Virtual or plastic?
1
A short but growing list of recording stars that includes Prince, Madonna, and Radiohead are willing to
depart from the control of the four multinational corporations that dominate the industry. The members of the British
rock band Radiohead said that they are going to sell their new album, at least initially, exclusively as a digital
download and allow fans to decide how much to pay for it, if anything.
5
The band also said they expected a conventional CD release of the album, the 10-song In Rainbows,
early next year, although Radiohead have not yet reached an agreement with the EMI Group, with whom they have a
contract. A number of other record companies seem to be interested in the rights to distribute the album, even
though the value of such a deal for a record company is reduced when the members of the band keep the digital
sales entirely to themselves. Extra profits could then be made by selling the old-fashioned plastic CD as a package,
with extra new songs and photographs, at a much higher price (about $50 per copy).
11
The bands digital pricing plan represents a break from the industry standard established by Apples iTunes
service, which generally sells individual songs for 99 cents apiece and complete albums for $10 to $12. The band
have never sold their recordings on iTunes because of their desire to sell their albums only in their full original
form. Early reaction suggests that listeners are ready to pay, but much less than they would do for a CD in stores.

Spain: a migration country

1
Emigration was a constant feature in Spain during the 20th century, with emigrants originally going
overseas to the Latin-American countries. Later, during the second half of the century, when northern and western
European countries began to employ foreign workers, Spanish emigration altered its direction. For many years, the
outward flow of migrants balanced the excess of workers, particularly in rural areas. However, the seventies and
eighties saw a large drop in emigration, aggravating Spains unemployment problems.
6
But there has been a significant change in the migratory tendencies during the last 20 years or so and
Spain, which for years was a traditional country of emigration, has at present become a new pole of attraction of
migration flows. The reasons for Spains transformation from an emigration country into an immigration one are
diverse and caused both by Spains domestic situation and socioeconomic and political developments abroad.
10
The countrys membership in the European Union and its relatively continuous economic growth have
made Spain an attractive destination.
12
Immigrants have helped increase the Spanish population by over 4 million; legislation has been modified
many times in order to keep pace with this situation. From the beginning, the focus has been on controlling the
massive arrival of immigrants and combating illegal migration, which represents a central problem for Spain.
15
Significant changes have taken place in this country, not only at the demographical level, and immigration
has become an important topic both as a social and a political issue in the public debate.

The high price of low-cost airlines

1
No plans yet for the weekend? Berlin-Madrid for 19 euros! Low-cost airlines are conquering the European
travel market with competitive prices, and the aeroplane is fast becoming an everyday means of transport. But this
has dramatic consequences for the environment as no other form of transport has such a damaging ecological effect
as the aeroplane.
5
The recent growth in air travel is above all due to the success of budget airlines. At first sight, they do not
seem to have a worse ecological effect than conventional airlines, thanks to near-full capacity usage. The root of
the problem lies in the acquisition of a new, wider type of customer through aggressive prices. A two-day
shopping trip to London or a relaxing weekend in Majorca would remain a luxury that few could afford without
these carriers.
10
So, for the moment, it is still the travellers individual responsibility to resist frequent flying. Those who
cannot, or will not, stop flying have the possibility to compensate for the negative effects of travelling by donating
money to climate protection projects. It is obvious that such voluntary initiatives will only be supported by a
minority of environmentally conscious European citizens and can represent no real or credible alternative to a
political solution. The coming months will show if EU states take the Kyoto protocol seriously and put a stop to
cheap flights which are so costly to the environment.

Graphic warnings on cigarette packets

1
Graphic images of the health consequences of smoking are to be shown on cigarette packets in Britain
from September this year. The pictures include a dead man on a steel mortuary table, patients wearing oxygen
masks in hospital, a baby in an incubator and a man with a large tumour below his chin with the words Smoking can
cause a slow and painful death.
5
The health secretary said the aim was to raise consciousness, help smokers to give up tobacco and reduce
smoking-related illnesses. He added that picture warnings are a vital step in reducing the number of people who
smoke. Smoking is still the highest cause of ill health and early death. Picture warnings, together with the introduction
of a law about smoke-free public areas and the Governments plans to raise the legal age of sale for tobacco
products, will potentially save thousands of lives; in addition, others will avoid the misery of watching family and
friends die prematurely from smoke-related illnesses.
11
A series of 15 images have been chosen following market research, public consultation and a vote on the
mosteffective warnings. These measures will help promote better awareness of the damage that smoking does, an
essential step towards reducing the number who start smoking.
14
According to the Cancer Research Institute, smoking accounts for 85% of lung cancers. Each year the
disease causes 33,500 deaths in the UK. They also state that international evidence shows that graphic picture
warnings lead to greater awareness of the risks associated with smoking and help encourage people to cut down or
quit.

