CONGRESS ON BROWARD’S CLIMATE
CHANGE EFFORTS
Broward County Commissioner
Kristin D. Jacobs is in Washington, D.C,
today for a Congressional briefing on
local climate action in the South-
eastern United States.
Commissioner Jacobs gave remarks
and a presentation on adapting to the
impacts of climate change, and the
newly-signed South Florida Regional
Climate Change Compact among
Broward County Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and
Commissioner Monroe counties. Commissioners
Kristin Jacob representing the four counties signed
the pact at a precedent setting Climate
Change Leadership Summit that took place in Broward County
last month.The four counties agreed to develop a regional plan
to mitigate the impact of climate change in South Florida.
Also attending are U.S. Senators Mark Warner of Virginia,
Barbara Boxer of California and John Kerry of Massachusetts;
local elected officials from South Carolina, Virginia and
Washington state; and Congressional staff and representatives
of Washington, D.C., environmental organizations.
“I’m extremely proud to have the opportunity to present
some of Broward County's groundbreaking climate change
initiatives in our nation’s capital today,” said Commissioner
Jacobs. “I believe what we’ve spearheaded here at home will
take hold all across the country.” Commissioner Jacobs will also
meet with U.S. Senator Bill Nelson and staff of U.S. Senator
George LeMieux regarding Senate Bill 1733, the Clean Energy
Jobs & American Power Act.

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD
AUXILIARY – FLOTILLA 3-7
The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 3-7 in Lighthouse
Point, as a public service, will conduct a one-day About
Boating Safety (ABS) Course on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at
the Dixon Ahl Recreation Center, 2200 N.E. 38th Street

of navigational aids, elementary boat handling, required safety
equipment, and the rules for using the local waterways.

LIGHTHOUSE POINTS FIRST
ENVIRONMENTAL FAIR AND PLANT SALE
Join us for a day of fun and learning on Saturday, January 23rd
from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Frank McDonough Park. There
will be vendors with environmentally friendly products, unique
and interesting plants as well as native plants and organic
vegetables. There will also be booths on solar energy, irrigation,
water management, rain barrels and recycling. A kids’ center with
“hands on” activities and a “Trash to Treasure” art contest. Red
Fox will have a food area with wraps and beverages. The fair is
being hosted by the Lighthouse Point Environmental Committee.

a Trash to Treasure Art Contest at the Lighthouse Point
Environmental Fair and Plant Sale. Put your creativity in gear.

bottle caps, paper rolls, plant clippings, anything you want —
and create your own unique “art.”
Judging will be done on Saturday, January 23rd and prizes

Football Fever Fuels Frenzied Fans

hosted an evening for members of the Exchange Club for
the sole pleasure of having them witness the slaughter of
the New England Patriots by the New Orleans Saints. And
what a convincing defeat it was!
Wyatt, who often travels between Lighthouse Point and
New Orleans, showed much empathy and was gracious to
the many disgruntled Patriot fans who found little to be
happy about that evening. Club members left with their
tails between their legs. I’m sure they’ll recover just in time
for the next beating by the Dolphins.

The Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce held their Holiday Kick-Off/Business With a
Twist at Rotelli’s Pizza & Pasta, located at the Pompano Citi Centre.
Chamber President Rick Greene introduced all responsible for arranging the event and
thanked Pompano Citi Centre representative Julie Katz for her hard work.
Members exchanged gifts, co-mingled, and enjoyed great food provided by the restaurant
and friendly staff.

Exchange Club Honors Local Students

Each month, the Exchange Club of Pompano
Beach, invites the teachers and counselors from the
local high schools to recommend students for a
prestigious award. Once selected, the students are
invited to attend the Exchange Club’s weekly lunch
meeting where they are presented with a plaque
honoring their achievement.
Club Youth Programs Assistant Chair, F.r Tim
Thomas presented the plaques and asked the
students to tell attending club members about their
goals, career plans and the person who has had the
most positive influence on their lives. This month’s
students are being honored for academic
achievement in their respective schools. This award
is presented to those students that have worked very
hard to be the best.

New Opportunities
For Roth Ira Conversion
Have you thought of converting a traditional IRA to a
Roth IRA? If so, this may be your year.
Roth IRA earnings can grow tax free if you’ve had your
account at least five years and you postpone withdrawals
until you’re at least 59-1/2. Furthermore, a Roth IRA, unlike
a traditional IRA, doesn’t require you to take distributions
when you reach 70-1/2.
Previously, you faced strict income and filing-status
limits before converting a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA.
But in 2010, you can convert funds to a Roth IRA even if
your modified adjusted gross income is over $100,000 and
you are married and file separate tax returns.
Plus, if you convert in 2010, you can spread the taxes
due on conversion over two years.
Consult with your tax advisor before converting to a
Roth IRA. If appropriate for your situation, this conversion
can be a smart move.

The November LHP Chamber of Commerce Social was
held at Liberty Tax Services located on 1600 E. Sample
Road. Roger Gingerich and Susan Gingerich greeted the
more than 45 guests and serviced scrumptious
appetizers and treats from Susan’s Basket Garden Gifts.

Michele Greene, LHP Chamber’s President, greeted the
group and invited everyone to introduce themselves and
give a brief summary of their business. This was a great
way to get to know the fellow members and everyone
enjoyed the rest of the evening networking with each
other. New members were presented with their Chamber
member plaque.
The December LHP Chamber Social was “Breakfast at
the Library,” held on Tuesday, December 15th at 8:00 a.m.
at the Doreen Gauthier Lighthouse Point Library. The
setting was wonderfully themed for the holidays. Thanks
to each attendee who brought gift cards or unwrapped
gifts for children to be distributed in our community by
the LHP Police and LHP Fire Departments.
Also, a huge thank you to Doreen Gauthier and the library
staff who assisted with the holiday breakfast meeting.
The 6th Annual Taste of Lighthouse Point — the
Chamber’s signature event, will be held on Tuesday,
January 19th from 6:30 p.m. till 9:30 p.m. at the lovely
Lighthouse Point Yacht and Racquet club.

The event is being held in the entire club, the
restaurants will be along the perimeter dining and flag
rooms. As the attendees enter the club, just after
registration, there will be the first of three wine stations.
At registration, each person will receive a glass wine glass
and the holding plate. There are over 28 restaurants being
represented — each with their own signature fare. The Live
and Silent auctions will be in the dining room. The Club is
again offering a cash bar. Opportunities for the Chinese
auction sales will occur the first part of the evening.
Tickets are still available for $40 each in advance and
$50 at the door. MasterCard and Visa are accepted
for ticket purchases by calling Michele Greene at

Several LHP businesses will be displaying posters which
list this year’s line-up on the participating restaurants and

associated with doing such an event. The proceeds of the
ticket sales and the auctions, Live, Silent and Chinese are
then the profit that goes to promote the Chamber and will
be distributed to numerous causes pertinent to the City
and the city residents and businesses.

Members of the organization were first greeted with a smile
at the door by the designated “mimosa man,” Daniel Granish, who
efficiently supplied each person with a refreshing cocktail as
they stepped in the doorway. What a delightful way to start
the evening!
Music of the 1940s wafted throughout home and patio area as
chef extraordinaire Luigi Enriquez of La Vitrolla Catering in
Delray Beach proved that he has a master touch. And especially

Property Owners Often See 20-50% Rate Reductions

Self-reporting the presence of a property’s inherent strengths
is like a vehicle owner telling the insurance company his or her
car has an airbag or anti-lock brakes, and so an inspection is
required. Frequently, home and building owners are eligible for
insurance premium discounts they didn’t realize existed on their
homes. In fact, some 90 percent of property owners are eligible
for insurance discounts of 20-50 percent following a wind
insurance mitigation inspection, reducing their annual premiums
by hundreds or even thousands of dollars. In some cases, these
savings are retroactive to the beginning of the current policy
period. All future premiums then reflect the credits and
discounts.

