Each year, thousands of children
experience the unthinkable abuse at
the hands of someone they know and
trust. In a perfect world, McMahon/
Ryan Child Advocacy Center would
be unnecessary. However, we dont
live in a perfect world, and in our
country, a child is sexually abused
every six minutes and each day
nearly five children die from abuse
and neglect.
This past year McMahon/Ryan Child
Advocacy Center (MRCAC) provided
services to more than 650 child abuse
victims and non-offending family
members. Each child has a name, a
face, and a story. Though this may
seem like an incredible number,
because of the secrecy and shame
abused children often carry, we
know there are many more children
that desperately need our help.
While the number of children
we heal each year is extremely
important, its the way in which we
perform and facilitate our services
that sets us apart and matters most
to our clients and the community.
MRCAC believes in the power of
the multidisciplinary, child-friendly
approach to the investigation,
prosecution and treatment of crimes
against children. We work closely
with Onondaga County Child
Protective Services, Onondaga County
Sheriffs Office, City of Syracuse
Police Department, Upstate Medical
University, Vera House, and the
District Attorneys office to serve and
protect our children. Along with the
staff at MRCAC, these agencies are
committed to breaking the cycle of
abuse, bringing justice to our children
and ensuring the restoration of trust
and healing for our young clients.
Looking back over this past year,
we can highlight several initiatives
that are positioning us for future
success. We created a partnership
with the YMCA of Greater Syracuse

A Focus on Prevention
In the United States, nearly 300,000 children were
treated for suspected sexual or severe physical abuse
in 2013. Nationally and in Central New York,
communities are embracing a multidisciplinary
approach to treatment and intervention that is saving
taxpayers money and providing better services to
children and families.
Despite this substantial improvement in the
treatment of child abuse victims,

Guardian Awards
As an organization, our
goal is for every child
to have a safe, happy,
childhood. Protecting our
children is truly a group
effort, and as a community
we must come together and
advocate on their behalf.
Our Annual Guardian
Awards recognize individuals who share our goal and have
selflessly dedicated their lifes work to children. The 2014 Guardian
Award winners were: Terri Liedka, a Social Worker at Reynolds
Elementary School; Carol Norris, a Counselor at Minoa Elementary
School; and Pat Resseguie, a Kindergarten teacher at Palmer
Elementary School. All of our honorees are proof that just one
person can have a profound impact on a childs life.