Global warming
Global warming has emerged as the most serious environmental threat of the 21st century. Only by taking
action now can we ensure that future generations will not be put at risk (taken from a letter to the US President from
49 Nobel Prize winning scientists).
4
When carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide are released into the air, they cover the Earth, trapping
heat inside the atmosphere this is known as the greenhouse effect, and it is this that keeps our planet at a
temperature at which life can prosper. But the massive increase in the production of these and other greenhouse
gases since industrialisation has caused the effect to intensify.
8
The 1990s was the hottest decade on record. Over the course of the 20th century, average global
temperature rose by around 0.6C. Over the past two decades the Earth has been warming faster than at any point
in the last 1,000 years. It is now almost universally agreed that the major cause of this problem is the burning of
coal and oil.
12
Climate scientists predict that this ratio of change will have serious consequences. Although it is difficult to
judge how our weather systems will adapt to higher global temperatures, possible scenarios include an increase
in unexpected floods and prolonged dry periods. The melting of the polar ice caps is one of the most worrying
possibilities, causing sea levels to rise by more than 40cm by 2100.

Ultra-thin Barbie: girls potentially in danger

1
Two British universities claim Barbie could promote girls insecurity about their image. Barbie dolls, an icon
for many young girls, may contribute to eating disorders in adolescence, according to a new research. These dolls,
thinner than traditional shapes, make girls want to be unrealistically slim when they grow up.
4
This study is the first to identify body worries in such young children. It analyses the effects of images of
several dolls on almost 200 primary school girls aged five to eight. The girls saw different images of dolls, including
Barbie and Emme, a new doll whose body proportions represent a larger body shape; afterwards, the girls were
asked to choose figures that represented: a) their real body shape, b) the body shape they ideally desired and c)
their ideal body shape as an adult.
9
The study analysed the difference between the shape girls thought they had and the shape they wanted.
The results showed that girls aged five to six were more dissatisfied with their shape and wanted more extreme
thinness after seeing Barbie doll images than after seeing other pictures. For those aged six to seven, the negative
effects were stronger.
13
These results are very important and show that children can be influenced at a very early age. The
researchers say their findings suggest schools should educate their youngest children about the risks of being too
worried about having an ideally thin body shape. Such programmes need to make girls aware that the thin beauty
ideal is unachievable and unhealthy. In fact, less than one in 100,000 women has the body of the Barbie doll.

MAXIMISING CHILDREN
1
Are you enrolling your small children in a violin course? Do you somehow add ballet, drama, and judo to
football and English lessons? The great news is that this will all make your children do better in school! Well, it might
or it might not. It may turn them into exhausted, disciplined automatons or it may block their imaginations, and leave
them no time to themselves.
5
If only middle-class parents would stop trying to maximise their children! Children dont have to be
accomplished violinists or athletics champions or black-belt karate kids. Why cant they just have fun? Certain
enjoyable activities are very difficult to pick up as an adult, and these are worth learning when young.
8
Playing an instrument is one; skiing (if you can afford it) is another. But it is pointless to push children
where they dont want to go. And you wonder: do all these children really want to be stars, or is it their parents
ambition for them?
11
A childs chances of success in life are determined mainly by its innate ability. There is not much you can
do about that. Mozarts are born, not made. A certain amount of application helps, particularly in secondary school.
Beyond that, a happy, loving and accepting family providing emotional stability is about all children really need.

STOP SMOKING OR WE MAY NOT OPERATE ON YOU

1
Patients will have to try to give up the habit if they want to get treatment, such as knee replacement.
Posters with Those who dont, may not be treated are all over hospitals. The Health Service in Britain is millions of
pounds in debt and this strategy will help save money on care. Hospital managers say smokers are at greater risk of
complications when having operations, they take more time to recover, and they have longer and more expensive
stays in hospital.
6
Critics accuse them of putting finances before the health of patients, but the hospitals are giving an
opportunity to smokers, proposing that if they need surgery they must undergo therapy for three months in order to
get out of the habit. If they have made a strong effort to stop smoking but have failed, they may still get surgery, but if
it is believed that they have not tried hard enough, then they may not be operated on.
10
The National Health Service is following guidelines from the Government, which allows them to consider
patients lifestyles when deciding if a treatment would be effective. Smokers, however, say that they are being
discriminated against.
13
The pro-smoking pressure group Forest says: Smokers pay their taxes like everyone else, they have the
right to free healthcare. Last year, health authorities in Suffolk stopped obese people from having operations until
they tried to lose weight.