Resolutions 2010

It’s a brand new year, a time of hope and growth and
shaking free of the limitations of the past. It’s a time of
renewal and redemption and salvation. But most of all, it’s
a time to make a series of New Year’s resolutions that I’ll
spend the next 365 days treating like a to-do list created by
someone who doesn’t know me very well and has NO
RIGHT to tell me how to live my life.
Here, in no particular order and subject to change
without notice, are my resolutions for 2010.
Resolution #1: I will use the power of social media to
unite, enlighten and inspire people in search of greater
meaning and purpose in life. I will also provide timely
updates on when I’m getting my car washed, buying
yogurt, growing a goatee, or thinking of throwing out old
running shoes.
Resolution #2: I will expand my horizons by traveling
more and spending time abroad. (Let the record show that
I’ve never been abroad, but I have used my wife’s body
lotion when we’ve run out of soap.)
Resolution #3: I will stop judging people harshly and give
them the benefit of the doubt. Like the dirt bag that
tailgated me at high speed the other day on I-95 risking
innocent lives so that he could arrive five minutes early at
Bucky’s Belly Up Bar and complain to his loser buddies
about how miserable his life is in spite of his towering
intellect and George Clooney-ish charm. (There. I’ve gotten
it out of my system.)
Resolution #4: I will think big thoughts, but relish small
pleasures. Big Thought: I must build a body of work that
will reach across time and space and enrich people’s
lives long after I’m gone. Small pleasure: Mmmm, sweet
potato fries.
Resolution #5: Knowing that, on average, women utter
7,000 words a day and men manage just over 2,000, I will
do my part to close the gap by expanding everything I say
to include the additional phrase “It is what it is.”

Resolution #6: I will break out of my comfort zone and go
on a cattle drive where I’ll learn to ride a horse over long
distances, develop close, mutually-supportive relationships
with fellow cowhands, cook semi-edible slop over an open
campfire, sleep on the hard ground in snake and coyote-
ridden terrain, and use the experience as a springboard to
live my life with a greater self-confidence and
resourcefulness than ever before. (NOTE: If continued
economic hardships preclude an adventure of this
magnitude, I will scale back and break out of my comfort
zone by running towards a gaggle of geese at a park and
shouting “fight or flight,”“fight or flight,” and then, as they
fly away in terror, yell after them, “yeah, that’s what I
thought ladies.”
Resolution #7: I will pick a hairstyle that works for me
and stick with it over the long term. This will end my life-
long experimentation with hair styles that resulted in my
hitting bottom last year when I was mistaken for Art
Garfunkel at a family reunion. (It changed me.)
Resolution #8: I will approach both love and cooking
with the same reckless abandon but will cut costs on both
fronts by buying off-brand syrups and dipping oils.
Resolution #9: I will strive to live my life according to the
three Rs: Respect for self; Respect for others; Random acts
of kindness carried out Regularly. (Okay, that may actually
be a total of four Rs, so I’ll shoot for all of them and
consider three out of four a successful campaign.)
Happy New Year everyone! Give it your best. Count
your blessings. Don’t sweat the small stuff. And remember
that the main thing is to always keep the main thing the
main thing. Which reminds me of one final pledge:
Resolution #10: When my attempts to sound philo-
sophically advanced result in pretentious babble about
“keeping the main thing the main thing,” I will wisely shut
up. (Hey, it is what it is.)

Getting Rid Of The Weeds

Round-up, Killz-all, Finale. It sounds like a war going on in
the garden. However, these words are actually being used to
market weed killers! Products like these have been used for years,
with questionable safety. They kill weeds by entering their
systems and/or killing them topically. In either case, these
chemicals enter the soil, and eventually our water supply,
either via the groundwater, or tributaries, lakes, ponds, and the
ocean via run-off. Unfortunately, our climate is so mild, and the
rains so plentiful, that most of the time, weeds can run rampant,
if not controlled.
If you’ve been reading my column for a while, then you know I
am a strong advocate of using ground cover plants to cover bare
areas. That’s because the key is to block the sunlight which weed
seeds need to sprout, and to force them to compete for water and
nutrients using bigger and stronger plants already established,
leading to their demise. This is the best and easiest way to control
weeds. Mulch is useful, but breaks down rather quickly, forming a
cozy and perfect seed bed for weeds. I once read that mulch is the
“underwear” of the garden, and shouldn’t really be seen. I whole-
heartedly agree with that. Nature abhors a vacuum, and an empty
space will likely be filled with something, unless you do it first.
Simply plant the things you want to see growing there, and let
them do the policing for you. There are literally dozens, if not

to use shrubs around than poor dead cypress trees?

them from the deadly string trimmers. So, the living mulch for a
Gumbo Limbo tree could essentially be a Firebush. The mulch
for a Firebush could be a Coontie, etc.
However, if you still need a product to kill the little rascals,
there is a product out called Avenger which is made from
orange oil. Avenger kills quite thoroughly, is pleasant smelling and
causes no harm to you or the environment. You can also try
straight white vinegar, which is 5% acetic acid, and will work on
smaller seedlings.
Now, if after all this careful planning, you still find that you
have more weeds than you are comfortable with, then try to hand
pull them, especially before they start to flower and set seed for
the future generation of weeds. This will make a big impact
eventually, and is quite therapeutic; like voting—you get to decide
who to keep.

TJ tells me that he

he calls it) his horses. He sees himself as the “trainer” of the therapy
horses and he believes he is helping the horses become better to
ride for other children. As a result his self-esteem has improved
greatly. He feels what he does when he rides has great purpose and
he swells with pride as a result.
I also noticed a big change in TJ’s endurance. He is better able
to ride his bike, play sports, and has shown improvements with his
grades in school since he started. I would recommend to any
parents or adults themselves that may be thinking about this
program to give it a try. It has been a fun and rewarding experience
for our whole family. As a matter of fact, my daughter and other son
will begin taking lessons as well at Sand and Spurs Park this month.

