The Advent Journey

The Revd Canon Dr. Kevin George
Dear Savior haste;
Come, come to earth,
Dispel the night and show Thy face,
And bid us hail the dawn of grace.
O come, divine Messiah!
The world in silence waits the day
When hope shall sing its triumph,
And sadness flee away.
O come divine Messiah! Advent has begun and our journey
towards the Christmas season is now upon us. It is an
expectant time.
While all the signs of Christmas may be abundant in the
commercial cathedrals, the church reminds us to hold on.
The church gives us one place where we can step away from
the consumer stress that has come to be a trademark of a
season whose roots have nothing to do with consumption and
indulgence, but everything to do with humility, hope and a
God who is in solidarity with our human hearts.
At this time of year, when we come together, we sing
and pray with words that remind us that we expect God
to come, to deliver hope, to dispel darkness and to set
us free from all that holds us captive.
It is a time of year when the darkness lengthens. Even the
cold of winter seems to have come a little early. As we look
around us we see much night. There is much darkness in the
world as well.
We long for peace, for wholeness, and for a sense of Gods
abiding presence to heal our own brokenness as well as our

broken world.
Advent is the beginning of our Church year. It is a time that allows us to sing to God to
hasten to come and dispel the darkness: to come deliver hopeto set us free.
I pray that as you all prepare for Christmas, you are able to come and join
us. Again this year we will offer Advent Vespers as an opportunity to pray
mid-week and we will of course be together each Sunday as we tell the
stories of John the Baptist, Mary and her Magnificent Song and Elizabeth
and her song of praise.
As Christmas approaches, I pray that you know the abiding Light of Christ. I give
thanks for you all and for our community at St. Aidans.
This year has been one of much growth and positive change. I look forward to ministering
with you in the year ahead of us. I pray that we continue to strive to be a reflection of
Emmanuel in our community.
Catherinanne and I wish you all a blessed and peaceful Christmas and offer prayers
for fulfillment for you all in the New Year.

Its Not Goodbye, Its See You Later!

Alex Strong
As I write this, the swirling snow outside my window reminds
me that Fall is nearly over and Winter is knocking at our
door. Every season brings beauty and change.
A significant and very positive change occurred this Fall
when another curriculum level was added to our Sunday
School. I am excited to report that our older students (aged
11-14) now learn from The Grid, an age-appropriate
program that connects with students lives in real and
practical ways.
The Grid is part of the Light curriculum from which we also
teach Bubbles, Splash and Xtreme. Now that we have four
classes, the need for teachers is even greater.

If you can teach even once a month, I encourage you to volunteer

our services. You will not be sorry you did!
Speaking of teachers, our wonderful ones were celebrated in October with a
reception in the Parish Hall and a presentation during announcements.
Their energy and commitment is greatly appreciated. If you enjoy the
quality childrens programming offered at St. Aidans, be sure to thank
these dedicated women.
Our CYFM is looking forward to a busy November. Back by popular
demand, we will be creating Welcome Bags for the families at Ronald
McDonald House as part of our Outreach Program. Our bags will include
essential toiletries as well as a homemade card lovingly made by the children.
Kelley Montfort, my primary contact at RMH, has reported that she received wonderful
feedback about the cards in particular. Please emphasize to your children that something
as simple as a homemade card can and does make a difference in someones life.
Also in November, we held our Waiting Tree Activity on Sunday, November 23rd. This
year, we had a pizza lunch after church and then created our
ornaments to celebrate the coming of Advent. It was a fun day!
December will bring our Annual Christmas Pageant on Sunday,
December 21st and the end of my time as Director of Christian
Childrens Education.
To say that I will miss my St. Aidans family is an understatement. For
the past 18 months, you have been a regular part of my life and my
routine. I have grown to adore your children and value your friendship
and guidance.
We have celebrated birthdays and baptisms, holidays and holy days.
We have baked cookies, shared coffee and made ornaments. We have laughed and learned
and prayed together. Working with you and for you has been an experience I will always
remember.
Thank you for welcoming me into this community and allowing me to join you on the
journey. Youll still see me from time to time so lets say, Its not goodbye, its see you
later.

Would you like to dedicate the next edition of By the Way in memory
of a loved one?

Our Vibrant & Meaningful Community

Doug Wilson-Hodge, Mary Townshend, Wendy Kilgour & Jim Smythe
Welcome to our first submission for our newly-titled St. Aidans
newsletter, By The Way. In many ways, this completes our
rebranding initiatives since joining forces with the Church of the
Hosannas. We thank Pam Townsend for her title suggestion and
Rose Perry, our Parish Administrator, for facilitating the contest.
Since our last report, a number of projects and initiatives have been
completed or have taken large steps in that direction:

The new lawn sign has been installed with accompanying parking lot signs due to the fine
efforts of Doug Wilson-Hodge.