PLASTIC SURGERY: BEAUTY OR BEAST

1
Some psychologists are worried about the psychological impact on those who undergo drastic cosmetic
surgeryand also on those who don't and, consequently, may feel inadequate. Although radical transformations are
rare, some psychologists plan to investigate the surge in cosmetic procedures and whether these surgeries have any
lasting psychological consequences. The number of cosmetic operations increased by 44 percent from 2003 to 2004,
according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Plastic surgeons conducted a record 11.9 million
procedures last year, both non-surgical (like Botox) and surgical (like breast augmentation or liposuction).
7
How do such practices affect patients psychologically? Social workers have made a recent analysis of 37
studies on patients' psychological and psychosocial functioning before and after cosmetic surgery. It suggests
positive outcomes in patients, including improvements in body image and possibly a quality-of-life increase too. But
the same research published in April 2005 also found several elements of poor outcomes, especially for those
11 who hold unrealistic expectations or have a history of depression and anxiety. The researchers found that patients
who are dissatisfied with surgery may request repeat procedures or experience depression and adjustment
problems, social isolation, family problems, self-destructive behaviours and anger toward the surgeon and his or her
staff.

A NEW TAX ON RUBBISH

1
A new tax, known as payas-you-throw, in which British families will be charged for the amount of rubbish
they produce, is to be brought nationwide.
The Government thinks there must be a radical revision of the way in which rubbish is thrown away, otherwise
there is a real danger that city council taxes will have to rise and the environment will continue to suffer. In this sense,
the Environment Minister has said he would look sympathetically at this new system, which would encourage
recycling and make the polluter pay, as he is contributing to climate change.
7
According to figures published recently by a prestigious institute, Britain has the third worst recycling rate in
the European Union, after Greece and Portugal. So, the Local Government Association has threatened to increase
council tax bills if recycling doesnt improve. It has said that this tariff will be needed to cover EU fines.
10
As in Britain every family owns its waste container, there is a project to secretly fit thousands of bins with
microchips with a serial number identifying the home to which waste belongs. This is detected by a sensor on the
truck as the bins are lifted for emptying. The weight of the rubbish it contains is calculated by equipment on the truck.
13
This information is then transmitted to a central computer where it is recorded for its later use on household
waste bills.

CHILD EXPLOITATION
1
Dhiraj Kumar, who is 14 years old, works at a tea shop at Delhi's bus station. His 12-hour work shift begins
at 9 pm. He makes tea, washes pots, pans and glasses, and serves the customers. For his work, he is paid 50
rupees (a little less than one euro) a day. When a glass is stolen from the tea shop, he is held responsible. His family
lives 1,000km away, in the state of Bihar, and the small piece of land the family owns is unable to sustain everyone.
Dhirajs pay is crucial in the family's battle to survive.
6
Children under 14 are vulnerable to physical, mental and even sexual abuse. Their exploitation goes
unreported and unnoticed inside the closed confines of homes and food stalls. Parents say poverty forces them to
send their children, sometimes as young as five, to work in other people's homes and businesses.
9
An Indian government law banning children from working as domestic servants or in roadside food stalls
came into effect on 10 October, 2006. Anyone found exploiting children will face penalties, including imprisonment.
According to the authorities, the ban will affect 185,000 children working as domestic help and 70,000 who work in
roadside food stalls. But many people say the real number of exploited children could be as high as 20 million, and

THE BIG BOTTLE

1
In Spanish cities, at night, crowds of young people wander the streets in search of a party, meeting their
friends and stopping to drink. When a large mass of people get together, a party spontaneously breaks out. This
phenomenon, translated into English as booze-up or binge-drinking, is perceived by local governments as a social
problem because it is impossible to predict where it will take place and because drinkers are as young as 12.
5
In addition, now it has become fashionable to compete for the biggest national drinking party, as cities from
Mlaga to Madrid and Barcelona to Bilbao try to outdo one another by organizing the largest gathering. Word is
spread by e-mail and text messages, and teenagers crowd into city centres, armed with bottles of soft drinks
generously mixed with alcohol.
9
City councils are very cautious about calling in the police for fear that drunken youths will turn to violence.
Government has tried to introduce emergency legislation but this is unlikely to have much impact, because, across
Spain, regional authorities have set different minimum ages to buy alcohol.
12
Despite Spains reputation for civilised Mediterranean drinking habits, the big bottle leaves city centres full
of rubbish, and residents, who have been kept up all night, furious. Under-age drinkers claim that this way they can
enjoy a night out for as little as 6 euros a night, whereas bars are too expensive.