Tracy was studying
abroad in Florence, Italy,
as an exchange student
from the University of
Miami, when her life
was radically changed.
She was just beginning
the second semester of
her junior year abroad,
living her dream of
learning first hand the
history of her Italian
ancestors and traveling
through Europe. Her
parents were living near
Naples, where her Dad
was the Commanding
Officer of the US Naval
Hospital.
Tiffany,Tracy’s older
Tracy Anzelone sister, quit her job to
join Tracy for her last
semester of traveling. Both girls were with friends waiting for
another to join them for dinner, when an out-of-control car
jumped the sidewalk and hit them.
Tracy was knocked down, sustaining a broken ankle and some
lacerations, although she never lost consciousness. She soon
underwent surgery to repair her broken ankle and suffered an
anoxic brain injury from too much narcotics and not enough
oxygen post-operatively, resulting in cardiac arrest. Tracy remained
in a coma for two and a half months, and to this day (nearly seven
years later) is unable to speak, eat, or move on her own.
Hippotherapy, at Bit-By-Bit, has given Tracy back some control
of her life. She has been riding now for nearly three years, and
there have tremendous gains in her trunk and head control.When
she started hippotherapy, Tracy needed several pillows to help
with trunk stability. Now, when Tracy rides Gypsy, she sits up tall
and proud, needing only a light touch from her “sidewalkers.”
Horses are such gentle, healing, magical animals, providing the
feeling of walking for those who are unable to stand or ambulate.
For Tracy, Hippotherapy brings a little normalcy to a life that has
been anything but normal.When she is riding Gypsy, she appears
to be on top of the world!
The emotional support and unconditional love shared
between Tracy and Gypsy are beyond words! It is a blessing to
have Bit-By-Bit Therapy, Inc., right in our own backyard, at Sand
and Spurs in Pompano!

sooner, but can you believe
not all insurances pay for
this wonderful therapy?
Ryan loves going to
horses. He runs up to meet
Ryan Metzelar his horse walkers and
trainer every week. It is
very safe and there is usually a trainer and two horse walkers
(volunteers) at all times. It's really interesting to watch;
sometimes they make him turn around while riding, sometimes
he rides bareback or with his hands in the air. This way the kids
get there therapy while having fun.
Since riding, his balance has somewhat improved, his
confidence and fear of heights has really improved and he is not
as fearful of animals. At Bit By Bit they know what they are doing
and make the kids therapy fun! He was absolutely thrilled to get
a Trophy and Ribbon and to ride a horse dressed as Elvis at the
Halloween Horse Show! How fun!
I really believe in Bit-by-Bit, it is a fantastic children’s therapy
program. They are helping so many of our children every day!
I feel so lucky to have my children involved in this program and
am so grateful to all the “human” and “horse” therapists who have
helped my children.

which will give him the

his disorder. My son, Philip
Thomas Valenti, was diag-
nosed with Autism Spectrum
Disorder when he was two-
and-a-half-years-old after an
evaluation by Broward
County’s Early Steps Program.
Immediately, Early Steps
assisted me in placing Philip
in necessary therapies. Philip
is non-verbal and running
about a one-and-a-half years
behind his peers. The Early
Steps Program was instru-
mental in getting Philip into
Philip Thomas Valenti the developmental preschool
at the Anne Storck Center
which gave Philip a foundation to build upon. On a weekly basis
Philip attends speech, occupational and physical therapy
sessions which are not enough by themselves. At home we
integrate as much of his daily therapies as possible and continue
to build upon the foundation that the therapists have built.
I heard of a book written by a father with an autistic son
who wrote about his experience with horses and how his son

Bit-By-Bit three
months ago, he
has come out
of his shell. He
climbs right on
his horse and
loves riding. Not
only has he
gotten stronger
and more agile
since he began
riding, he has also

confident.
One of the biggest surprises is that he has always been
extremely soft spoken. His speech therapist has been trying to
raise his speech volume, but it was a slow process. But since he
has been ridding and is required to give his horse verbal
commands, his speech volume has increased greatly. When he
tells his horse, Snickers to “walk on!” or “Hoooo,” he almost
shouts the commands. John has a younger brother George goes
and watches him ride always with his two older sisters, Amber
and Bryanna.
John Frosland Sr
broke out of his autistic world to be exposed to his
surroundings. His son actually gained speech, social skills and
became toilet trained. Growing up in the country and being
exposed to horses, I know that horses are very special. I
wanted Philip to experience the freedom of riding and prayed
his world would open around him. Philip started Bit-By-Bit at
the end of September and within the first week of riding
“Sheba” Philip said two new words. I noticed after riding he
is calmer and focused. Philip does not like hats nothing can
be on his head or around his ears. After three weeks of horse
therapy, Philip no longer fusses about putting on his helmet
or having it fastened. Philip turned three years old in October,
about one month after starting horse therapy. We have noticed
many changes in Philip’s behavior, cognitive abilities, and his
posture. Philip has become courteous about his environment,
focuses more, makes more eye contact, increased his
vocabulary (he now says horse.), plays with his toys properly,
initiates games such as peek-a-boo or chase, and he has gained
upper and lower body strength. Bit-By-Bit has become an
intricate part of his development. Philip looks forward to
every Sunday morning when we turn down the road that leads
to the stables. Excitement fills the car and he anxiously looks
out the window while kicking his feet until he sees the horses.
I watch him as he gets on the horse, grabs the reins and
rides with a smile. My heart fills with joy because his world
is expanding.

Family Performs
Heroic Feat
As told by Julie Fitzpatrick
On Tuesday, November 10th, the Broward Sherriff’s Office
presented my family with a Life Saving Award and the City of
Pompano Beach presented us with a proclamation related to
the following story. It was very humbling to have received
these awards.
On Sunday August 23rd, my husband Larry, my 8-year-old son,
Glenn, and I were out in our 15' Whaler off the beach near the
balls north of Commercial Pier. We had stopped and were
getting ready to get into the water when we heard screaming.
We saw people in the water waving their arms and a boat
running right along the balls where there are divers.
Larry looked over and said “oh my god; there’s no one driving
that boat.” My husband was very quick-thinking and immediately
floored our boat in pursuit of the 23' Shearwater. We were
having a hard time trying to catch up. Our first thought was to
get in front of the boat and warn people to get out of the way.
We were screaming and yelling as we came up from behind, but
before we could get close enough the 23' Shearwater ran right
in between four divers in the water who were on the surface
missing them by less than three feet. My heart was in my
stomach because I thought for sure that the boat was going to hit
and kill or injure one of them.
We were still in high pursuit of the runaway boat but we
realized that there wasn’t enough time to get in front of the boat
and warn people and it was aiming straight for three boats all
anchored on the balls with divers in the water. With less than 30
seconds from the runaway Shearwater colliding with the
anchored boats and divers we knew we had to do something.
The only choice was to try and jump in the boat and stop it. We
knew we had to risk our lives to save others.
My husband drove up next to the Shearwater still maintaining
about 35 mph and we were bouncing all over the place from
the waves. The only communication between us was he said
“you’re going to have to jump” and I said “I know.” Fortunately,
Larry is an exceptional boat driver and I trust him implicitly.
As soon as I saw the boats get about one inch apart, I jumped
with all my might out of our Whaler into the Shearwater, just
trying to make sure I cleared the side of the Shearwater and
didn’t fall in between the two boats. I immediately stood up and
grabbed the throttle pulling it out of gear into neutral. I stood
there shaking for about 15 seconds. First I looked to make sure
nothing was wrong with the controls because we didn’t
understand how this happened.

Everything was working correctly on the boat so I began
driving the boat back to where we had first seen the people
screaming in the water. We were now just south of the
Pompano pier so I drove it back about three-quarters of a mile
to where we started.
A nearby dive boat, the Coral Princess, had picked up the four
people and called the authorities on Channel 16 to report the
runaway vessel. When all the authorities arrived we turned the
vessel over to them. I don’t want to speak for the four teenage
boys on board the Shearwater that day, but what I was told from
the authorities is that they were playing a game and everyone
jumped off the boat while it was running leaving no driver. It
reminds me of the old mother’s saying,“If all your friends jump
off a bridge are you going to do it too?”
For our part, I feel fortunate that we were in the right place
at the right time. I don’t know of any other boat out there other
than us that was in a position to try and help. The boats that saw
the Shearwater coming towards them had no idea that there was
no one driving it and that their lives were in danger. Secondly,
we were ready, willing, and able. It took my husband’s quick
response, and my willingness to jump in order to accomplish
this feat. Not every boater out there would know what to do,
respond so quickly, or be willing to do it. Nor should they
attempt it. We feel very proud to have saved lives that day.
As for the four teenage boys, if someone had been killed or
injured they could have gone to jail on manslaughter charges,
and they and their parents could have been sued for millions of
dollars. That would be a terrible price to pay for an accident.

