Double
barrelled

Ballans Cindy Marsh and Bacchus Marshs Latteliah De

Spirt are officially rodeo queens after winning the ladies
barrel racing and Allround Cowgirl events at the national
rodeo championships.
Mother-of-two Cindy Marsh made it a double, winning
back-to-back championships in barrel racing in 2013 and
2014.
Her meet times at the National Rodeo Council of Australia (NRCA) ladies barrel race event at Dalby showgrounds on November 7 and 8 were 15.01 seconds and
15.11 seconds.
Marsh said both she and Sue (a six-year-old quarter
horse gelding named after the song A Boy Named Sue)
just clicked and worked together and were an awesome
team.
Their feat was even more remarkable given Sue bucked
Cindy off in January and left her with a broken leg.
I was out of action for a few months but had my first
rodeo back in Marrabel on October 1 and came second,
she said.
It comes with the territory. Ive been doing rodeo races
my whole life. I also had a broken shoulder four years
ago.
She said becoming a rodeo champion took hard work,
dedication, courage and you have to get the right horse.
You need him to go as fast as he can but be thinking
with you, she said.
The 40-year-old said the buckles proclaiming her an
Australian rodeo champion made it all worth it. These
buckles are what you strive for.

The Bacchus Marsh district will

almost double in population by 2041.
Join Moorabool Shire Council to discuss the issues and
opportunities for retail, housing, employment, transport,
roads, agriculture, the environment and community
facilities at community workshops on:

Fruit enthusiasts enjoyed a

number of tasty pleasures
last week to help celebrate
the launch of the 8th annual
Strawberries and Cherries
Weekend.
Cakes, slices and wines
made from local produce
were enjoyed in hand with a
number of Moorabools ripest and juiciest strawberries.
Held at Naturipe Fruits, the
launch on Thursday morning commended local growers as they gear up for the
festival, and keep agriculture in Moorabool alive.
Moorabool Shire mayor
Paul Tatchell said the festival
plays an integral part in the
development of the district.
It is easy to take agriculture for granted, but without
it, Bacchus Marsh wouldnt
exist, he said.
The annual weekend attracts more than 13,000
people each year, and takes
place at the beginning of
the strawberry and cherry
season.
Situated along the Avenue
of Honour and throughout
Bacchus Marsh, the weekend includes a number of
events such as the infamous
strawberry
and
cherry
picking-trail, Saturday night
fireworks, strawberry and
cherry inspired menus and
the popular pip-spitting
competition, held at Jeff
Jones Plants and Produce.
Conducted by the Bacchus
Marsh Tourism Association,
the weekend is dedicated to
growing awareness for the
region and its fabulous local
produce.
The Bacchus Marsh Tourism Association does a
magnificent job of keeping
the spotlight on Bacchus
Marsh, Cr Tatchell said.
We build our towns
around agriculture and we
shouldnt lose sight of that.
The annual Strawberries
and Cherries Weekend will
take place this weekend
from 10am to 5pm daily,
with music and fireworks
scheduled for Saturday, November 22 from 5pm. For

Double barrelled

from page 1

Latteliah De Spirt capped off a remarkable year by winning the Allround Cowgirl at the rodeo with a
second place in breakaway roping
and third place in barrel racing.
Earlier this year the 19-year-old
won the Australian High School
Rodeo Association championship
for breakaway roping, which
qualified her for both the NRCA
event and a spot in the world high
school rodeo championships in the
United States.
The teenager travelled to the
United States in July to compete
and her time of 2.4 seconds in the
second round of the breakaway
roping event earned her a coveted
United States college scholarship
in Oklahoma.
Ill be joining their rodeo team
and competing in college rodeos,
De Spirt said.
The scholarship is for four years
if I like and Ill probably leave next
year. Im most looking forward to
furthering my career in rodeoing.
She said while it was an amazing
opportunity, shed have to leave
behind her two horses (14-year-old
Blue and seven-year-old Pozzi) and
purchase new horses over there.
De Spirt said Cindy Marsh was a
great mentor and support to her
and shed known Marsh a long
time.
Shes helped me a lot in my
rodeo career and I travelled to a
lot of rodeos with Cindy and her
family, she said.

