Making the extractor cut on a virgin barrel
If you dont have a mill what are your "favorite" methods to do this? I have a few ideas how but
I'm sure there are some "home grown" methods to make it easier and look right when its done
that I havent thought of. I have 14 virgin barrels to do...

It could be done with a file if you were careful and took your time, I have done 2 extractor cuts
on custom mosins I built using a dremel and you would not know it unless I pointed it out.

The cut for the AK-74 is simple; can easily be filed so it looks and functions fine. The AKM is a
different animal and is best done with a milling cutter. One could do it with a Dremel and small
files I guess, and if one is quite handy with these it would look and function fine.
If I did not have a milling machine I would farm it out and hope the machine shop has some
small Woodruff keyseat cutters to make the handguard keyseats look correct and stay the
proper size.

The slot for the handguard retainer's locking pin is easily cut with a small round file, and I
generally do this one completely by hand even though I do have a milling machine. By the time
I set up the parts; measure and mark the barrel and set it in the mill correctly and get the
proper cutter ready I can do two of these by hand and they look and function correctly.
Best Regards,

BTW there are NO hard and fast rules on this cut. Use a grinder or a dremel. The smoothness
comes with experience. You may want to practice on a metal chunk before destroying a good
barrel. Here is a late model Bulgarian factory cut. This is what "the factory" is doing now.
The cut out should be wide enough to accommodate the area marked below on the bolt face. And
yes, the bolt head does turn/swing to lock.

I like to use my dremel and a file.... I don't own a mill but I have never used a drill press to do
something like this your having to drill to the side and not up and down so I don't really think it
would work... I maybe an end mill but I wouldn't chance it.....

If one two I'd use a dremel if need be, but with that many as stated above you may want to
farm it out to restoreit or even a local machine shop if they have an idea of what you need.
