A by-election was called last month after

long time councillor John Rempel resigned
from the position due to health reasons.
Nomination day was Nov. 17 and five Strathmore residents put their names forward. Allan Auger, Glenn Freeland, Nicole Gibbons,
Steve Grajczyk and Jason Pollo are all hoping
to be the successful candidate that fills the
spot.
The advance polls will be held Dec. 8 at the
Town Office 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Anyone
can vote in the advance polls or on Election
Day providing they are over the age of 18 and
live in the Town of Strathmore. Election Day
itself is on Dec. 15 at the Strathmore Civic
Centre from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
According to the Elections Act we only
have 90 days to hold an election after we receive a resignation from a councillor. So that
90 days pretty much took us (to) early January, said Jennifer Sawatsky, returning officer.
Administration felt it would be best to try
and hold the election prior to Christmas, while
not being to close to it, rather than in January
when many residents may be gone on vacation. That and a couple of other factors were
considered before choosing the date.
Basically the biggest (reason) is that we
had to hold it within 90 days and then Dec.
15 was chosen because that was the earliest we could have it before Christmas and
still comply with all our advertising requirements, said Sawatsky.
Because its not a full election, votes will be
cast using paper ballots and counted by hand.
While a tie isnt a very common occurrence,
if one did happen it would likely result in a
recount.
Surprisingly if theres a tie you write down
two names, throw them in a hat and draw
one, thats the provincial guidelines, said
Sawatsky.
We most likely would be asked for a recount on the votes, but if it was still a tie then
whoever was drawn from the hat would be
proclaimed the winner.

Memories recalled

While the stories of Cluny and Gleichen were more than 100 years in the
making, it still took five years for those
histories to be collected and published,
culminating in the book launch of
Memories Recalled: District of Cluny
and Gleichen 2014 on Nov. 15 at the
Cluny Hall.
More than 250 people travelled from
far and near for an afternoon of renewing old acquaintances, making final
payments on their copies of the book,
and a roast beef supper before finally
picking up their copy of the 724-page
limited edition book.
This book is a continuation of the
communities previous history books,
Gleichen Call from 1968 and Memories of Cluny from 1985, said Suzanne
Jackson, who chaired the committee of
seven that worked on the book.
When we decided to begin work in
earnest on this book, we started with
the previous volumes as a launching
point for contacting families and organizations by phone, letters, e-mail and
even word of mouth, asking for writ-
ten contributions and photographs,

she said. When our committee started
this project we were working one day
a week at the hall. The last few months
it has been more like four to six days
a week, plus the work we took home
with us.
The result was more than 10,000 volunteer hours spent just at the hall, by
the committee and those who assisted
their work.
Some of that work included documenting photos and press clippings,
typing out hand-written submissions,
doing phone interviews, and deciding
on the layout of the book.
They received over 1,800 images but
were limited by space to just 1,100,
plus the commitment to have at least
one photo from every family that submitted one.
Jackson emphasized the importance
of the volunteer work and the support
of the wider community in making this
book a reality.
The support was evident in the fact
that 720 books were pre-sold before
the launch, and the first two copies
were auctioned off to raise funds for
the Gleichen Historical Society Book

The annual Santa Claus parade, which
is scheduled for Nov. 29, is facing the
possibility of cancellation if more people dont sign up to participate.
We only have a handful of entries
and we would like enough so we dont
have to cancel the parade, said Tracey
Rogers with Aztec Real Estate.
The parade, which begins at 5:30
p.m. and runs through downtown, has
been a popular event for many years,
but with numbers dwindling its getting
harder to keep the family event run-
ning.
Anyone with a float, mascots, horses, or even a marching band is being
asked to contact Rogers about entering
the parade.
It doesnt have to be a big float, just
a business or individual(s) who want
to take part and get involved in the
community and get into the Christmas
spirit.
There is no entry fee, and there are
a few rules participants must follow:
no candy or treats can be thrown from
a float or vehicles; walkers along the
sidewalks, however, can toss out candy
and treats. Walkers must also be wear-
ing clothing that illuminates, for safety

reasons.
Parade entries must not use a Santa
Claus unless arranged on the last float;
all drivers must have an appropriate
and valid drivers license; and no air
horns or sirens can be used. The use
of music and lights on floats is encouraged.

Registration deadline is Nov. 22. If
enough people have not signed up by
then, the parade will be cancelled.

So what this program is for me, is it
really allowed me to sort of bridge that
gap and allowed me to figure out what
do I like in business, what do I want to
work at and it gave me kind of a safety net. To be able to forge the coaching career that Ive been able to do, it
wouldnt have happened without RBC,
so thats what I think is really neat.
Canadian Pizza Unlimited
Strathmore RCMP are currently investigating a

report of fraudulent phone calls. On November
12th a member of the public received a phone
call from a 403 prefix number displaying that
it was the Scotia Bank on there caller ID. The
voice on the other line stated that they had
won a prize and was looking for the members
personal information. The RCMP would like to
remind the public that financial institutions will
never call to inform a person that they have
won a prize. Fraudsters such as these have
shown to have the ability to change the caller
IDs display to match the organization they are
calling from. The RCMP would like to advise
the members of the public that if they receive
these phone calls not to give out your personal
information and to hang up immediately. If you
have any further information that could assist
with investigations like these please contact
the Strathmore RCMP.

A dream came true for one young
Strathmore RBC branch member on
Nov. 13. Melissa Trombley, 23, has
wanted to own her own home since
she was a little girl, and thanks to RBC
and their Someday contest she is now
$20,000 closer to that goal.
What the bank did was they went
out to our 10 million customers across
the country and they said, tell us about
your someday, what is it thats important to you, what is it thats out there
that someday you want to achieve, said
Jeff Boyd, regional president for RBC.
Over the summer customers were
asked to send in their videos with their
someday stories. There were 15,000
videos submitted, and from those 32
of them were picked and given $1,000.
Also from those, Trombleys video was
picked at random as the $20,000 prizewinner.
She found out about the contest
while she online taking care of some
her banking and decided to enter. She
mentioned that her inspiration is her
son, Silas who is nine months old, and
that she wanted to buy a home for him
to grow up in.
I had bought a jolly jumper for my
son Silas and I had wanted to try him
in it for the first time, so I put him in it
and I took a video of him and he loved
it, he was having a great time in it,
said Trombley, describing her winning
video.
Its for him, its all for him, so he can
grow up in a home he can call his own.
She plans to use the money as a down
payment for a house in Carseland.
I grew up there as a small child,
I went to the Carseland Elementary
School, I enjoyed going there. I plan on
him going to Carseland Elementary and
I want him to just have a great life like
I did, said Trombley.