Organiser Mary Williams said this

years event would be a bit more lighthearted because of the Ballan Red
Cross units 100-year celebrations held
back in August.
For the first time they will forego a
guest speaker and instead feature a
guest singer local identity Jim Leahy.

However other components of the

show will remain the same, with avid
gardeners vying for prizes in categories

The flower show will be held on Friday,
November 28 at 12 noon, together with
a luncheon, at the Ballan Mechanics

Luncheon tickets are $20 and
entries into the flower show are free.

was approved on May 3,
2014 for the Wombat State
Forest covering 37 hectares

Forestcare will run an information day and conduct
a flora walk on the site this
Saturday.
Wombat Forestcare spokeswoman Gayle Osborne said
the site encompassed a beautiful area of Sedgy Riparian
Woodland with large old

the Werribee River.
The proposed work programs includes hard rock
open cut and underground

Wombat Forestcare considers such activity to be totally

is a catchment for the Werribee River, Ms Osborne
said.

Students market their wares

Bacchus Marsh Community College

students will offer an array of craft items
and plants this weekend, during a student
market day held on campus.
The group of six, studying a Certificate 1
In General Education for Adults, have been
working together to create a number of items
for sale, including Christmas craft items,
plants and vegetables.
The Bacchus Marsh Mens Shed will provide
a sausage sizzle, alongside a number of
planter boxes, which the students have
decorated to sell.
Community College teacher and market
organiser, Jacqui Saultry said the market was
part of a class assessment, with all proceeds
going towards a new set of dictionaries, and
other classroom books.

Its only a small class, but the students have

put in a lot of effort. Weve planted seeds and
seedlings, and one lady has her own craft
business so she is able to teach the other
students a number of skills, she said.
However, the market will also provide them
with the experience of running something
like this. There is a lot of organising to do,
and its also about corresponding with
other people. The [Community College]
embroidery field are also having something
for the Strawberry and Cherries Festival, so
it is about liaising with other groups around
Bacchus Marsh.
The Student Market will run from 9:30am
2pm this Saturday, November 22 at 229 Main
Street, Bacchus Marsh. For more information
contact the Bacchus Marsh Community
College on 5367 1061.

Liberal candidate for Buninyong Ben Taylor said:
Illegal and unsightly graffiti is a blight on our local
streetscape and can make people feel less safe in their
own community.
Portable graffiti removal systems are valuable assets in
the ongoing fight against graffiti as they help community
members remove graffiti as quickly as possible after it
appears.
The graffiti removal system consists of a 120-litre wheelie
bin, a high-pressure water system, graffiti removal
products and personal protective equipment.

Jessie Constantinou endured

every dog owners worst nightmare when she returned home
to Mt Egerton last Tuesday
night.
Her nine-year-old Jack Russell
terrier Diesel had been snatched
from her backyard by another
dog and mauled to death.
Ms Constantinou said shed
left Diesel tethered to a swivel
stake with a nine-metre-long
cord because the fencing was
inadequate and all that remained was his collar.
A dog has come into our yard
and pulled Diesel off the cord.
Witnesses across the road said
they saw a large staffordshire/
bull mastiff cross dog dragging
my dog up the road, she said.
She said Moorabool Shire compliance officers interviewed a
nearby resident and were able
to recover Diesels body.
Her story was she let her dog
off the chain and put it inside
while she had a shower and
somehow the dog got out of the
house, Ms Constantinou said.
I understand that she gave the
dog up voluntarily and it was
euthanized.
On Wednesday morning she
buried her beloved Diesel at her
mothers property where Diesel
had spent most of his life.
Moorabool Shire officers are investigating the incident further.

Message from the Premier

This week is Fire Action Week,
Victorias annual fire planning and
preparation week.

Right now is the best time to

understand your fire risk and get
prepared, not when a fire starts.

