Problems in oilseed crops production in Nepal

Rapeseed & mustard is liable to frost & cold. Earlier sowing & harvesting before the onset of
frost is only the option . The recommended sowing time of rapeseed & mustard is 15 sept15 oct and harvesting at 15 feb- 15 March.
Lack of sulphur in soil due to use of single graded fertilizer application like urea.
Farmers only uses local low yielding varities
Selection done by farmers is also unscientific; For mustard low land is suitable & for
rapeseed upland is suitable but farmer sows rapeseed in lowland.
Weed infestation like Orobanche have been effecting the yield.
Aphids, Alternaria blight are major pathogens
Mustard and rapeseed are grown in only in marginal lands
No application of organic fertilizer , monocropping system have lowered the soil fertility,
Broadcating of seeds causing ununiform plant population
Rapeseed & musrard are inter or mixed cropped with wheat but rapeseed is un attended for
pest & disease problems
Price of oilseeds always remains steady and stable so farmer unwills to adapt oil seed
farming properly.
Lack of proper knowledge about importance of oilseed crops between Nepalese farmers,
Lack of attention of Nepal government towards analyzing problems and carrying out any
good strategies.
