heavy metal bands, Barón Rojo have been part of
the Spanish music scene since 1981—almost thirty
years. Headed by brothers Carlos and Armando de
Castro, Barón Rojo have released thirteen studio
albums, five live albums, and three compilation
albums over the last three decades. And they don’t
plan on stopping.
Barón Rojo’s first album, Larga Vida al Rock and
Roll went gold after its release in 1981, prompting
the band to tour Spain. Afterwards, they transferred
to London to work on the second album, Volumen
Brutal. The album was released in Spanish and
English, which gave the band international success,
especially in Great Britain. After the release of
Obstinato, Barón Rojo’s seventh studio album, the
formation of the band began rapidly changing as
original members left and new musicians joined.
The band are currently made up by the de Castro
brothers, who provide vocals and guitar, Gorka
Alegre, bass, and Rafa Díaz, drums. However, Barón
Rojo’s current tour, which will bring the band to
Madrid on 30 January, will feature original members

The power-metal band, Stratovarius, are
making their way to Madrid. The Finnish
band are set to play at La Riviera on 15
January.
Stratovarius were first formed in 1984
under the name Black Water, but have
since undergone a series of changes;
re-naming themselves Stratovarius,
numerous band members have come and
gone, and their musical style has seen a
transformation.
After a series of financial and legal
problems resulting from the collapse of
their record label, Sanctuary, in 2005,
the band went into seclusion in a Finnish
forest during 2008. The result was the
band’s twelfth album Polaris released this
year. The album is full of powerful, melodic
strong anthems proving that maybe

it didn’t veer too far away
from the foundations laid
down on the debut, advanc-
ing a garage-rock aesthetic,
scattered with melodically
sweet tracks, such as Fluores-
cent Adolescent and Only Ones
Who Know.
Alex Turner’s storytelling
became more abstract but,
combined with the deliv-
ery of his South Yorkshire
vernacular, it was no less
effective, as is proved on the
heart-wrenching album-
closer, 505.
Echoing Mardy Bum and
Fluorescent Adolescent, it’s
a more saccharine affair,
which, brilliant as it is,
doesn’t quite fit in with the
muddier feel of the rest of
Humbug.
Overall the sound of the
album is thicker and more
abrasive than the straight-
up melodies displayed on
Whatever People Say I Am,
That’s What I’m Not. As such,
it requires a few listens to
notice the subtleties but it’s
an album brimming with
ideas and displaying a wider
raft of influences than their
earlier efforts.
Alex Turner, with his band
and side-project, The Last
Shadow Puppets, has been
nothing short of prolific
over the past few years, but
Arctic Monkeys are by no
means a one-man show. They
are a tight live band and
Matt Helders’ drumming, in
particular, is always a treat.
Arctic Monkeys have de-
veloped their sound, adding
depth with every release.
In doing so their music has
become less immediate, with
fewer hooks, but no less
compelling. The direction
they are heading in is un-
likely to recapture the hype
of their debut, but that’s a
prospect they are clearly
not afraid of as they pursue
something altogether more
interesting and exciting.

industrial, gris y
oscura, pero en mi
primera visita, me
pareció un lugar ideal
para hacer turismo
durante un par de días, aunque
tengo que reconocer que nada más
llegar tuve la sensación de estar
en Alemania más que en Italia.
Todas mis visitas al “País de la
Pasta” habían trascurrido por el

Lo primero que me recomendaron

New Year’s Resolution to travel more? Well-travelled Ryan Craggs
compiles a must-see destination list in southern Europe for 2010.

Portugal
Portugal has so much to offer. When
the time comes to plan a beach jaunt,
The Algarve isn’t the first place to come
to mind—but it should be. It boasts the
warmest weather in continental Europe,
holding steady between 15 degrees in
winter and 31 degrees in summer and
the main cities to note include Lagos,
Faro, Silves, and Sagres. These quaint
towns are a perfect getaway from the
big-city life and offer relaxation at every
turn.
If you’re spending enough time in
Madrid, you have no business missing
out on Lisbon. Something like Madrid’s
chilled-out, younger brother, the city has
enough culture and nightlife to keep a
traveller busy for at least a few days. The

trips for
labyrinth-like Alfama district holds the
Castelo de São Jorge, offering beautiful
vistas of the Portuguese landscape. The
downtown area, known as Baixa, makes
for a great walking tour and features
Santa Justa’s Elevator. In the Belém area,
you’ll find the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos,
a monastery dating back to 1496, the
Museu do Design, and the Presidential
Palace, and the enormous statue to
Alfonso de Albuquerque. And if you’re
not in the mood for reading up on sights
and having any idea what it is you’re
looking at—well, just take in the parks
and the river. And all this goes without
mentioning the casas de fado or the
nightlife in Bairro Alto.

