ILOCOS NORTE:

Introduction:
Ilocos Norte (Ilokano: Amianan nga Ilocos; Tagalog: Hilagang Ilokos) is
a province of the Philippines located in the Ilocos Region. Its capital is Laoag City and is
located at the northwest corner of Luzon Island, bordering Cagayan and Apayao to the east,
and Abra and Ilocos Sur to the south. Ilocos Norte faces the South China Sea to the west and
the Luzon Strait to the north.

Famous People:
Juan Luna:
Juan Luna is considered one of the greatest Filipino artists in Philippine history with
masterpieces such as Spolarium, The Death of Cleopatra and Blood Compact. Not only did he
excel in artistry, but he was also a political activist during the time of the Philippine
Revolution during the late 19thcentury.
Born on October 23, 1857 in the town of Badoc in Ilocos Norte, Juan was the son of Don
Joaquin Luna de San Pedro y Posadas and Doa Laureana Novicio y Ancheta.
He received his degree in Bachelor of Arts at Ateneo de Manila and enrolled later at Escuela
Nautica de Manila where he became a sailor. This did not stop Luna from his pursuit in
developing his artistic skills. He took lessons under the famous painting teacher Lorenzo
Guerrero and also enrolled at Academia de Dibujo y Pintura under the Spanish artist
Agustin Saez.
Juan Lunas other popular works include The Happy Beauty and the Blind Slave, Tampuhan,
Mestiza Lady at her Dresser and Roman Ladies. He died in 1899 at the age of 42 after he
suffered from a heart attack. Today, several of his works can be found in esteemed
museums in the Philippines such as the Lopez Museum and National Museum.

Ferdinand Marcos:
Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos began his career in politics with the murder of Julio
Nalundasan in 1935, and ended it after the murder of Benigno Aquino Jr. in 1983. Some
believe his entire life was based on fraud, deceit, and theft, and his time as president has
come to represent one of the prime examples of a corrupt government.

Gregorio Aglipay:
Gregorio Agilpay was the principal founder and first Supreme Bishop of the Philippine
Independent Church. Known for inciting patriotic rebellion among the Filipino clergy, he
was also apolitical activist who became acquainted with Isabelo de los Reyes, who would
start an Independent Christian Filipino Church named after Aglipay in 1902.

Manuel Quezon
Manuel Quezon was governor of Tayabas province before being elected a representative in
1907 to the newly established Philippine Assembly. In 1909 Quezon was appointed
resident commissioner for the Philippines, entitled to speak, but not vote, in the U.S. House
of Representatives; during his years in Washington, he fought for a speedy grant of
independence by the U.S., which happened in 1935.

Pamulinawen Festival of Laoag
The Pamulinawen Festival is held in Laoag City, every year in early February.
Laoag City is the capital of the province of Ilocos Norte. Pamulinawen is the name of a
woman made popular in the classic Ilocano song titled... Pamulinawen.
The Pamulinawen Festival celebrates the city's founding as well as the feast day of
its patron saint, William of Maleval, who died on February 10 way back in the year 1157
AD. The festival's highlight is a parade and a street-dance competition. It takes 10 hours by
bus from Manila to Laoag City.

DAMILI FESTIVAL: A TRIBUTE TO THE ANCIENT CEREMICS MAKERS OF SAN


NICOLAS
SAN NICOLAS, Ilocos Norte, Dec. 18 Residents are paying tribute to their ancient craft of
terra-cotta pottery (or damili) through a month-long celebration of dances, exhibits, sports
competitions and showcase of talents.
The Damili festival was institutionalized when the community saw the need to revive and
preserve its traditional occupation of pottery that dates back to the turn of the 19th
century.
The towns most enduring traditional product is the lowly banga (cooking pot) which has
become an icon of Ilocano heritage and a livelihood that sustained generations of families
of pot-makers.
Held every Christmas time, the town of San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte celebrates the Damili
festival to acknowledge the main source of their livelihood: Pottery. They use the red
variety they call Damili, which is abundant in the Ilocos region. Aside from pots, the red
clay is also being used to create the beautiful damili tiles used as flooring for various
structures like the Fort Ilocandia Casino and Hotel, Laoag International Airport, and Marcos
Mansion.

ILOCOS SUR
Introduction:
Ilocos Sur is a province of the Philippines located in the Ilocos Region in Luzon. The
province is bounded on the north by Ilocos Norte and Abra, on the south by La Union; on
the east by Benquet and Mountain Province and on the west by the China Sea. It has a total
land area of 2,579.6 square km. The province of Ilocos Sur is politically subdivided into 34
municipalities and 761 barangays.
The economy of Ilocos Sur is based on agriculture, producing a wide variety of vegetables,
animals, and fish. Principal products are rice, corn, tobacco, garlic, sugarcane and cassava.
They are expanding into a variety of food-processing industries, and also practice a number
of crafts and cottage industries: blanketweaving, basketry, shellcraft, broommaking,
pottery-making, wine and vinegar making, jewelry making, wood and stone craft, among
others jars and antiques can also be bought in Vigan.

Vigan City is the capital city of the Ilocos Sur.