Now is the time to increase your

understanding of the fire risk
where you live, prepare your
property, and decide what youll
do if a fire starts.

What can you do to prepare? Talk

to your family about the fire risk
where you live and make plans for
what youll do on hot, dry, windy
days. Check the Fire Danger
Rating for your area every day and
know which Fire Danger Rating is
your trigger to act. Understand
how to stay informed by accessing
warnings and updates, and know
how to use them.

Last
summer,
firefighters
responded to more than 40,000
incidents, and 4,600 bushfires and
grassfires burned across the state.
This year, the season forecast tells
us that were facing an aboveaverage risk of bushfire and
grassfire.

On hot, dry, windy days, fires can

start and spread quickly. If the Fire

Danger Rating is Code Red,

Extreme or Severe, youre risking
your life if you wait and see.
Leaving late means driving your
family through smoke, fallen trees
and powerlines, and facing the risk
of being trapped or worse.
Leaving early is the safest option
to protect yourself and your
family.

Premier Hon Dr Denis Napthine

This week, CFA brigades around

the state are opening their doors
and getting out and about in their
community to talk about getting
ready for summer. You can check
cfa.vic.gov.au/events for information on whats happening in your
local area.

For more information on how to

get prepared for summer, go to
emergency.vic.gov.au, or ring the
Victorian Bushfire Information
Line on 1800 240 667.
If you have a hearing or speech
impairment, contact the Victorian
Bushfire Information Line (VBIL)
via the National Relay Service on
1800 555 677.
Remember, its up to you to take
responsibility for your safety and
the safety of your family.
This summer, leave and live.
The Hon Dr Denis Napthine MP
Premier of Victoria

Fire Action Week Nov. 16-23

Protect your family by planning ahead this summer.

HOW WERE
HELPING THIS
BUSHFIRE
SEASON

Time to prepare
Labor MP Geoff Howard
has urged residents of fire
prone areas to prepare early
for the fire season.
Geoff Howard was joined
recently
by
Buninyong
Brigade
Captain
Marc
Cannan and fire fighter Ash
Cahir to help clear a local
homestead of excess fuel.
We are unfortunately
all too familiar with the
devastation of bushfire, Mr

Howard said.
Now is the time to clean up
around your property. Mow
regularly, remove excess
ground fuel, and clean the
gutters and downpipes.
It is also a good time to
make sure you and your
family have a bush fire
survival plan that everyone
know about.
The
CFA
Community
Information Guide urges

residents to learn about the

bushfire or grassfire risk and
history in your area, assess
and prepare the capability of
your property to withstand
a fire and to be aware it is
impossible for emergency
services to protect every
individual home or property.
All CFA brigades are calling
on locals and visitors to be
fire aware and have a fire
plan even if you live in town.

At Powercor, we care about keeping you and your property safe from bushres.
Every year we invest millions of dollars in ongoing projects that help
to reduce bushre risk across Victoria.
Whether its checking vegetation near powerlines, installing safety devices
in high-risk areas, or having crews on standby over summer we work
year round to proactively improve your safety.
After much hard work, were proud to say were more prepared than ever
for bushre season.

Powercor is your electricity distributor. We own and maintain the poles, wires, meters
and equipment that deliver electricity to you. Visit our website powercor.com.au

Dear Editor,
The Bacchus Marsh RSL
would like to once again
thank all who were involved
in Remembrance Day commemorations.
Thanks to
the support from local businesses, residents and from

On Remembrance Day our
ceremony was held on the

Dear Editor,
War in our time seems never ending but I thought this
piece written many years
ago summed up how I felt
then and still do today. Lest
we Forget.

HOW DARE THEM!