A new working financial model, including the hiring of a bookkeeper, overseen by financial
specialist Andra ONeill is now in place using the framework of Powerchurch, a computer
software program designed for Church organizations.

A new curriculum for our young teens has been purchased and implemented by Alexandra
Strong. As Alexs time with us is quickly drawing to a close, we ask for your prayers as we
initiate a search for a new Children and Youth Leader.

Our Silver Saints and Parish Nursing Ministries have far exceeded expectations to date.

The storage locker, once used for items recovered from Hosannas, has been emptied and
closed. The removal of the stained glass windows from Hosannas has been delayed as the
new owner waits for the city to make physical changes to Hyde Park Road before attempting
major renovations. This however is seen as a positive as the windows will remain in a secure
environment with no storage costs to us.

The kitchen renovation plan has been passed through formal approval by our Parish
Council and is scheduled for completion in September of 2015.

Advent ~ Dec 2014 Edition

We are on the way to completing our fundraising goal of $13,000 through two financially
successful Spring and Fall Community Sales, our Charity Golf Tournament in June, Treats
and Trivia in November, the launch of our new Aidans Wear clothing line, and of course
our annual Jazz By The Bog concert series. Your continued support of these events is
appreciated.

During Advent, as we wait and contemplate the

Christmas season, it is an opportunity to give thanks
to those who have stepped forward in various
volunteer roles. Through their contributions to the
numerous committees and work groups that keep us
moving forward and create a vibrant and meaningful
place to worship, we are a better people of God.
The attached Christmas envelope is another way we give thanks at this time of year.
As has been our custom, here at St. Aidans, proceeds from these envelopes will be
received by our Rector, Kevin. Any cheques for this purpose must be written directly
to Kevin George.

Financial Update
Andra ONeill
This has been a year where the longstanding commitments of those
who have been stewards of both St. Aidans and the Church of the
Hosannas for many years past have had their financial gifts added to
and bolstered by many new members of our community.
The spirit that has been alive and well at St. Aidans for many years
is working in very visible ways and now, financially, we are moving
from survival to mission.
May we prayerfully approach the end of 2014 and beginning of 2015 open to the will
of God for our community, our families and the mission of St. Aidans.

4. Rentals

2.27%

Offerings: Representing the primary source of our income, our offering total is measured in
three areas:
1. Envelopes (57% of offerings): $7, 000 behind budget tracking at about $800 below
budget on a monthly basis. This is a gap that can be closed.
*If just 100 members were able to add $70 to the offering plate at one time before the
end of the year, or 200 members $35, this gap would be closed.
2. Pre-Authorized Giving (40%): has achieved a 7% increase over last years actual
and is very close to reaching a 10% increase.
*Please consider adjusting your monthly plan a little early for next year to help all of
us achieve our fighting budget goal for this area.
3. Open Offering (3%): the much smaller open offering is up over 25% above 2013
actual.
Fundraising: Two of our largest fundraising events took place in the
month of November: The Community Sale on Saturday November 8th and
Trivia & Treats on Thursday November 20th. Thank you for supporting
our community through these events! You may also want to consider
some of our new Aidans Wear clothing line for yourself or as
Christmas gifts for your loved ones.
Income and Rentals: Both are in good shape.
Expenses: We are keeping expenses in line with our budget expectation with a few
exceptions. Hydro is likely to remain above budget through to the end of the year.
We have also increased the hours of our Parish Administrator Rose Perry due to the extra
needs of an ever-expanding church.
We are working on an HST claim that we hope to settle before year end that will even out
some costs that we have at present.
At Vestry, we committed to a 7% increase in givings and felt that 10% was worth
aiming for. I want to thank you all for putting that 7% clearly in sight for us, for
making 10% a possibility and most importantly, for being part of this welcoming,
loving, Christian community.

ACW Report
Sue ODriscoll & Katherine Keeling
Heather Mills, after approximately 14 years as President of the St. Aidans ACW, has
resigned. All of us thank her for her leadership which she gave so willingly over all the
years to help us fulfill our mission and our Ministry. We deeply appreciate Heathers
dedication to the parish as she helped all of us to live up to our calling.
The Ministry continues with the Executive Committee of Sue ODriscoll, Acting Head for one
year, Katherine Keeling, Secretary, Julia Mitchell, Treasurer and First Signing Officer, Anne
Kershaw, Second Signing Officer and person in charge of sandwiches for receptions, and
Charlotte Southern, responsible for sweets for receptions.