A LIFES AMBITION: TO CROSS THE BORDER

1
Until recently the main news about immigration in this part of the world focused on the boatloads of Africans
attempting to reach the shores of southern Spain. Lately, however, a new phenomenon has hit the headlines:
immigrants have been storming the borders between Morocco and the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla
massively.
5
The double three-metre-high barbed-wire fences that divide Spanish and Moroccan territories have not put
them off. Hundreds or even thousands of sub-Saharan Africans camp out in the woods near the border. They choose
their place and moment carefully according to the position of the Spanish and Moroccan guards, and use their
handmade ladders to scale the fences always after dark. If several hundreds attempt to get across, at least a few are
bound to succeed.
10
These men and women can go nowhere else because they have nothing to eat; they have no job and
many have no family left. Thats why they are going to try it again and again, says the president of a non-profit
organization that tries to provide aid for these immigrants. Meanwhile, the centres that run as temporary shelters for

DONT FORGET THE CLASSICS

1
Read the best books first, or you may not have a chance to read them at all. This seems good advice
nowadays since most students read just a few classics in high school. Their teachers, tired of pushing teenagers
through 19th century novels, long ago replaced traditional works with more reader-friendly texts. Consequently, we
have a generation of students who never heard of Odysseus or turned on the switch in Victor Frankenstein's
laboratory.
6
Students who are used to the pace of MTV and video games have less and less patience for slow-moving
plot and detailed, descriptive passages. In an attempt to reach this new audience, teachers brought contemporary
and multicultural literature into their classrooms. But there is the danger of forgetting literary criteria. Instead of
choosing books with literary meri t universal themes, rich language, complex characters teachers select simpler
stories with characters to whom they think their students can relate.
11
Hopefully, reading such high-interest, familiar stories would lead students to increasingly challenging
works. However, many teenagers never take the next step. Teenagers are hungry for stories that mirror their lives.
Yet students also need books that are windows to other worlds. We should not underestimate our students' ability to
make connections between Odysseus's heroic journey and their own personal odysseys.

APRIL FOOLS DAY!

1
In Spain, many people play tricks on December 28, Holy Innocents Day. In many other countries, jokes are
played on April 1April Fools Day. The reason seems to be that, up until the mid-sixteenth century, France
celebrated New Years Day on April 1, but in 1562 Pope Gregory XIII introduced a new calendar to the Christian
world, which changed the date of the New Year to January 1. At that time news travelled slowly and some people
continued to celebrate on April 1. These poor, misinformed people were referred to as "April Fools" and other people
played tricks on them.
7
Nowadays, it seems that new technologies provide fresh ways of playing tricks on April 1. The Internet has
given birth to a rise in popularity and proliferation of tricks and hoaxes. E-mail inboxes are bombarded with messages
warning of terrible viruses that cause users to delete important data from their computers, or of credit card cheats
that request personal information, including passwords and bank account numbers.
11
In August 2001 an e-mail containing a photo of a shark trying to attack a helicopter was received by e-mail

SEXISM IN LANGUAGE
1
When Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon in 1969 he uttered a memorable sentence: Thats one small
step for a man, one giant leap for mankind. If he had landed on the moon today, no doubt he would have said a
much more politically correct sentence: Thats one small step for a person, one giant leap for humankind. Less
poetic but certainly more literally representative of the whole of the human race!
5
Language tends to use male pronouns automatically whenever the sex of the person is not known: Every
student must bring his own calculator. This is a sexist use of language, which often suggests an inherent male
dominance in many fields of life, and can reinforce the idea of female inferiority.
8
There is a tendency to associate certain jobs with men or women. For instance, A director must do his best
for his company, but A nurse must treat her patients with kindness. In addition, job names often include reference
to the sex of the person: Im meeting a group of businessmen next Friday, or The housemaid must clean this. The
use of such words tends to emphasise the idea that it is not normal for women to be in professional, highly-paid,
technical or manual jobs, and that it is not natural for a man to work in such a caring (and generally poorly-paid) role
as that of a nurse.
a) ANSWER QUESTIONS 1-2 ACCORDING TO THE INFORMATION GIVEN IN THE TEXT. USE YOUR OWN

THE ENGLAND PATIENT

1
The England football manager, Sven-Gran Eriksson, believes that modern football matches are not won
on the ground, but inside the players' minds. This film examines not just how Eriksson got inside his players' brains,
but how he is now starting a revolution in English football thinking.
4
Eriksson's plan has two critical elements: to eliminate the harmful effects of the fear of failure from the
minds of the England players, and to encourage them to train mentally as well as physically to reach the highest
levels of performance.
7
Psychologists from some of Britain's most prestigious universities believe anxiety and the fear of failure can
make top professionals perform like amateurs. Medical surveys show that people use different parts of the brain to
perform actions which they are learning and those which are instinctive. If the brain goes back to its learning mode,
that 89th minute penalty kick goes right over the bar.
11
Eriksson has another psychological tactic: as he is not there on the field, he relies on cultural architects:
players whose thinking is so close to their managers that they obey him without even realising they are doing so.
The captain, David Beckham, is clearly one of these architects.
14
Sports psychology cannot predict whether England will win the World Cup. However, it does show that
England is going into a major competition with an unprecedented degree of psychological preparedness.