It was not really until 1981
that the full impact of war
came home to me. It was
the Falklands crisis. Here
was my beautiful Australia
with her Mother Country
at war! I couldnt believe it;
three healthy, beautiful sons
at home, one old enough to
go to war. I really could not
believe it! War happened
to other countries, to other
people, not to me, not to my
boys!
THE FALKLANDS CRISIS
(Written in 1982)
Another year nearly gone
and with it another chapter
of history written. It was a
year of world crisis where
mothers of sons held their
breath in disbelief. A year
where love came home
whipped along by the cold
Atlantic Ocean. It was a year
to take stock of our cosy corners, to re-evaluate and be
thankful for what we found.
Marian Sidwell
Bacchus Marsh

By Kate Taylor
The three Rs are not all that
students are learning about
at Bungaree Primary School
the two Ws are also on the
curriculum.
Willow weaving, a traditional craft of weaving live
willow cutting to form living structures, was taught
to the students by local artist
and Wombat Regional Arts
Network member Sarah
Peckham.
Ms Peckham explained that
she came across willow trees
being removed near the
school and, having recently
learned willow weaving at
a workshop held by Bacchus
Marsh Fibre Artists at Cricket Willow near Daylesford,
decided to teach the students
the art.
Somebody had cut down a
heap of willow just near the
school and I thought it was
too good an opportunity to
miss because Id just done it
with grown-ups.
Bungaree principal Calvin
Tromp explained that this
year the children are exploring the rise of technology
and inventions, and that Ms
Peckham had the children
build a cubby house out of
living willow cuttings.
This is an age-old technique of building structures
that go on to strike root and
thrive.

Sarah and the children

built a cubby out of living
willow during recess and
lunchtimes. The branches
are planted 20 to 30 centimetres into the ground and are
watered by the kids. They
have now sprouted and have
started to grow into a living
cubby.
The children love the project and it is thriving.
We were talking about
how our ancestors made
shelters so we put willows
together to make a cubby,
said Holly. We were really
creative. We have built it
with a window and a door.

Geoff Howard

It shows us how our ancestors made homes when there

was no metal invented yet,
Ella said. It is now growing
leaves and the walls are filling in.
It was a challenge to weave
the willow together, said
Cheyenne. We weaved it together to make this amazing
shelter.
There is a living willow
archway in Germany that
is 50 years old made using
the same idea, and many
structures at Cricket Willow which continue to be reweaved as they grow.

Golden gastronomical plates

THE Plough in Myrniong
and Trentham featured
strongly in last Mondays
2014 Golden Plate Ballaarat
Region and State gala dinner
held at St Annes Winery.
The Plough was highly
commended in the best relaxed dining restaurant and
best local foods categories
and was a finalist for best
customer service, best cellar
local wines and the judges
innovation awards.
Judges said: The Plough
Bistro at Myrniong is a
model of a modern country
pub, looking after its local
community well, and good
enough to be well worth the

drive to get there.

The menu at the Plough
Bistro steers confidently
between the familiar and
the adventurous. The presentation is up-to-date but
not alarmingly trendy, the
judges said.
The dishes at the Plough
were attractively presented
without being fussy. Hearty
dishes included duet of
lamb, confit of duck, free
range pork, 36 hour slow
cooked blade steak, beef and
red wine pie, grilled atlantic
salmon and battered fish
and chips. There was also
a good selection of aged locally sourced steaks.

The Plough at Myrniong

offers a good beer list and a
wonderful wine list, with a
good local range and wines
available by the glass.
The quality of service and
the timing of service at the
Plough was excellent, the
portion sizes generous and
there is good value for money here.

Street view appeal

by Enzo Raimondo
CEO, REIV
First impressions count and
many homebuyers can be
hasty when making up their
minds about a property.
These decisions often start
with property websites
many buyers usually begin
with the online photos, with
the exterior shot usually the
most prominent. The colour
advertisements in local papers and affixed to real estate
agency windows also catch
the attention of buyers. Next

is the drive by: looking at the

homes location, street and
frontage to decide whether it
is worth looking inside.
So if the house lacks kerb
or street appeal, it will not
get past these first bases.
Yet while many sellers work
hard on their homes interior
decluttering, repainting
and creating a magazinestyle presentation they
dont always focus on the
outside.
Before buyers can be convinced of a homes charms
and potential they have to