Cristina Manole Sujoy

C ristina Manole Sujoy, her blonde hair pulled back, dressed in
beige slacks and blouse with minimum make up, showed me
around her sun-drenched Lighthouse Point home that housed a
wide array of her paintings.
Russian antique icons adorned one side of the wall and
several paintings and unfinished works were randomly arranged
on the dining table, giving the place the feel of an artist’s studio,
but within the confines of a delightful, well-appointed home.
Street Orchestra
As we walked into her well-lit living room that faced a canal,
the first thing I observed was an impressive French antique
tapestry hanging on the wall to the right. On the far wall was a
large oil painting of a group of musicians, painted in a pop-art
style that I later learned was a street scene in Buenos Aires.
With a European accent that had a musical quality to it,
Cristina spoke freely about her family, her life in South America,
and her thoughts about art and her inspirations.“You like what
comes easier to you,” Cristina said, her brown eyes deep in
thought. “I don’t really love landscapes…what I like is people.

Christmas Night
I like the gestures, I like to capture the personality, the eyes,
the hands.”
In her painting, “Awake on Christmas Night,” she depicted
her granddaughter, seated on a tan colored couch, holding two
dolls, looking tired and sleepy. The look of fatigue in the child’s
eyes was perfectly captured in this work. Her colors are warm,
the strokes, free and sweeping. The warm yellow hue can be
seen in the doll’s hat, socks and ribbon as well as the girl’s hair
that was brushed back.The dark color of the bottom left corner
gives a striking contrast to the tan couch and light upper
background.
In the painting “Benjamin,” an elderly man with glasses is
shown holding and looking down at a young child with a sweet,
cherub-like face. The child appears to gaze into the distance.
What is striking is the contrast of the man’s large, sturdy looking
hands against the delicate, small baby’s hands.
“My bread and butter are portraits. I like portraits with hands.
I think that the hands and face are the most expressive.” In her
portrait of her daughter,Victoria, who has a striking resemblance

to the French tennis player, Mary Pierce,

Cristina depicted her daughter staring off into
the distance with her half-open, thoughtful
eyes.There’s a casual simplicity in this work in
the way her wavy locks fall lazily to one side.
Cristina finds her inspiration in simple
things. “My grandson was at the beach and I
suddenly saw something that spoke to me.”
He was fascinated by a sea gull and began
crawling after it. Cristina captured this
moment in a photograph and from the
photograph created the delightful oil painting
called “Tag.” The perspective is taken from the
back of the child, crawling on a beach. The Grandfather with Baby
footprints, or rather knee prints of the child
are shown in the sand. The color of his blue
outfit is repeated in the blue of the ocean.The
mood is calm, yet playful and there’s an
understated charm that permeates this work.
Cristina’s still-life works appear realistic at
first glance but there is a modern quality to
them.“Still life is like hinges in my art.” She has
done a number of still lifes and always comes
back to them when she needs a subject.
In her early years of artistic development,
Cristina studied under a famous portrait artist
in Peru. She worked mainly in charcoal and
pastel and created numerous still- life works.
In her “Pitcher with Fruit,” Cristina painted
what she saw and not what it’s “supposed to
look like.” The reflection of the fruit placed in
the front of the pitcher is shown, as well as the
reflection of a window on the pitcher. We
don’t see the window in the painting but we
can imagine that there is a window in the Pitcher with Fruit
distance that is bringing in the light.

Cristina was raised in South America by her
Italian mother and Rumanian father. Her father
was a chemical engineer and she thought at
first she would follow in his footsteps, but
eventually realized that engineering was not
right for her. She found that her innate love
and talent for math and art were well-suited
for her to study architecture, so she worked
many years as an architect in Argentina before
coming to the States. However, in her
formative years she was exposed to the
classics and the works of the masters at the
German Suarez-Vertiz Academy of Art. Suarez,
the Director of the National Academy of Fine
Arts in Lima, Peru was a famous artist whose
portrait of Jose de San Martin is used on Peru’s
national currency.
In her later 20s, Cristina studied under
Anton Abreu Bastos, a Spanish expressionist
painter in Argentina. His works are found in
the Museum of Galicia, Spain. “He was
instrumental in the development of my sense
of composition and loosening of my strokes.”
She also worked in the Rodolfo Insaurralde
Studio whose hyper-realist works can be
found in private collections in Spain, France,
Mexico, U.S. and Argentina.“I thank him for his
lessons on color and composition—the use of
pigments and working with a limited palette.”
Cristina believes in practicing her art on a
daily basis. She either draws, sketches, takes
pictures or paints. “It takes discipline. If you
don’t paint regularly, it gets difficult to express
yourself.” She acknowledges the hard work
that goes into being an artist. “It doesn’t only
require inspiration. It takes practice and hard
work to create one’s art. The only period of
my life that I didn’t paint was when my
parents died. Grief is something that closes
your spirit. I felt that I was empty inside that
I had nothing to express. I need to be happy.
I’m not a tragic kind of artist.” She believes that
grief creates a blockage in one’s creativity.
Cristina spoke with deep insight and
thoughtfulness about herself and her art; highly
introspective, driven, yet funny. She explained
that she was a perfectionist and that it took
time for her to enjoy painting.“It took growing
up. When I was young, I liked it, but I’m a
perfectionist, so it was frustrating. Nothing was
ever good enough, so I learned to really enjoy
painting later in life. I’m still a perfectionist, still
looking at the defects, but I can also say that
now that I love it and enjoy it!”
Cristina Manole Sujoy goes by her maiden
name Manole as an artist. She has exhibited
her art works in Fort Lauderdale and Delray
Beach and will soon be in Miami and Boca

The Worker, Home Ownership, and Business
Assistance Act of 2009 (WHBA 2009)

The WHBA 2009 was signed by Presi-
dent Obama on November 6, 2009. This is
good news. However, we are now left with three different versions
of the increasingly popular tax credit which can be a little confusing.
The version that applies depends on the date the buyer bought the
home. A basic overview of the three is as follows:
The initial First Home Buyer Tax Credit required a REFUNDABLE
credit up to $7,500 that is required to be paid back to the government
in installments over 15 years. It is required to be paid back earlier if
your home was sold earlier or if I was not used as your primary
residence. This credit applied to purchases that were made before
December 31, 2008
The first revision which applies to qualifying First Time purchases
after 2008 and before November 7, 2009 expanded the initial Act by:
1) increasing the maximum credit from $7,500 to $8,000 (not to exceed
10% of the homes purchase price) 2) eliminated the 15 year payback
requirement. 3) Required the recapture of the credit when the house
sold or if it was not your principal residence, if the sale or change in use
occurred within 36 months of the date of purchase.
This latest revision, for purchases after November 6, 2009, has been
expanded to include the following: 1) Extended Deadline — The
previous sunset date of November 30, 2009 has been extended to
qualifying, binding home purchase contracts entered into by April 30,
2010, as long as the contract is closed no later than June 30, 2010. 2)
Increased Income Phase-Out Thresholds — The credit phases out
as your modified adjusted gross income increases from $225,000 to

couples separating or filing a family court action once the holidays have

Author Mare Peters provides a “Keep it Simple Sweetie” list that is
truly simple enough to help get anyone started on the road to a more
balanced life and stronger family. Ms. Peters says: “Are you feeling just
a bit blue? Perhaps it’s time to take a look at all you do and make a
resolution to simply care more for you.” Here are a few of her best
suggestions that can help keep balance and ward off family problems:

$245,000 (previously $150k to $170k) on a joint return and $125,000
to $145,000 (previously $75k to $95k) if you are single or filing a
separate return. 3) Qualifying Long-Term Homeowners Now
Qualify — In addition to qualifying first time homebuyers,
homeowners who have owned and used the same principal residence
for any five consecutive year period during the eight year period
immediately preceding the purchase will also qualify for the credit up
to $6,500, 4) Relief for Certain Military and Government
Personnel — Military and certain Government personnel who are on
qualified extended assignments will receive extended deadlines to
purchase a home and relief from the recapture rules. Restrictions have
been added that: 1) limit the purchase price of the property to
$800,000, 2) limit the purchaser’s age to at least 18 years old, and, 3)
Anyone that is eligible to be claimed as another taxpayers dependent
will not qualify.
Hopefully, these enhancements to the Act will stimulate even more
activity in the Real Estate Market than did the initial Tax Credits. At least
the positive direction gives those of us in the industry more positive news.

Summer 2010 Library Program

The Doreen Gauthier Lighthouse Point Library excitedly
announces the plans for their annual Summer Library
Program June 14th through June 18th. The program is
open to children who have completed kindergarten and
through grade 5. We understand that it is still January, but
because of the quality of the events planned and the
associated expense we wanted to give advance notice to
provide ample time to adjust family budgets.
By popular demand our theme is “NASA.”. 2010 marks the
end of the shuttle program. We wish to give our children the
opportunity to learn about NASA and space exploration for
three days provided by Mad Science. These educationally
challenging fun days feature hands-on activities “Star Trek
Live” with numerous take-home projects. The instructors
are all certified teachers whose enthusiasm for science
make the days challenging endeavors.

Ear Infections And How To Recognize Them

You may notice your furry friend shaking its head, flapping or
rubbing its ears along the floors or tilting its head towards an
affected ear. This is your first indication that something is wrong.
Ear infections can be very frustrating and challenging conditions
So what are ears really made of?
The ear is a complex structure with three main parts: the outer
ear flap, the ear canal which terminates at the tympanic membrane
(eardrum).
The middle ear chamber has a tube (Eustachian tube) that
connects with the “nasopharynx” (throat area). Bacteria from the
throat often migrate up this tube into the middle ear causing
infections.
The inner ear is also a complex structure and serves as the
interface between the middle ear and the brain and helps Fluffy to
maintain balance.
Help me! My ears really hurt!
When ears are infected (inflamed), the ear canal becomes
swollen, thickened, painful and moist. This chain of events makes
the ear more hospitable for microorganisms and reduces the size of
the ear canal. The ear at this point will be sore and irritated with a
burning, itchy, sensation that Fluffy will find insatiable. Head
shaking and scratching can lead to ear hematomas (which will
require surgery), bruising and infection of the skin on the side of
the face. The ear infection can spread to the middle ear and inner
ear creating a more serious problem.

Sometimes it’s too painful to examine Fluffy’s ears without

rechecked at regular intervals. Checks on the status of the infection
are necessary, otherwise it can progress into more serious problems
with the middle and inner ear.Your vet will need to ensure that this
does not happen. Cytology swabs will be checked for the number
and type of organisms as a measure of the effectiveness of the
treatment.
What can I do to keep the ears healthy?
• Groomers will pluck the hairs from the ear canal , so groom
regularly
• Use ear cleaning solutions and cotton balls to clean the ears 2 – 4
times a month
• Avoid getting water in the ears and use a drying agent to dry the
ears following swimming and bathing.
• Check the ears regularly for odors, redness, and scratch marks

Belated Third Annual Scroogie Awards

Dear New Year’s Revelers,
I usually write my Scroogie column for December issues. This year,
however, personal problems prevented it.
And rather than just write my traditional New Year’s column, I have
decided to publish my Scroogie awards a month late — in the hopes it
will put a permanent end to the vicious rumor someone started that I
have turned into a nice guy.
I’m not sure who started this rumor, or why, but no one calls me a
nice guy and gets away with it.
I inaugurated my Scroogie awards in 2007, as an homage to my idol
and favorite role model, Ebeneezer Scrooge. And I award Scroogies only
to those who have proved worthy — through acts of inconsiderateness,
boorishness, stupidity, arrogance, or any other trait that just plain rankles
me and deserves my curmudgeonly wrath.
Each year, I encounter the same major problem: hundreds of
candidates, too little space to mention them all. However, those listed
below clearly outdistanced all others.
1 – “Means-well” Scroogie: Dr. Smiles.
That is not really her name, of course. I just don’t want to embarrass
her because I know she really does mean well.
I love Dr. Smiles. Far as I’m concerned, she is the best internist in
South Florida.
However, she recently prescribed a Neti Pot for me to help clear my
sinuses.
“A Neti Pot? What the hell is that? It sounds like a bedside commode
for sick people.”
“It’s great for sinuses. Everybody loves it. You’ll love it, too.
The Neti Pot resembles a mini-teapot, except the end of the spout is
fitted with a knob that will fit into a nostril. You fill the pot with luke warm
water, add a packet of saline powder, stir until dissolved, then tip your head
back and fit the Neti Pot over one nostril. The solution shoots up your
nose, circles around your sinus cavity, then drips out the other nostril.
I saw Dr. Smiles a week later. She asked how I liked the Neti Pot.
“That is not a medical treatment!” I shouted. “It’s waterboarding.”
“It is a very common and popular treatment for sinuses.”
“Oh yeah? Then how come when I finished I confessed to four
burglaries and two house break-ins?”
“Oh, stop complaining. I can tell it helped by the way you sound.”
“Helped? I’m reporting you to the Joint Chiefs of Staff for torture
under the guise of medical treatment.”
She rummaged in a drawer for a gigantic hypodermic.
“It’s time for your flu shot,” she said.
Dr. Smiles knows I don’t mess with anyone who brandishes needles.
2 – “Patients Last” Scroogie: The Benny Hill Clinic.
Even though I am filled with contempt for much of the medical world
in South Florida, Benny Hill was a flat-out, hands-down winner.
Rarely does anyone answer a phone at this world-renowned clinic.
When someone does, the caller is immediately put on hold and must
listen to an endless recorded infomercial.
This clinic houses most of my own personal doctors, all of whom I
rank as superlative. Every once in a while, I try to call one of them. I
now know everything I ever wanted to know about early pregnancies
and nagging PMS problems.
Still, the doctors are outstanding. I once wrote a commendatory
letter to the CEO of this clinic, lauding the medical staff.

