My tribute to the man who brought

NYC its Christmas tree By Richard Mabey Jr.
Dad and I would often spend
hours studying together at the
dining room table of our old
family homestead. I would be
doing my homework as Dad
would be doing paperwork for
scouts or routing a big trip, such
as his annual trip from Maine to
New York City to bring Manhattan their big Christmas Tree

y father taught me
many great lessons.
There were three
important elements of life that
I learned from my father;
patience, faith and love. My
father held a great deal of love
in his heart for my mom, my sister, and I. He dearly loved his
parents, sister, and seven brothers. He held a great love in his
heart for America, Lincoln
Park, the scouting movement,

his church, and his work. In

1960 Dad began working as a

long-distance truck driver for

Main Trucking and Rigging, in

Elmwood Park. He worked

there for nearly 30 years, retircontinued on page 20

How many millionaires do you know who became wealthy

by investing in savings accounts? I rest my case.
Robert G. Allen
By Mark Charnet

nteresting when you ponder

this phrase for a moment
isnt it? Stated differently,
unless their wealth was inherited, no one became financially
independent without assuming
some form of risk with their
capital during their lifetime.
Whether investing in the stock
market, real estate or a business,
there was a risk requirement
necessary to achieve greater
than normal returns required to
become a millionaire. But,
what about the consequences
of taking that risk? Can you
afford the risk of losing your
hard earned capital? I ask, Can
you afford not to invest with a
greater degree of risk to receive
the potential for a greater
return?
Readers, let me bring you
back to the first rule of financial
planning and wealth building:
The rule of 72! This rule sim-

ply tells you at a given rate of

return how long it will take to
double your money. By dividing
the rate of return into the number 72, the revealing number is
how many years it will take the
deposit to double. At a 1%
interest rate an investment
made today will double in 72
years. At 6% the doubling period is reduced to 12 years and
10% equates to 7.2 years. The
reverse is also true. Money borrowed at a 10% rate of interest
will double the debt in 7.2 years
if no payments are made.
Substituting 115 for 72 in our
equation, will tell you how
many years it will take to triple
your money.
Let me ask you to further
ponder on this question:
Assuming you will need
$50,000 annually from your
portfolio during your retirement years to supplement

Social Security and a 5% withdrawal rate, 20 years from

today. Starting with nothing
down, how much will you have
to save each month for the next
20 years to accumulate the $1
million goal necessary to produce the $50,000 in annual
retirement income if you are
able to receive a 4% annual
rate of return on your money
each year? The answer is
$2,726. Most people cannot
afford to devote that much to a
retirement plan and still pay
their monthly mortgage, so lets
take a bit more risk to achieve a
hypothetical 8% return. The
monthly requirement falls to
$1,697 which, is still a hefty
requirement for most. But, if
you decide to postpone your
retirement for another 5 years
and can achieve the same 8%
annual return, the monthly
requirement falls to only

$1,051. The investor that

would be lucky enough to
achieve a 12% compounded
annual rate of return would
need to invest only $532 per
month to achieve the same
$1,000,000 goal in 25 years.
Our conversation doesnt
take into account, adjusted
for inflation, what will
$1,000,000 be worth in 25 years
and how much more difficult it
would be to accumulate a portfolio to produce $50,000 in
2014 dollars, so Ill tell you. A
3% annual inflation rate would
devalue our $1,000,000 goal to
be worth only $467,000 in
2014 dollars, so basically speaking, your required investment
would double to create a sum
that is twice as much to give
you the equivalent of a $50,000
annual
income
today.
Unfortunately, however, inflation will not be finished in 25
years, so the annual $50,000
income will need to be
increased as well in order to
have the same purchasing
power. This poses a very interesting proposition that even
though in retirement your portfolio must produce income, it
cannot do so at the expense of
growth. The portfolio must
grow and produce income
simultaneously! Do you know
how to do this? Can it be done?
If so, can one guarantee* success, meaning providing an
income that increases over the
retirement years that will never
cease for husband and wife,