step over the threshold. A

property that appears attractive and well-maintained
from the outside will lure
more potential buyers to inspect closely what it has to
offer.
Websites, such as realestateview.com.au, and home
renovation shows provide
plenty of tips for enhancing
a home. But the basics to
keep in mind include repairing and painting the gate
and fences, and ensuring
the garden and surrounding
grounds are kept tidy and

well-trimmed.
Additional tasks such as
painting the house and
around the windows, attending to eaves and gutters,
and even repainting a rusted
tin roof can make a real
difference.
Rendering or re-cladding
can give a tired facade an
instant lift, and tuckpointing on older homes can
add detail to an otherwise
uninspiring brick frontage. Other touches such as
restoring wrought iron lacework can provide a striking

focal point.
But before you embark on
an external refurbishment,
you should be confident that
any money spent will be
more than recouped. Your
agent can advise about the
level of investment that
is likely to generate more
buyer interest and result in a
higher sale price.
Often little things can make
the biggest difference and
small improvements to a
homes frontage can give it
instant appeal. For example, paint the front door in a

modern colour or find heritage colours that complement

or match the front fence
and other external features.
Install a new letterbox and
polish any number or name
plaques that are attached to
the house.
It also pays to hide the rubbish and recycling bins to the
back or side of the property.
They are away from sight
there and will not distract
from the ideal street-view
presentation you have created for your home while it
is primed and ready for sale.

Watch for promises

Part II
Last week I outlined parts of
the promises the three major
parties have made leading
up to the state election on
the environment. This week
I continue Promise Watch
from Environment Victoria.
This week we will examine a
little more on Victorias coal
and gas issues before moving onto what the three parties are saying about making
Victorian homes and communities efficient, affordable
and sustainable.
Firstly fossil fuels: The
ALP has not ruled out new
coal mines or coal exports.
Labor has committed to
consulting widely on the
Coal Seam Gas (CSG) moratorium through a 12 month
Parliamentary Inquiry and
making a decision based
on the science if elected,
but has not committed to
permanently extending the

moratorium.
The Coalition government
has been actively working
to create a brown coal export
industry (including the potential for new mines), and
since 2012 has granted $75
million to three brown coal
export trials. The Coalition
has implemented a moratorium on fracking and CSG
and unconventional gas projects, and is currently consulting communities. The
moratorium will be in place
until at least July 2015.
The Greens support a permanent moratorium on coal
seam gas and support a
permanent ban on new coal
mines.
Secondly to make our
homes and communities
efficient, affordable and
sustainable;
Labor is yet to announce
a comprehensive retrofit
program to improve the efficiency of Victorian homes.

Labors Platform has committed to achieving a One

Million Stars goal to increase the star rating of Victorian homes, but there have
not yet been any specific policy announcements. Labors
Platform flags a requirement
for all new dwellings to have
rainwater storage facilities,
but has not provided further
policy details.
The Coalition is yet to announce a comprehensive
retrofit program to improve
the efficiency of Victorian
homes, and failed to deliver
on their 2010 election promise to improve Victorian
homes to a 5 star average.
The Greens support the One
Million Homes campaign
that aims to improve the
standard of 1 million lowincome homes from an average standard of two stars to
five stars, though they are
yet to release detail on how
they would deliver such a

plan.
The Greens support energy efficiency standards
for rental homes and have
introduced legislation into
the current Parliament.
Thirdly, public transport;
on the East West road the
Labors position is complicated. It has stated it would
honour legally binding
contracts but would not
contest action before the
Supreme Court challenging
the validity of the Planning
Ministers approval of the
East-West Link. Labor has
made a series of public transport commitments including
removing 50 level crossings,
24 hour public transport
at the weekend, extension
of the South Morang train
line, a commitment to build
the Melbourne Metro Rail
project and free trams in the
CBD. The funding detail for
many of these commitments
has yet to be released. Labor

