Figure 4 shows the sides AO, PO and OL of three different regular polygons. Given that
∠AOP = 60° and ∠POL = 156°, calculate

(i) the size of ∠AOL,

(b) A trapezium ABCD has parallel sides AB and CD. Given that AB = 7 cm, CD = 17 cm and that
the area of the trapezium is 234 cm2, calculate the perpendicular distance between the parallel
sides.

3. The straight lines BA and CD when produced meet at O. Given that OA = 5.2 cm, AB = 4.8 cm,
OD = 4 cm and CD = 9 cm,

that BE = CD. Prove that

(b) At the point B, construct the perpendicular BX to AB, such that BX = 6 cm, and X lies on the
same side of AB as C.

(c) Construct the locus of points which are equidistant from B and C.

(d) The locus in part (c) meets BX at P. Measure and write down the length PX.

7. (a) Prove that if two chords of a circle intersect inside the circle the rectangle contained by the
parts of the one is equal to the rectangle contained by the parts of the other.

(a) Construct the triangle ABC in which BC = 9 cm, ∠ACB = 30°, AB = 6 cm and ∠CBA is obtuse.

(b) Measure and write down the length AC.

10. (a) Prove that in any triangle, the sum of the squares on any two sides is equal to twice the square
on half the third side together with twice the square on the median which bisects the third side.

Figure 9 shows a triangle ABF. The points, C, D and E lie on BF such that
BC = CD = DE = EF. The triangles ABD, ACE and ADF have medians AC, AD and AE
respectively. Given that AC = l cm, AD = m cm, AE = n cm, AB = 2p cm, AF = 2q cm and
BF = 4r cm, show that

(i) 2l2 = m2 – 2r2 + 4p2,

11. (a) Prove that the angle which an arc subtends at the centre of a circle is twice that which it
subtends at any point on the remaining part of the circumference. Only one general case need
be considered.