even though the principal

might become exhausted due to
their longevity and successive increasing withdrawals?
Answer is, yes and in my opinion should be examined by
every reader of this column.
Lets go back to the accumulation years for a moment.
Though there are no guarantees to secure an 8 or a 12% rate
of return, might one guarantee*
a somewhat lesser rate of return
yet be positioned for greater
possibilities, simultaneously,
when the stock market has a
stupendous month or year?
That answer is also yes and
needs to be explored by those
people who want to enjoy a
guaranteed* retirement income
that will never be reduced or
cease until both husband and
wife are gone. Further enhancements are possible that may
guarantee a death benefit to
children and grandchildren
when the parents are no longer
here.
Regardless of your investment preferences, it is universally understood that fixed
principal, interest only generating savings vehicles, especially
at todays rates, cannot build a
portfolio that in the future will
sustain a couple until death.
Proactive financial behavior is
necessary today to create and
grow your portfolio in order to
be self-sufficient in the future. I
encourage you to learn about
your options and opportunities
risk-free and fee-free by calling

for an appointment. You may

be severely impressed and
amazed at what you will learn
but, more importantly, how to
apply the knowledge to best
benefit your personal situation.

Group representative across the

The history of mouthwash

By Peter Brusco, DMD

nthropological evidence suggests that

ancient cultures practiced regular oral hygiene.
Researchers have found recipes
for teeth cleaning and breath
freshening preparations that
date to ancient Egyptian,
Chinese, Greek and Roman
peoples. The ingredients
included charcoal, fruit and
dried flowers, but theres no
credible evidence about effectiveness of these products.
Oral care products first
appeared when toothpaste was
developed in the 1800s.
Mouthwash was mass produced
commercially in the late 1800s.
The early brands contained
alcohol to stabilize the formula,
but today cetylpyridnium chloride(CPC) is the germ killing
product that doesnt need alco-

hol stabilization and is found in

many healthcare products. Its
germ killing ability is altered for
killing germs that cause dental
plaque and gingivitis.
There are now mouth
rinses for special needs such as
alcohol free, sensitive mouths,
braces and natural formulas.
The
scientific
evidence
remains limited to improving
breath and preventing plaque

buildup.
No mouthwash is a
replacement for a regular oral
care routine of twice daily
brushing and flossing. Mouth
rinse should always be used
with a daily routine of oral
hygiene to maintain good dental health.

Keeping your dog safe during the holidays

ith the holidays

here, we are all in
the mood for some
festivities. We plan parties and
cook for celebrations, but what
do our pups do? They are still
the same clever, curious rascal
they ever were. Something
that the holiday season does
bring some puppy hazards.
Everyone wants to enjoy the
holidays without a single hiccup, so make sure that you
make your home holiday safe
for dogs.
Seasonal
decorations.
The holidays bring about a
variety of color and light that
make the atmosphere look
quite magnificent. But beware

of nosy pups with mischief on

the mind. Power cords can be
very dangerous for a pup that
likes to chew. Make sure they

are hidden out of reach so no

one gets hurt. Besides lighting,
we often decorate our homes
with pretty plants such as

mistletoe, poinsettia and holly.

Unfortunately, all these plants
are actually very toxic especially for dogs. Consider going
with a synthetic likeness that
looks just as pretty. (And you
can use it again next year
save some money!) Besides the
house decorations, presents
often get decorated, too.
Wrapping paper is fun for both
man and dog, but we dont usually eat it. A pup may find it
quite tasty, but will likely just
end up with a belly-ache.
Hot dog. Candles make
the house look and smell nice,
but there is a bit of a hazard to
this. A happy tail or a nosy
snout can knock a candle over

