Phonology I (Chapter 5)
. Introduction
1. Introduction
-Knowledge of phonology determines how we pronounce words and morphemes.
-Often, certain morphemes are pronounced differently depending on their context.
-We will introduce a way of describing this variation with phonological rules.

-Minimal pairs
-A minimal pair is two words with different meanings that are identical except for one sound
segment that occurs in the same place in each word.
-Examples
cab [k b] - cad [k d] cat [k t] - mat [m t]
cab [k b] - cat [k t] bag [b g] - back [b k]
bag [b g] - badge [b ]
-Apparently, the distribution of plural allomorphs in English is conditioned by the final segment
of the singular form:
After [b], [d], [g], [v], [], [m], [n], [], [l], [r], [a], []

-An even more concise way to express these rules is to assume that the basic or underlying
form of the plural morpheme is /z/, with the meaning "plural." This is the default pronunciation.
The rules tell us when the default does not apply:
1. Insert a [] before the plural morpheme /z/ when a regular noun ends in a sibilant, giving
[z].
2. Change the plural morpheme /z/ to a voiceless /s/ when preceded by a voiceless sound.
-As we have formulated these rules, (1) must apply before (2) (feeding order). If we applied the
rules in reverse order (breeding order), we would derive an incorrect phonetic form for the plural
of bus.

Phonological rules that determine the phonetic form of morphemes are morphophonemic rules.
Such rules concern the pronunciation of specific morphemes. Thus the plural morphophonemic
rules apply to the plural morpheme specifically, not to all morphemes in English.