So onto this year

It was so successful in 2013 that we have decided to hold another
Bakeless Bake Sale to support our Outreach Ministry this year. It
means that we can offer support without having a messy
kitchen. Who needs all the cleaning as well as the calories?!
Katherine Keeling will look after the 8 am congregation with
envelopes in hand and Sue ODriscoll will have envelopes ready to
hand out to the 10:30 am congregation. The envelopes will be
handed out on November 30r d , December 7t h and December 14th. All
donations will be gratefully received.
Toonies for Turkeys for the Fellowship Centre at St. Pauls Social
Services where the need never ends will also continue again this year.
We will be asking the senior Sunday School children to begin
collecting toonies or loonies or whatever else - using small socks on
November 9th, 16th and 23rd. The money collected will be used by the
Fellowship Centre to purchase turkeys for their annual Christmas
Dinner, as well as food for the next few months.
For your information, the Limberlost Program which provides a hot
meal for those people in need in that area of London close to us (North of Gainsborough
Road) continues. St. Aidans provided a meal on a Tuesday in the month of October and
will again in January 2015. Other nights are covered by other congregations in the city.
Again, this is a wonderful Ministry in which we participate at St. Aidans.

Parish Nursing Ministry Update
Pat Ferguson
Philosophy:
Recognizing that all persons are sacred and must be treated with respect and
dignity, the Parish Nursing Ministry of St. Aidans will:
Empower all to reach their best level of health - body, mind and spirit.
It is coming up to the end of our first year in this Ministry and what a year it
has been!

April Weekly Bulletin announcements about Health Issues and Healthy Living suggestions
began

May Our Congregational Health and Wellness Survey was launched

July Our Monthly Blood Pressure Clinics were initiated

September We held our first Lunch & Learn Session with the VON (Victorian Order of
Nurses) as special guests. More than 30 people attended!

complete Level II of the Parish Nursing Ministry program

Thus far, I have had contact with more than 40 parishioners seeking
information about their well-being, including home and hospital visits
and face-to-face visits at the church.

Silver Saints Ministry Update
The Revd Anne Jaikaran
The Silver Saints have enjoyed a very social Fall! In September, over 40 people
from both inside and outside the parish came to a pasta lunch and a
presentation from Michael and Carol Tattersall on their vacation in Ireland
and Europe. Then, in November, around 40 people enjoyed another delicious
lunch catered by Remark, followed by an inspiration talk by John Davidson
on Jesse's Journey.
Thanks to widespread advertising by Rose Perry, our
Parish Administrator, people from all around the
community are getting to hear about our Wednesday
lunches and coming to enjoy the fellowship of sharing
a meal together. We plan to have a Christmas get
together in December, so please watch out for details
about that event.
Pastoral visiting has continued as have our monthly
services at People Care and Amica, with the possibility
of a third service being added at McCormick.
The next layer to be added to our Ministry will be The Alongsiders which is a Ministry
undertaken by parishioners who are perhaps no longer physically able to be as active in the
parish as they used to be, but would still like to contribute to the life of St Aidan's.
They commit to undergirding the activities of the church with prayer. They are given a
booklet containing prayer suggestions and a monthly calendar with all the activities taking
place so they can pray 'alongside'.
I have already approached some
people, but would be happy to hear
from anyone who would like to be
involved.
Looking forward to an exciting 2015!
I can be contacted at 519-439-1721 or ajaikaran@hotmail.com

Please remember to save your stamps for the Canadian Bible Society
when you open your Christmas cards this year! It is amazing how much
stamps weigh when they are gathered, one by one by one.
I am very happy to do all the clipping, so please just tear off the stamp
with a good lot of paper around it. The Canadian Bible Society cannot
use stamps that do not have enough paper around them.
Please encourage everyone you know to save stamps for us too.
10 lbs of stamps = approximately 5 Bibles for distribution.

About the Canadian Bible Societys Used Stamp Program

Stamps collected from donations across Canada are combined to create charity boxes and
are sold to stamp collectors and vendors. The revenue generated from the stamps allow CBS
to purchase Bibles for Canadian prison ministry.

A Different Way of Praying: The Practice of the Presence of God
Pat Taylor
I first encountered this book as a little 3x4 reader of my wifes. It is by Brother
Lawrence, a Carmelite lay brother in France, and was originally published in
1693, shortly after his death. There are four reported conversations with him
and 15 letters by him to various persons. A new translation came out in 1981,
by E. M. Blaiklock, including the conversations, 16 letters, a section entitled
The Spiritual Principles of Brother Lawrence, written by Brother Lawrence
himself, along with a final section, The Ways of Brother Lawrence, by his
Abb.

