Further Practice

If your Club wants to practise more, choose one or two of the following activities to try
after your meeting. Choose the ones that interest you most or that look most fun.

1 Find out about and give a presentation to your English class on the author of the Graded Reader
you have just read. Have a look at the Author data sheets on this site or other reputable websites,
and make a poster or PowerPoint presentation to show your class what you have discovered.
2 Find out about and give a presentation to your English class on the historical period or the places in
which the story is set. Use Worksheet 7 to help you, and make a poster or PowerPoint presentation
to show your class what you have discovered.
3 Form two teams within your Book Corner Club and think of twelve quiz questions to ask the other
team about the story you have read, eg ,What does Dorothy use to kill the Wicked Witch? When
you have read three or four different Graded Readers, hold a Big Quiz day and have fun with the
questions.
4 Write a Book Corner Club summary of the story (dont include the ending!) to put on the wall of
your classroom and to recommend the story to other classmates.
5 See number 4, but draw a comic strip and use it to make a poster illustrating the story. Give a
presentation to your English class, telling them the story and showing them the comic strip. You
could then invite them to guess how the story ends and read the Graded Reader for themselves to
find out.
6 Re-write the story as a simple radio play or film. Practise it and perform it you can ask someone to
film you or record a podcast and upload it onto a Book Corner Club webpage.
7 If there is a film of the book, watch the film together. You could then talk about the similarities or
changes made in the story, discuss whether you think the actors were the best choices for their role
(Keanu Reeves in Dracula, Ewan McGregor in Emma, Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries etc.),
and write a review of the film.
8 Create a Book Corner Club website or blog and post reviews, comments, more information, projects
etc. on it. You can also use it to arrange meetings and help choose the next Graded Reader.
