broken world.
Advent is the beginning of our Church year. It is a time that allows us to sing to God to
hasten to come and dispel the darkness: to come deliver hopeto set us free.
I pray that as you all prepare for Christmas, you are able to come and join
us. Again this year we will offer Advent Vespers as an opportunity to pray
mid-week and we will of course be together each Sunday as we tell the
stories of John the Baptist, Mary and her Magnificent Song and Elizabeth
and her song of praise.
As Christmas approaches, I pray that you know the abiding Light of Christ. I give
thanks for you all and for our community at St. Aidans.
This year has been one of much growth and positive change. I look forward to ministering
with you in the year ahead of us. I pray that we continue to strive to be a reflection of
Emmanuel in our community.
Catherinanne and I wish you all a blessed and peaceful Christmas and offer prayers
for fulfillment for you all in the New Year.

The new lawn sign has been installed with accompanying parking lot signs due to the fine
efforts of Doug Wilson-Hodge.
A new working financial model, including the hiring of a bookkeeper, overseen by financial
specialist Andra ONeill is now in place using the framework of Powerchurch, a computer
software program designed for Church organizations.
A new curriculum for our young teens has been purchased and implemented by Alexandra
Strong. As Alexs time with us is quickly drawing to a close, we ask for your prayers as we
initiate a search for a new Children and Youth Leader.
Our Silver Saints and Parish Nursing Ministries have far exceeded expectations to date.
The storage locker, once used for items recovered from Hosannas, has been emptied and
closed. The removal of the stained glass windows from Hosannas has been delayed as the
new owner waits for the city to make physical changes to Hyde Park Road before attempting
major renovations. This however is seen as a positive as the windows will remain in a secure
environment with no storage costs to us.
The kitchen renovation plan has been passed through formal approval by our Parish
Council and is scheduled for completion in September of 2015.

We are on the way to completing our fundraising goal of $13,000 through two financially
successful Spring and Fall Community Sales, our Charity Golf Tournament in June, Treats
and Trivia in November, the launch of our new Aidans Wear clothing line, and of course
our annual Jazz By The Bog concert series. Your continued support of these events is
appreciated.

Financial Update
Andra ONeill
This has been a year where the longstanding commitments of those
who have been stewards of both St. Aidans and the Church of the
Hosannas for many years past have had their financial gifts added to
and bolstered by many new members of our community.
The spirit that has been alive and well at St. Aidans for many years
is working in very visible ways and now, financially, we are moving
from survival to mission.
May we prayerfully approach the end of 2014 and beginning of 2015 open to the will
of God for our community, our families and the mission of St. Aidans.

Offerings: Representing the primary source of our income, our offering total is measured in
three areas:
1. Envelopes (57% of offerings): $7, 000 behind budget tracking at about $800 below
budget on a monthly basis. This is a gap that can be closed.
*If just 100 members were able to add $70 to the offering plate at one time before the
end of the year, or 200 members $35, this gap would be closed.
2. Pre-Authorized Giving (40%): has achieved a 7% increase over last years actual
and is very close to reaching a 10% increase.
*Please consider adjusting your monthly plan a little early for next year to help all of
us achieve our fighting budget goal for this area.
3. Open Offering (3%): the much smaller open offering is up over 25% above 2013
actual.
Fundraising: Two of our largest fundraising events took place in the
month of November: The Community Sale on Saturday November 8th and
Trivia & Treats on Thursday November 20th. Thank you for supporting
our community through these events! You may also want to consider
some of our new Aidans Wear clothing line for yourself or as
Christmas gifts for your loved ones.
Income and Rentals: Both are in good shape.
Expenses: We are keeping expenses in line with our budget expectation with a few
exceptions. Hydro is likely to remain above budget through to the end of the year.
We have also increased the hours of our Parish Administrator Rose Perry due to the extra
needs of an ever-expanding church.
We are working on an HST claim that we hope to settle before year end that will even out
some costs that we have at present.
At Vestry, we committed to a 7% increase in givings and felt that 10% was worth
aiming for. I want to thank you all for putting that 7% clearly in sight for us, for
making 10% a possibility and most importantly, for being part of this welcoming,
loving, Christian community.

