Maharaj Sahab CHILDHOOD

Maharaj Sahab was born in Piyari Kalan, Kabir Chaura, Varanasi on Thursday, the 28th March, 1861. It
would be interesting to note that in the same year on Basant day, Huzur Soamiji Maharaj started open
satsang upon the repeated prayers of Huzur Maharaj and other premi Satsangis.
Maharaj Sahabs childhood name was Brahma Shankar Mishra. But His family members used to call Him
as MUNUA/MANUA.
He was born in a highly respectable and well educated Brahmin family. His father Pandit Ramjasan
Mishra, accepted, without any fear or opposition from the people of his cast, accepted a famous Muslim
faqir of Patna as his Guru. Pandit Ji was a Professor of Sanskrit at the Queens college, Varanasi.
Maharaj Sahab had 3 brothers Pt. Lakshmi Shankar, Pt. Uma Shankar and Pt. Rama Shankar and one
sister Smt. Maheswari Devi. Maharaj Sahab was the youngest of all. All the brothers except Pt.
Umashankar were devoted Satsangis of Huzur Maharaj.
Pt. Lakshmi Shankar ji was a professor in Queens college, Varanasi and later on became Inspector of
Schools. He also owned a printing press called CHANDRA PRABHA PRESS Co.Ltd. It is in this press only
the early literature of Radhasoami faith during the times of Huzur Maharaj and Maharaj Saheb got
published.
Pt. Uma Shankar Ji was a Judge and he was not a satsangi but his wife was a devoted satsangi of both
Huzur Maharaj and Maharaj Sahab.
Pt. Rama Shankat Ji was a collector as well as Dist. Magistrate.
All the brothers were well built and courageous.
We all know that Maharaj Sahebs sister Smt. Mahewari Devi Ji was installed as fourth Guru of
Soamibagh Group.
Maharaj Sahebs marriage
He was married to Smt Naiyan Ji Saheba at an early age of 9+ years. She was 9 years by the time of
marriage and Maharaj Saheb was 9 years 6 months. The family of Maharaj Saheb used to call her Nai
Bahu and in benaras dialect it was transformed as Naiyan and gradually into Naiyanji.
She was very much devoted to Huzur Maharaj and Huzur Maharaj gave her paramarthi name Shabd
Pyari.
I want to quite a very interesting story about Naiyanji sahib:
Once Naiyanji Saheba wanted to purchase a garland to Huzur Maharaj while performing Aarathi. There
was a lady flower seller who used to sell flower garlands at Huzur Maharajs place. That day only one
garland was left with her and many want to purchase for Huzur Maharaj. Nayanji asked the lady flower
seller for that last garland and she demanded Nayanjis golden bangle as price for that flower garland.

Nayanji happily offered her golden bangle in exchange of the flower garland. Later on when Huzur
Maharaj came to learn about this, he called that flower seller and scolded her.
Then the flower seller returned that bangle to Nayanji Saheba and asked for forgiveness. Then Nayanji
Saheba said A gold bangle is nothing before a flower garland accepted by Huzur Maharaj. You might
have made thousands of such garlands which were offered to Huzur Maharaj. So what if you have been
paid for one. It is but an offering at Huzur Maharajs holy feet.
WahWhat a maturity and spiritual understanding of Holy Mother!!! Great
It is also interesting to note here that once Nayanji Saheba prayed Huzur Maharaj to deliver a discourse
and Huzur replied Dont worry, you will have discourses at your own house.
Maharaj Sahab was tall and sturdy and had a fair complexion. In his childhood he was fond of playing
games, flying kites and pigeons. He paid much attention to body building and physical exercises. It was
said that the bad people and even some policemen of kasha feared him. Once Maharaj Sahab saw a
person teasing a lady in a theater. Then he instantly got up and catch hold of that teaser and pushed
him out of the theater. Such was his temperament during his youth. He used to bring down an animal or
bird with every shot he fired. Later on He gaveup Hunting by considering it as a bad practice.
He was a good musician and played Sitar.
He passed B.A with Sanskrit, English Literature and Physics as subjects and took M.A degree in English
literature in 1884.He joined Bareilly College as a teacher.
It would be interesting to note here that Maharaj Saheb had a childhood friend Babu Madho Prasad
Sinha (grandson of Soamiji Maharajs sister) more popularly known as Babuji Maharaj who succeeded
Smt. Maheswari Dei as 5th satguru of Soamibagh satsang. Both Maharaj Saheb and Babuji Sahab were
very good friends. It was through Babuji Maharaj, Maharaj Sahab came to satsang of Huzur Maharaj.
It was during the time of Huzur Maharaj, Sarbachan prose was printed and published for the first time.
Maharaj Saheb got a copy of this book from Babuji Sahab and after reading this book a phenomenal
effect took place on Maharaj Sahab which is evident from the following letter which he wrote to Babuji
Maharaj in 1885:

THE FIRST MEETING OF MAHARAJ SAHAB AND HUZUR MAHARAJ FOLLOWED BY HIS INITIATION:
On 24th Nov 1885, Huzur Maharaj wrote to Babuji Maharaj and informed him that He would visit
Benaras on official trip at 9:30 AM on 26th November. Maharaj Sahab reached Benars on hearing the
news of Huzur Maharajs official tour.
The whole night Maharaj Sahab was busy in cleaning and decorating the bunglow arranged for Huzur
Maharaj s stay.
Next morning (26-Nov-1885) Maharaj Sahab and Babuji Sahab took a Phaeton to reach the railway
station. Maharaj Sahab stood leaning against a lamp post waiting for the train to arrive. The train arrived
and came to a halt. Huzur Maharaj was standing at the door of His compartment. No sooner, Maharaj
Sahab had a glimpse of Darshan of Huzur Maharaj, then His surat was so stongly withdrawn and He was
about to fall but His friend Babuji Sahab lent Him support. Maharaj Sahab stood leaning against the lamp
post.
Darshan Karat Pind Sudhi Bhooli, Phir Ghar Bahar Sudhi Kya Aaye
Huzur Maharaj accompanied by Babuji Sahab came out of the station, took His seat in the Phaeton and
then asked Babuji to bring his friend Maharaj Sahab. Maharaj Sahab was standing as before leaning
against the lamp post and withdrawn within Himself. Then Huzur Maharaj made Maharaj Sahab to sit
next to Him in the Phaeton and arrived to their place of stay.
After that Huzur Maharaj delivered a long discourse and then initiated Maharaj Sahab into Radhasoami
faith and gave the spiritual name PREM ANAND.
