Experiment

: Dark, dull objects absorb and give out heat better

Theory

3.
4.

Dark, dull objects absorb heat better than white, shiny objects.
Dark, dull objects give out heat better than white , shiny objects.
White, shiny objects reflects heat better than dark and dull objects.
The ability of an object to absorb or give out heat rays depends on the surface condition
of the object.

Apparatus and materials

3 thermometer
A sheet of black paper
A sheet of white paper
A sheet of clear cellophane.

6.

Lay the 3 thermometers near one another on a flat surface in the sunshine.
Record their temperatures.
Cover each thermometer with one of the sheets and leave them for about 20 minutes.
Remove each sheet in turn and quickly read the temperature of the thermometer.
Record the data.
Analysis the data.

Procedure

Question
1. Which is the best surface for reflecting heat radiation?
2. Which is the best surface for absorbing heat radiation?
3. Why are houses painted white in hot countries?

Why I choose this experiment?

I choose the experiment because the material and apparatus is very easy to find and the cost is
cheap. I can provide all the materials to the student so that they can carry out the experiment
individually since the cost is very cheap. Only the thermometer, I need to make sure that the
school have enough quantity for all the student. Or else, I can divide the student into groups.
Besides, I think this is very simple experiment where student can re-do at home but they can
replace the thermometer by just touch the paper/material by their own hand to detect which is
the hottest among the hot.
How you conduct this experiment?
Since this is very simple experiment and not harmful to the student, im sure there will be no
problem while conducting this experiment. I will try to do the experiment first before teach my
student and collect the data for my analysis. Then, I write an instant report as my guide line
while conducting this experiment so that I can control the student and situation while
conducting this experiment in real class.
Why choose the questions?
The question given is based on the result student collect from the experiment. Then the last
question is a higher order thinking level for the level of the student to relate the learning with
their surrounding. This is to encourage them to thinking and learning based on their
surrounding.
Budget
This experiment dont cost me so much. Just half of a white A4 paper, half of a black A4 paper,
half of a A4 cellophane, a thermometer provided by the school laboratory and free sunlight as
our heat source.
Conclusion
In a conclusion, my module is very friendly to student to learning and understanding since I use
material and apparatus that are familiar items to them. This is very easy for them to understand
the learning since they can relate it with their surrounding. Other than that, this will make them
easy to share the learning with their peer or family at home. They can do the experiment by
their own at home easily.