Advent ~ Dec 2014 Edition

My factual introduction focuses upon persons and the reproduction of words, conveying
quite the opposite of Brother Lawrences intention: he enjoyed the presence of God and that
gave him his reason for living and doing.
Brother Lawrence was a simple soul: he worked in the kitchens and shopped in the markets
for the monasterys food and drink; that is where he practised being aware of God.
Blaiklock met the book as a young man and fairly new Christian. His edition begins with an
introduction in which he explains the impact Brother Lawrence had on him.
When I first took seriously the challenge of the title, I misinterpreted it as meaning having
to talk to God all the time. I recall saying to my wife, how can I be talking to God and
concentrating on an experiment or a problem simultaneously? She gave me the clue.
From time to time, we would both be in the same room together, concentrating on our own
things - not talking. But, it would be a very different sort of feeling, or atmosphere, when
only one of us was there.
My presence made a difference to her and hers to me - that gave me what I needed.
For the reality is that one is never apart from God but the practise aspect is needed
because habitually we dont recognize he is always so close. We need to train our
awareness. As Brother Lawrence puts it:
The most holy practice, the nearest to daily life, and the most essential for the
spiritual life, is the practice of the presence of God, that is to find joy in his divine
company and to make it a habit of life, speaking humbly and conversing lovingly with
him at all times, every moment, without rule or restriction, above all at times of
temptation, distress, dryness, and revulsion, and even of faithlessness and sin.
First and foremost allow us to welcome you! As a Church, we are more
than a building used for celebration; we are a community of faith that
provides support and nurture in the Christian life. We have many
opportunities for involvement in our various Ministries. We look
forward to you joining us!

Every Champion Deserves the Chance to Shine!
Childrens Health Foundation
For those of you who have attended St. Aidans for the last
number of years, you may recall hearing the name Andie
Morrison on our Public Prayer List.
Andies great-grandmother Maxine Morrison is a dedicated
member of our community, who recognizing the power of prayer
has asked for our support with regard to
Andies health and well-being.
Andie has a rare blood disorder called Diamond-Blackfan
Anemia (DBA). At only 6 months of age, she had already
received 11 blood transfusions. Since then, Andie has
undergone a blood transfusion every three weeks, totaling
nearly 100 transfusions. Until they find a solution for DBA,
Andie will continue to rely on these transfusions, as well as
nightly doses of intravenous medication to stay healthy.
Described as warm, caring and wise beyond her years, even
after all that she has been through, Andie cant wait to become
a nurse when she grows up, so that she can help kids like her
to be brave during scary procedures.
Andie is a perfect example of the resiliency and bravery of the young patients at Childrens
Hospital. She will be representing the Childrens Hospital as their 2014-2015 Champion
Child, presented by Walmart. We are delighted to share her incredible journey with you
and on behalf of her family, appreciate your continued prayers.

Intercessory Prayer
The Revd Greg Smith
The purpose of Intercessory Prayer in public worship is to uplift the
immediate concerns of the gathered assembly for the purpose of expectantly
looking for and listening to Gods movement within these concerns for the
world, for one another and for ourselves and to respond to the dominical
command of Jesus to love one another as we, intentionally and with
purpose, support one another in our vulnerabilities and joys. This kind of intercessory
prayer will likely and necessarily change from week to week when we gather.
At St. Aidans there is also an active Prayer Circle comprised of individuals whose ministry
it is to pray in a daily and ongoing way for expressed concerns within the parish. This is
the kind of prayer that provides individuals with the reassurance of a supportive and
healing embrace of prayerful concern to surround us in times of need. Some prayer
requests that come to this ministry might not be appropriately those that would make it to
the context of a public worship gathering.
In order to strengthen both of these prayer ministries at St. Aidans, an addition to the front
page of the web site has been made offering the opportunity for individuals to make Prayer
Requests to the prayer team. They are assured that, unless otherwise instructed, this
request will stay before the team for three months.
In addition, the Ministry of Worship Team with the support of the Rector are
introducing a change in our pattern of public intercessory prayer beginning the First
Sunday of Advent, as follows:
1. A large and visible Intercessory Book will be placed on a lectern in the body of
the church in a visible location. As individuals arrive for Sunday worship, they
are invited to enter personal prayer requests in the book. These requests will be
included, on that Sunday only, by the person leading the intercessory prayers.
There will be a column in the book to ask for the request to also be passed along to
the prayer team. The prayer team, unless otherwise directed, will continue to pray
this request for three months.
2. If you are requesting prayer in public worship for another person, please make
sure that you have their permission to do so. Diocesan guidelines recommend only

the use of first names for privacy reasons, but if you wish to include the last name,
please ask permission.
3. Prayer candles will also be provided near the Intercessory Book. Individuals
should feel free to light one of these candles as a sign of prayer intention at any time
before the service or at the time of communion, even if a prayer request has not been
written down.
4. There will also be opportunity during the public prayer time for individuals to
speak names for prayer aloud or to hold names in the silence.
It is our hope that these actions will enhance the life of prayer within the community of St.
Aidans. Feedback from the congregation is helpful, after a time to experience the changes.
