Land Resource

Establish a policy that will limit the exportation of phosphate and use it instead in its own
land for the production of food and other distinct agricultural produce to export in
neighboring countries.

About 80 percent of the land area has been devastated after phosphate has been excavated, leaving a
landscape unsuitable for any other kind of industry or agriculture. With this policy, Nauru will use its
deposits of phosphate to fertilize its soil and make it available for vegetation and producing crops for
domestic consumption. In effect, the policy will create more jobs in agricultural sector and it will cease the
countrys dependency on other countries for basic commodity such as food and fresh water. This policy
also has a health benefit to the islands residents because it will strike down the widespread problem of
obesity, diabetes and other illnesses that can be associated to obesity. Healthier residents also mean
productive and efficient workforce which in turn results to an inclusive growth. The island might also be
able to export a new line of product that came from their new agricultural sector.

Organize a rehabilitation and conservation program for the islands environment and
forestry to promote sustainable development and create a better habitat for wildlife.

The policy aims to prohibit any other exploitation of natural resource to prevent bigger damage in the
islands environment and to preserve what is left in the country. Since the only brand of tourism that the
Nauru offers is ecotourism, it is necessary for the country to protect whatever wildlife and environment it
has currently. For instance, many indigenous birds have disappeared in Nauru due to the destruction of
their habitat. The country cannot afford this kind of loss anymore, which is why rehabilitation of its
damaged environment is of utmost importance.

Formulate a land management plan that will efficiently divide the limited amount of area to
meet the demands of agricultural sector, mining sector, commercial sector, institutional
facilities, housing, and other infrastructures.

The purpose of this policy is to protect the scarce land resources, facilitate sustainable and productive
land-use, and improve land administration in the island. With an efficient division, quality of life will
improve and the island will also be more accommodating not just for tourists but also to investors who
would like to start their businesses in the island. Protected areas and private property rights will be easily
accounted. The policy will also promote harmony and participation among the public sector. In addition to
that, the policy will strengthen information systems and create a systematic assessment of environmental,
economic and social land use.