Its been a busy, and somewhat hectic, six months since
author Audrey Gene, known to family and friends as Reesa
Bruce, released her book Of the Dragonfly.
When asked to describe the past six months, a whirlwind was the phrase that came to mind for the author.
Since the official release in May, Bruce has had 21 book
signings, and there are many more to come. She has been
able to help raise money for numerous fundraisers, and has
been invited as a guest of honour to many book clubs and
school presentations.
Ive also been blessed with a demand for the sequel to
Of the Dragonfly, which Im trying to work on, and have
had many requests for my book to be made into a movie,
said Bruce.
Its a huge compliment that people say that, and it would
be a dream come true.
Of the Dragonfly has also been released digitally on
Kobo and Amazon, and there are 13 more e-book retailers,
including Apple iBooks, adding the book to their catalogue
in the next couple weeks, just in time for the holidays.
Bruce said it has been the support of local businesses and
community members that have helped her book become the
success it is.
Thats the biggest thing I would like to get across is
just my gratitude, she said.
I just think about all the people that keep coming forward,
or the e-mails that I get and the text messages or mail from
people I would never even imagine. People I dont know,
people from my childhood, people at the vet clinic, even in
the city. Its just amazing.
Though Ive always been grateful to have been raised
in Strathmore, Im even more grateful to be launching my
career in this town. Strathmore and surrounding areas have
been wonderful not only in supporting me as a new author,
but also for supporting our other local authors, musicians,
artists, athletes and businesses. We are very fortunate to live
where we live.

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS ~ Wally & Linda Freeman

Wallys grandfather, Harry Freeman, was born in
Leicestershire, England in 1877, and immigrated
to Canada in 1905, where he worked for a construction company in Calgary until 1908. He then
moved to the CPR Farm in Strathmore, where he
worked as the horticulturist in the greenhouses.
In 1909, he returned to England, where the following year (1910) he married
Polly Springthorpe of Rutland,
England and brought her to Canada in 1910. They had four sons
and two daughters. Wallys maternal grandparents Tom and Jesse
Glendinning arrived in Canada in
1904 or 1905.
Wallys parents were Johnny and
Tena Freeman, and he was born at
Grace Hospital, in Calgary in 1946.
He has no siblings. He attended Samuel Crowther
High School, the first class of the new school
opened in 1954, and he was in the first class to
graduate. In his early years, he was a member of
the W.I.D. Rat Pack spending his time south of
the highway. He joined the City of Calgary Fire
Department in 1968, where he worked for 30
years. From 1978 to 2006 he was a member of the
Strathmore Volunteer Fire Dept., serving as Fire
Chief from 2001 to 2004. In 1989, he served as a
Town Councillor for three months, before being
promoted to Mayor through 1992. In those days,
a common pastime in the afternoon was to play
golf. So, there he would be on the golf course,
when a member of his staff would telephone him.
After advising the caller that he was on a course,
the caller would apologize and hang up. To this
day, Wally doesnt think those callers knew he was
on the golf course!
Linda was born in Russell, Man. in 1948, the second oldest of three children, two sisters Diana and
Kathy, and brother Ken. With her parents Al and
Fan Cousins, the family moved to Taber, where
her dad joined Canadian Western Natural Gas
(CWNG) in 1951. Her dad was appointed District
Manager for CWNG in Strathmore in November
1960, so the family moved here, which allowed
Linda to graduate from Samuel Crowther High

School in 1966 and attend Business College in
Calgary before working for the County of Wheatland for two years.
Wally and Linda met at high school when Linda
was the lifeguard, and they were married in 1968.
They lived in Calgary for three years from 1969 to
1971, before moving back to Strathmore to start
their family of four children, Sean born in 1971,
Trevor born in 1972, and the twins Scott and Theresa born in 1974, and they now
have four grandchildren.
In 1992, after leaving town office, Wally and Linda formed Freewest Developments, and built
Parklane Place; then, in 1994, they
built the Third & Third Mall.
Linda has been very involved
throughout her life with cake decorating, and advised she belonged
to the Sugar Craft Guild in Calgary. She has been privileged to be in the position
to take instruction from three Professional Cake
Decorators who visited Calgary from England at
different times. Linda and Elisabeth Struiksma
created the Strathmore 75th Anniversary Cake in
1986. This cake, measuring three feet by six feet,
and weighing 218 pounds, was created in Lindas
kitchen! They had to remove the kitchen window,
to move the cake on a specially constructed plywood base to the Old Skating Rink, which was
originally located at 4th Ave and 2nd Street, site of
the old IGA building!
I was shown icing figurines of 1800s era ladies
in ball gowns, and many other items, all made
from icing sugar! She is also an avid sewing machine operator - making many of the familys
clothing, as well as household goods.
Their community activities include the Strathmore Volunteer Fire Dept. for Wally, while Linda
is a member of the United Church Quilting Group.
They are both interested in curling, both as players and spectators.
The biggest change in and around Strathmore
is the move by The Royal Bank, Alberta Treasury
Bank, IGA and now Co-op to The Ranch Area
close to the highway. This is going to create a
huge void downtown.