Milan
Milan is all about the look. Whether
you’re talking about the fashion industry
heavy-hitters, Giorgio Armani, Dolce &
Gabbana, Gucci, Prada, and Versace in
the fashion quadrangle, or the art history
the city contains, there’s no denying
the central importance of appearance
in Milan. Nothing gets more high-end
or posh than the clothing and exotic
accessories you’ll encounter in Milan,
and window-shopping is something like
a stroll through an art gallery.
Aside from the highest-end stores, areas
such as Vercelli Avenue, Buenos Aires
Avenue, and Porta Ticinese may prove a
lot easier on your wallet, in conjunction
with street markets one finds in the city.
Milan is also home to two of Italy’s most
successful football clubs: Internazionale
and AC Milan. Both call Stadio San Siro
home, and 85,000 crazed fans regularly
fill the stadium. With a rich tradition and
a history of winning, any trip to the city
should be punctuated by a football match
if the timing is right.
And for something of a little greater
substance, head to the Cenacolo Vinciano,
where you can see da Vinci’s masterpiece,
“The Last Supper.” That way, you can say
you went to the city for something other
than shopping.
Valencia
Valencia is all about the Bs—breezes,
beaches, and paella. Alright, so maybe
that’s a P, but it doesn’t make the city
any less appealing. Spring is the best
time to visit, and remains most popular,

especially during Las Fallas. This
celebration in praise of Saint Joseph
occurs each year on 15-18 March — of
course, it requires an article all its own
to describe — but just know that if
you like fireworks, parades, floats, and
partying, you need to get to Valencia for
Las Fallas.
Outside the celebration, the Mercado
Central bursts with colours and smells
in the form of food. Famed architect
Santiago Calatrava produced the Ciutat
de les Arts i les Ciències, a futuristic-
looking structure that contains a
performing arts centre, a science
museum, an IMAX theatre, and the
L'Oceanogràfic, the largest aquarium
in Europe. For those more interested
in a walk in the park, the former Turia
River has been diverted and the riverbed
converted into a park filled with gardens,
playgrounds, fountains, and sport areas,
making for a relaxing place to breathe in
the coastal air.
And lastly, the paella—to get the best
paella, grab a friend, since it’s typically
served for two, and head for the
Malvarosa beach to check out nearby
eateries. There, you can scarf down some
wonderful variation of rice, chicken,
rabbit, fish and seafood. It’s like a parade
in your mouth.

Rome
Rome is simply a sightseers dream. The
ancient city oozes memorable scenes for
any traveller’s mind’s eye—blood-soaked
gladiatorial battles, countless people
scooting around on Vespas, and Caligula
himself playing the fiddle as Rome
burned. Condensing it all into a few days
is by far the most difficult part of any
visit to Rome.
The best place to start out any itinerary
is in the ancient ruins. Here you’ll find
the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and
Palatine Hill. Not too far from Palatine
Hill, visitors can also trek out to the
Circus Maximus. These landmarks
were the gathering places of all of
Rome’s functions — gladatorial games,
government meetings, worship, and all
forms of mass entertainment.
The Pantheon proves another must-
see site. This temple has been around
so long, it now sits nearly 10 metres
below street level due to settling debris.
For those looking for a more social
scene, check out the Spanish Steps in
Piazza di Spagnia. Built by the French
but named after the Spanish embassy
to the Holy See, these steps provide a
terrific photo opportunity, and a stroll
down Via Condotti will take travellers to
some of the highest-of-high end fashion
shopping.
And of course, Vatican City is a day trip
all within itself—and all within Rome.
Here you’ll find St. Peter’s Basilica,
Piazza di San Pietro, and the fantastic
Vatican museums; the Sistine Chapel
is required viewing for any person,
religious or not.
Tangier
Full of exotic flavours and other-worldly
sights, Tangier has attracted the likes
of Matisse, Kerouac, the Rolling Stones,
and slews of millionaire playboys. When
it comes to expectations, this place
always seems to defy, and eclectic is
probably the best way to describe it.
Once ruled by Spain, and later by France,
the city fell under joint rule of France,
Spain, Britain, and Italy. Everybody
wanted in on the action.
As far as the layout, the city has two
parts: the Medina, or old town, and
Ville Nouvelle. Inside the labyrinthine
Medina, wanderers will find the Kasbah
with its souks full of wares, foods, and
clothes for sale. This should be the crux
of any journey to Morocco. Everything
is negotiable, and haggling is practically

the Moroccan national pastime.
Everything is cheap, so long as you want
it to be, in Tangier.
Outside the Medina, the most important
sights of note are the beach, Avenue
Mohammed VI and the main squares of
Grand Socco, Petit Socco, and Place de
France. Here you can sip on Morocco’s
national drink, thé à la menthe, a green
tea with copious amounts of mint and
sugar. And beyond the city itself, check
out the Caves of Hercules. Legend has
it that Hercules once inhabited the area,
and the sea has carved out a silhouette
of Africa in one cave. If nothing else, a
taxi ride is worth it for a breathtaking
view of the coastline.

