PROBLEMS
M5.5
Consider the temperature control system shown in figure. Specify the necessary PIJC
hardware (PLC plus the required I/O modules). Design a ladder logic diagram so that
the PLC controls the temperature using the temperature sensor as feedback signal and
the proportional fuel valve as the controlled actuator. The logic should include input
switches to start and stop the control system as well as display status information to
the operator.

M5.6
Consider the speed control system shown in Fig. 9. I 2. The objective is to run the
conveyor 1 at a programmable speed at which that value is entered by the operator via

an operator interface device. Conveyor 2 is meant to run as if it is mechanically geared

to conveyor 1, and the gear ratio is also programmable by the operator. Specify the
necessary 1LC hard ware and design the LLD program.

M5.7
Consider the position control system shown in figure. Our goal is that when the
operator pushes the "Start" button, the automatic cycle of the positioning table starts.
When the "Stop button is pushed, the table is supposed to stop to a predcfi ned home
position. When the start button is pushed, the motor is to move in :1 direction to seek
the home" sensor. If it reaches one of the limit switches before reaching the home
sensor, then it must reverse direction, go past the home sensor. stop, and come back to
turn ON the home sensor from a predefined direction, then stop and establish a
home reference. After that. the motor is supposed to make incremental forward and
reverse motions, i.e., five in a row. l.0-in. displacement motions sepamted by 100msec delay between the completion and start of each motion. Specify the necessary
PLC hardware, and design the program logic.

M5.8
Consider the circuit shown in figure. What happens if the seal-in circuit at points 3
and 4 is not connected? lf the seal-in circuit is not connected, and we change the
Start' switch to a latching switch (not momentary), how is the operation of the
circuit different than the seal-in circuit operation? (Consider that we started the ciruiit,
and stopped it with the Stop" switch. How would you restart the system?)