Harper Government releases

economic and fiscal projection

The Honourable Kevin Sorenson, Minister of
State (Finance) and Member of Parliament for
Crowfoot, welcomed the Harper Governments release of the annual Update of Economic and Fiscal
Projections, which confirms that the Government
remains on track for a balanced budget in 2015,
with an expected surplus of $1.9 billion.
Our Government remains committed to what
matters most to Canadians: jobs, growth, and
long-term prosperity. Canada has come a long
way however; the global economy remains fragile. We continue to take steps to put more money back into the pockets of Canadian families,
said Minister Sorenson. We are fulfilling the 2011
Election campaign promises we made. We are ensuring that Canadas total government debt continues to decline and remains the lowest of any
G-7 country.
In addition to growing the size of the Canadian
economy, the Government will reduce the size of
the accumulated federal debt with unused annual
contingency funds.
The Conservative Government has recently an-
nounced targeted tax relief for Canadian families,

including:
The new Family Tax Cut, allowing a higher-income spouse to transfer up to $50,000 of taxable
income to a spouse in a lower tax bracket. This tax
credit will provide tax relief capped at $2,000
for couples with children under the age of 18.
An increase in the Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB) for children under the age of six. As
of January 1st, 2015, parents will receive benefits
of $160 per month for each child under the age of
six (up from $100 a month).
An expansion of the UCCB to children six
through seventeen. As of January 1st, 2015, parents will receive a benefit of $60 per month for
children aged six through seventeen.
An increase in the Child Care Expense Deduction dollar limits by $1,000, effective for the 2015
tax year.
The latest tax cuts and benefits represent close
to $27 billion back in the pockets of families over
this year and the next five years. Every Canadian
family with children under the age of 18 will have
more money in their pockets because of these tax
cuts and benefits, concluded Minister Sorenson.

Strathmore Shoppers Drug Mart held their annual Look Good and Feel Better fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 8 starting at noon. The campaign raises
money through ticket sales and silent auction items. The money goes directly to the Tom Baker foundation that supports the Look Good Feel Better
campaign.

Busy month for Crowfoot Multi

Crowfoot Multi Club had their second meeting
of the year on Nov. 3.
Lauren and David are our district reps for this
4-H year.
There will be a hot dog supper for the December meeting. Our club is planning to apply
for a 4-H exchange. When our club went bowling everyone had lots of fun and we got to have
pizza and play some pool at the end of the night.

for another great club funday.
On Nov. 8 was the Harvest Gala in Calgary in
the Palomino Room BMO centre. Emily Hilton,
Rebecca Madden, Sonia Pagenkopf, Billy Comstock and Kaitlyn Stewart helped stuff gift bags
for the banquet guests.
Quinn Johnson from our club represented the
Wheatland 4-H District at the Remembrance Service on Nov. 11 at the Civic Center by laying the
District wreath.
On Nov. 19 there is a Sponsorship Appreciate
dinner at Strathmore Civic Center.
For more exciting news, on Nov. 21, Gord Bamford is having a concert! Fifteen per cent of concert proceeds go to 4-H Alberta Legacy Funds.
The concert is at the Badlands Community Facility. You can purchase tickets at the Strathmore

Lalonde attended the CAPL Dinner with RaeLee Pieschel from the 4-H foundation to receive

Nomination Day for the Town of Strathmore by-elections was Nov. 17 and five
residents put their names forward; Allan Auger, Glenn Freeland, Nicole Gibbons,
Steve Grajczyk and Jason Pollo.
The advanced polls will be held Dec. 8 at the Town Office 8:30 a.m. to 6:30
p.m. Anyone can vote in the advanced polls, or on Election Day providing they
are over the age of 18 and live in the Town of Strathmore. Election Day itself is
on Dec. 15 at the Strathmore Civic Centre from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Here is an introduction to each of the candidates.
ALLAN AUGER
Hello, my name is Allan Auger and I am running for council in the
upcoming by-election. I am a long time resident of Strathmore having
lived here for nearly 35 years and enjoy the small town atmosphere
very much.
I have also been locally employed in and around Strathmore most
of my life. I ran for council in 2013 and my reasons for running again
have not really changed a whole lot. As I said I enjoy the small town
atmosphere that Strathmore provides and knowing that this town will
grow within its new boundaries I would like the opportunity to be on
council and represent the people of this town to see that it does not lose its small town
charm and is still an outstanding place to live and work and raise a family.
I believe that most of the issues that were uppermost in our minds during the last election are still very important a year later. The development of our commercial lands to help
keep our residential taxes stable and the construction of a multi-use facility for Strathmore
and the surrounding areas as well as the revitalization of our downtown core.
But there has been one issue that has risen to the forefront in the last year and that is
the treatment of our seniors not just in this community, but also across Alberta. Seniors
across Canada are probably one of the largest lobbying groups in this country and yet they
seem to have lost their voice. No longer treated like the valuable resource they should be
but instead treated like a commodity to be used for profit. This scares me. If you would

GLENN FREELAND
I have been a resident of the town since 1999. My wife Sandy I have
owned two businesses in Strathmore; the original owner of Target
Fitness, which I sold just over five years ago, and I am the owner of
Aurora Capital Partners (ACP), which I started in 2003.
ACP is a traditional Retirement and Estate Planning Firm, we focus
on retirement wealth retention and generational wealth transfer using
established fundamentals. My office is on 2nd beside Rockys Bakery,

NICOLE GIBBONS
I have lived in the community for five years, having moved here
from B.C., via Calgary, with my daughter. I have raised her on my
own since she was two, a challenge and a blessing. Financial accountability and prioritizing have always been a part of my life, I am the
manager at Liberty Tax, where I assist people with various financial
needs and decisions. Prior to Liberty Tax I spent many years in retail
management, helping customers, and guiding young people into the
workforce.
I am very committed to my community, Strathmore is growing by
leaps and bounds, I hope to bring some financial accountability, prudent planning, and to
help set priorities should I be elected. We need to meet the needs of the citizens of Strathmore, needs such as sustainable road maintenance, the revitalization of downtown Strathmore, activities for our youth, education past high school, economic growth, employment,
transit for all citizens who need it. So many of our businesses are on the outer edge of
town now, it is harder for teens, seniors and non-drivers to patronize or fill employment
positions. That will only become harder as Co-Op moves.
I hope you will consider electing me to town council as your representative and voice,
Strathmore has tremendous potential, it is close enough to the big city and yet still retains
its small town friendly charm. Prioritizing needs over frills, ensuring decisions are sound
and enhance the majority of the lives of its residents, and being available for questions and
comments is my pledge to you. As Strathmore grows, so do the needs of its residents and
patrons, with dedication, passion, and planning we as a community can guide Strathmore
into being a vibrant, healthy home for us all. Remember, your vote matters!