Salamanca
Not too far from Madrid lies the quaint
city of Salamanca. Known as a town of
students and the home of the purest
form of Castilian Spanish, Salamanca
has oodles of charm and beauty to offer
any visitor. Nicknamed La Dorada,
the golden city, after the golden hue
its sandstone buildings take during
sunset, Salamanca is considered one
of the most picturesque Renaissance
cities in all of Europe. To that end,
most of the city can be seen on foot—
always the best way to completely
see a place. As with most any Spanish
city, the Plaza Mayor is the main drag
where most people tend to meet up.
Here you’ll find restaurants, bars, and

just general people watching.
Salamanca actually has two cathedrals
worth visiting: la Catedral Vieja, and la
Catedral Nueva. Luckily, they’re built
next to one another. The university is
also worth visiting while in Salamanca
— and perhaps it’s even worth taking a
class. As previously mentioned, many
a student has learned their Castilian
here, and it’s the oldest centre for
travel
study of the language in the country.
And look no further than a student
to tell you all the best bars to try
out—though chances are, they’ll be
partaking in a botellón first. And as the
saying goes, when in Rome…

CAdiz
As the oldest city in all of Iberia, Cádiz
has a lot going for it. Home of the
Spanish Navy and capital of the Cádiz
province, this city contains all the
warmth, beauty, and culture one would
expect from the coasts of Andalusia.
But more than anything, Cádiz boasts
its famous celebration of Carnaval (yes,
that does mean Carnival).
The Carnaval in Cádiz is widely
recognized as the best in Spain, and
the third largest in the entire world.
This celebration running up till Ash
Wednesday features all varieties of

could imagine. Particular to Cádiz,
groups of performers including
chirigotas, cuartetos, coros, comparsas
and romanceros put on shows in some
form of song, dance, or acting. Most of
the shows are performed with a good
sense of humour, something locals are
known for, and they make for a great
form of entertainment for you and your
partying friends.
Cádiz also sets up for the best sunsets
in Spain, any time of year. Its location
on the Atlantic provides ample
opportunity to enjoy the beach and
all sorts of water-based activities,
including surfing. In the warmer
seasons, the beach also might prove to
be a good place to crash after a crazy
night of Carnaval partying—but just be
sure to stay safe if that’s the case. Even
so, Carnaval in Cádiz is not to be
missed.
Verona
Verona, Verona, wherefore art
thou? Without going into too much
Shakespearean sight-reading, Verona
simply is a smaller city with enough
things to do to make it worth a visit.
Plus, it’s the setting of Romeo and
Juliet. How cool is that?
As far as things to see and do in
Verona, starting with the Roman
ruins is always a good way to go. As
a town dating to Roman antiquity,
Verona offers its visitors the remains
of the Arena, the third-largest Roman
amphitheatre still in existence. Most
of the other sites are from the last
800 years, however, and a smattering
includes the Castle Scaligeri and
the Castelvecchio, where the city art
museum can be found. Both are fairly
impressive castles and when combined
with the cathedral, offer a look into the
city’s past.

the Casa di Giulietta, or Juliet’s
House. The claim is that this is
where Juliet performed her famous
speech to her star-crossed lover.
While the house is very old, it
wasn’t until 1936 that the balcony
was added in order to attract
tourists. Many leave messages
or trinkets for the statue of Juliet,
hoping to improve their fortunes in
the realm of love. Nevertheless, it’s
mostly a tourist site, whereas many
others around the city have true
history to them. In any case, you
can’t go wrong taking a leisurely
stroll about town, and best of all,
doing so while enjoying a gelato.

Venice
While Rome may be all about
the sites, Venice is all about the
city. As the only pedestrian city
in the world, Venice stands apart
with its lack of automobiles and
plethora of waterways. The cliché
is to think of the gondolas and
some accordion music playing for
a couple in love, but the reality is
that other ways of getting around
exist. Expect to pay upwards of
75€ minimum for a gondola ride,
though for the sake of experience,
it may be worth the price.
Due to its nature as a lagoon and a
romantic thought in most minds,
Venice’s inhabitants are nearly
all tourists and people serving
those visitors. The nightlife isn’t
especially exciting, but most come
to the city to eat, take in the sites,
and for the rich cultural history.
Try to avoid the acqua alta, or high
water, when the lagoon floods
many streets. But even if the water
level rises, it shouldn’t prevent

churches and museums, including
Saint Mark's Basilica, the Correr
Museum and the Doge’s Palace.
This is a city unlike any other, and
it should be obvious from the first
step — or perhaps stroke of an oar.

Ibiza
If there’s one word of Spanish
that most any traveller can
translate beyond “hola,” this is it:
Ibiza=party. Plain and simple. If
you read about celebrities who
party a lot (no mention of Lindsay
or Paris), chances are they’ve been
here. That’s not always a ringing
endorsement, but in this case, just
know that if you’re into clubs at
all in Madrid, then Ibiza is just
about the most fun you could ever
imagine.
During the day, most tourists will
be sleeping off the previous night’s
hangover out in the sandy paradise
of the Balearic Islands. And then,
somewhere around 7 p.m., things
start to liven up. Ibiza is known
most famously for its nightclubs;
some of the more famous ones
include Privilege, Space, Pacha,
Eden, Amnesia, and El Divino. Hot
spots such as these will require a
significant entrance in most cases
(think 30 to 50€) and drinks won’t
come cheap either. Still, if you’ve
got the dough to drop, then these
are the discos for you. And after
all, why would you come to Ibiza
in the first place? You’re here to
drink, dance, and maybe see a
celebrity or two. If you stay sober
enough to remember, chances are,
you will.