He never answered.
Three years ago, I underwent two major operations in the hospital
associated with this clinic. Two separate eight-day stays. As anyone who
has ever spent time in a hospital knows, nurses run everything.
I was so impressed with the nurses and the care I received, I wrote
another laudatory letter to the same CEO.
He never answered that one either.
Instead, I recently received a letter from him. He actually had the
chudspah to ask me to send money to add new programs and services.
I wrote back, saying I would like to contribute a sizable sum, asking
him to phone me personally because I wouldn’t put the figure in
writing.
He actually did call. I put him on hold.
3 – “Instruction Writing” Scroogie: a tie!
I maintain that a special Obfuscation School exists that teaches
technical writers how to write instructions that will deliberately
befuddle consumers while seemingly making sense.
This year’s Scroogie for such obfuscation goes to two brilliant
practitioners who no doubt passed the course with high marks.
A. Cordless phone instructions.
Radio Shack had run out of single phones; I had to buy a two-pack.
Instructions seemed very clear: open the battery pack cover, plug in
the battery pack, close the cover and place the handset in the base of
one of the charging cradles. Let it charge for 24 hours. When fully
charged, place it in the other cradle and the light on the base will begin
to flash. Wait five seconds, then remove. Repeat for the second phone.
To some people, that might seem very simple. However, I now have
one phone that rings when someone calls, then hangs up as soon as I
answer; a flashing light on the other phone, which doesn’t ring at all,
and a Caller ID that indicates I’m receiving a call from someone in
Calcutta, India.
Zenith Corner Caddy for showers.
I love Zenith products. Always have. Very reliable. Last for years.
However, I just bought a corner caddy for my shower. Neat little
thing with two little shelves to hold shampoo and conditioner bottles,
and a little rack for washcloths.
Very simple to put together. All plastic pieces, with double-backed
tape to adhere to the shower wall. Five easy steps: assemble and hang.
They left out step number three.
Okay, it’s a simple little contraption, and I should be able to figure out
how the parts go together, right?
I hung it upside-down.
In anger, I ripped it off and placed it on the shower floor. I still have
two pieces of double-backed tape sticking to the shower wall, which I
cannot remove.
Someone at the Obfuscation School probably got an “A” and a big
laugh when he came up with the idea of omitting an instruction step.

While there are many others deserving of a Scroogie, I don’t have
room in this column to mention them. However, I can assure you they
will all show up in the February issue of this magazine.

Jumping Into The Deep End

I was talking with a friend of mine a few
days ago, and she was saying that she
would very much like to make friends
here, but that she is so shy and intimidated. As we explored it a bit
further, I was somewhat taken aback. This is a very attractive,
intelligent, winsome lady. She is wonderful mother and wife. I shared
with her that I too feel those pangs of shyness or intimidation, and
that sometimes I just needed to “hold my nose,” as it were, and jump
into the deep end.
I am not certain why, but since then, that conversation has been
rolling around in my mind. I suppose I have been thinking about it
so much because from time-to-time we are each caused to face those
aspects of our personality that are challenging and difficult, and that
are holding us back from being the person we want to become. Why
is that; I wonder.
I suspect the root of the problem is probably fear. There is always
a fear of being rejected, or of not being smart enough, or cleaver
enough, or…? Basil King, many years ago wrote a book with the
arresting title of The Conquest of Fear, and in it he offers this most
startling comment, BE BOLD — AND MIGHTY FORCES WILL COME
TO YOUR AID.
Really? That’s quite a statement.
Then again, the more I have pondered it, the more I have to admit
that in the past whenever I have fallen short, it has been almost never
because I have tried and failed, and it is almost always because I have

Emotional and Financial Costs
of Overpricing Your Home By Jackie Smith
In today’s market, remember the
two white elephants in the room (Fore-
closures) and (Excessive Inventory)!
If the listing price is not justifiable,
resist the temptation to list your home higher than comparable
solds or pending sales.
View your upgrades realistically. Upgrades will help you sell
faster but do not always translate dollar for dollar in terms of
pricing. While this appraisal logic befuddles me, it holds true
consistently. Example: You remodel your home with an
expensive, designer kitchen, new upscale baths, etc., and spend
$250,000. The house across the street, same size, same land,
same location, is not upgraded. You believe you should get
$250,000 more. But you may only get $100,000 more.
If you succumb to overpricing your home, (which is natural
tendency and easy to do) you are about to enter a world of
emotional suffering and financial losses unimaginable. First, your
home sits on the market with buyers coming and going but no
offers. Then, you get the first price change. If it’s not enough,
you get the same response. Meanwhile, every month that goes by,
you’re spending thousands of dollars in carrying costs.
Soon, your home is pegged as “tired” since it’s been on the
market for over 100 days and so in desperation, there is another
significant price drop. But, by this time, buyers start thinking
that since so many other buyers passed up your home, there
must be something wrong with it. After months of this stigma,

allowed fear to stop me from trying at all. On the other hand, when
I have plunged deeply “into the water,” as it were, impelled by a
momentary flash of courage, I have always been able to swim until I
got my feet on the ground again.
Boldness, you know, is not reckless or foolhardy, not at all.
Boldness requires a deliberate decision to, perhaps, bite off more
than we have ever been able to chew before. Boldness is not vague
or mysterious. It requires us to call up the latent powers of energy,
skill, judgment, creative ideas — and maybe even physical strength
and endurance.
That idea of being bold works, I think, in almost any area we might
consider — finding a friend, creating community, taking on the chair
of some committee, perhaps, or taking a new job. And unless we are
hopelessly unqualified, I am suggesting we will deliver, our pride,
our competitive instinct, our sense of obligation will see us through.
Isn’t it curious how spiritual laws carry-over into almost any aspect
of life.
Now, with all this said, this personality trait — this putting ourselves
in a position where we are required to extend ourselves — is not
achieved overnight. It takes practice. It can be taught to children and
developed in adults. Confidence though is a cumulative thing.
One of the most astute observations I have ever heard is,
Love life. Be grateful for it always. And show your gratitude by not
shying away from its challenges. Try always to live a bit beyond your
capacities. You’ll find that you never succeed.
finally, you give up, and drop the price again. Result, a buyer
comes in, knows you’re primed for a lowball offer, and that’s
exactly what you get.
Meantime, with all the showings, you’re exhausted because
every showing means picking up the home. You invest huge
emotional energy causing stress. It’s difficult to sleep at night.
You start asking, “What’s wrong with my home?” Truth is,
nothing, but you started off overpriced, and the market has
punished you.
If you really want to sell your home, and move on, come to
terms with the reality of today’s market. Always, the market sets
the price.
And when other homes are similar, but priced right, and sell,
it’s because those sellers faced the reality squarely in the eye,
and made a conscious decision: If I want to really sell and move
on with my life, I will have to price to sell. These sellers get out
sooner, do not have lost carrying costs or emotional drain.While
you’re shaking your head in complete disappointment, these
astute sellers are already off and starting their new lives.
Overpricing your home is an expensive, frustrating, agonizing
lesson to learn. Please try to resist the temptation to overprice.

