Mall: Arabian Center

Date: 26-05-2014
The Management at Arabian center had a big meeting, but I talked to few retail outlets which said the
mall has its own hiring process and keeps a constant staff except for a few occasions such as it hired
extra security guards during an event when Shahrukh khan had visited the mall.

HomesRus
I spoke to Mohd. Abdallah (Supervisor- HomesRus, 0556313997, dulamohd@gmail.com). HomesRus is a
furniture retail store. He told the store has an average footfall of 150 per day, and it has 48 employees in
store (for 2 shifts, including carpenters back operations, logistics, sales, Manager, supervisors). The two
shifts are 10.00-19.00, 13.30-22.30. The peak seasons for the stores are Ramadan and before vacations
in summers and Christmas. During peak seasons or peak days they keep make their staff do overtime
and pay them for overtime, for eg.: if some person is unable to attend work the next day then they ask a
person from second shift to come for the first shift and pay him accordingly, if they feel there is a need
for extra staff in the evening they ask persons from first shift to stay back for the work and pay them
overtime. The store has a decent policy for absenteeism they give warnings for first few occasions of
absenteeism without reason and cut their pay (termed as LOP) and fire them if the employees remain
absent often enough to affect their business. They hire people directly in dubai region but have agents
in India, Sri Lanka, Philippines. Also, interestingly they hire people through agencies in case of urgent
needs but they dont have any preferred agency as it has happened very rarely. They provide 1 day leave
to each employee in a week (No leave to any employee on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday) + 30 days in a
year paid leaves, although, they have a very low absenteeism rate like once in a month. They do have to
face challenges in term getting proper staff for the furniture business as they require relevant work
experience with respect to retail sector and carpentry/ furniture. The person who can be contacted for
hiring is Mr. Abhishek (HR HomesRus, 04-2672222).
He also told that the mall has a constant staff and they dont hire or fire people based on the footfall.

Emirates Sports stores

I spoke to Mr. Anbalagan Arumugan (Coordinator- retails, Mo.: 0505345216). He has been working with
this company for 27 years. He said that the stores peak season are the months of January to March and
Ramadan-mid and for the mall basically months of Oct to Feb, DSF, Weekends, Evenings. The store has
four employees and they hire one or two more in case they find they require during peak seasons. As
told by him that the mall does not hire based on the footfall even during peak seasons as their staff
mainly comprise of cleaners, security personnel, office staff, pickup drivers. This store has a direct
recruitment process and it hires people who have immense knowledge of retail sector and experience in
the industry is a must. They provide 1 day off in a week and a month leave in the whole year. They dont
allow any absenteeism as the staff is less and they have strict policies for unreasonable absenteeism and
a pay-cut. This person himself handles the hiring of staff.
