Description of Study Unit


Year 2 students must carry out a project for the host organization that should cover some of the
subjects included during their 1st and 2nd year programme of studies. A mentor will be appointed
for each student; the role of the mentor is to assist the student to develop practical skills in the
areas of tourism, culture and heritage-related areas such as theatre, hospitality, museums and
events.
Students should work on an autonomous basis on the project, although support may be provided
as necessary by the mentor and the university coordinator in order to fulfil the requirements of the
task required for this module.
Duration: In the region of 100-150 hours

Aims & Objectives


The aim of the study-unit is to orient the student to the world of work and to equip the student
with useful life skills: in addition students will be involved in worthwhile projects that will enrich
their CV.
The host organization will receive a finished report/project/task, which will be retained for its
own use. Subsequently the coordinator will review the work at the host organizations discretion
and will expect a report detailing the experience gained by the student from start to finish,
including but not limited to challenges encountered during the placement period.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Skills (including transferable generic skills): By the end of the study-unit the student
will be able to:

Develop good verbal communication skills;


Relate well with subordinates, co-workers and superiors;
Manage his/her own life skills, in particular develop important life-skills such as
assertiveness, taking responsibility for his/her own actions and working in groups together
with people from different walks of life.
Vast research knowledge;
Presentation/communication skills.

Method of Assessment
Log Book (10% of marks)
Report (70% of marks)
Report:
A report is expected from 2nd year students depicting their work experience from start to finish of
the placement. This report should also cover skills acquired during the exposure with the host
organization limited to the project/task assigned.
Word count:
2,500 words, not including executive summary.
Format of Report should be as follows:
Executive Summary;
Table of Contents;
Introduction;
Main Body;
Conclusion.

Presentation (20% of marks)


Description:
A 10 min. presentation to be delivered to a small group including the coordinator
Format:
Average of 5 slides and verbal presentation to correlate presentation
Q&A will be allowed.

Log Book and the formal report (totalling 80%) are to be handed in by Friday, 22nd May 2015, to
the Administration Office, Room 235 at the Institute for Tourism, Travel and Culture.
Presentations are planned to be held during the week commencing Monday 25th May 2015.
However this will be communicated to students at a later stage.