has committed to buying 30

new Metro trains and 20 V/
Line carriages at a cost of
up to $900m ($310m in first
budget), favouring locally
based manufacturers.
The Coalition has signed
contracts for the East-West
Link, including a $500 million poison pill compensation clause to contractors if
contracts are subsequently
cancelled. The Coalition
has made a series of public
transport commitments including unfunded plans to
build a Melbourne Rail Link,
upgraded signaling on rail
lines, free CBD trams, plans
to extend the South Morang
train line and unfunded
plans to build an airport rail
link. In 2012, the Coalition
government cancelled funding to install more energy efficient street lights. The Coalition has had a strong urban
water efficiency agenda
through its Living Victoria

program which is supporting stormwater harvesting

and water recycling projects.
The Greens oppose the
East-West Link and have
said they would redirect
some of the money for the
East-West Link to spending on public transport. The
Greens have a range of public transport policies, including increasing V-Line coach
services by 50% and building a Geelong to Bendigo
train line. The Greens have
proposed introducing a 10c
container deposit scheme.
They propose to provide
$12.3 million in incentives to
process scrap metal.
The third and final part,
the protection of Victorias
environment will be covered
next week.
What is your opinion?

of Year BBQ. Thursday 27

Your computer uses Random Access Memory (RAM) to

hold program code and process instructions that you
give your software when computing. When you turn your
computer off, RAM loses the data that was used during
the computing session. When you restart your computer
the data from the operating system and the programs
you start is once again loaded into the computers RAM.
(Although modern RAM still retains small portions of data
as either dynamic DRAM or static SDRAM.)

Avenue
Bowling Club

Results- Round 7
Premier Division
The team travelled to Lara
to take on a top 4 team, and
they had an air of confidence
after promising and consistent performances over the
past few weeks, and the addition to the line-up of former State Singles champion
Brett Dodd.
Lara began best, with two
of Avenues rinks held scoreless early. All rinks worked
hard to reduce the margin
to just 2 shots at the main
break. Lara had the better
start after the break, but Avenue continued to fight and
again reduce the margin to
be right in the hunt with 15
ends remaining.
Unfortunately the home
team were able to kick away
late going on to an 89-69 win.
Glenn Sargents rink managed to salvage an 18-all
draw after being ahead all
day, whilst the martin Shea
(-2), Brett Dodd (-8) and Sam
Shannahan (-10) rinks all
fought hard but on the day
came away empty handed.
Special mention goes to 12
year-old Jarryd Davies for
his performance, showing
undoubted promise and talent in just his second game
in Premier Division.
Avenues Premier team
must continue to fight and
lift in the final 20 ends of a
game to achieve the desired
results.

Division 3
The team hosted Learmonth
who were positioned one
spot lower on the ladder than
Avenue. In what turned out
to be, as expected, a closely
fought game.Avenue were
able to win three of the four
rinks and draw the fourth to
run out winners by six shots.
For Avenue Bill Hawkens
rink kept their excellent seasons record intact securing a
four shot win, whilst Charlie Grants rink returned to
form with a narrow one shot
win with Frank Pomeroys
rink scoring another draw.
The only loss for the day was
new skip Jeff Holloways
rink which went down by
just one shot.
The win keeps Avenue in
top spot and they are scheduled to play second placed
Webbcona next week in
what should be an enthralling top of the table clash.
Final scores Avenue 94 def