If you’re already
thinking ‘no’, then
leave this one well alone.
But if you think a Victorian-era James
Bond mixed with Batman and Robin
sounds ok, give it a whirl. In this
interpretation, Holmes must prevent
satanic cult leader Lord Blackwood as
he rises from the dead from executing
his devilish plan to take over the world.
Downey’s Holmes is not only rougher
around the edges but rougher right
through, as happy skelping ruffians
with his bare knuckles as solving
mysteries. The edge is taken of this
by camping up his relationship with
Kevin Spacey, Jeff Bridges, Ewan
McGregor and George Clooney (taking
a break from his full time job selling
coffee) are a promising cast for any
movie. However, the film has garnered a
mixture of positive and critical reviews,
with some accusing fingers pointing at
the directing and scriptwriting. Some
of the criticism towards Grant Heslov’s
directing seems a frustration due to
expecting a more ‘Coen Brothers’ style.
Heslov’s production company partner
Clooney does perhaps come close in
the hamming-up stakes to his role as
Everett in the Coen Brothers’ O Brother,
Where Art Thou? and his performance
is undeniably excellent. I was happy
with the other three co-stars, but if
you expect Jeff Bridges to be The Dude
from The Big Lebowski, Kevin Spacey
to produce some American Beauty or
Ewan McGregor to be anything but the
straight man, you’ll be disappointed.
There are two ways of enjoying it: realize
it actually isn’t all true and isn’t especially
clever, or light up a spliff. If you want to
learn something about psychic warfare,
watch a documentary.
Dr Watson with bags of bromantic
banter. The casting of Jude Law as
Holmes’ sidekick also raises eyebrows,
but it was Ritchie’s intention to sex
up the character. “I wanted a good-
looking Watson. I didn’t want him to
be subservient or inferior, but rather a
bit of a hero with an equal partnership
with Holmes. I believe that’s to a
degree what Conan Doyle was really
after” the director states. Personally,
I thought Watson was meant to be
an everyman who acted as a foil to
Sherlock Holmes’ genius; a device for
Conan Doyle to narrate and show off
Holmes’ intellectual superiority as well
as a companion. Still, Law brings a
little more substance to the character
than Watsons have had in previous
screen adaptations.
There’s a nice and dirty Victorian
London, a good soundtrack and plenty
of action for those who like it, but it’s
not for fans of Conan Doyle’s work.

Daddy, why do we
follow Atleti?
Haven’t picked a Spanish football team to follow yet? If not, that’s a resolution for 2010 for you.
Garreth Nunn tells how he became an Atlético Madrid supporter.
T
he young boy sitting in the
back of the car looks up and
says “Papá”, thinks and then
says “Papá, ¿por qué somos del
Atleti?” His father in the front
turns to answer him but suddenly realizes
that he doesn’t have an answer. The boy’s
question of “Daddy, why do we follow
Atleti?” has become one of the most
famous advertisements in Spain. It is a
question that Atlético de Madrid (Atleti)
supporters ask themselves. Most of life’s
big decisions require serious thinking,
a weighing up of the pros and cons to
try to pick the best option. So why is
choosing a football team different? The
picking of a football is a decision that
shouldn’t be made lightly. Some people
have the decision made for them before
they are already born. Place of birth, a
parent’s favourite team or even religion
and you are christened with that club for
life.
What?
Well the question really is, what is the
point of following a Spanish team when
you already have one? Well, why not?
It is a great opportunity to get into the
Spanish mind. Football is more than just
a sport for millions of people and the
Spanish are no exception. Take a look the
next time you are on the metro or a bus.
It doesn’t matter which city, look around
and observe what newspapers are being
read. I will make a guess, AS or Marca:
sports papers that deal mainly in football.
Following a Spanish team gives you an
opening into conversation and can lead
to very good friendships. It gives you a
chance to be part of a group, a chance
to belong to something. Yet, I have other
reasons. I come from the southeast of
Ireland. I came to Spain being able to
count on my fingers the amount of games

I had attended. Professional football is
relatively new in Ireland, the standard is
well below Spain, and so, when I came to
Madrid six years ago for the first time, I
was spoilt for choice. There were three
teams in the top division of the national
league. A national league that was
broadcast across the world; a national
league that had the likes of Ronaldo (the
Brazilian), Ronaldinho, Beckham, Zidane
etc. Regardless of what team you support
would any football fan in their right mind
pass up the opportunity to watch these
players. However, what club to follow?
There were three clubs in the top flight
(Real, Atleti and Getafe). So, the next
questions.
Why and How?
Why Atlético and not Real? Why support
the least successful team, the team
who had one superstar? Like the father
in the advert, I have no simple answer.