Hello, my name is Steve Grajczyk and Im running for the open
council seat in the Town of Strathmore. I have lived in Strathmore
for 37 years. I have two children and three wonderful grandchildren.
In the past I have owned and operated two small businesses successfully in Strathmore and also worked in commercial investment
real estate for 35 years where I gained a wealth of knowledge in that
field. For 10 years I was the GM and President of the Strathmore Ag.
Society.
Over the years I have belonged to various committees and was a
volunteer on many boards in Strathmore. Currently, I am a volunteer with the upcoming
2015 Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games.
Through my previous experiences, I feel I can serve as councillor for the community
and citizens of Strathmore.
My past 30 years of participation and involvement in the community has given me good
insight to the needs and direction that best serves the growth of the community. We must
also encourage cooperation and respect for our rural neighbours who shop and enjoy
amenities in our town. We must also advocate for the seniors as they are the ones who
built our community. I would also like to continue to make improvements to our parks,
pathways and recreational facilities. As well as continuing improvements of our streets.
I am also very familiar with our ongoing storm water issues, which could become very
expensive for the town taxpayers.
I am retired and have the time, experience and knowledge to be your councillor. I have
a strong vision of the processes we need to meet the challenges we are facing. I want this
community to move forward for families to want to live and prosper here. I have a solid
background in selling commercial real estate and have the knowledge and connections to
help bring commerce and investment to Strathmore.
It is imperative that we have a strong industrial park so that all citizens can live here,
work here, and enjoy all the amenities here without going to the city. We need a greater
engagement with the community, Mayor, and council, and encourage public input and
concerns.

My name is Jason Pollo, Im 32 and have grown up in the Strathmore area. Country raised, I had good values instilled by my parents.
I graduated from SHS in 2000 and after a few different construction
jobs and a brief stint in the oil patch I decided to come back and get
in to the family business of trucking and excavating, which I now run
along side my father.
Ive always had an interest in politics and believe you cant complain if your not willing to step up and try and do your part to effect
change. When this opportunity came about I decided now was the
time.
I feel a younger voice who isnt afraid to go against the grain to stand up for what is
right is needed. I am a huge believer in transparency in government as well as elected officials being held accountable. Growing up here, Strathmore was a great place and I would
like to do my part to rejuvenate it and make it a great place for the younger generation to
raise a family and work or start a business.
Im a blue collared guy who is easily approachable and is ready to listen to any and all

The Alberta Dance Theatres (ADT) production of The
Wonderful Wizard of Oz will see three Strathmore dancers
on the stage this year.
The classic tale is being brought to life on the University
of Calgary stage Nov. 28-30.
I chose the Wonderful Wizard of Oz for this years Alberta
Dance Theatre production in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the classic film, as well as the exciting adventure
that this timeless tale takes seemed to lend itself so easily to
dance, said Deanne Walsh, artistic director.
I feel that all generations will be able to connect to this
fun story and look forward to seeing their favourite characters come to life onstage, in our creative twist on the story.
Nave Raycroft, Saige Aleman and Lane Habing, who all
dance with Expressions the Dance Gallery, auditioned successfully for roles with the show.
Aleman has been dancing since she was three, and this is
her first show with the ADT. She has been cast in the roles
of the lion, Oz, and is in the tornado group, which is her
favourite of the three.
I just like the theme of it, black and white and all fun
characters, said Aleman.
The opening scene is her favourite of the entire production because it involves everyone.
Going through the whole audition process was really interesting to see how they work it. It gives the kids a good
idea as to what it takes to actually be involved in a production of this caliber, said Christa Aleman, Saiges mom.
Then if its something they wish to pursue further on
down the line then it gives them just a really good taste of
what performing arts looks like.
Raycroft first began dancing with ADT in 2010 when she
performed in Alice in Wonderland but officially began her
dancing career when she was three-years-old.
When asked why she still performs with ADT, five shows
later, she said, I think really because it is just so different
from anything else we really do at regular dance classes,
because you get to participate in the choreography.
She is in the tornado dance, plays a crow, and a winged
monkey.
Im also a green person from Emerald City, Id have to say
that would be my favourite, said Raycroft.
Its different from the other ones because the crows and
winged monkeys are kind of evil and down low and then
that its really fun and bubbly.
Dance has been a big part of Raycrofts life for a long time,
and despite moving into junior high this year, she seems to
have added to her dance repertoire instead of easing back
a bit.
Habing is returning for her second performance with the
dance troupe her first was in last years Never Never Land.
She plays a lion, a humbug, a lollipop kid, another lollipop
kid in the opening and a deadly poppy.
In the finale we get to hold ribbons and do a dance to
it like were celebrating, and we get to use ribbons and do
cool twirls with the ribbons, said Habing, describing her

She was happy to return for another show with ADT, because last year it was just a good experience to do it.
The show is on stage Nov. 28 at 7 p.m., Nov. 29 at 1 p.m.
and 4 p.m. and on Nov. 30 at 1 pm. There will also be two
special performances on Nov. 27 for students from the girls
schools to attend. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the
door.

A collaborative production between
Strathmore High Schools (SHS) Blackfoot students, dance students and Glee
students is coming to the SHS stage on
Nov. 23.
The production, which was inspired
by City of Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi and set to Peter Gabriels album
New Blood, which is also the title of the
production, will run Nov. 23-25 nightly
at 7 p.m. The story follows the tale of
a young native man who is reclaiming
his traditions.
Its kind of exciting because its the
dance class, the Blackfoot class and the
Glee class all combining this time. It
was kind of inspired by Mayor Nenshi
in Calgary, said dance teacher Deanne
Bertsch.
He declared this year, 2014, the year
of reconciliation because the reconciliation commission finished their last interview with the residential school survivors back in March.
So he put a challenge to Calgarians
and citizens of surrounding areas to
learn more about this time in history
and do something in response. This is
kind of Strathmore High Schools response to Mayor Nenshis challenge.
The dance class has created contemporary pieces to Gabriels music, and
some of the students in the Blackfoot
class are doing native drumming and
dancing and singing.
Its been really exciting to work with
the Blackfoot kids and hear whats im-
portant to them, said Bertsch.

