THE APPLE-TREE
By John Galsworthy
John Galsworthy is a prominent English novelist, playwright and short-story
writer. The Apple-Tree (1917) is one of the most popular long short stories written
by John Galsworthy.
It is written in beautiful words and is worth reading. In this novel, Galswothy tells
us the love tragedy between Ashurst and Megan. The genre of the text is social as
the author describes social, professional spheres of life with the help of such
vocabulary as: college, football, girl, friend and so on.
The types of text are narration, dialog and description. The author narrates about
meeting of Frank Ashurst and his friend Robert Garton with a Megan. The author
presents a character of Ashurst indirectly. We infer about him from what he says,
thinks and does.
In the novel, the author uses narration which portrays the dual personality of a main character.
Through the portrayal, he uncovers the essence of bourgeoisie. Also he gave us
characteristic of Ashursts friend Robert Garton indirectly. Garton queer, round-thecorner, 4 knotted, curly, like some primeval beast. Both had a literary bent; neither
wore a hat. Garton's was a kind of dark unfathomed mop. He is flat and statistic
character.
Also in the beginning of the text we see direct description of his character:
Ashurst pale, idealistic, full of absence, and also we can see what kind of man he
is through indirect portrait, for example, this sentence pictures Ashursts nature
very vividly: Every bough was swinging in the wind, every spring bird calling,
and a slanting sunlight dappled the grass. The absence of the culmination is very
strange thing in the composition of any story, but this novel is endures in a peaceful
and regular manner. The only thing that breaks the composition is a sudden, long
dialog in the middle of the third person narration. One of the main thing that the
author uses this stylistic device to emphasize the difference between two friends.
The story is written in simple language. He also writes that the two friends while
going havent met a soul for miles. This metaphor is used in order to show that the
farm is situated by itself and people on the farm live exclusive lives. While
describing Megan the author also uses many epithets and metaphors. Megans eyes
were the wonder dewy as if opened for the first time that day. Using this stylistic
device the author shows Megans beauties of nature.

Once young handsome guy Ashurst unconsciously falls in love with the simple
country girl Megan just because he finds her pray for him and kiss his pillow
secretly. Although he knows that Megan is lack of intellectual personality, and is
not in the same class with him, he promises her that he would marry on her. He
makes this decision just because of his impulse and the drive of the beautiful spring.
He had plucked a blue floweret, and was twiddling it against the sky. A cuckoo
began calling from a thorn tree. The sky, the flowers, the songs of birds! By these
sentences he have described a depicting nature.