A Healthy New Year?
Now that the holidays are over, you may
be considering or perhaps are already
working on a New Year resolution that you
made a few weeks ago. Each January, we hear patient’s tell us, “This
year, I’m going to lose weight,” or “This year, I’m going to join a gym
or start exercising” just to name a few. Unfortunately, although these
resolutions were made with good intentions most people eventually
fall back into their old habits within a few weeks and the resolution
is soon forgotten. There may be a multitude of factors responsible for
the demise of these resolutions, but the primary factor is always the
same, it was going to take some commitment and take us out of our
comfort zone! If you could only lose weight and stay healthy by
watching TV and eating snacks all day it would be great wouldn’t it!
Your health however is your single most important investment
and as such, should be your top priority. It is the one thing in life that
you have the most control of. All that you have and will accumulate
in life is meaningless if you are not healthy enough to enjoy it later on.
Fortunately, it’s never too late to start, and although you may not be
able to reverse all of the damage you have created in the past, you
can certainly stop it or slow it down starting right now.
So if you have made a healthy resolution, I encourage you to stick
to it. If not, and are considering one, let me give you a few
suggestions. The two most important factors affecting your health
are diet and exercise. So let’s keep this very simple, if you are not
exercising at all, start walking at least 15 to 20 minutes a day, several

The Gift Of Sight For The New Year
The month of January is National Eye Care
month. 2010 is the year to be more practical
and less frivolous with your choices. Make
New Year's resolutions to improve and
enhance your family's life by giving the gift
of sight to your or your love ones! Regardless of how you choose to
celebrate the New Year, the fact still remains that our eye health, and the
health of our family's eyes, should be the number one priority.
The following are suggestions from Dr.Gary Goberville’s Sight
Savers' list. Consider an eye exam and give sight to a special child
or adult in your life. One of the top reasons for a child’s poor
performance in school is poor vision. Ten million school children
in America have vision conditions that impact learning.Your child's
first comprehensive eye assessment should be scheduled at six
months of age. A test for health problems such as retinal blastoma,
visual acuity, excessive or unequal amounts of nearsightedness,
farsightedness, and astigmatism needs to be preformed. Evaluation
of eye alignment which examine eye teaming ability should also be
done.Although problems are not common, it is important to identify
children who have risk factors at this stage. Later, children as young
as three years old should have an eye exams on an annual basis to
rule out lazy eye or other health problems.
Looking to enhance your child's education? Select toys that
stimulate visual development, improve hand-eye coordination and
demonstrate spatial relationships. Eye-friendly toys help develop

times a week. If you are unable to walk, use any other form of
activity that you are capable of to help increase your heart rate.
Regarding diet, I could speak volumes on this but since space is
limited we will again keep it very simple. The three most important
things to eliminate or significantly reduce from your diet are sugar,
refined grains and bad fats. Reducing these items alone will
significantly lower your risk for cancer, diabetes, heart disease,
Alzheimer’s, and arthritis just to name few. Sugar is found
everywhere and is often cleverly disguised by the food manufac-
tures so you must learn how to read labels. If the label contains
sugar, high fructose corn syrup or sucrose within the first few
ingredients, just say no! Refined grains include most all breads,
breakfast cereals, rolls, bagels and white rice. Bad fats are the “trans
fatty acids” which are most often labeled as hydrogenated, partially
hydrogenated or fractionated oils. Most highly processed foods are
loaded with sugars and bad fats and many of those foods labeled as
“Low Fat” contain incredible amounts of sugar otherwise people
would not eat it!
So if you are looking for a healthy new year’s resolution that is
relatively easy to stick with now you have it. Start exercising, just
some walking will do for now, and start reducing the sugar, refined
grains and bad fats from your diet. Remember, the image you see in
the mirror today is the result of how you have taken care of your
health for the last several years. How good a job have you done?

decreased vision, and reduced efficiency. The most common
problems are related to improper eyeglasses. Presbyopic users are
more comfortable with progressive lenses, which give proper range
of distance. Computer lenses without a line offer a greater field of
vision. Use glare resistant lenses to reduce glare from your computer
that can cause eye strain. .
Help preserve eyesight with an Optomap laser retinal exam.The
Optomap evaluates the health of the inner layer of the eye, and
other health problems. AGE-related macular degeneration (AMD)
destroys the vision of millions of people and robs them of their
independence. Prevention is the key, and an Optomap can detect
these problems.

SMOTHERED STEAK BURGERS MIXED VEGATABLE AND RICE PILAF

Yield: 4 servings (serving size: 1 burger) Yield: 7 servings (serving size: 1 cup)

MORACCAN PUMPKIN SOUP

Yield: 8 servings (serving size: about 2/3 cup soup, Preparation
1 teaspoon yogurt, and 1 1/2 teaspoons cilantro) 1. Combine first 7 ingredients in a large saucepan; bring to a boil. Cover,
reduce heat, and simmer 10 minutes or until vegetables are tender.

Hot Off the Grill

FILLETS
When times get tough, a filet mignon
dinner might blitz your budget. Growing
up in Wisconsin, our family finances were
as tough as beef jerky so Mom did a some magical culinary work
and created special hamburgers that where prepped to feel and look
like filets! The rich flavor of these morsels made them one of my
favorites! Take a few minutes in the morning to prep up some Poor
Johnny Fillets for your dinner or pre-game tailgate. Your fans will be
so impressed with the fillet’s presentation and taste that they’ll
forget you’re serving them on a hamburger budget!
PREP
• 6 slices bacon
• 1 lb. lean ground beef
• Lemon pepper
• 1/4 c. parmesan cheese
• 2oz can mushroom pieces,
drained/chopped
• 2 T finely chopped onion
• 1 T finely chopped green
pepper
• 2 T finely chopped sun dried tomato
• 3 T finely chopped pimiento-stuffed olives*
• 3 T finely chopped Italian parsley*
* Save remaining portions for pasta
1 lb. cooked whole-wheat linguine
Partially cook bacon slices in microwave and set aside to cool.
Pat ground beef onto a sheet of waxed paper in a 8x12" rectangle
shape, keeping it about 1/4 inch thick. Sprinkle with lemon pepper
first, followed by the parmesan cheese. Mix mushrooms, olives,
onion, tomato, green pepper and parsley in a small bowl. Spread
mixture evenly over the meat. Beginning from the short end, roll
tightly like a jelly roll. Cut roll into 1 and a half inch slices (about
5-6 pieces). Wrap the outside edges of each slice with a piece of
bacon and secure with a wooden toothpick.
READY
Heat grill to medium-high heat and oil grill grates.
LETS GRILL!
Grill over medium heat for 7-8 min. on each side flipping only once!
Serve on a platter of whole-wheat linguine tossed with remaining
sun dried tomatoes in oil and olives. Garnish with Italian parsley.

Prescription Drug Misuse
Prevention in 2010

The increased misuse of prescription drugs in Broward
County has not gone unnoticed by law makers or law
enforcement. The Broward County Medical Examiner had more
than 500 drug-related overdose deaths last year and statistics
show that more than 25,000 people die from unintentional drug
overdoses in our nation annually. Frequently, a variety of illicit
drugs and prescription drugs were the direct and immediate
cause of the victim’s death. Most people do not realize the
hazards associated with combining pharmaceuticals with illicit
drugs. Oftentimes, mixing drugs can create an unintended and
unpredictable lethal mixture.
Our undercover operations revealed many out-of-state drug
addicts and dealers are coming into Broward County to obtain
prescriptions for narcotics from pain clinics. These clinics are
known as “pill mills” and the patients are “doctor-shopping” —
looking for willing doctors to dispense drugs. In November 2009,
the Broward Grand Jury recommended 18 steps to clean up
Florida’s “pill mills.” The most important step — implementing
the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) — which is an
electronic database to track excessive dispensing of prescription
drugs to doctor-shopping patients. If these recommendations are
followed it will go a long way in eliminating prescription drugs
prescribed to dealers and addicts in Broward County.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office continually conducts law
enforcement operations to target illegal prescription drug abuse,
but in 2010 we are stepping up our efforts with an important
educational component. Through FDLE’s Byrne/JAG stimulus
grant funding we were able to hire a prescription drug
prevention specialist — Christine Sawyer. Ms. Sawyer will
provide prescription drug prevention and education presen-
tations to community and homeowner associations, middle and
high school students and child based organizations.
Additionally, our agency, in partnership with The United Way’s
Commission on Substance Abuse, are planning a multitude of
prescription drug “take back” programs throughout Broward
County. Participants can drop off their unwanted or unused
prescription drugs with no questions asked and receive a $5.00
gift card to local stores and pharmacies. To schedule a