Two professional artists, George Littlechild, a Canadian First Nations artist,
and Doug Levitt have agreed to allow
the school to showcase some of their
work during the performance.
Bertsch said people should come to
see the show so they can see the history of the Blackfoot people in a new
way and to celebrate the traditions of
the Blackfoot people in the way of music and dance and poetry.
Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased in advance by calling the school
at 403-934-3135, or at the door.

Strathmore High Schools (SHS) Me
to We Club held a vow of silence on
Nov. 13 in an effort to raise awareness
on child poverty and labour. The club
is also raising money to help send Vivian, a Kenyan student, to high school
for four years.
Weve

trips to Kenya. So
weve seen the
school in its building phase, weve
visited after its
first class started
attending and we
were there last
May as well, said Christine Magill, Me
to We organizer.
Were basically sponsoring a girl from
one of the communities (Osenetoi) that
weve been fundraising for since 2009.
The Kisaruni All Girls Secondary
School was built in Kenya to provide
an opportunity for girls in the royal village of Osentoi the chance to go to high
school.
The idea is to fundraise a total of
$10,000 and thatll cover high school
which is grades 9 through 12 and itll
cover her education, room and board,
everything she needs for four years of
school, said Magill.
Me to We often works with the Free

the Children organization, a group that
has been working closely with the Kenya community of Kisaruni to allow
girls to apply for school.
Vivian would have to work incredibly hard to do really well in her previous exams in order to receive a scholarship to Kisaruni. So we actually asked
if there was a way
for us to fundraise
for Kisaruni and
they matched us
with her, said Magill.

This year other clubs within SHS have
gotten on board to help with the fundraising efforts. One of those clubs is
the cosmopolitan class, which will host
a fundraising event on Nov. 20 to assist
with putting Vivian through school.
We find some cause the kids are passionate about and we donate the proceeds to that, said Cosmopolitan teacher Jeanette Greep.
This year we decided to put it towards the Me to We student Vivian. So
our girls volunteer their time from 9
a.m. to 9:30 p.m. All the money we raise
will go towards Me to We.

Advocating for diabetes

One Strathmore teen is getting the
chance to have her voice heard in Ottawa next week in the fight against diabetes as part of the Kids for a Cure campaign.
Sarah Stewart, along with 39 other inspirational children living with Type 1
diabetes (T1D) across the country, will
be representing the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation ( JDRF) and meeting
with Members of Parliament and Senators Nov. 25.
The goal behind the trip to Ottawa
is to bring more awareness to the differences between Type 1 and Type 2
diabetes, to advocate for funding for
researching a cure, and to possibly see
T1D named differently.
Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes
are really similar so people just say diabetes and dont know that theres different types. They just assume that the only

is curable, said Stewart.
I think it is a good idea to change
the name because then it wouldnt be
as annoying to have people stereotype
what it is. People think I got it from
having too much sugar, or I cant have
sugar or they dont think its that big
of a deal because when theyre thinking Type 2, oh you just have
to lose some weight and your
good, or you just have to eat
healthy and youre good, but
thats just what they assume.
People think that T1D is curable, but its not.
Type 2 can be cured with a
proper diet and exercise. That
is not the case with Type 1.
T1D is an autoimmune disease, it is not caused by lifestyle choice,
and those diagnosed with it become
insulin dependent for life. In order for
Sarah to get to her 16th birthday, she
will need 3,100 insulin injections, and
will have to prick her finger to get her
blood sugar levels 6,450 times.
She is excited to be heading to Ottawa to speak and hopefully help the
government change their way of thinking.
I kind of want them to see how serious it is because theyre just kind of
passing it off as something thats not as
important as cancer. Theyre equally important to me, they dont see it as serious, said Stewart.
It was two years ago that Stewart was
diagnosed, nearly losing her life in the
process.
In the summer of 2012 I was camping and I had some symptoms like
hunger and thirst and tiredness and
other bladder problems. I just kind of
passed it off because it was summer
time and it usual to be thirsty, and tired
and hungry in summer because youre
active, especially when camping, said

But then I went home and started to

vomit a lot.
Her stomach seemed to be rejecting
everything she was trying to eat. Two
weeks later she had lost about 25lbs.
Her dad took her to the hospital where
she was told the doctor thought it was
because she was dehydrated. Her dad
didnt think it sounded like a plausible
answer and took her in for
a second opinion at another
hospital. They also couldnt
determine what was wrong,
but decided to send her to the
Stollery Childrens Hospital in
Edmonton where she was diagnosed, and hospitalized for
10 days.
If we would have been 30
or 45 minutes later to the first
hospital then she would have passed
away, said her brother Kyle.
It has been an adjustment for the entire family as they learn a new way of
living. Stewart is constantly monitoring
her carbohydrate and blood sugar levels, and her mom, Michelle Woods, is
always keeping an eye on her, worried
something may happen in the middle
of the night.
As part of the Kids for a Cure campaign Stewart had to raise $500 to show
they are committed to funding research
for a cure. Michelle reached out to the
Strathmore Lions who donated $500 to
them and their cause.

conducting leading edge clinical trials
to try and help with the management,
care and cure of T1D. Type 1 can cause
other complications such as blindness,
kidney failure, nerve damage and heart
attacks.

