Figure B 1 shows a motor car of mass 1000kg stands at a height of 20 m


on an incline of 1 in 10. The hand-brake is released and the car runs down
the incline.

a) Determine the potential energy at top of the incline.


b) If the frictional resistance to the motion of the car runs down the
incline is 50 N, determine the work done against the friction.
c) Determine the speed after travelling 200 m
d) If the frictional resistance is now negligible (i.e. F=O), by referring to
Question Bl(c), state the change of speed if the car mass is now increased
to 2000kg.

A weight of 80 N is suspended by two cords at D and E as shown in


Figure B2a. The lengths of OD and OE are 1 m and 2 m respectively
at right angle to each other.

Determine the tension of the two cords P and Q either by analytical

A simple machine lifts a mass of 300 kg through a height of 4 m in 5


seconds. The effort applied to the machine is 600 N and move through a
