a second server. This configuration
requires a physical connection (crossover LAN cable) between the active and standby servers.
The cable serves as a high speed, low latency connection for disk mirroring. The cable also

Avaya Aura Solution for Midsize Enterprise Description

June 2014

15

Avaya Aura Solution for Midsize Enterprise overview

serves as a redundant communication path between the active and standby servers. The
standby server distinguishes communication failures (which do not cause a failover) from
problems with the active server (which do cause a failover).
Because the cable must physically connect the servers, the active and standby servers must
be located within 100 meters of each other. The failover time is less than 10 minutes, not
including re-registration. You can enable or add High Availability to an existing single server
without reinstalling the Midsize Enterprise template on the original server.
See Installing and Configuring Avaya Aura System Platform on the Avaya support website
for more information about High Availability.

High Availability setup for Midsize Enterprise

Midsize Enterprise High Availability uses the System Platform Fast Reboot functionality. The
Distributed Replicated Block Device (DRDB) software replicates data between the two
servers.
Data is transferred across a 1 GB crossover cable that is connected to the Eth2 port on each
server (active and standby). The Ethernet specification limit for the length of this cable is 100
meters. This interconnection cannot include a layer-2 switch.
Note:
Failover time takes approximately 10 minutes.
The following diagram shows how High Availability is set up for Midsize Enterprise.

June 2014

Midsize Enterprise Features

Consolidated backup and restore

You can perform a consolidated backup and restore of all Midsize Enterprise application data
using System Manager or the System Platform Management console as supported by the
individual applications.
You can store the backup locally or on a remote server.
You can restore application data directly or while connected to the server on the network.
Note:
Communication Manager Messaging does not provide consolidated backup and restore with
System Platform. The Communication Manager Messaging Message store (the voice mail
messages in mailboxes) can be quite large and is not practical for the HDD on the server.
The Communication Manager Messaging Message store is more suitable for saving backup
files off the server. Save Communication Manager Messaging separately to an off-server
location using the Communication Manager Messaging SMI page.
Important:
If you are restoring data to a different server but using the same network identity (as in the
case of disaster recovery), re-licensing from PLDS is required because the MAC address is
different.

Services Virtual Machine

The Secure Access Link Gateway (SAL gateway) runs on an independent Services Virtual
Machine (SVM) on the Midsize Enterprise server.
The Services Virtual Machine:
sends alarms to the Avaya Data Center for Avaya maintenance customers.
enables secure remote access for Avaya Client Services to local server resources to
perform maintenance activities.
forwards alarms (SNMPv2 traps) from the local solution server to a remote Network
Management System (NMS).
The SVM is a separate template. The SVM is not a solution template. You can enable or
upgrade the SVM template at anytime, independent of the Midsize Enterprise template.
See Implementing and Administering Services-VM on Avaya Aura System Platform for more
information regarding Services Virtual Machine.

or virtual machines in the server, and one (1) is needed for the required H.248 Media
Gateway. The ten VA or VM IP addresses must all be on the same subnet. The H.248
Media Gateway IP addresses must be reachable from that subnet. You also require an
IP address for each of your endpoints. You can assign IP addresses either statically or

Avaya Aura Solution for Midsize Enterprise overview

Components
The Midsize Enterprise template includes the following Avaya Aura applications:
Communication
Manager

Communication Manager is the centerpiece of Avaya applications that

organizes and routes voice, data, image, and video transmissions. You
can connect your system to communications paths that transmit voice
and data signals between your business telephone system and the
public telephone central office as well as to other public and private
networks. Communication Manager includes built-in capabilities such
as conferencing and call center applications. Communication Manager
supports a wide range of servers and gateways, and analog, digital, and
IP-based communication devices.

Communication
Manager
Messaging

Communication Manager Messaging provides call answering and

messaging capabilities. Users can manage messages on a computer,
add voice mail to a text message, and listen to text messages over the
telephone.

Application
Enablement
Services

Application Enablement Services consists of enhanced telephony APIs,

protocols, and Web services that are available to developers.
Developers can access powerful call processing, media, and
administrative features available in Communication Manager. These
features integrate with communication and business applications such
as Microsoft Office Communicator and IBM Lotus Sametime and a
broad range of call center, call recording, and click-to-dial
applications.