SMOKING IN PUBS?
1
The Government is going to forbid smoking in all pubs under new proposals to protect drinkers and bar
staff from passive smoking. The Cabinet has given up plans to make an exception with pubs that do not serve food,
and is preparing to allow pubs to have separate smoking rooms. Similarly, Patricia Hewitt, the Secretary of State
for Health, is examining plans to allow a smoking-carriage option (smoking is banned on almost all British trains).
5
It would keep the bar smoke-free, protect staff, but permit smokers to light up in a separate area.
The Government had been worried about being accused of discriminating against smokers, particularly
working-class Labour voters. The plan for a total prohibition was going to be discussed at a cabinet meeting this
week but the deliberation has been postponed after last-minute doubts. Ms Hewitt is said to support a full
prohibition but wants to find a practical solution acceptable to the whole Cabinet. Ministerial supporters of a
complete ban believe that forbidding smoking in the workplace would help addicts to give up their habit.
11
Others in Government think they would be accused of operating an overprotective state if they prohibited

CLIMATE CHANGE
1
According to the UN, climate change will probably transform the way most people live. However, a group
of economists, including three Nobel Prize winners, says this is the least important of the world's immediate
problems.
4
The team of six American and two other economists concluded it is not worth spending money on
climate change because the effects were expected to happen in a far future. They recommended that money
should be spent on HIV/Aids, water and free trade. But they were immediately accused by international
development and environment groups of "understanding nothing about the real world". These recommendations,
which mainly throw doubts on the idea that there will be a serious climate change in a near future, have been very
well received by followers of the free market round the world. On the contrary, the experts conclusions have been
attacked by many scientists.
11
The leader of this group of economists, Professor Ludgrum, told the journalists they were what he called
the "Real Madrid" team of "galactica" economists. "We are here to reach consensus about how to help the world's
poor," he said. "We are economists, and not politicians; we have long, valuable experience in giving priority to
basic things, and moreover we are impartial.

MARRIED OR SINGLE?
1
The health benefits of being married are so large that single men are at greater risk of dying than
smokers, says a study. This study looked at comparative risks over a seven year period but experts warned that
the lifetime risks of smoking were much higher. Scientists have frequently found that married men and women tend
to be in better health than their single counterparts. This is partly because of the "social support" of having a wife or
husband and perhaps because both single men and women have a worse lifestyle and no-one to take care of them.
6
Moreover, the latest study by researchers at the University of Limerick showed that, even when the effects
of smoking, drinking and other poor lifestyles were taken into account, married men had a much lower risk of death.
Professor Martin Smith, who led the research, suggested that male smokers should get married as soon as possible
to avoid the risk. He said: "It is clear that a ring of gold, rather than money, is what keeps people alive."
10
However, while over a seven year period, the risks of smoking compared to single life are similar, over a
lifetime period the risks of smoking are much higher. Scientists think a long-term smoker has a one in two chance of
dying prematurely.

THE GLOBAL VILLAGE

1
In Aguaviva, a remote village in Aragn, significant details suggest that life here is not typical. To begin
with, the size of classes in the local school: the number of students per class is considerably higher here than in
other small villages. Very few places as far from big cities as Aguaviva can pride on such a substantial
attendance. This happens when many schools in the small villages of deep Spain close every year, anticipating
the death of communities with a history that can be traced back to the Middle Ages.
6
In Aguaviva, another remarkable abnormality can be detected in the childrens voices: Uruguayanaccented
Spanish can be heard, as well as Romanian. Foreigners now make up nearly half of all the pupils. They are all new
arrivals. According to the schools headmistress, At the beginning, the villagers thought it was just
another of those bright ideas the mayor has.
10
The idea that occurred to Aguavivas mayor is simple: fight the danger of extinction by importing
children. Foreign families with at least two children of school age can apply for a social package, which includes a
job and a house, as long as they promise to live there for at least five years. So far ten families, carefully
selected from thousands of applicants, have emigrated to Aguaviva.

