Topic of Lesson: Subjects and Predicates
Date: September 29, 2005
Time Frame of Lesson: 30-45 minutes

1. a. Intended Learning Outcomes:

Students will be able to list the two necessary elements
of a complete sentence.
Students will be able to identify the subjects and
predicates in sentences.
b. Learning Standard(s)
General Standard 5: Structure and Origins of Modern
English
o 5.4 Recognize the subject-predicate relationship
in sentences
2. Environment
Whole Class
Lesson will begin during Morning Meeting (Activity and
News & Announcements) and transition into Language
Arts period.
3. Materials and Resources
Subject/Predicate Song, daily News & Announcement
(includes review of subjects/predicates), red and blue
markers, sentence strips, and Three Busy Pigs
worksheet.
4. Procedure/Summary
a. Introductory Motivator
Activity (5 minutes)
During the Activity portion of the Morning Meeting I will
sing the Subject/Predicate song to the class. (Note: The
song is written on chart paper so students may follow
along).
The class then joins in singing it the second time
through.
b. Procedure
Morning Message (5 minutes)
The classroom greeters will read the Morning Message
(A.K.A. News & Announcements). The Morning Message

is interactive. Volunteers will be asked to circle the

subjects of the sample sentences in red and underline
the predicates in blue.
o Hint: Refer back to the song for clues if youre
stuck (i.e. subject = who or what Predicate =
tells about the subject).
Game (10-15 minutes)
Hand out sentence strips to class.
o Keep facedown on desk.
When instructed, students may flip over
their strip and read it.
Tables 2, 3, and 4 will stand and display their strips.
Students at Table 1 may silently walk around and find
the person that completes their sentence (the missing
subject/predicate).
If the class is maintaining control and remaining quiet,
the remaining tables 2, 3, and 4 may also circulate.
Once they have completed their sentence by finding
their match they should stand around the perimeter of
the circle with their partner.
Each pair should read the completed sentence and say
who the subject is and who the predicate is.
For a silly twist allow the students to try and find a new
partner. They may create a silly sentence as long as it
is a complete one. (Follow procedure above).
c. Closure/Assessment (5-10 minutes)
Three Busy Pigs Worksheet (started during lesson;
can be completed for homework).
d. Anticipated Questions/Problems
Potential problem might be the noise level during the
game
There is potential for some confusion/questions from 4
students who were absent yesterday (this lesson is

Subject/Predicate Song
A subject, a predicateThese are quite important!
Combine the two, and you will see
That you have formed a sentence.
The subject, the subject
Is a noun or pronoun.
Who or what it usually tells,
And that is how youll find it.
The predicate, the predicate

It tells about the subject,

What it is or what it does,
A verb and all its helpers.
The subject, the predicate
Together form a sentence.
Write them both then punctuate
VOILA! You have a sentence.