towards the underdog and Atleti are the
underdogs of Madrid. They have been
completely overshadowed by Real Madrid.
Did I want to join the bandwagon and
support Real or be more original? I came
to Madrid for the first time six years ago
to visit my girlfriend. Being in Madrid, I
had the opportunity to see some decent
football. Atleti were the only team playing
at home. They were playing Valencia
and, if the truth be known, I knew more
of the Valencia players. That night in
the Vicente Calderon, there was passion,
loyalty and true fans. Atleti lost 0-3 but
the fans sang their hearts out and, like a
fish, I was hooked. I went back to Ireland
and followed Atleti on Sky Sports and
then a year later I came to live in Madrid.
I attended the odd game and watched
the away matches on TV. I also gave Real
Madrid a chance. Why not? The problem
was the Santiago Bernabeu lacked all
of what the Calderon had. There was
no heart, no passion and no soul. So,
I chose Atleti. Sitting there for my first
game with Atleti losing 0-3 listening to
40,000 people singing how much they
loved the team was not something I
could ignore.

a Name
Let’s face it, what we’re not supposed to laugh at only gets
funnier, and this one goes out to every English speaker in Spain to
choke back the chuckles at comical names. We asked Helen Macrae
to indulge the back of the classroom part of our funny bone while
we went to slurp some Dyc and spread some Bimbo.
I
n my mind, the day I arrived
in Madrid has been condensed
down into four vivid images. The
unexpected brightness as I stepped
off the plane, far stronger than the
feeble sunshine that occasionally trickles
through the clouds in the UK, despite the
fact it was only January and the middle
of a cold Madrileño winter. The friendly
official who waved me through with a
bienvenido a España and barely a glance
at my passport (unlike in England where,
bizarrely, they thought it necessary to
quiz me for ten minutes about why I
was leaving my home country). The
baggage reclaim hall with its heady
mixture of aromas: foreign cleaning
products, cigarette smoke and the smell
of anticipation. And finally, the large
green sign which loomed to my right
as I turned out of Arrivals and headed
towards the exit, which simply read
“Arse Cafeteria”.
Well, it turns out my memory isn’t quite
as sharp as I’d thought and it’s actually
spelt “Ars”, but E or no E, to any Brit
it looks and sounds distinctly like an
establishment named after someone’s
bottom. I’m happy to report that
the linguistic adventure has since
continued and that there are plenty
of names in Spain that cause much
mirth and sniggering-into-your-
sleeve amongst English speakers,
while bemused Spaniards stand
around wondering what the joke
is. Here’s a roundup of the best…
Brand names
Bimbo Bread
Slice of Bimbo anyone? This
classic has been making us
chuckle for years, as we mentally
picture taking a meat cleaver
to Britney Spears, Paris Hilton
or some other MTV airhead. In
reality, this is nice soft bread

perfect for sandwiches or making toast,
provided you can get your grubby paws
on a toaster of course. The company has
been around for about 50 years and now
also makes cakes, pastries and savoury
snacks, so you can have your Bimbo any
way you want.
Bonka Coffee
For the perfect start to your day, you
need a Bonka with your Bimbo (I know
this shouldn’t make me laugh, but it
does). Made by Nestlé, this coffee comes
in a whole host of varieties, from the
intense flavour of Bonka Natural to Bonka
Espresso for those who are just after a
quickie. Coffee for consenting adults only!
Hornimans Tea
If you’re not a fan of the
java then perhaps you’d
prefer a Hornimans to
go with your breakfast. I recently found
out that this was originally an English
company founded in 1826 by a fellow
called John Horniman: tea importer
extraordinaire and serial womaniser
(actually I just made that last bit up but I
hope it’s true). I don’t know if his tea
does what it promises on the packet,
but with so many different flavours I’m
sure there’s one that’ll get you feeling
fruity.
Dyc Whisky
Oh-ho and you thought we were
done with sexual innuendo! If you
go looking for Dyc in a Spanish
bar then this is what you’ll get.
Dyc (pronounced “deek”) is a
Scotch-style whisky, very popular
amongst twenty-something
Spaniards and often teamed with
Coca-Cola (so that’d be a Dyc and
coke then). Even more amusingly,
it’s asked for as “Whisky Dyc”,
which in British slang is a term
used to refer to alcohol-induced
impotence. Nice!
Dry Sack Sherry
Another one that made me giggle. You’re
probably fed up with my juvenile humour
now though, so I’ll say no more.
Place names
Sober (Galicia)
After all that alcohol perhaps you ought
to make your way to Sober, a small
municipality in the province of Lugo in
Galicia. I’ve never visited the place, but if
it lives up to its name then you’re probably
best off giving it a miss, as it doesn’t
sound like the most thrilling day out.
Poo (Asturias)
Now I know even the most serious
amongst you will crack a smile at this one.
Don’t try and pretend you’re not, I can see
you sniggering into your coat sleeves! If
you want to go to Poo then you’ll have
to head up to Llanes in Asturias. Again,
somewhere I hope is nicer than it sounds.
Piles (Valencia)
To quote Wikipedia: “The beautiful scenery
of Piles has made it a common tourist
destination with people coming from all
over Spain to look at Piles.” Is it me or
does that sound a little tongue-in-cheek?
Likewise, the sign for this Valencian
coastal town is probably photographed to
death by British tourists. Ah, we do love
our toilet humour.
Tossa de Mar (Catalunya)
Make that toilet humour AND smut. Tee hee…
People’s names
On the whole I find Spanish names a
lot prettier-sounding than their English
counterparts, but there a few that make
me giggle. I’ve been here long enough to
have stopped singing Abba every time I
meet someone called Fernando, but I still
have problems with Fanny, Adolfo and
Jesús. I once had a student named the
latter who tried to chat me up, so now I
can proudly say that not only did Jesus
die for my sins, but he also asked me out
to the cinema. Variations on this theme
(Jesús María, María Jesús, José María,
María José etc) I’m sure exist purely to
confuse English speakers.
Establishments
Smell
As well as Ars, there exists in Madrid a
linguistic treat in the form of a pharmacy
called Smell. I’m not sure if it’s a chain
as I’ve only seen the one on C/Argumosa
located in my beloved barrio of Lavapiés.
Interestingly, it doesn’t really smell of
anything inside (except for soap perhaps).
Sala Wind
This club in Plaza del Carmen has been
a long-term player in the Madrid party
scene, banging out anything from electro-
house to indie. It also provides English
speakers with yet another excuse to
snicker and wonder whether the patrons
have been eating too many cabbages and
baked beans. Parp!
Bill Murray Bar
Discovered mid pub-crawl
on a drunken night out,
the name of this bar is
humorous when you’re
sober and absolute genius
when you’re hammered. As far as I can
tell, it’s not affiliated with Mr. Murray
himself. In fact, it doesn’t seem to have
anything to do with him apart from the
name. I think it’s on C/Covarrubias in
Chamberí, although I’m not 100% sure
(let’s just say we were all definitely a
little worse for wear when we found it).
Next time you’re in the area go order a
Dyc and coke there, and have a snigger
on me!

