The best teacher is one who is very knowledgeable about the subject matter.
Nowadays, for most of the people school have been a very important and constant part of their life, thus
teachers are some of the people we spend lot of our time with. As well as we come across so often,
teachers are people who influence our lives very much. While there are many featurea a teacher may
have, the knowledge about the subject matter is the only one most people talk about. Neverthless, there
are more important qulities that matter when we talk about a teacher, such as his pedagogical skills and
the interest he shows for the student.
Talking about a good teacher, it is indeed important that he knows lots about his subject. But the best
teacher knows how to share his knowledge with his students, hence the importance of his pedagogic
skills. Obvious, for students it's useless to have a very well prepared teacher if he/she is not understood
by them. For example, in general school I had a teacher who knew physics at the highest levels, he
even won some contest in the subject with his research and demonstrations, but, none of his students,
including myself knew much about the subject. Although he teached everything we were supposed to
know and solved problems about the subjects involved, such mechanics and termodinamics, we
couldn't understand a thing. The way he structured the subject wasn't fit for our level. Inspite of having
a very well knowledgeable about the subject matter teacher in general school, we were unprepared for
highschool physics.
Moreover, it is important for a teacher to understand his student. Most of the students are emotionally
involved in their studies: if they don't like the teacher, they don't like the subject, but, if they like the
teacher, they try to understand the subject even if it is not their favourite. Teachers who can put
themselves in students' shoes tend to be loved and appreciated more than the ones that don't. It is
important for a student to feel that he is understood by someone and to know that if he/she does a
mistake, the teacher can forgive them. If a student is afraid of a teacher because his situation was never
undestood, his performances in the subject will be lower than normal. All the students I know have
always appreciated more a teacher who sees them more as people with more issues than school, not
only as students only involved in one subject. Consequently, as people care about the way they are
treated by a teacher, there is no way the best teacher can have a lack of empathy or understanding for hs
students.
Thus, the best teacher should be both a very good educator and an empathic person, before he is very
knowledgeable about the subjects matter, although this is also very important. Teachers should prepare
those qulities while they study more and more about their subject. In my opinion, a student can't
overlook some lacks in teacher's knowledges, but pedagogical skills and emphaty are the ones that turn
a good teacher into the best one. Developing other skills for class is important for a teacher, but there is
no way that they should neglect their theoretical preparation of the subject.
