Commissions Round Two Opens to Applications from Disabled Artists

A development aiming to offer a number of commissions to disabled artists in England, Wales and
Scotland and to develop, produce and show ambitious and high quality work, with mentoring support.
Unlimited was at the heart of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, celebrating the work of disabled artists on an
unprecedented scale. In 2013, Shape and Artsadmin were successful in securing an award from Arts Council
England of 1.5 million over three years to act as national delivery partners for the next phase of Unlimited
commissions with Jo Verrent as Senior Producer and key partners including Creative Scotland, British Council,
Southbank Centre and DaDaFest.
Although not on the same scale as the 2012 Unlimited, this exciting development will offer a number of
commissions and to develop, produce and show ambitious and high quality work, with mentoring support.
Awards will fund three stages of activity: Research and development (optional, depending on the stage of
development the project is at). Creation and production. Showcasing and presentation.
Awards are expected to be in the range of 20,000 80,000 depending on scale and ambition. Between 10
and 20 awards are expected to be made under this round of funding. Professional, established disabled artists
and companies that support disabled-led work across all art-forms are encouraged to apply.
The key criteria that must be adhered to include: Disability-led, Quality, Innovation and ambition, Strong track
record of creating work and reaching audiences. Strong artist/producer relationship evidenced, Collaborations
and partnerships (including with non-disabled led companies/artists/producers). Flexibility/adaptability to
ensure works engage with a range of venue sizes/scales
For the 2015 round, Unlimited are looking to commission new work, i.e. that which may still be at a very early
stage of conception, or may already have undergone some form of research and development. Work can be in
any art form, as long as it is innovative, varied, excellent and led by disabled artists. Unlimited is focused on
art, not disability; work may reference disability, or it may not.
The deadline for applications is 2 February 2015 (12pm).

Childcare Business Grants Scheme

In order to encourage more women into work, the
Chancellor is considering extending the scheme,
which provides grants of 250 to prospective child
minders or 500 to those looking to start up
nurseries in England.
The Childcare Business Grants Scheme aims to boost the provision of childcare in
England and to incentivise entrepreneurship. It encourages and supports the
starting up of new childcare businesses by providing a flat rate start-up grant.
There are three types of grant available, depending on the type of childcare
business that is to be set up:

250 for new child-minding businesses (a child-minder is someone who looks

after children in their own home, either alone or with help from one or two
other adults).

500 for new child-minding businesses (as above) that intend to provide care for disabled children.

500 for larger childcare businesses, including nurseries and out-of-school clubs (which are usually run in
a specialist building), and childcare businesses on domestic premises (in someone's home, but with four
or more adults working there).
All costs incurred through the setting up of a childcare business will be considered as eligible. This includes:
courses attended, health check, Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, public liability insurance, house
or commercial building insurance cover, additional car insurance to cover the transportation of the children in
care, and any additional equipment that is purchased.
Those who are intending to set up a brand new childcare business in England may apply for support through
this programme. Applicants are required to contact their local authority before applying for this grant. Local
authorities have a statutory duty in regard to childcare, and can offer useful advice and information regarding
the local situation.
In order to encourage more women into work, the Chancellor, Mr Osborne, is considering extending the
scheme to those looking to start up nurseries in England. So far the scheme has supported around 4,000 new
child minders, which between them offered up to 29,000 new childcare places.
Officials believe that a further cash injection of 2 million could support up to 50,000 new childcare places.
Applications may be submitted at any time. www.gov.uk/government/policies/creating-a-fairer-andmore-equal-society/supporting-pages/funding-a-grant-scheme-for-new-childcare-businesses