YELLOW JOURNALISM
1
Yellow journalism is a type of journalism in which sensationalism triumphs over facts. Some journalists
employ colourful language and exaggeration to make a dull, dry story more exciting; sometimes facts are not
carefully checked, and even entire incidents are falsified. Human interest stories, accounts of murders, scandals
and gossip are habitually covered by the yellow press, which developed in the 19th century, especially in the United
States.
6
Two early examples of yellow newspapers were the New York World and the New York Journal American,
published by magnates Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, respectively. They used a populist approach to
political and social issues, and competed with each other with attractive illustrations, articles by talented writers, and
cartoons (one of these, called The Yellow Kid, gave the journals their nickname). These papers had large
circulations and financial success; they became models for the popular press, and a powerful influence on public
opinion.
12
The Spanish/American War of 1898, for example, was preceded by intense campaigns in the yellow press
encouraging the U.S. publics patriotism and sympathy for Cuban rebels. Sensational anti-Spanish stories were
published distorting the news. Hearst is said to have told his reporters in Cuba, when they found the situation
peaceful: You supply the pictures, and Ill supply the war.

HOME ALONE
1
With marriage apparently in trouble, so many single-parent families and people living alone ready to
dominate the country, Britain is currently going through one of the most dramatic social changes in its entire
history. This is one more example of globalization, and many other countries around the world seem to be
accompanying Britain in the same process.
5
The statistics are shocking. Since 1961, the number of UK homes occupied by one person has risen
from 10 to 30 per cent, with predictions of 40 per cent for the year 2010. There are other fundamental social
changes behind Britains single-household explosion. The increasing independence of the working woman, more
orientated to her career than to personal relationships, has been essential. The prototypical Bridget Jones,
thirtysomething, single, and in search of a man, is becoming a little old-fashioned.
10
These changing social attitudes and the higher divorce and separation figures are the causes of the
growing numbers of single parents. More and more women, both in the UK and the USA, no longer think it
necessary to have a man around to have a child. Such radical social changes inevitably have their side effects,
which are often as interesting as the changes themselves. Obsession with work seem s to have provoked a
boom in online agencies for making friends.

MOBILE PHONES

10

1
Mobile phones are not a luxury item anymore. While they have improved peoples lives, they have some
drawbacks and we need to be careful about when and where they should be used. Admittedly, they facilitate
communication with other people anywhere at any time. Parents feel more relaxed knowing their children can get in
touch with them immediately if they need help, and emergency services can be called without delay when there has
been an accident. Advanced features such as e-mail services and image messaging are packed into extremely light
and tiny models that fit into your pocket.
7
Yet mobile phones can be a serious threat to health, for children in particular. Experts warn that the
radiation of this type of phones can cause headaches and affect your memory in a negative way, although this has
not been proved convincingly. What is more, people who use a mobile phone while driving constitute a danger to
others and to themselves and sometimes have had fatal accidents.
11
Besides this, what for many people is a useful device can be a nuisance for others, who are always
complaining about the constant ringing tones in public places. Some people even claim that mobile phones should
carry health warnings as packets of cigarettes do.

WEB PIRATES

10

1
Internet users who distribute movies before they are sold in shops could face up to five years in prison under a
proposed USA bill, that is to say, a plan for a new law. Video recording of movies in cinemas would also be prohibited.
Those supporting the proposal say unauthorised copying costs film-makers an estimated $3 billion in lost sales.
4
The Motion Picture Association of America has tried to restrict the distribution of DVD previews to judges in film
festivals. Illegal copies of movies end up being sold on street corners and made available through online networks just
after they are shown in cinemas for the first time. This is due to audience members entering cameras into theatres and
recording the film. If the bill becomes law, the maximum sentence for such practices will be five years plus financial
damages.
9
Unauthorised video recording in cinemas is currently a crime in four states and the District of Columbia but it is
legal in other states. The person who puts online copyrighted material which is not legally available to the public should
be penalized, said California Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein. The law proposal has received strong support from
the movie and music industries. They also hope to have permission to explore personal computers to search for illegal
material.

SMOKING IN ASIA

10

1
While tobacco companies face restrictions in Europe and USA, tobacco consumption in many Asian countries is
on the increase. Smoking American or European cigarettes is seen as fashionable. A few Asian governments have followed
the example of Western nations: tobacco advertising on television and radio has been forbidden. However, the tobacco
companies still find ways to get their message to the people of these extremely populated countries.
5
While adult males have been the most common smokers in Asia, advertising aimed particularly at women and
young people is trying to change that. Growing numbers of Asian women see smoking as a sign of their liberation. The
multinational tobacco companies say that they do not intend to promote smoking among non-smokers in Asia. Instead, they
say that they want Asian smokers to change their favourite kind of cigarettes. The evidence suggests the opposite,
however. It was precisely in Hong Kong, where few women smoked, that the American company S&M introduced their
Victoria Slims, a cigarette brand aimed at women.
11
Doctors and scientists are concerned about how smoking will affect the health of the Asian people. Scientists
estimate that because of the rising tobacco consumption in Asia, the annual worldwide number of deaths due to tobacco will
triple over the next two or three decades.

