Wauseons Vernot Helps Ohio

Girls Win Mid-East Championship
(Saturday, November 15, 2014)-KETTERING, OHIO: How does one follow up a
top three finish in their State Championship meet?
By helping her state win a multi-state
championship, of course.
Taylor Vernot, a senior at Wauseon,
capped off a tremendous season by placing third in the Ohio State Championship
meet, running an 18:37 to do so. This afforded her some attention from someone
helping to assemble the Ohio Girls team
that would end up competing in the MidEast Cross Country Championship.
The Mid-East Championship is a cross
country meet that pits twelve elite runners from Ohio against the best twelve
from Indiana, Michigan, and Illinois, with
separate boys and girls heats. Each state
is allowed to use its own method of selecting their team, as the only requirement by

those running the event is that all runners

must be high school seniors.
Vernot was chosen to help represent
Ohio in the meet.
Coached by Mark Albaugh, the Ohio
Girls performed exceptionally well, as they
broke a tie with Indiana for first place at
thirty-seven points apiece. Michigan came
in third with sixty points, and Illinois
trailed behind everybody else with 130
points.
The fifth girl on her team to finish, Vernot contributed to the victory. Running an
18:55, she came in thirteenth place overall.
(It was) definitely a great experience.
Vernot commented on the meet.
As great as it was, the experience had to
be at least a bit familiar for her.
After all, winning just seems to come
naturally for her.

ROCKET MAN Stryker senior hoops and pitching phenom, Parker Ruffer, signed his
letter of intent to join the University of Toledo Rockets pitching staff on the evening of
November 12. Ruffer, who plans on majoring in Business, is shown seated flanked by
his father, Ned Ruffer, and his mother, Connie Ruffer. Standing behind the Ruffers are
Stryker Athletic Director, Kim Miller, Stryker Baseball Coach Brett Grieser, and Parkers
first coach with the Panthers, Joe Grieser.

just makes the expeience that much

Ten Wauseon Senior Student Athletes Extend Playing Careers

By: T.J. Hug
THE VILLAGE REPORTER

As Noah Castle filed into the library and

took his seat, the ceremony was ready to
begin.
Ten Wauseon seniors sat at a table near
the far wall as they faced the entrance.
Family, friends, and coaches had gathered to show their support, as well as their
pride. Wauseon Athletic Director Matt
Hutchinson presided over the event.
There are schools all over the country doing this today. Hutchinson began.
But I bet most of them dont have as many
kids signing as we do.
Which was probably true, as not every
school is fortunate enough to have ten student athletes go on to play at the collegiate
level. And an overwhelming majority of
those schools wont produce a single NCAA
Division I college athlete, let alone the four
that were sitting among their peers in the
library.
Castle was one such athlete, signing a letter of intent to compete in Track
and Field for the University of Kentucky.
Another track athlete, Sally Frank, will
continue playing the sport at The University of Toledo, a school from which both
of her parents graduated. Cross Country
standout Taylor Vernot will be running for
The University of Dayton in the near future. Meanwhile, Wade Hodges has agreed
to wrestle for The University of Maryland
once he enrolls there.

Two more of the seniors will be playing

NCAA Division II sports in college. Natalie
Koenig decided to play basketball for Ursuline College. Nate Suntken will be heading
to Saginaw Valley State University to play
baseball after graduation.
Peyten Shadbolt will also be playing
baseball at the next level. His school of
choice is NCAA Division IIIs University of
Mount Union. Unfortunately, due to NCAA
regulations, Shadbolt will not be able to receive financial assistance from the university for his athletic services.
The remaining three student athletes,
who will be attending NAIA schools, will
be getting money from their respective
schools to play their sport, however. Maddie Richer has elected to continue her basketball career at Huntington University.
The third member of the Wauseon Baseball team to earn an opportunity to play in
college, Collin Stump, will do so at Taylor
University. Golf standout David Williams
will be attending Graceland University, located in Lamoni, Iowa, and hell be bringing his clubs with him.
Hutchinson concluded the signing with
his closing remarks.
This is an awesome day for Wauseon
Athletics, Hutchinson stated with enthusiasm.
Just one of many, most likely.
This was only the early signing period,
after all.

