CE 371A: DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES

SEMESTER I: 2014

Homework #8 CONNECTIONS
Optional: Submit before Nov. 14 for a bonus credit of 2%!
Use E250 steel (fy=250 MPa and fu=410 MPa)
All loads are unfactored unless stated otherwise.

PART A: Simple Connections

Prob.#1

Calculate the theoretical spacing of M12 high strength [class 8.8] bolts in bearing for the built-up beam
(IXX = 39289 cm4) which is to carry a concentrated factored load of 250 kN in the middle of a span at
mid-span as shown in figure.

Prob.#2

The arrangement for a friction grip bolt connection

provided for a tie carrying a force of 300 kN as shown in
figure. Check the adequacy if all the bolts provided are M20
[class 8.8] bolts.

Prob.#3

A tension member, two ISA 100 x 75 x10, carries a load P

of 250 kN with a direction of 300from the horizontal axis. A
single 16 mm plate bracket is used to connect the tension
member and welded directly to the center of the column
flange using a double bevel full penetration groove weld.
Fillet welds attaching the angles to the plate should be
arranged so as to balance the forces about the neutral axis
of the connection of the double angles to eliminate any
eccentricities. Design both the connections.

Prob.#4

The general arrangement of a hangar connection is shown

in which ISHT 100 is connected to bottom flange of a beam
ISWB 300. For given 6 M20 HSFG [class 8.8] bolts in
standard holes, determine the maximum factored load that
can be applied considering the prying action. .

PART B: Eccentric Connections

Prob.#5

An ISHB 400 @ 82.2 kg/m column supports a concentric axial load of 300 kN and a moment of 125 kN
m in the plane of the web. Design a base plate and its connection to the column shaft. Also design the
anchor bolts, if required.

Prob.#6
300 kN

What size HSFG bolts (class 8.8, threads in shear

plane) are required for the bracket connection
shown in figure. Slip is permitted. All steel is 250
MPa.

Prob.#7

Determine the maximum load in the weld (in N

per mm of length for a unit throat dimension).

Prob.#8

Determine the minimum size of the weld

required for connection of shelf angle to
column flange for the weld configuration as
shown in figure, if the factored load P is 150 kN.

Prob.#9

Design the beam frame connection of the type

shown in figure for a ISHB 200 @ 37.3 kg/m
column and ISMB 250 @ 37.3 kg/m beam. The
maximum moment and shear caused by gravity
loads are 100 kNm and 50 kN, respectively. Use
250 MPa steel, and HSFG bearing type bolts.
