Technical situation
.
The broker-dealers technical requirements involved replacing the existing slow and visually
challenged tool set (Excel and PowerPoint) with an easy to use, highly graphical, flexible, and fast
to market solution. Additionally easily replicating/importing a clients existing portfolio was a
necessity. Performing on-the-fly ad- hoc what-if analysis for new investment ideas was a key
criterion. Providing an open architecture that included connecting directly to flat files (xls, csv) as
well as RDMs (SQL/Oracle) was on the list. Large data sets powered by 1010data also needed
to be easily accessed and integrated. A plethora of complex calculations needed to be simplified
into stunning graphically displays.

Previous attempts to upgrade the existing spread sheets had failed because potential solutions
required extensive and expensive customization.

Solution
The final result was a new area within the broker-dealers website; custom branded, browser
based, and secure section. Based on the response institutional investors and traders love this
cutting edge portfolio and modeling tool.
USEReady was selected to help identify a potential approach because of its twin expertise in
fixed income and visual analytics. USEReady recommended Tableau Software as a solution;
Tableau Desktop (publisher) and Tableau Server (browser based viewer) both were implemented
in just six weeks.
A trader dashboard for portfolio analysis and modeling was developed using SCRUM
methodology. USEReady worked side by side with the traders to see what they see when they
review a portfolio and look for alpha enhancing ideas. The fixed income portfolio dashboard
powered by Tableau was actually a workbook with six dashboards. The intuitive application flow
has allowed investor and trader to navigate complex fixed income research. It has permitted both
to be literally on the same page and therefore move smoothly through the process.