Go and live the experience, it is
much more than water; in fact their
motto, since they inaugurated their
first venue in Granada, has been

I have been lucky enough to visit
all of the Al-Andalus hammams.
Of the three, the one in Granada is
without a doubt my favourite. The
baths are located near the Moorish-
looking church of Santa Ana,
behind the Plaza Nueva on a street
barely wide enough for a car. This
particular part of Granada felt as
exotically Moorish as The Arabian
Nights, at the foot of the hillside
that holds the Alhambra palace and
facing the old Moorish residential
quarter of the Albaicín across the
narrow Darro Valley.
The Cordoba baths are located in
the city’s historical centre, the
Judería, and its Moorish-arch-lined
interior makes you feel like you’re
bathing in a large vault somewhere
inside Cordoba’s Great Mosque.
You can enjoy a dip in history
while you delight in relaxation in
the three water chambers and the
steam room. Bathing sessions can
be complemented by massages that

Without being surrounded by
Moorish architecture, the Madrid
hammam is bigger with a wider
range of services to offer. Its
central location, less than five
minutes’ walk from Sol, belies

tea, infusions and a fine selection
of Moorish cakes at the tearoom.
For those of you who want to
immerse in the culture, there
is a chance of enjoying dinner
at the restaurant next door. The
fusion of the three cultures
- Christian, Arab and Jewish -
makes for a delicious mixture of
culinary tastes from all over the
Iberian Peninsula. The evening
atmosphere is complemented by
a variety of dance displays: belly
dancing, sabre dancing, darbuka…
Don’t think twice about it, treat
yourself and someone special to
an experience you won’t forget.
You might not look at your

affection anymore, though.

Charlotte Smith claims her top reading
recommendation for the New Year is not only
brutally hilarious but could also make us a little
more honest.
his debut novel brings us a
fresh, if slightly eccentric,
new philosophy on life. And
isn’t that what we all want
for the New Year as it lays its blank
pages bare for us to do with what
we will? (And of course we will, we
always do!)
Used intelligently, the book could
offer a new perspective on how to
live our lives with more integrity
and honesty in 2010. As the author
reminds us throughout his epic first
opus, staying true to ourselves is
important, yet we are all constantly
seduced, polluted and influenced
by the world in which we live. It all
ultimately begs the question that
Toltz asks more than once – can we
ever really know ourselves?
I read a lot of books in 2009 and I
thought it only appropriate that I
should share the best of the bunch
with you. That’s not to say that I
didn’t read other credible books, but
this is the one that stole my heart
and mind for its unashamed honesty
and intelligence.
Steven Toltz’s protagonist is the
bleakly comic Martin Dean, who is
only ever portrayed as the brother of
Terry and the father of Jasper, who
is only ever the son of Martin. The
book doesn’t so much have a plot as
an unravelling chain of catastrophic
consequences, compounded rather
than halted by the characters’ good
intentions.
Days after an eight-year-old Martin
awakes from a four year coma with
a perfect memory of every word
spoken while he was comatose. And
minutes before his brother Terry’s
dreams of being a world class
sporting hero are shattered, Martin
explains his utter dissatisfaction
with the world at a children’s