NEXT STOP: MARS

1
People have been walking on the surface of Mars for more than a century, in fantasy. Now, however, the
possibility is so real that many people think the question is not whether humans will go to Mars, but when they will go,
how they will get there and who will go first.
4
Although there is growing agreement that reaching Mars will be some kind of multinational effort, a
prosperous nation, like the United States, seems capable of such an achievement by itself. For the US it is a political
priority. The cost of the project has been estimated at $60 billion, about double the price of the Apollo Moon project.
7
Of all the other planets in the solar system, Mars is the most like Earth. With about half the Earth's
diameter, with one third of the gravity and only one percent of the atmosphere, space vehicles have found that Mars
hides an important amount of water under its surface and in its frozen poles. While Venus is closer, with an average
temperature of about 850 degrees, it is hostile.
11
From the presence of water and a relatively moderate climate comes another powerful attraction. The

1
A hot shower and a new wife helped two astronauts come down to earth Thursday after six months in orbit. Russian
cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko and U.S. astronaut Edward Lu landed in Kazakhstan after an unproblematic flight from the
International Space Station. The crew, accompanied by Spaniard Pedro Duque, who was on a one-week mission, arrived as
planned.
5
Lu said the exciting life on the 16-nation orbital platform had amply compensated for not enjoying common comforts.
"It's a small price to pay not to be able to eat your favorite food or take a shower if you have the opportunity to live and work in
space," he told a news conference. "But that being said, that first hot shower felt really good."
8
Having married his fiance Ekaterina Dmitriev in August via a satellite video link from space, Malenchenko went
straight into married life enthusiastically. "Life continues on earth and we've got lots of plans," he said.
10
The astronauts said they had been able to keep in touch with their families from the station via e-mail and video
telephone. "I missed my family and fiance, but we had very good communications on board and we were able to talk," said Lu.

TRAFFIC IN LONDON

10

1
When cars first replaced horses in London, everyone was pleased. Thank goodness, the streets would no
longer be full of smelly excrements. But Londoners have changed their minds about cars since then. In February
2003, in fact, the city introduced a plan to cut traffic and make it a nicer place to live in. All motorists coming into the
capital between 7.00 a.m. and 6.30 p.m. have to pay a 5 admission fee.
5
The success of this system is highly unexpected. It was introduced by the Mayor, Ken Livingstone, in the
face of opposition from business leaders, politicians, and a lot of people who just love their cars. Business leaders
claimed that their companies would suffer, while politicians said it would unfairly penalise various groups. Even the
Government took an attitude of wait and see. Against predictions, private traffic is now down by 20 per cent, while
fees and fines provide 130 million each year for improving public transport.
10
In order to sell this plan to the public, you cannot just introduce it, you have to get people to accept it. If you
ask motorists directly, they say no, but if you put it in a package with a reduction in the price of petrol, or in a package
including better roads and better public transport, a majority of motorists will support it.

NON-SEXIST LANGUAGE
1
English, like most languages, is androcentric, or sexist. A preoccupation with making the language more
inclusive began in the 1950s and 1960s, when feminists started analysing sexist language in English. With women
joining the workforce and entering the professions, people found it harder to assume that a doctor was a man, or a
nurse was a woman.
5
The 1975 Sex Discrimination Act made it illegal to advertise jobs as specifically for men or for women.
Personnel departments had to find new words for many which were too specific, like fireman or policeman.
However, it wasnt till the 1980s that institutions such as universities and the Church started to eliminate sexist
language from their documents; but they found it difficult to find a replacement for the male pronoun He when
referring to God.
10
In 1995 a new inclusive version of the New Testament and Psalms was published in the United States. In
that version, the Lords Prayer begins Our Father-Mother in heaven, and Jesus is called the Human One rather
than Son of Man. If some of these cases may seem extreme, then consider the case of Ellen Cooperman, who
fought a year-long legal battle for the right to change her name to Cooperperson. She won.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

1
Inside the family there is a historical tradition ignoring violence. Abuse by a male relative is the most
general form of violence against women. This abuse is directed at women who are wives or partners, and who are
classified by society as male property. According to a survey, between one quarter and one third of women from
different countries report physical abuse within their families, and even more report emotional or psychological
abuse. This is a large number, especially when one considers that many incidences of domestic violence are often
silenced.
7
For women, there is a greater risk for violence in the home than anywhere else. Both physical violence and
intimidation result in health problems. By repeated violations of their physical and mental autonomy, basic human
rights are taken away from women.
10
Domestic violence against women must be perceived as a global problem rather than a private matter. It
must receive appropriate attention from the international community as an issue affecting womens health and their
ability to participate fully in society.

