CASE ANALYSIS

: Farmers Group Raps NFA Head on Rice Import Move

* VIEWPOINT
:
*TIME CONTEXT :
I.

FARMERS
BEFORE PHILIPPINES IMPORTS RICE FROM INDONESIA

PROBLEM STATEMENT:
What should the farmers do to make their rice more consumable than the imported ones?

II.

STATEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES

To set a right price and deal with the NFA so that there would be a higher chance to buy their product
instead of prioritizing the imported ones than the local.

III.

AREAS OF CONSIDERATIONS
Strengths

Fairly fertile soils

Cheaper and more affordable by many
Suits the Filipino taste; more tender, long-grain and aromatic
compared with other rice

Weaknesses

Lack of technology (machineries, tools etc.) to plant and harvest

the crops faster
Irrigation infrastructure
Transport infrastructure
Small land areas

Opportunities
New machines or technologies that will fast track the implantation
of the products
Export more and be noticed by the locals and foreigners outside
the country; currently exporting in Singapore, USA and Dubai
Threats

Imported Rice are more noticeable by the consumers due to the

mind set of Filipinos that imported products have better quality
than the local
Typhoons that may damage the planted crops and leads to Net Loss
Due to the Annual Population Growth of 2%, local farmers might
not be able to supply

IV.

ASSUMPTIONS:

V.

Rice Hoarders

Farmers assumed that imported rice will be purchased by the

consumers instead of the local rice because Filipinos think that
imported products has better quality
Threats and weaknesses might be the reason why Romeo David
determined to import and let him think that theres a possibility to
have a rice shortage

ALTERNATIVE COURSES OF ACTION (ACA)

ACA1
1. To conduct supervisory skills and training to all supervisors and
leadmen for the development and enhancement of their skills and for the
orientation of the companys policies.
ACA2
2. To assess the performance of all the workers and leadmen. Those that
are incompetent should be terminated or proper sanctions should be taken
and hiring of qualified new workers and leaders to fill up the positions left.
ACA3
3. To review the companys table of organization and existing manpower.
Recommend job rotation to minimize monotony and boredome.
VI.

ANALYSIS
ACA1
Strengths

Weaknesses

With the said training, they will all be aware of their job
description and its importance in the company.
With the said training, this will enhance their skills and be
motivated as well.
The supervisors, leadmen and laborers will be aware on the
strict compliance to the companys policies.

There will be an effect in the production, at first; there will

be a decrease in production result.
There will be an additional cost involved in conducting the
training.

There will be a resistant to change. They might not be

attentive or participative.

Opportunities
Adapt new leadership styles and methodology and be able
to teach this to the laborers.
The company will regain its title as one of the countrys
largest producers of fabricated steel products.
Workers will have competence in themselves and be more
productive.
Threats
The tendency, that they might be pirated by other
competitors.
With the new machines and technologies, these might lead
to displacement of the leadmen, supervisors and laborers.
ACA2
Strengths

Weaknesses

The supervisors, leadmen and laborers will tend to be more

attentive and cautious of their behavior now that they are
being monitored.
Non-performers will be terminated or they will not be lax
in their performance.
Qualified people will be promoted and given job
enrichment.
Those that are not promoted, the tendency is, they will be
demoralized and might go back of being tardy.
The anticipation that there will be the same problematic
staffs.
Those that will be terminated will protest and hold rally.

Opportunities
Customers will noticed and appreciate the positive changes
in serving their customers.
The company will maintain its goodwill.
Threats
On the point of view of the competitors, they might also be
thinking of re-structuring to entice clients of ABC on their
new developments and might penetrate the market.
ACA3
Strengths

After reviewing the companys table of organization and

manpower, they will now hire new qualified personnel to

fill up the positions. And with this, the new hired, will be
more responsible in their duties and responsibilities.
Weaknesses

Still, the newly hired will still be trained and with this, the
anticipation that their will be a period of adjustment in the
workforce.
Given this, the existing staffs will be alarmed and
threatened.

Opportunities
The possibility of new customers will come due to the
hiring of the best employees.
The new hires will be able to share the knowledge of the
new technology which they have in their previous
employer.
Threats
Those that were terminated might attempt to share to other
competitors the secrets they have in ABC and might result
to damage the reputation of ABC.

We therefore conclude that sending the supervisors and leadmen to

training seem to be more effective and acceptable and that the
company should really anticipate only minimal cost during this
period of implementation.