birthday party as he gives us his
slant on the real significance of
‘musical chairs’.
“The game is an analogy for life:
there are not enough chairs or good
times to go around, not enough food,
not enough joy, nor beds nor jobs nor

yet the music goes on.”
Set in Australia, A Fraction of the
Whole skips from anecdote to rant
to reflection with hysteria and ease
enticing the reader into a world of
bizarrely realistic possibilities and
happenings. From his prison cell,
Jasper Dean writes the story of
his family’s life. He wants us, the
audience, to know the truth about
his recently dead father, Martin (the
most hated man in Australia) and his
uncle Terry (the most loved man in
Australia).
The reader is taken from “the Least
Desirable Place to Live in New
South Wales” – a slogan for the
prison town where the Dean brothers
start their lives to, (in no particular
order) a crazy business venture at a
Sydney strip club, a Thai jungle self-
awakening between father and son,
a lifelong nervous breakdown which
finishes up in a mental institution, a
depressing Parisian flat and a people
smugglers’ boat drifting in the pacific.
Not to mention Martin’s ingenious
lottery scheme to make everyone
in Australia a millionaire, a town
hall suggestion box which leads to
disaster for the entire community, a
career criminal who attempts to form
a democratic cooperative of crime
and Jasper’s love for a woman who
catches her tears in a jar so that her
former lover can drink them. – Here
he describes his first love perfectly.
“I couldn’t think of anything other
than her and the components of her.
For example, her red hair. But was I so
primitive that I let myself be bewitched
by hair? I mean, really. Hair! It’s just
hair! Everyone has it! She puts it up, she
lets it down. So what? And why did all
the other parts of her have me wheezing
Australian with delight? I mean, who hasn’t got a
back, or a belly, or armpits? This whole

staying true to oneself. The style is
oneself. confident, inspired and knowing as it
breezes from one calamity to another.
This combination is its ultimate
success. I’ll leave you with these wise
words as I can’t put it any better than
this grand debut novelist.
“That’s how we slide, and while we
slide we blame the world’s problems on
colonialism, imperialism, capitalism,
corporatism, stupid white men, and
America, but there’s no need to make a
brand name of blame. Individual self-
interest: that’s the source of our descent,
and it doesn’t start in the boardrooms
or the war rooms either. It starts in the
home.”

New Year’s
Resolutions
Have you got your resolutions settled for the New Year yet? Matt
Johnson articulates a whole bunch of them for you to get the best
out of living in Madrid in 2010.
009. What can I say?
Hell of a year. Another
365 days of havoc
wreaking, language

slurping. A year, out
of my other 24, to
rewind. If anything,
in ’09 I came to learn that life – that
short, sweet, twinkling moment we
get to spend on this spinning sphere
– should, like a good wine, just get
better with time. So, with the issuing
in of a new decade, what can we do to
bust full speed out of the gates? Will
it be possible to get 2010 out of ’09’s
menacing shadow? Is there in fact any
hope? Well, there are no guarantees, but
with brimming optimism and a little
organization, we can at least be certain
that 2010 will be chock full of possibility
and adventure.
For starters, let’s take a quick
step outside the box’s border and
try something a little different.
Skateboarding. Imagine standing
under the shadow of the skyscrapers in
Plaza Castilla, staring down that vast
stretch of downward sloping Paseo
de la Castellana, wind at your back, as
you begin rolling effortlessly toward
Cibeles – statues, monuments, and office
towers whizzing by. Think about that
class or friend’s flat that’s just outside
reasonable walking distance but is,
coincidentally, a straight shot downhill
from Bravo Murillo to Plaza de España.
And what about in-line? A Sunday
afternoon lapping around Retiro, while
good for the body, would also be a great
booster for the self-esteem. Why, you
ask? Well, picture a pedestrian highway

fact, failed to learn the language I’d set
out to. So go to intercambios. Pick a cafe
in your barrio and befriend the barmen.
Strike up a convo with the lady in line at
the store. Hit up cinetube.es and watch
all your favourite movies in Spanish in
your spare time. Language learning will