WAUSEON CONTINUES ON To Regionals

Wauseon Rides Huge First Half To Send Bellevue Packing In Regional Semis
By: Timothy Kays
THE VILLAGE REPORTER
FREMONT, OHIO: November 14, 2014 - After
the offensive hiccup versus Genoa of the week
prior, just about everyone under the sun was
expecting fireworks from the Wauseon Indians
and the Bellevue Redmen in their Division IV Region 12 semifinal game on November 14. The
Tribe defense would be charged with containing
Triston Snezak and Alec Foosthe two-headed
quarterback machine of Bellevue, while the Redmen were tasked with containing Zac Robinson
and the high-octane Wauseon offense. What nobody expected was a nearly flawless display from
all three phases of the Wauseon game in the first
half, where they rolled up 234 first half yards
compared to 95 for Bellevue, building a 27-0
halftime lead before settling on a 34-12 thrashing of the #2 ranked Redmen.
Even though Bellevue took the opening kick
out beyond their own 40, the Wauseon defense
shut them down, forcing a punt. Beginning on
their own nine, the Tribe took advantage of a
pensive Bellevue defense that seemed perplexed
by the shiftiness of quarterback Robinson. Primarily on the legs of the senior signal caller, the
Indians got on the board with a Robinson oneyard run with 6:41 left in the first period. The
PAT kick failed, but the Tribe had a lead that

they would never surrender at 6-0, and they

were just getting started in bamboozling the Bellevue defense.
Again the Redmen took the kick out beyond
their own 40, and again the Wauseon defense
shut them down to force another punt. Starting on the 48 of the Redmen, Robinson and the
Indians shoved the ball down the throat of the
Bellevue defense.
The Tribe ran into a snag inside the 30 of the
Redmen as runs by Jacob Flory and Nate Suntken left Wauseon with a fourth and three at the
19. Going for it on fourth down, Robinson found
a wide open Jacob Newlove at the 11 to move
the chains. Suntken carried the ball down to the
three on the next play. With 19 seconds left in
the opening stanza, Suntken got the call again,
blasting the ball over for the final three yards
and another score. Opting for the two point PAT,
Robinson found Jacob Newlove to make the
score 14-0.
Bellevue took over on their own 34, and immediately went to the air as their passing quarterback Snezak, found their wide receiver - slash
- running quarterback Foos on a screen for a
gain of 14. This, along with the pounding running of freshman Bryce Ray, is what was expected from the Redmen, and it came on the final
play of the first period.
With a first and ten to start the second pe-

riod, Bellevue went back to the air. This time

the ball was tipped into the hands of junior defensive back Danny Hench, who returned the
ball to the 34. The Wauseon offense went back
to work, and the beleaguered Redmen defense
returned to the field. On first down. Robinson
found Newlove at the 25, and he battled his way
down to the 19 to move the chains. Suntken was
stopped after a gain of one, and Robinson was
stopped after a gain of one. Looking at a third
and eight, Robinson rolled left and found Mason Creager at the seven. Creager broke a tackle
at the six, before finally being hauled down at
the one. Robinson evaded backfield traffic to advance the ball inside the one on the first play.
On the next snap, Robinson capped the six-play
drive as he went over the top for the touchdown
with 9:20 left in the period. The PAT kick from
Josh Whitcomb made it a 21-0 game.
Bellevue took over on their own 39, and Ray
ran the ball out to the 44. While it was just a
five yard carry, it was the first positive yardage
gained on the ground by the Redmen to that
point. Their drive died, and a punt rolled into
the endzone for a touchback with 6:55 left in the
half. Wauseon took over at their own 20.
On the first play from scrimmage, Robinson
found Creager out to the 33 on a curl route to
the left. Two pass attempts to Creager fell in

PAIN - TIMES TWO ... Wauseon quarterback Zac Robinson has his legs taken out from
underneath him by a Bellevue defender. The shifty signal caller returned the pain by
single-handedly rushing for twice the combined output of the Redmen.

TOUCHDOWN #2 ... With 19 seconds remaining in the first period, senior Nate Suntken
of Wauseon blows into the end zone to put the Tribe up by a dozen. A subsequent two
point pass from Zac Robinson to Jacob Newlove made it a 14-0 game.

Wauseon Rides Huge First Half To Send Bellevue Packing In Regional Semis

complete, setting up a third

and ten. On the next play,
Robinson dropped back
and fired over the middle
to his 6 6 tight end, Noah
Castle. The Big Indian took
the ball down to the Bellevue 44 to move the chains.
After running around trying
to stop the fleet footed Robinson for almost a half, the
Redmen were now trying
to deal with his armand
there was more to come.
Creager came in motion
on the first down play, taking the handoff and running the ball down to the
31 for another first down.
On the next play, Robinson
connected with Newlove for
a seven yard gain. The Tribe
loaded trips right on second
down. Robinson took the
snap, rolled in the direction
of his receivers and fired a