Removing Web Tracks From Your Computer

If you have a computer, then you have web tracks.What are they?
Web tracks or footprints, as they are commonly referred to, are those
tiny traces that remain on your hard drive after you have used the
Internet to read your mail, chat with your friends, browse through
online stores, or any other activity that necessitates the use of the
Internet.An individual’s Internet use is tracked.This information is then
stored on the computer. Web tracks typically include the browser
history, the browser cache, the auto complete history, and cookies.
More specifically, all of the keywords that you type into the
search bar are stored on the computer. Plus, the URLs that you type
into the browser are kept in storage on the computer. Information
from each web page that you visit is stored on the computer’s hard
drive along with the identifiers from each and every web page that
you visit.
You might find yourself wondering why the computer maintains
all of this data in its resources. It does so to facilitate the loading of
web pages that you visit frequently. Some of this information is
found in the drop down menu for the search and address bars,
offering the computer user the opportunity to simply click and surf
without typing in the full word or address.
Many people like having web tracks on their computers strictly
for this reason.The existence of faster-loading web pages means less
waiting time for the computer users who are actively searching the
web and browsing multiple web sites.
Unfortunately, having web tracks stored on the computer also
means that a lot of personal information is also stored on the
computer. Is this a problem? Not initially, but it can become a
problem if your computer becomes infected by spyware or if
someone uses your computer without your permission.
Personal information that is typically stored on a computer
includes the passwords, account numbers, email addresses, etc that
are stored in the autocomplete file. Anyone or any spyware
application that has access to your computer has access to this data
unless you remove it from your computer.
It is possible to clear your web tracks from your computer almost
effortlessly so that you can maintain the security of your personal
information. Removing web tracks can be completed manually or
through the use of a web track eraser. A web track eraser is an
application that can be installed onto the computer and run so that
it erases all evidence of selected data.
To remove web tracks from your computer, you must follow a
short set of directions that have been designed for use with specific
web browsers. Simply follow the instructions for the web browser
that you have. The directions might vary slightly depending on the
version of the browser that you are currently using.
Removing Web Tracks in Internet Explorer:
1. Open up Internet Explorer.
2. Navigate to Tools at the top of the screen and click.
3. Select Internet Options.
4. Select the General tab in the Internet Options dialog box.
5. Select Clear History.
6. Click on ok.

Removing Web Tracks in Firefox:
1. Open up Firefox.
2. Navigate to Tools at the top of the screen and click.
3. Select Clear Private Data.
4. Click the clear button next to Browsing History as well as any
other data that you would like to delete including cookies,
cache, passwords, etc.
5. Click on ok.
Removing Web Tracks in Opera:
1. Open up Opera.
2. Navigate to Edit and open up Menu.
3. Select Preferences.
4. Select Navigator, which is listed under the category title.
5. Select Clear History within the History listing.
6. Click on ok.
Removing Web Tracks in Mozilla:
1. Open up Mozilla.
2. Go to Edit and open Menu.
3. Select Preferences.
4. Select Navigator under the category title.
5. Select Clear History under History.
6. Click on ok.
To remove Web Tracks in Netscape:
1. Open Netscape.
2. Navigate to Edit and open Menu.
3. Select Preferences.
4. Select Navigator.
5. Select Clear History.
6. Click on ok.
There are a number of web track eraser applications or privacy
management tools available on the market today. These programs
are designed to remove all traces of web tracks from a computer.
It is important to periodically remove all traces of your web
tracks from your computer to maintain the safety of the personal
information that you have stored there.Taking these important steps
and a few others can go a long way toward keeping your personal
information for your eyes only. It is also important to keep your
computer secure at all times with current virus protection updates,
update operating system patches and realize that that using an
unsecured wireless network can pose a significant risk to your data
security as the contents stored on your wireless device can be
accessed by anyone who is on the same network.
Unfortunately there will always be identity thieves, hackers
and other criminals whose goal it is to separate you from your
money and your financial reputation. The best defense is to stay
informed about new threats as they materialize, and to immediately
take the steps necessary to stay protected from those new and

Don’t Forget Your License!

In today’s world you need a permit for most construction and
many repair projects around your home. Many of these projects can
be accomplished by the homeowner with a homeowner permit.
Permit applications are available at the building department
located at 3701 N.E. 22nd Avenue, Lighthouse Point, Florida 33064.
Replacement water heaters, air conditioners, plumbing fixtures,
tree removal, landscape lighting, pavers, new fences and fence repair
are some examples of what Lighthouse Point requires a permit.
When the repair is an emergency, like a water heater failure, the
City will usually let you do the work (with permission from the
Chief Inspector) and get the permit after the fact.
When applying for a permit in Lighthouse Point you will need
the following information for the application. The owner’s name,
address and phone number are all common request. You will
also need the property’s legal description, tax folio number and a
drawing (two copies) showing the changes you are doing to
the property. In some cases you will need a copy of the survey.
You may need to sign an affidavit stating that you are doing the
work yourself.
When the job value exceeds $2,500.00 you will need a Notice
of Commencement (A.K.A. Mechanics Lien Law) signed, notarized
and filed with the County. The address is 115 S. Andrews Avenue
Room 114, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33301. The County charges
$12.50 for the filing. You will also need to sign the permit

acknowledging that the value of the work is over $2,500.00. The
City requires a deposit of $50.00 when submitting applications.

4. Small storage sheds
5. Play ground sets
6. Hot tubs — The portable plug in type
7. Roof repair on leaks less than 100 sq. ft.
When the work is ready for an inspection you can schedule a
next day inspection by calling 954-784-3449 before 3:00 p.m. In
most cases the City will not be able to give you a time for the
inspection. You will need to arrange to have someone there with
the permit and drawings to meet with the inspector.
If you chose to hire a contractor to do any work for you and
they ask you to apply for the permits. This usually means that they
are not properly licensed or insured.Your best bet is to use someone
that is established in the community that can offer references.

private affairs with his band, which varies from two to
twelve pieces.
“I’ve been singing since I was a kid. Then I decided to
become a hairdresser as a back up. After training for years
with some of the finest haircutters and colorists in New
York I moved to South Florida. I began singing in some of
the most memorable nightclubs in town for almost fifteen
years. Many will remember Mr. Pips, Septembers and Mr
Laffs. While I was in the spotlight I decided to use that
attention and open a salon. I named it Varon Salon and
surrounded myself with some of the finest talent in the
hair business.What a wonderful way to grow and practice
what I had trained to do for years. Singing at night with
South Florida’s best musicians; doing hair by day and loving
them both. I was even making some real money at the
same time. What a life.”

So many of them you’ve been listening to for years
including that familiar Maroone commercial we cant get
rid of… sorry Elliott but it’s true.
His repertoire includes music for all ages, from the 40’s
to top 40. As a matter of fact he found himself having to
become the perfect Dee Jay for the younger crew that
were getting tired of Sinatra…how dare they. Elliott even
decided to beg his brother Stan, a fabulous singer and
guitar player to move down from New York to help him
out.They’re making music and happy to be doing it. By the
way…yes indeed, they do take requests.