Division 5
The players travelled to
Victoria BC on what was a
lightning fast green. Avenue
jumped out to an early lead
with Peter Glass rink, Bob
Delaneys rink and Dave McKendricks rink all playing
well on a difficult green. As
often happens in bowls the
opposition staged a comeback after the tea break,
however the three rinks
recovered to each record
strong wins (Peter Glass up
by 12, Dave McKendrick up
by 9 and Bob Delaney up by
2 at the finish). Stewart Wilsons rink were fairly even
with their opposition early,
however they picked up 15
shots over the last 10 ends to
win by 15 shots.
A great effort by all in gaining a valuable 18 points.
Next week Avenue take on
Linton at home in another
must win game
Final score Avenue 112 def
Victoria 74
Division 8
It was a must win home
game against Daylesford to
stay at the top of the ladder.
Strongly led by Ron Millingtons rink (18 shots up) and
Cherald Sinclairs rink (11
shots up) and veteran Doreen Connell (4 shots up) Avenue were able to secure a 33
shot win, which would have
been more but for the fact
that one rink lost 25 percent
of their score for being one
player short. Nonetheless,
and considering that this
week this Division consisted
of some new bowlers and
fill-ins due to the 21 players
unavailable this week, it was
a great team effort overall.
Additionally to be sitting
atop the ladder is even more
of a credit to the players.
The big test comes this week
when Avenue play second
placed City Oval on grass,
which is 1st against 2nd on the
ladder.
Final score Avenue 113 def
Daylesford 81
In Midweek Pennant Avenues Division 1 scored a
12 shot win over Sebastopol.
For Avenue Doreen Connells rink won by nine shots
and Di Hardiments rink
won by four. Unfortunately
Glenys Kays rink could not
complete the trifecta, going
down by a solitary shot. The
win keeps the side in 4th spot
on the ladder, however only
four points separate 4th place
from 7th place and Avenue
have to tackle ladder leaders central Wendouree next
Monday.
Final scores Avenue 78 def
Sebastopol 66
In Division 2, the players
are still finding the going
tough. With only one win
for the season, Avenue are
battling two other sides to
avoid relegation with the position not made any easier in
having to face third placed
Victoria next Monday. This
weeks loss was by only 14
shots, and Avenue did have
one winning rink.

BACCHUS Marsh Little

Athletics Club is off and running after receiving grants
from the State Government
and the Moorabool Shire.
Last Wednesday the Victorian minister for sport and
recreation, Damian Drum,
visited Bacchus Marsh to
present $21,000 to the local
little athletics club. The money will complement a $10,000
grant from the Moorabool
Shire and $11,000 raised by
the Bacchus Marsh Little
Athletics Club.
Club
president
Maria
Downes said the combined
money would be used to
resurface the javelin run up
area with specialised granular rubber, replace shade
sail construction damaged
during storms a month ago,
and put an extra two lanes of
sprints and straights in the
running track.
She said the club raised an
$11,000 co-contribution by
cleaning up after race days
and running raffles and
other fundraisers.
Its all about the kids as far
as Im concerned. They represent Bacchus Marsh very
well not only at Masons
Lane but also when they
compete across the state,
she said.

Paul (Moorabool Shire

mayor Paul Tatchell) and
Moorabool Shire have been
fantastic and have been
helping us for a while now
to get these grants.
Cr Tatchell said submissions for the State Government grant were made by
council officers when the
minister released a funding
opportunity which required
the Little Athletics Club to
supply 25 per cent of funding towards the project.
Little athletics in Bacchus
Marsh has a hard working
committee, and a massive
following, Cr Tatchell said.
There were over 600 people
at the opening of the season
I attended, and the parents
and friends of little athletics
work like clockwork in running an athletics program at
an incredibly high standard.
Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics would be possibly the
largest regional athletics
club that doesnt have a synthetic track, and based on
the numbers attending its
imperative that we continue
to advocate on behalf of the
club to upgrade the facilities. Minister Damian Drum
and I have had a number of
meetings, and as always Mr
Drum has been very supportive of facility issues in
the Bacchus Marsh region.
Most of the work will be undertaken at the conclusion
of the Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics Clubs current
track and field season, ready
for the 2015/16 season.

morning with all athletes
competing in five events;
sprint, distance, hurdles,

for heavy conditions and
slightly slower times but the
athletes made up for it in

