L.O: I can write and finish a descriptive story.
Teaching Objectives:
Session One warm-up activities:
I can join sentences using connectives.
I can up-level work using descriptive vocabulary.
Session Two main writing activity:
I can write a story with a beginning middle and end.
I can include adjectives.
Plenary:
Share work & suggest how to up-level it.
Prior Knowledge/Links with Literacy or Creative Curriculum Unit:
We have been discussing our local area within our topic work.
During Literacy we have been focussing on settings & adjectives.
Safeguarding: remind chn of the dangers of trying out the things the superheroes do.
Warm-up

Give out last weeks marked work. Chn have time to read marking, understand their
next steps & ask questions.

Discuss what chn like & dislike about the story. Elicit that it is good because it
includes speech but the description is poor. If you went to super hero high what
lessons would you take? What special powers would you need to be a super hero?
Which would be your favourite lessons? Why?

Give out planning sheets. Make notes on planning sheet to describe hero & powers.
Encourage chn to make choices which differ from yours. Use word bank on sheet to
help generate ideas.
Look at story board style planning frame & plan out parts of own story.

Return to plan & model writing the story. Keep referring to plan & explain thinking
out loud. Make a spelling mistake & model underlining the word to check later, so
you dont loose your flow while writing now. Model up-levelling a sentence by
rereading & changing for more descriptive vocab. Include speech using speech
marks & remind chn to use the name of the person speaking.

Stop chn, They read their work to themselves to edit (as assessment week cannot
read to anyone else). Ensure they understand how long they have left so will
complete the story in time.

Plenary:
Review success criteria. Chn draw a face next to their LO to show how well they
think they have met it.
Chn read a favourite sentence & others give feedback.
Differentiation/Extension Activities:
Through outcome as this BW session is used for assessment & levelling.
EAL story chosen is recommended by British Council to support EAL.
