Simplified estimation of stress intensity factors for ship and offshore structures
(Several students can undertake related projects)
Understanding the fatigue behaviour of structural connections usually requires
extensive finite element analysis (FEA). This project will continue work to use
FEA to provide an understanding that, in a simple and quick way, can be used
for design/checking and within reliability models will reduce the future need for
FEA.
Comparison of measured and model current profile data through the winter of
2013-14
There are very few measured data sets of currents available in the North Sea.
Shell, however, measured current profiles through the winter of 2013/14 at
two locations in the Central North Sea. We would like to know how the
measured data compare with a set of model data that covers the same period
at the same locations. We also measured wind and wave at the same
locations and are interested in characterising the relationships between them
and the measured currents.
1.
We have many years of 2Hz or 4Hz wave data measured right across
the North Sea in water depths ranging from 150m down to 7m. The
project would involve examining the details of the wave data. Including,
for example:
a.
Hmax to Hs ratios in storms
b.
wave crest and still water level relationships
c.
wave steepness characteristics