The Strathmore Wheatland Kings
want to forget their most recent home
game as they were annihilated 9-3 by
the Mountainview Colts on Nov. 14.
Head coach Jeremy Blumes put it simply that it was downright embarrassing
for the hometown fans to watch a poor
display of Junior B hockey.
You know it felt like we had a good
week of practice but obviously there
was a lack of teamwork, communication (and) simple missed defensive assignments where guys are five feet from
the outside of our crease and left untouched, said Blumes. Tough night to
be a goalie if youre playing in front of
our players thats for sure.
The difference in the game was that
they were able to capitalize on the
Kings being out of position.
One guy tries to do another guys job
and all of sudden somebody else is left
open on the ice. So its a matter of sticking with the program and trusting that
your teammates is going to take care
of his assignment and you take care of
yours, said Blumes.
He felt that there was a lack of prepa-

ration, which resulted in the team not

being able to keep up to the transition
game of Mountainview.
Its a combination of things - I dont
think we were as prepared as we needed to be which is a real mystery because
the last time we played them, these guys
jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first five
minutes as well, said Blumes.
Brett Dumaine scored twice and added an assist, while captain Kirby Ruzesky notched a goal and an assist in the
loss. Brayden Beckley collected three
assists.
Unfortunately, the Kings struggles
continued the following day in Coaldale.
The Kings lost 6-3 and assistant coach
Joel Robinson admitted that there was a
lack of motivation in the players, which
cost them as the Copperheads scored
five first period goals.
(In Coaldale it) seemed to be the
same story over and over again. We
cant consistently play 60 minutes of
hockey they scored five goals in the
first and we only scored one, said Robinson. If you take away that period and
its a totally different hockey game. We
really need to start playing 60 minutes
of consistent hockey.
Things could have gone better for the Wheatland Kings as they lost 9-3 to the Mountainview Colts on
Nov. 14 at the Strathmore Family Centre.

themselves out of an early hole with the
Copperheads and never could catch up
to the pace of play.
Slow starts are really hurting us right
now. We cant seem to get a good hop
on the opposition right off the bat.
So its one of them things weve been
preaching in our pre-game talks, even
in the intermissions we need a little
bit more urgency and play with more
passion, said Robinson.
The message that was sent after the
game is that we need to move on, but at

the same time we cant just forget about
it and do the same thing. We have to
keep it fresh in our memory because we
want the guys to use this as motivation
for next weekend.
Beckley got two goals and Cody Willis added one in the loss.
The Kings will now travel to Stettler
on Nov. 21 (7:30 p.m.) before returning home to take on the High River
Flyers the following day (8 p.m.) at the
Strathmore Family Centre.

For four Strathmore and area 15-yearold midget hockey players, playing close
to home for the high-caliber minor midget Rockyview Raiders has been truly a
great experience in this young season.
Its pretty great playing on the Raiders, theyve got a great coaching staff
(and) a great group of guys. Its pretty
fun to get our own dressing room, said
Strathmore native Kaden Hanas.
He has really liked what the Alberta
Minor Midget Hockey League (AMMHL)
has to offer as far as competitiveness
goes with each team, and helping the
players with development to go to the
next level.
Its really competitive, great hockey,
he said. This is a stepping stone definitely and hopefully go on to play (with
the UFA Bisons) next year.
Hanas said his favorite moment so far
this season is playing in the Prospects

Cup, which took place this past weekend from Nov. 13-16 in Chestermere.
Its going good, we had a rough weekend last weekend, but its a fun time
playing in the Prospects Cup (with) a lot
of scouts here and a lot of teams, Hanas. Its a good option because if youre
not good enough to play midget doubleA, you can come here and develop then
possibly get there or play major.
Hanas currently has five goals and five
assists in 12 games.
Langdon native and Raider forward
Robert Butterwick thinks its a whole
different caliber of players in this league.
Its a big step from bantam doubleA last year, way faster, bigger people.
(There is) lots of experiences with the
fast teams, said Butterwick.
He enjoys being on the bus trips and
bonding with his teammates.
The most significant thing about playing in a high-end tournament such as
the Prospects Cup is that it can be a

learning experience for the players with
scouts being in the stands.
Its a little nerve wracking, but I mean
if you do your best, try you hardest, its
all you can do, he said.
Butterwick currently has four goals
and two assists through 10 games.
Strathmore native Scott Desserre believes its something special to play in
this league with other skilled 15-yearolds.
I think its a special opportunity to
compete against guys your own age,
you can really develop and work hard
to get midget triple-A or double-A, said
Desserre. I think my plays not too bad,
the team has been doing pretty well,
weve been struggling a bit lately but
hopefully we can use this tournament to
turn things around and get things rolling
again when the league comes back.
Desserre has two goals in 12 games.

the crease so far this season and it has
been a great experience for him so far.
Playing for the Raiders has been
great. Its way more competitive, shots
are harder, said Schiller. (The Prospects Cup) is fun, theres a lot of scouts
and we have a great group of guys. I
hope to keep winning, win the Sutter
Cup and get to the provincial final.
Schiller currently has a 3-1-2 record
with .888 save percentage.
Head coach Payden Grant is impressed with the impact that these players have made so far this season.
I think theyre all good players and
there is a reason why theyre all on this
team, said Grant. Nelson has been
good in net for us all year, I coached
Scott and Kaden last year and theyve
come a long way this year and playing
with way more confidence. Robert is an
energy player, theyve adjusted well and
are up to the pace of the league.
They bowed to the Calgary Rangers
4-3 in the quarterfinals of the Prospects
Cup.
The Raiders currently sit in second in
the AMMHL south division with a record
of 8-2-2.

the industry for more then

most everything in an inspection. They could not
stress enough how important an inspection can be to
a prospective home buyer.
A home inspection is an
examination of a propertys
condition, usually but not
always, performed in anticipation of the home sale,
said Lamont.
Lamont suggests that the
buyers should consider going through the government
in making sure they are getting a properly licensed inspector.
Make sure your investment is an informed decision by using a registered
home inspector licensed
through the Government of
Alberta who carries E &O
insurance and is bonded,
providing purchasers an
unbiased third party opinion, said Lamont.
All the home inspector
can do is go through the
home and provide recommendations for the buyer

once they do a thorough
three to four hour inspection.
We may provide the following: a pre-purchase inspection, new home warranty inspection, a pre-listing
check and an annual home
maintenance report, said
Lamont.
Inspectors are not employed to repair the house
but to give an idea to the
buyer as to what needs to

A home inspector is a
generalist, were not electricians, plumbers, or roofers
but we can certainly pick
up potential problems and
alert people that this may
not be something that you
need to deal with immediately but this is our observation and in this time
frame, itd be wise to have