Presence Services Presence Services collects and disseminates presence information

between Avaya and other third-party endpoints. Presence information
indicates the availability of a user, such Available, Busy, Away, Do not
disturb, or On a call.

20

Services Virtual
Machine

The Secure Access Link Gateway (SAL Gateway) runs on the Services
Virtual Machine (services_vm) domain. The Services VM is a separate
template. The Services VM must be disabled if the SAL Gateway is
running in a separate, dedicated server elsewhere in the network. The
Services VM can be enabled at any time.

Session Manager

Session Manager provides centralized SIP routing and management of

multi-vendor communications systems, including centralized dial plans
and user profiles, centralized SIP trunking, call routing, and enhanced
scalability and security.

Caveats and limitations

System Manager

System Manager consists of a browser-based console that provides a

common management platform for administering and managing
multiple instances of Avaya Aura applications.

Utility Services

Utility Services provides the tools to analyze, configure, optimize, and

maintain the Avaya Aura applications that reside on a single server.
For example, by using Utility Services, you can download and manage
IP telephone firmware, branch gateway firmware, and telephone
settings files.

Midsize Enterprise uses System Platform technology to virtualize the applications on a single
server. All applications are installed using the System Platform web console.
See the release notes for eaco of the applications for additional fixes, known issues, and
workarounds. The release notes are available on the Avaya support website at http://
support.avaya.com.

Caveats and limitations

The conferencing engine for Avaya Aura Conferencing is provided on a separate server.
IPv6 is not currently supported by the Midsize Enterprise template.
Midsize Enterprise is intended to be the single core server for the customers enterprise.
Midsize Enterprise can support up to 5 other Communication Managers or Avaya
Communication Server 1000 s in the Avaya enterprise. Although Midsize Enterprise can be
networked with other core servers, Midsize Enterprise does not support core survivability
options for any of the applications. The following individual redundancy solutions are not
supported:
any Application Enablement Servicesspecific redundancy mode.
Communication Manager geo-redundancy by way of a Communication Manager
survivable core. Note that survivable remotes as part of a G-series gateway are
supported.
Session Manager active-active redundancy, for example, when the Midsize Enterprise
Session Manager is the only one in its Session Manager enterprise network.
System Manager geo-redundancy.
Using an Ethernet switch for the HA link is not supported.
The Midsize Enterprise Communication Manager application can only be configured as a main
server. The Communication Manager server cannot be configured as a Survivable Remote or
core server.

The valid upgrade and migration paths to Midsize Enterprise 6.2.2 are:
Midsize Enterprise 6.1 to Midsize Enterprise 6.2.2
Midsize Enterprise 6.2 to Midsize Enterprise 6.2.2
Midsize Business Template 5.2.1 to Midsize Enterprise 6.2.2
Note:
No license credit will be given for existing licenses for upgrading from Midsize Business
Template 5.2.1.
Upgrading from Avaya Aura Collaboration Server 6.1 directly to Midsize Enterprise
6.2.2 is not supported.
S8800 servers running Collaboration Server 6.1 cannot be upgraded to Midsize
Enterprise 6.2.2.
Midsize Enterprise 6.2.2 is only supported on the HP ProLiant DL360 G7 and HP

Solution specifications

Media Services has been replaced by a hardware gateway. Midsize Business Template users
who are running Media Services must implement a gateway product for media services. Media
Services was a software implementation option that was included in the Midsize Business
Template offer. To replace this functionality, deploy Avaya Aura G430, G450, and G650
gateways.

Upgrading from Midsize Enterprise 6.1 or 6.2

Customers running Midsize Enterprise 6.1 on a server other than a supported server for
Midsize Enterprise 6.2.2 must upgrade their server before upgrading to Midsize Enterprise
6.2.2.
Customers running Midsize Enterprise 6.1 or Midsize Enterprise 6.2 on the servers that are
supported for Midsize Enterprise 6.2.2 do not need to upgrade their server before upgrading
to Midsize Enterprise 6.2.2.
