# ENGINEERING MECHANICS - STATICS

Presentation:

RENE S. ARCILLA
Civil & Geodetic Engineer

ANALYSIS OF STRUCTURES:
Purpose of analysis: determine how the loads applied to structures are distributed
throughout the structure.
Limit of analysis is on pin-connected types, i.e., assemblages of bars fastened by
smooth bolts, pins or hinges.
Two types of structures will be studied pin-connected trusses and pin-connected
frames.
For trusses internal force in a bar is directed along the axis of the bar.
For frames members are subjected to bending action.

After learning how these types of structures are constructed, the internal forces
holding their various members in equilibrium create concurrent or non-concurrent
systems of forces in equilibrium.

ANALYSIS OF STRUCTURES:
Joint B of the truss shown in the figure is subjected to the forces exerted by the three
members AB, BC, and BD. Members AB and BD are in the same straight line, but BC
is inclined at an angle of degrees with this straight line. Show that the force in BC
must be zero. Generalize this result and then show that the force in members CD, DE,
EF, FI, HI, KH, and JK is also zero.