The steps that are taken
by a home inspector are
purpose, scope and report.
Purpose: the inspection
is a visual observation of
the property to detect the
presence of home defects
and its a snapshot of the
condition of the home today at the time of inspec-
tion. Scope: is limited to

the accessible areas of the
property and is based on
the conditions of the property at the precise time and
date of the inspection, said
Lamont.
(Lastly),
the
report,
where clients are provided
with a written report of the
inspection companys visual
observations.
However, home inspectors are not repairmen, so if
there are any deficiencies in
the house then they suggest
getting a qualified expert to
provide a quote.
An inspection can affect
the purchase price of your
property. Most homes are
not perfect, every house has
issues, but few homes have
major issues, said Lamont.
However if a home does
have a major issue such as
a cracked foundation wall,
this should be looked by a
structural engineer.
Lamont would like to
also note that if there are
any obvious deficiencies,
this can affect the purchase
price and may affect home
insurance rates.

Rebels never give up!

The U14B Ice Rebels travelled to Lethbridge on Nov. 14-16 for
their first tournament of the season. It was a great weekend as
the girls came home after four games with a bronze medal won

Schiffner thrilled with rodeo season

Despite placing outside the Top 35 at the Professional Bull Riding (PBR) finals in Saskatoon
last weekend, Scott Schiffner is very thrilled with
what he was able to accomplish this rodeo season.
Schiffner was going into the PBR as the reigning champion, but it was just not his weekend
this time around.
I got bucked off both of my bulls up there so
it wasnt a very profitable weekend at all, said
Schiffner. Theyre just good bulls and thats the
whole thing in bull riding, you got to stay on for
eight seconds and I didnt do it.
He admits that the reality of bull riding is you
cant control how the animal is going to react in
the arena.
Theres lots of things in bull riding, its staying on. Its one of them things where everybody
thinks its simple, but youre competing against
a predictable live animal thats spreads the buck
and thats their job is to buck you off and sometimes its just not in the cards, said Schiffner.
Overall, Schiffner had a very successful year
with winning the Calgary Stampede and doing
well at other events.
It went good, the thing this year I was proud of
in pressure situations, I raised my level in Calgary,
winning $100,000 there and I had to dig deep at
the end of the year and make Canadian Finals. I
always like to do a little better at the Canadian
Finals, its my favorite place to be, said Schiffner.
He ended up placing third overall in the PBR
circuit at seasons end.

Wheatland Braves head coach Keith Klemmensen liked
what he saw from his team in a tightly contested 3-1 win over
the Taber Golden Suns on Nov. 14 in Gleichen.
Its one of those situations where you got a good result
and maybe not your best effort, but you still grew that game.
Sometimes you win a hockey game without your 100 per cent
best effort and you beat a good team that can show (our)
guys that we do have a good team, said Klemmensen. On the
other hand, I saw stuff that the effort level has fallen because
weve played some teams that havent been a challenge to
them. Its human nature that theyre going to get a way with
as little as possible.
He felt that the local double-A peewee team did keep pushing to produce more offence, but the effort was not there at
times in the game.
I never got the sense that the whole team was giving it a
100 per cent all the time. I had a couple guys, it was their best
game of the year, said Klemmensen.
Goal scorers were Bryce Benfield, Kage Yellowfly and Zach
Nicolls.
The Braves next game will be Nov. 22 (4:45 p.m.) at the
Strathmore Family Centre versus the Lacombe Rockets.

HELPING THOSE IN NEED

Recently, I came across a news item
about a pastor in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He had been issued a citation for
feeding the homeless on the streets
of the city. The city council passed an
ordinance the end of October that forbid the feeding of homeless individuals
and families in plain view.
Those who would care for the poor
and the homeless must do it out of
sight so as not to disturb, the local
population or the tourists who visit
the city. The offending pastor reacted
and using the social media posted the
actions of local authorities. He has
enlisted the support of two top lawyers
who will work pro-bono and refuses
to pay the fine that comes with the citation. When you read what I have just
shared you might be moved to suggest
that this would not happen here but I
would venture to disagree with you.
As a country, a province and as a
community, I believe we are moving in
this very direction. Most of the rhetoric
coming out of Ottawa suggests that
our country is now about the taxpayer and not the people.
All commentary is framed in the
context of the individual taxpayer as
opposed to the community or society.
The concessions offered by our
government are by and large directed
at those with more significant incomes
and resources. The poor and the
homeless are virtually ignored as we
roll out more and more resources for
those who have and ignore or reduce
our concern for those who have not.
I am asking here that we take more
seriously the tenets of the Christian

in speech after speech. I am asking
that we be wary of decisions made
for us in Ottawa and Edmonton, which
ignore the plight of those with fewer
material resources and re-assert
our commitment to caring for those
who have less than we do. I am not
suggesting that our council would
pass such a silly ordinance but I am
asking that we return provincially and
nationally to the way of our collective
past where we provided resources for
housing, where we sought in policy
and practice to address the needs of
the less fortunate.
I rejoice at the history of Strathmore
dealing with the plight of the homeless
and their ongoing efforts to address
affordable housing. However, please
remember as Christmas approaches
that we are producing more Christmas
hampers than ever, we have more
clients at our local food bank and more
families who are living on the edge
of poverty. In my part of the Christian
community, we hear the following from
our Holy Book.
It is from the Good News according
to Matthew Chapter 25:44-45. They
asked, when did we see you hungry
or thirsty or a stranger or needing
clothes or sick or in prison, and did not
help you? The Son of Man will reply,
I tell you the truth, whatever you did
not do for one of the least of these, you
did not do for me.
That is the way I see it today and
wanted to share my thoughts with you.