ered Newlove awaited. The

senior receiver put a happy
ending on an eight-play, 80
yard drive by pulling the
ball away from a Bellevue
defender with 4:36 left in
the period for the fourth
Tribe touchdown of the first
half. The PAT kick clanked
off the left upright, but the
damage had been done.
Wauseon kicked off to Bellevue, up 27-0. The Redmen set up shop on their
own 39.
Foos came out under
center, and ran the ball
for three. Snezak returned
and handed the ball to Ray,
who picked up a first down
in Tribe territory. Mixing
the pass and the run, the
Redmen finally began to
move the ball on a consistent basis. Foos checked
back in under center and
tried a sweep, but Hench,
coming around the blind
side, dropped the running
quarterback for a loss of
four. A false start penalty
moved the ball back another five yards, setting up
a second and 19. Snezak
returned under center, but
a pass was batted away by
Robinson. On a third and
19, Bellevue loaded up in
a five-wide formation with
an empty backfield. Foos
hauled in the ball, but he
was popped while running, jarring the ball loose.
Ray caught the ball out of
midair, and advanced it to
the Wauseon 19 for a first
down. The Redmen were
finally rolling on offense,
but the clock was working
against them.
Ray went for two on first
down, and Foos grabbed
a pass to the 11 with 1:30
left in the half. A screen
under heavy pressure was
rejected by Castle, setting
up a fourth and two with
a minute left in the half. A
pass to Foos was blown up
by Peyten Shadbolt, who
took the receiver down a
yard short of the first down
marker. The 12 play drive
died, and the half ended
with Wauseon pitching a
27-0 shutout.
The first half numbers
spoke volumes about the
domination of the Tribe on
offense and defense. At the
half, Ray had 6 rushes for
37 yards. No other Bellevue runner, including Foos,
had positive yardage on the
ground. Snezak was 5 of 8
for 66 yards and an interception through the air.
Contrast that to the output of Wauseon, and the
first half domination was
more than obvious. Robinson rushed 11 times for 64
yards and two touchdowns.
Suntken ran 6 times for 18
yards and a score, Flory
went twice for 3 yards, and
Creager ran once for 11.
Through the air, Robinson
had a Peyton Manningesque 9 of 12 for 138 first
half yards and a touchdown. Newlove grabbed 5
passes for 67 yards and a
score, and Creager had 3
catches for 50 yards. Castle grabbed 2 passes for 41
yards, and Luke Rychener
caught a pass for 2 yards.
For all the fireworks in the
first half, the adjustments
made by the Redmen were
more than effective in the
second.
With the arrival of the
second half, Lady Momen-

tum pulled an Elvis and left

the building. The Indians,
who scored four times and
never punted in the first
half, punted four times and
never scored an offensive
touchdown in the second.
The Redmen went all out
after Robinson, and the
Tribe signal caller was getting dinged up in the process. Bellevue finally got on
the board with 31 seconds
left in the third, but a failed
two point PAT left the score
at 27-6. After another punt,
the Bellevue offense began
another march, but it was
short-circuited when Shadbolt stepped in front of a
Snezak pass for a pick-six
with 4:05 left in the game.
With Robinson now out of
the game and limping on
the sideline, the Whitcomb
kick made it 34-6, but the
#2 ranked Redmen werent
throwing in the towel. Sixty seconds later, Bellevue
picked up their second
score of the game, but again
the two point PAT failed,
leaving the score where it
remained at the final gun,
34-12.
Robinson finished with
90 yards and 2 touchdowns
on 20 carries, and a 15 of
24 night passing for 170
yards and a touchdown.
His injury status remains
unknown at press time.
Suntken carried the ball
11 times for 26 yards and a
score, and Jeremiah Kauffman ran 3 times for 17
yards in relief of Robinson.
Creager ran twice for 15
yards, and Flory was limited to 4 yards on 3 carries.
Newlove caught 6 passes
for 76 yards and a touchdown, and Creager had 4
grabs for 50 yards. Castle reeled in 3 passes for
46 yards, and Rychener
caught a pass for 2 yards.
Defensively,
Shadbolt
had a pick-six, and Hench
picked off a pass. Derek
Rupp recovered a fumble,
and Castle, as big a pain on
the defense as he was on offense, registered a sack and
batted down two passes at
the line.
Up next for Wauseon is
the D-IV Region 12 Regional
championship game, their
first since 1993, against a
tough #4 ranked Kenton
on November 21 in Findlay.
The Wildcats turned back
the #1 ranked Wooster Triway Titans, 13-6, to earn
the right to face the Tribe.