and burn your pup or catch

something on fire. If you have
candles, keep them up high
and never leave the home
without making sure theyre
out. Another concern is the
fireplace. Those flickering
flames can intrigue a curious
pup, so make sure you use a
fireplace protector or screen to
keep any noses from being
singed.
Time for eats. The festivities and food are going to be
almost every dogs weakness.
Honestly, who can resist a tasty
piece of whats cooking? Items
on the table top left unattended can make a likely target for
an eager pup, so keep things

out of reach and no paws on

the table. Unfortunately, dogs
arent always the culprit.
Sometimes theyre just the victim of some sneaky hands that
tossed them a spoonful off their
plate. Make sure that everyone
knows not to feed the pup, and
if you dont want to take any
chances, put your pup somewhere where they wont be
tempted. Dont forget to give
them their own snacks and toys
to enjoy.
The table top isnt the

Keeping your dog safe during the holidays

cooked and eaten, theres likely

to be a few leftovers. And
where do some leftovers end
up? After scraping plates clean,
we often end up with some
scraps in the garbage can. So
make sure to bag it and toss it
before anyone gets any ideas.
Now, table scraps might
not sound to concerning for
some folks, but keep in mind
that there are several dinner
items that can make a pup
extremely sick. Raisins and
grapes are notorious for upsetting a pups belly and often
make it to a countertop fruit
ornamentation basket. Onions
add flavor to a meal, but they
arent any better for a pup. And
chocolate is one of the worst,
but possibly the most popular
for the season. Make sure and
keep any and all of these foods
out of your pups reach, and
inform visitors not to feed

them these specific things.

Along that topic comes
the merry part of the holidays. We should all eat, drink
and be merry, but pups shouldnt be doing any drinking
(even if they arent driving).
Beer and other alcoholic beverages are dangerous to pups
bodies. They dont experience
it the way we do, and organs
such as their liver and kidneys

can be damaged very easily by

alcohol.
Holidays are supposed to
be fun, and you can make them
as fun as you want. Just be sure
that you keep your pup safe and
out of harms way so you can
both enjoy the season festivities.

Q.

How do I choose where to go for Vein

Treatment?

In todays competitive
medical environment, it
seems there are many
physicians offering vein
care as a part of their
overall practices. The list
includes virtually all specialties, and most
advertise themselves as Vein Specialists, even though they may not have received any specialized training in vein
procedures.

A.

Choosing where to go for vein treatment may be just as important as the

initial decision to seek treatment. Here
are a few basic ideas that might help
you decide.

Rex Ghassemi, M.D., F.A.C.C.,

is certif ied by the American Board of
Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional
Cardiology. He is a member of the American
College of Phlebology and the American
Society of Laser Medicine and Surgery.
Dr. Ghassemi specializes in advanced
vascular procedures, which include Vascular
Laser Therapy for the treatment of varicose
veins, laser ablation and sclerotherapy. He
also specializes in advanced cardiovascular
procedures, including angioplasty, laser
atherectomy and stenting.
Dr. Ghassemi received his M.D. from the
University of Medicine and Dentistry
(UMDNJ)/Robert Wood Johnson Medical
School in Camden. His internship and
residency were completed at the Medical
College of Pennsylvania Hospital in
Philadelphia in Internal Medicine in 1991.
He completed his fellowship at Hahnemann
University Hospital in 1994 and in 1995
completed an Interventional Fellowship at
the Albert Einstein Medical Center,
Philadelphia.

THE TREATING PHYSICIAN

Did you know that taking a moment to
check the credentials of your physician is
a valuable first step? While many doctors
may claim to be experts, only a qualified
vein specialist has the broad knowledge
of your venous system to accurately diag-

nose the causes of your venous condition. A qualified vein specialist has the experience, expertise and the necessary
equipment to treat your varicose veins
with exactly the right procedures tailored
to your specific problem. Many part time
phlebologists (a medical specialist trained
in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of venous origin), offer only 1-2
modalities of therapy.
THE VEIN CENTER
Are the facilities attractive and clean?
Do the Center personnel present a professional demeanor? Vein specialists
generally do all their diagnostic work
and perform their procedures right in
their vein center locations; so the appearance of the office can tell you a lot
about the practice. Ask if there are Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) ultrasound technicians on site. RVT techs
are the most credentialed professionals
to perform ultrasound-guided diagnostics as part of the evaluation process.