was nothing to be ashamed of.
The boys came into the tournament with an undefeated
match streak over the previous
two tournaments. They always
stayed humble but you could
definitely see and feel an optimism that this year just might
be the year we could win zone,
said Huntley. Although they
were disappointed in the loss,
they never let down. As I told
the boys, you didnt lose to
yourselves; you lost to a very
good team. They just ended up
with a few more points than us.
The most noticeable attribute
that was seen by the team was
their teamwork, as they never
gave up.
The biggest strength the
boys had that day was their
teamwork. There were several
moments where our backs were
against the wall and it was up
to the boys on the court, and
the other players cheering from
the bench, to pull themselves
through, said Huntley. There
were three key game-changing
moments that come to mind in
this tournament that, if handled
differently, would have saw our
team receiving a third or fourth
place medal. Instead, I was
privileged to observe a maturity
not often seen in junior high
sports.
Huntley admitted it was a real
honor to watch the progression
of the boys throughout the season.
The biggest strength of our
team this year was our team
spirit and our team personality, it really was the dream team
to coach. I didnt have a single

negative personality on the
team, everyone looked out for
and supported one another. It
was some of the most fun Ive
ever had coaching any team,
said Huntley.
There wasnt much that I
wasnt proud of for this team. If
I had to choose one particular
thing I was most proud of, Id
have to say their perseverance
during the zone tournament.
They hit several big roadblocks
that would have crumbled most
teams but these boys showed
their strength that day.
The girls team showed some
signs of what their capabilities were on the court, but still
needed to work on consistency.
They made the zones in
Brooks where they finished
third in their pool, but played
some tough teams and were
defeated early in the playoff
round.
It was a tough group of seven, very strong volleyball teams.
We finished third in our pool,
and were eliminated early in the
playoffs, but during the roundrobin, we forced many of our
best of three matches to three
sets, said coach Chris Iversen.
The girls played well in nearly every set they played, but we
just didnt consistently get the
break we needed on the scoreboard.
He was really impressed
with the teams hard work and
improvements made in every
match.
Overall, it was a very good
season. We saw big improvement in all of our players, from
our experienced veterans to our

rookie alternates, said Iversen.
My biggest goal as a coach is
to see players develop and improve, which is definitely what
happened this year.
He really liked the fact that
his team was able to still have
fun playing volleyball and really
being able create a bond.
Their ability to just have fun
and enjoy themselves playing
volleyball. We had numerous
timeouts during matches, where
we could laugh and joke, and
enjoy our time together as a
team, even when things werent
going our way, said Iversen.
After those disappointing
matches, where the players
were unhappy with a loss, they
were able to shake it off quickly, and not let it bother them,
and move on.
It seemed at times that the
girls did lack some consistency
and had to battle through a lot
of matches.
At every tournament this
year, they had one or two
matches, where they played
amazing, passers were passing
the ball accurately to our setters, making it easy for them to
make a nice set for our hitters
to make a great attack, just like
we had been working on all
week in practice, said Iversen.
Then in another match, not so
much. But that is the nature of
coaching a team of young people, inconsistency is part of the
game at this level.
Both teams will look to be
stronger and aggressive come
next season but otherwise they
had very successful seasons.

Senior Spartan girls volleyball coach Randy Moncks could
not be more proud of his teams
performance to end off the volleyball season at zones on Nov.
14-15 in Brooks.
At zones, there were two pools
of five but this time only the top
three teams advanced, where at
our home tournament four teams
advanced so there was less pres-
sure on the Spartans to make the

playoff round. We took Springbank, Holy Trinity from Okotoks,
and Canmore to three sets, but
each time lost the third set, said
Moncks.
Moncks decided to change up
his game plan by shifting some
stronger players up front to give
opponents a different look.
We changed our lineup
around so that some our stronger girls could hit in different
positions and we put one of our

to help block the oppositions offence, said Moncks. Overall, our
offence and defense was slightly
stronger. No matter how difficult
our opponents were this year the
Spartan senior girls always battled and gave their best effort.
Monck added that six Grade
12s will graduate this year and
next year they will probably be
bringing up eight new girls to rebuild the Spartan girls senior volleyball program.

The Strathmore High School junior
girls Spartan volleyball team saw an
improved compete level as the season went along and right through into
zones.
Our team was seeded as 8th in
the tournament and that is where we
placed at completion, said head coach
Carrie Westgard.
The team learned a lot from the
highly competitive games they played
(in zones), rallies were longer so they
improved their intensity and focus.
Westgard was really impressed with
how her team was capable of maintaining team spirit while showing glimpses
of their potential on the court.
The biggest strength of the team this
year is that they had massive team spirit, they work hard for each other. They
will continue to improve as they have
so much potential, said Westgard.
The improved athleticism by the players was something that got high praise
from their head coach.
We have many athletes on the team,
they learned rapidly throughout the
season and should be proud of the
substantial improvements they made in
their game. They represented SHS with
integrity and grace, they are wonderful ambassadors for our school, said
Westgard.
Meanwhile, the junior boys who
played as a senior team in exhibition
tournaments ended the year on a
high note as they won all but one set in
their gold medal winning performance
at zones.
Our team played extremely well,
we won the Junior Varsity Zone banner, beating the HTA Knights in the final. We played really good defense and
served very tough allowing us to score
points in transition, said head coach
Cole Hintz.
The strategy that the boys used was
working for them effectively throughout the tournament.
We did a good job of passing and
establishing an effective middle attack,
which gave our outside hitters an easier
block to hit against, said Hintz.
The team had a very successful season and kept getting better as they
played in every tournament.
We played up all year trying to find
difficult competitions so we could learn
the level of aggressiveness and efficiency we would need to be a high quality
team. We learned a lot and was able to
keep improving the entire season, said
Hintz.
He also added that most of the team
will be returning next year and will be
stronger and more athletic which will
hopefully lead to more success.
Susan passed away in the

Strathmore Hospital on November 12, 2104 after a short illness. Susan was born
near Swift Current, Saskatchewan and was the
second youngest of ten children. She moved to
Calgary in 1948 where she met her late husband,
Frank. They had one daughter. Susan was predeceased by her husband and all her brothers and
sisters. She is survived by her daughter, Phyllis
(Bill). She enjoyed baking and her cookies will be
greatly missed. At the request of the family, no funeral will be held. In lieu of flowers, and because
she always enjoyed having cats around, please
send donations directly to the Calgary Humane
Society (4455 110th AVE SE, Calgary, Alberta T2C

After the parade everyone can venture up to the Ag grounds for 6:30 pm where a group of