ADVENT 2014 ~ PG 11
My factual introduction focuses upon persons and the reproduction of words, conveying
quite the opposite of Brother Lawrences intention: he enjoyed the presence of God and that
gave him his reason for living and doing.
Brother Lawrence was a simple soul: he worked in the kitchens and shopped in the markets
for the monasterys food and drink; that is where he practised being aware of God.
Blaiklock met the book as a young man and fairly new Christian. His edition begins with an
introduction in which he explains the impact Brother Lawrence had on him.
When I first took seriously the challenge of the title, I misinterpreted it as meaning having
to talk to God all the time. I recall saying to my wife, how can I be talking to God and
concentrating on an experiment or a problem simultaneously? She gave me the clue.
From time to time, we would both be in the same room together, concentrating on our own
things - not talking. But, it would be a very different sort of feeling, or atmosphere, when
only one of us was there.
My presence made a difference to her and hers to me - that gave me what I needed.
For the reality is that one is never apart from God but the practise aspect is needed
because habitually we dont recognize he is always so close. We need to train our
awareness. As Brother Lawrence puts it:
The most holy practice, the nearest to daily life, and the most essential for the
spiritual life, is the practice of the presence of God, that is to find joy in his divine
company and to make it a habit of life, speaking humbly and conversing lovingly with
him at all times, every moment, without rule or restriction, above all at times of
temptation, distress, dryness, and revulsion, and even of faithlessness and sin.
First and foremost allow us to welcome you! As a Church, we are more
than a building used for celebration; we are a community of faith that
provides support and nurture in the Christian life. We have many
opportunities for involvement in our various Ministries. We look
forward to you joining us!

Every Champion Deserves the Chance to Shine!
Childrens Health Foundation
For those of you who have attended St. Aidans for the last
number of years, you may recall hearing the name Andie
Morrison on our Public Prayer List.
Andies great-grandmother Maxine Morrison is a dedicated
member of our community, who recognizing the power of prayer
has asked for our support with regard to
Andies health and well-being.
Andie has a rare blood disorder called Diamond-Blackfan
Anemia (DBA). At only 6 months of age, she had already
received 11 blood transfusions. Since then, Andie has
undergone a blood transfusion every three weeks, totaling
nearly 100 transfusions. Until they find a solution for DBA,
Andie will continue to rely on these transfusions, as well as
nightly doses of intravenous medication to stay healthy.
Described as warm, caring and wise beyond her years, even
after all that she has been through, Andie cant wait to become
a nurse when she grows up, so that she can help kids like her
to be brave during scary procedures.
Andie is a perfect example of the resiliency and bravery of the young patients at Childrens
Hospital. She will be representing the Childrens Hospital as their 2014-2015 Champion
Child, presented by Walmart. We are delighted to share her incredible journey with you
and on behalf of her family, appreciate your continued prayers.

Intercessory Prayer
The Revd Greg Smith
The purpose of Intercessory Prayer in public worship is to uplift the
immediate concerns of the gathered assembly for the purpose of expectantly
looking for and listening to Gods movement within these concerns for the
world, for one another and for ourselves and to respond to the dominical
command of Jesus to love one another as we, intentionally and with
purpose, support one another in our vulnerabilities and joys. This kind of intercessory
prayer will likely and necessarily change from week to week when we gather.
At St. Aidans there is also an active Prayer Circle comprised of individuals whose ministry
it is to pray in a daily and ongoing way for expressed concerns within the parish. This is
the kind of prayer that provides individuals with the reassurance of a supportive and
healing embrace of prayerful concern to surround us in times of need. Some prayer
requests that come to this ministry might not be appropriately those that would make it to
the context of a public worship gathering.
In order to strengthen both of these prayer ministries at St. Aidans, an addition to the front
page of the web site has been made offering the opportunity for individuals to make Prayer
Requests to the prayer team. They are assured that, unless otherwise instructed, this
request will stay before the team for three months.
In addition, the Ministry of Worship Team with the support of the Rector are
introducing a change in our pattern of public intercessory prayer beginning the First
Sunday of Advent, as follows:
1. A large and visible Intercessory Book will be placed on a lectern in the body of
the church in a visible location. As individuals arrive for Sunday worship, they
are invited to enter personal prayer requests in the book. These requests will be
included, on that Sunday only, by the person leading the intercessory prayers.
There will be a column in the book to ask for the request to also be passed along to
the prayer team. The prayer team, unless otherwise directed, will continue to pray
this request for three months.
2. If you are requesting prayer in public worship for another person, please make
sure that you have their permission to do so. Diocesan guidelines recommend only
ST AIDANS ANGLICAN CHURCH: BY THE WAY NEWSLETTER

the use of first names for privacy reasons, but if you wish to include the last name,
please ask permission.
3. Prayer candles will also be provided near the Intercessory Book. Individuals
should feel free to light one of these candles as a sign of prayer intention at any time
before the service or at the time of communion, even if a prayer request has not been
written down.
4. There will also be opportunity during the public prayer time for individuals to
speak names for prayer aloud or to hold names in the silence.
It is our hope that these actions will enhance the life of prayer within the community of St.
Aidans. Feedback from the congregation is helpful, after a time to experience the changes.