Up next? Fiesta time! Spring brings with
it more than sunburns and sidewalk
seating. From the costumed craziness
of Carnaval in Cadiz (February), to the
fireworks and flaming statues of Las
Fallas in Valencia (March), arrange your
travelling around these unique events
and you’ll be looking back on 2010
with party experiences you may not
remember but will most definitely never
forget. You can sip white wine during
La feria de Sevilla while dancing some
flamenco with throngs of traditionally
clad Spaniards in April; rage your face
off in the best clubs on earth during
Ibiza’s opening weekend in May;
party on the beach and welcome in
the summer at La noche de San Juan in
Barcelona (June); get chased by bulls at
San Fermín in Pamplona in July; or throw
out your arm with some tomato tossing
at La Tomatina in Buñol (August). And
don’t forget that these are only the most
famous of fiestas. There are literally
hundreds more of some similar sort in
every pueblo across the map.
Anyone up for a road trip? Let’s face
it – after so many bumpy bus rides and
hours at train stations and airports,
you’re going to start burning out. So
let’s take it into our own hands then,
shall we? Rent a car. Road tripping is
an adventure many a foreigner never
experiences, and not only does it
free you up from stressful departure
schedules, it affords you the opportunity
to explore small towns in the comfort of
your own car and see places that can’t
be easily accessed by public transport.
Most guiris here on their semesterly
sabbaticals fail to sink their teeth into
all the cultural richness that small town
Spain has to offer or miss out on the
green grass, rolling hills, and world
famous gastronomy of the north. Hitting
the road on your own is not only the
perfect mode in which to tick this off the
old Iberian to-do list, but it will allow for
the always unforeseen adventures that
arise when you step out your front door
and try something different. Don’t forget
to buckle up!
Finally, don’t let yourself fall into a
rut. Madrid, and not just the city but
La Tomatina the province, has so much to offer

its borders isn’t even enough to

neighbourhoods on the weekends. Get
lost. Wander. Sample as many foods as

A Spanish woman has not had such a big impact on the world since Queen Isabel made a
rather good call in sponsoring a guy called Columbus in 1492. Ryan Craggs explains how the
Alcobendas girl next door became the most famous actress her country has ever produced.
A
ny resident of the Iberian
Peninsula can attest to the
omnipresence of Penélope
Cruz—try passing an en-
tire day without having the
starlet show up on the television, news-
paper, or an advertisement on the way to
work. Whether in Mango ads or gossip
magazines, her striking figure and wry,
there’s-something-I’m-not-telling smile
have captivated fans for nearly a decade.
Her former beau, Tom Cruise, introduced
the Spanish enchantress to the rest of
the world, but audiences in her native
land have known her for much longer.
She is no fly-by-night sensation. And
yet, hers is a life marked by dichotomies:
acting awards and negative reviews, and
indifference to her looks in Spain while
being ranked among the world’s most
beautiful people. Some may be quick to
dismiss her based on looks, but to do so
is to deny the true depth of the actress
who calls Madrid home.
Though known as a leading lady of
cinema, and an Academy Award winner
at that, Cruz started her career in the
erotic French television programme Série
Rose. Her first flirtation with fame came in
the music video for the song La fuerza del
destino by rock group Mecano. The sexual
gravity she exerted throughout the video
pulled in more than just the audience—it
led to her dating Nacho Cano, the song’s
writer and a rock star in his own right.
True stardom came in Cruz’s first
significant role as an actress. In her turn
as Silvia in the film Jamón, jamón, Cruz
starred alongside Jordi Mollà and Javier
Bardem. The film explores complex
romantic relationships through distinctly
Spanish motifs—most notably, foodstuff
from which the film draws its title. Just
at the start of these burgeoning careers,
Jamón, jamón stars two future Academy
Award winning actors—Cruz and her
current boyfriend, Javier Bardem—and
received much critical acclaim.
Already recognized as a talented
actress, Cruz took little time to gain more
positive momentum. Belle Époque, her
second film, won the Academy Award
for Best Foreign Language Film. This
picture tells the story of a soldier falling
in love with each of the four sisters in
a family, one by one. Set just before the
Spanish Civil War, Belle Époque captured
the feminine spirit in each sister. Cruz,
playing Luz, represented naïveté, though
the actress in real life was anything but.
Throughout the mid-90s, Cruz kept
busy with steady work. Roles such as
Patricia in the film Brujas continued to
show how the young actress was more
than just a pretty face. This led to her
first collaboration with Pedro Almodó-
celebrileños

in Carne trémula. This, of course, was
just the beginning of their professional
relationship—one spanning a number
of films and awards.
Cruz’s big break as a star came in
Alejandro Amenábar’s Abre los ojos,
a film exploring the fickle nature of
love and reality. She then returned
Jamón, jamón to Almodóvar in 1999’s Todo sobre mi
madre and firmly cemented her status
as the queen of Spanish cinema when
the film won the Academy Award for
Best Foreign Language Film. It marked
the second time a movie in which Cruz
starred won the award, and allowed her
to move into American cinema.
In 2000, Cruz starred alongside Matt
Abre los ojos
Damon in All the Pretty Horses. Soon
thereafter she starred in the Abre los ojos
remake, Vanilla Sky, which garnered
mixed reviews. Though mostly well-
received by audiences, the movie was
panned by some critics as a narcissistic
pet project for star and producer Tom
Cruise. Opinions still vary on the subject,
but if nothing else, it made the entire
movie-going world aware of the Spanish
Vicky Cristina Barcelona actress. Before TomKat, there was Cruise
and Cruz, more than just co-stars.
From there, as arm candy for the
world’s biggest movie star at the time,
Cruz’s face began appearing every-
where. Many unfamiliar with her previ-
ous work dismissed the actress as just
the latest play-thing for Tom Cruise,
and her work in the U.S. didn’t receive
Los abrazos rotos the same consistent positive reception.

2008’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona paired the
actress again with Javier Bardem, and won