ENERGY DRINKS
1
Recent events in Australia suggest that energy drinks in excess may be dangerous. Last Spring a
student who had drunk eleven cans of an energy drink robbed a supermarket armed with a knife. According to
his lawyer, this student was suffering from "caffeinism," that is, an unusual condition of excitement,
sleeplessness, agitation, and confused thought and speech, as a result of the consumption of high levels of
5
caffeine. The judge did not quite accept this defence, but he accepted that energy drinks may have
influenced the boy's behaviour.
7
This is not the first incident concerning energy drinks. In Sweden, there have been warnings about
mixing them with alcohol or drinking after exercise, when three people died shortly after having an energy
drink.
10
In Ireland, a 19-year-old man died suddenly after he had drunk three cans of it, and the matter is still under
investigation. The company insists that there is nothing dangerous in its product, and that it increases alertness,
concentration, and endurance. But experts do not agree: "Energy drinks are high in sugar and may increase
alertness, but there is no evidence to show that they are better than a cup of coffee."

VILLAGE WELCOMES VAMPIRE

The residents of a North Yorkshire town are stocking up with garlic and crucifixes after a real-life Dracula

Stokers classic novel. Vlad Dracula Prince Kretzulesco, the last living member of the clan, is considering settling in
Whitby.
5
He currently lives in Castle Dracula, in eastern Germany. But Prince Kretzulesco indicated he would be
delighted to return to the town where the terrifying legend began. He said: To visit the place where Mr Stoker wrote
the book would be wonderful. I know a little of Whitby and my familys connection with the town, and if I were
welcome, maybe I could go there and look for a place to live.
9
Prince Kretzulesco, an antique dealer, is anxious to leave Germany after numerous attacks and death
threats from neo-Nazis. He said: The British are good to foreigners and have liberal attitudes no matter if you are
black, green or lilac. If anyone offered me their castle, I would jump at the opportunity.

VIOLENCE AND ENTERTAINMENT

10

1
Most people think that instinct disappeared out of the human lifestyle as civilization began. This, however,
is not in accordance with our natural tendency to violence. Violence could be associated with instinct, so there is no
reason in a civilized world for violence. In order to compensate for this lack of violence, people become involved in
dangerous activities. They watch action films, they read adventure books, etc. But what are the effects of violence in
entertainment?
6
It is commonly thought that people watching violent films get excited and might want to perform violent acts
in real life. The results of a test on two groups of children was that those who had played Street Fighter behaved
more aggressively than the ones playing a peaceful video game. In this respect one could say that the influence is
negative.
10
But there is another, less common explanation regarding the lost human instinct of violence: we have to
find a way to express this need. In this sense, the influence of violence in films would be positive, because it would
satisfy our need for violence. Watching them gives viewers satisfaction, and so they do not have to express their
urge for violence in real life.

The worlds oldest woman according to the Guinness Book of Records, who attributed her long life to a
daily whisky, died in a British nursing home on Thursday, six days before her 115th birthday. Eva Morris died at the
Autumn House home in the town of Stone in the English Midlands. Eva died peacefully in her sleep, a
spokesperson at the home said. We are very privileged to have nursed her for the last eight years of her life.
5
She was a grand old lady. Eva Morris, a former domestic servant who was widowed in the 1930s, was
said by friends to enjoy the occasional cigarette and to have ridden a bicycle.
7
The Guinness Book of Records said it could not yet confirm who would succeed Morris as the worlds
oldest woman because her death might encourage several candidates. A Dominican woman says she is 125 years
old, but does not have the documents to prove it, a Guinness spokesperson said. We dont doubt that she is 125
years old, but we need to be able to verify it, the spokesperson continued. She is gathering the evidence so we

PEACE AND SILENCE

10

1
Visitors who leave behind the city centre of Charleston, South Carolina, and drive only 30 miles south, may
come upon the monastery of Our Lady of Mepkin. Twenty-eight monks live at Mepkin Abbey, following the same
routine established in France 900 years ago: praying, reading the Bible, and working.
4
Monasteries and spiritual centres throughout the United States find that demand for temporary accommodation
is increasing. More and more visitors come to this peaceful abbey every day, men and women who are tired of the
fast pace of life and work in 21st-century America.
7
These people usually stay in the abbey between one and six days. Most come for the silence, explains one of
the monks. They pray with the monks (attending the first service of the day, at 3.20 in the morning, if they wish),
observe the same silence as the monks, eat the same vegetarian food.
10 The abbeys guest rooms, most with private baths, are full much of the time, and rooms for the weekend are
booked for the next six months. The monks hope that their visitors will find peace, joy and perspective on life.
