it is not simple to assemble in a concise manner all the important qualities of a good
researcher. Knowing the difficulties lying ahead, I would like to suggest the following
qualities: interest, motivation, inquisitiveness, commitment, sacrifice, excelling, knowledge,
recognition, scholarly approach, and integration. The characterization and understanding of
these qualities would be extremely helpful to those who are beginning the exciting field of
research. To be a good researcher first requires the intention to be involved in research and
immediately thereafter to show a dedicated interest to do the best research possible. From
there we must accumulate the knowledge needed to advance the current ideas already
existent in the research world. The intention of this writing is to introduce 10 qualities that I
consider essential for a good researcher to succeed.
There is a researcher within us just waiting to be unleashed.
Being good according to Webster's Universal Dictionary and Thesaurus (2005)
means having the right and proper qualities. If these qualities are needed to
achieve certain objectives, then success is a consequence of being good. That
is, a good researcher should possess the right
and desirable properties or qualities in order to succeed in his researches.
What are these good qualities of a researcher? One may say, all the good
values. Just name it. Yes, its true. However, it is just too broad to consider all
of them. We can trim down the good values into more practical and specific.
To be more specific, let us divide these good qualities into three: The Basics
qualities, the good qualities on the process, and the good qualities upon
success. The basic qualities of a researcher are intelligence, honesty, curiosity
and initiative, enough knowledge, and good in oral and written
communication.
A good researcher shows an open mind about things. He does not just take
things by themselves but explores new grounds. He adopts the philosophy
of thinking beyond the box, leaving out the conventional for something
innovative. A good researcher treads the unknown frontier.
Evidences of this thirst for new information can be observed in people who
do not stop learning and those who maintain an open mind for new
possibilities to happen, even when everything appears to have been
discovered or studied, or options exhausted.
Two hundred years ago, has anyone ever thought that man could go to the
moon, or explore the depths of the sea? Or tap on the keys of the
cellphone to communicate with another person so far away?