Now is the time to get

ready for Fall Fun.
Take a trip to enjoy the
Fall foliage; visit an apple
orchard; hike the
Appalachian mountains; enjoy
pumpkin picking with your
children and grandchildren.
All these great Fall
activities require fresh
and healthy legs.

diseases that can develop into serious medical issues, including

The vein treatment I received was great. I am very happy with the

Good vs great
Picture this...

irca 2008. My wife

and I operated a program called Adopt a
Child, whose objective was
to provide children from abusive homes with gifts for
Christmas. The program was
designed to match a child in
need with someone willing to
provide a gift(s), as best as
they could, per the childs
Christmas wish. From 1996 to
2008 the program provided
20,000 children with roughly
50,000 gifts. In 2000, we
received the Volunteer of the
Year award in New Jersey.
But something just didnt

feel right. The question we

had to ask ourselves was Is
this program really making a
difference? The honest
answer was yes, but not as we
had originally intended. It was
a good program, but not a
great one.
We decided to stop in
2008 and while I knew it
would hurt some folks, I also
understood it had to be done.
Shortly thereafter I sensed a
call to serve men, helping
them to be what they were
created to be. Legacy Minded
Men was born and the impact
it has had on many men and

their families can be described

as transformational.
Think about it
Sometimes you have to
trade something that is good
to do something that is great!
Perhaps there is a trade
you should consider? What

top producing sales associate

for October, 2014.

The home buyers and
sellers of Northern New Jersey
truly have a real estate resource
they can trust in Annmarie
DeGeorge, said Patricia
Wojtyszyn, broker/owner of
CENTURY 21 Crest Real
Estate.
Annmarie really
understands that for many people, buying or selling a home is
the most significant purchase
of a lifetime, and she leverages
her real estate knowledge and
professionalism to help make
each transaction as smooth as
possible.

DeGeorge has several

years of experience in the
industry and has been with the
CENTURY 21 System for
five years. It is my practice to
work extra hard for each and
every one of my clients. To be
honored by my brokerage is the
icing on the cake, said
DeGeorge.
Annmarie has
been a full time agent since
1999. She lives and works in
Pequannock. To put her
expertise to work for you, she
can be reached directly at 973896-6178.

design. Unmold the shapes

onto the prepared baking
sheet, leaving about 1 inch
between them.
Bake the cookies until
lightly golden along the sides
but still soft to the touch in
the centers, 7 to 15 minutes.
The timing will depend on
the size of the individual
cookies, or if you have made a
single large patterned piece

that will be cut after baking.

While the cookies are
baking, prepare the glaze. In a
small bowl, whisk together the
confectioners sugar and water
until smooth.
When the cookies are
ready, remove from the oven
and let cool on the pan on a
wire rack for about 10 minutes. Then, while the cookies
are still warm, using even
strokes, brush a light coat of

glaze on top of each cookie,

evenly covering it. Let the
cookies cool completely.
When the glaze dries, it
should leave a shiny, opaque
finish. The cookies will keep
in an airtight container in a
cool place for about 2 weeks.
They do not freeze well, however, as glaze becomes watery
when they are thawed. Yields:
12-20 cookies.

old dining room table. On May

twelfth of 2006, my father went
home to be with the Lord.
Since then, not a day has gone
by that I havent thought of
him. Id give up everything I
ever worked hard for, everything, to spend just five minutes with my Dad at that old
dining room table.
Sometimes, I feel my
heart is going to break when I
hear a parent complain about
their child. Or, when I hear a
child complain about a parent.
Life upon this earth is short. It
really is. Forgive people when
they hurt you. Throw your
grudges out to sea and let the
tide sweep them away. Love
one another. Tell the people
you love that you love them.