Next weeks competition

Darley Cricket Club

The Senior cricket sides
took on Ballarat/Redan in
one day matches and Senior
Coach Terry Moloney was
quite pleased despite the
mixed bag of results. The
First XI pulled off a spectacular win after losing the
toss and being sent into bat
at Darley Park, and looked
in trouble after losing the
first two wickets for 22, and
the third at 44. Darley were
in need of a solid pairing,
and thats what they got in
Ollie Smith 95 and Ryan Ali
52 who combined for 96 run
fourth wicket stand to get
things back on track. Jake
Wilkie joined Smith for the
fifth wicket to add another
47 runs, and from there
Darley were able to post a
healthy 6/230cc off their 50
overs.
Ballarat/Redan responded
well and Darley made tough
work of it having the visitors
at 1/53 and then 2/149 before
rain interrupted play. Once
the covers were removed, so
was the Combines middle
order, Darley rampaged
through Ballarat/Redan led
by an inspired spell from

off-spinner Sajith Rupasingha 4/35 and Ryan Ali

3/32 to have them at 9/177,
Dave Hoey was faultless
again with the gloves taking
three catches and stumping.
With rain closing in again
and Rupasingha and Ali out
of overs, skipper Matt Cape
chucked the ball to Jake
Wilkie who snared the last
wicket with just four balls
left to play, and Ballarat/Redan 27 runs short at 203.
The Second XI team bowled
first at City Oval, and did
extremely well to bowl out
Ballarat/Redan for just 171
off 39 overs. Rohan Parag
snared three wickets, with
Ben Longhurst and Jason
Spence each taking two,
whilst Zac Ticehurst had a
day of it taking four catches
with the gloves. The seconds
were in a great position to
win at 4/114 off 26 and requiring just over three runs
an over for victory before the
rain halted play.
The Third XI won the toss
and sent Ballarat/Redan in
to bat at Darley Civic Hub.
Two early wickets for 27
runs had the home side on
top, however a third wicket
stand of 53 turned things
around for the visitors, but a
steady flow of wickets led by
young openers Daniel Hynes
3/26 and Dayle Locke 2/36
ensured a Darley fight back
that had the visitors bowled
out for 197 off 39.2. Darley

were in fine form as they begun the run chase, aftera 40

run opening stand, and a 46
run fifth wicket stand Darley would have been confident of victory. However
quick wickets turned things
around for the Combine and
Darley fell painfully close to
be bowled out just six runs
shy of victory with 5.4 overs
to spare.
The Fourth XI won the toss
and elected to bat first at
Alfredton, however a lack
of partnerships to establish some stability cost the
young side as they were
bowled out for 92 off 26.2
overs. Ben Gould was the
standout with 30. Without
a decent tally to defend the
bowlers the team was under
the pump from the start, and
Ballarat/Redan
managed
to pass the target just three
wickets down and with 17
overs to spare. Ben Gould
ensured best on ground
honours with a faultless 1/15
off his (max.) 8 overs, whilst
youngster Tyler Cox again
impressed with 2/45.
** T20 Cricket kicks off with
two senior matches this
Sunday as Darley take on
VRI Delacombe during the
day at Russell Square, and
then travel back to Darley
Civic Hub for a night match
against Moorabool Shire
rivals Ballan at 7:00pm. A
composite junior side between Darley and Ballan

will kick things off in the

early afternoon at Darley
Civic Hub.

Juniors
Under 16 Gold will be able
to attack with the ball this
Saturday after posting an
assertive 9/286 off their 50
overs against Coronet City at
Victoria Park 2.
Under 16 Blue will continue
their match against Ballarat/
Redan/Haddon at Darley
Civic Hub this Saturday .
The Under 14s batted first in
their match against East Ballarat at Progress Park, and
got off to a blinder compiling 172 without loss in their
first 25 overs (split innings
match), whilst East Ballarat
finished the day on 6/55.
Openers in Skipper Jordan
Monaghan 50 ret. no, Blake
Colley 51 ret. no, got things
rolling nicely, whilst Liam
Cornford 28* and Reagan
King 23* are set to continue
on with their starts this Saturday. Hayden Nash again
impressed with the ball
taking 3/8 off three overs,
whilst Noah Simmons 1/8

be looking to inflict more
damage.
