Session 2014-2015

Professor N Barltrop

Simplified estimation of stress intensity factors for ship and offshore structures
(Several students can undertake related projects)
Understanding the fatigue behaviour of structural connections usually requires
extensive finite element analysis (FEA). This project will continue work to use
FEA to provide an understanding that, in a simple and quick way, can be used
for design/checking and within reliability models will reduce the future need for
FEA.

Design of a renewable energy device

A wind, wave or tidal stream device design will be developed.

Strength of panels subject to in and out of plane loads

The project will review existing guidance and compare results of a relatively
simple strength assessment method with the codes and with FEA.

Assessment of rules for design of container ships

The MOL Comfort broke up in June 2013. This project will investigate the
structural strength of container ships, taking into account slamming loads and
local as well as global loading effects on plating.

The following projects are provided by Shell

Comparison of measured and numerical model vessel motions in the Central

North Sea
Anasuria and Curlew are Central North Sea turret-moored FPSOs (see
pictures) and they have been instrumented to measure their motions in 6
degrees of freedom. We also measured the wind, wave and current conditions
during the winter of 2013/14 so we know both the environmental loadings and
responses of the vessels. The project would involve comparing the measured
vessel responses with those predicted by vessel motion software tools.

Comparison of measured and model current profile data through the winter of

2013-14
There are very few measured data sets of currents available in the North Sea.
Shell, however, measured current profiles through the winter of 2013/14 at
two locations in the Central North Sea. We would like to know how the

measured data compare with a set of model data that covers the same period
at the same locations. We also measured wind and wave at the same
locations and are interested in characterising the relationships between them
and the measured currents.
1.

We have many years of 2Hz or 4Hz wave data measured right across
the North Sea in water depths ranging from 150m down to 7m. The
project would involve examining the details of the wave data. Including,
for example:
a.
Hmax to Hs ratios in storms
b.
wave crest and still water level relationships
c.
wave steepness characteristics

Development and application of a rational method for producing

environmental data design contours
Offshore platforms are often designed using particular combinations of Hs and
Tz that can be represented as a design contour on a scatter diagram. This
project will develop and test a new method for specifying design contours.
