Warhammer Warbands

8th Edition

Warbands Rules:
Warbands (8th ed.) is a gaming system that follows the exact rules for
Warhammer Fantasy Battles 8th edition with the following exceptions:
1. No army list organisation restrictions i.e. any models and war gear
may be taken within the stated points allowance.
2. No minimum sizes for unit selection. Units are still limited to the
maximum sizes stated in their rule books.
3. Every model has the Independent Character special rule, unless it
is otherwise stated that the model cannot join other units.
4. Warbands may not include more than eight units i.e. a Warband
may not start the game with more than eight units, and models
may not leave the unit they are in (thus forming their own unit) at
any time if the number of units in play in that Warband is eight at
that time.
5. The Warband leader must be a lord, hero, or unit champion. Note:
Vampire Counts and Tomb Kings are not required to have a
spellcaster as their Warband leader.
6. Unit champions may equip up to 15pts of magical items.
7. Warbands may be chosen up to a maximum of 500 points. Points
limits must be agreed before each game as normal. 125 points is
recommended for short duration games for beginners.

Creating a Warband:
Faction:
The player must choose a faction from any of the following Warhammer
Fantasy Battles armies: Beastmen, Brettonia, Daemons of Chaos, Dark
Elves, Dwarves, High Elves, Lizardmen, Ogre Kingdoms, Orcs & Goblins,
Skaven, The Empire, Tomb Kings, Vampire Counts, Warriors of Chaos,
Wood Elves. Factions from the End Times may also be taken.
Warband leader:
One model (chosen from the lord, hero, or unit champion options) must
be nominated as the Warband leader. This model counts as the army
general for all intents and purposes e.g. friendly models within 12 may
use the generals leadership. The leader must be given a Character
Archetype detailed below.
Characters:
Any models chosen from the lord, hero, or unit champion options from
the faction army book can be taken in accordance to the manner
described for them. In addition every such model must be given a
Character Archetype upon joining the Warband, as detailed below.
Unit champions may equip up to 15pts worth of magical items even if
they are not normally allowed to do so.
Hirelings:
Any models chosen from the core, special, and rare options from the
faction army book can be taken in accordance to the manner described
for them.

Campaigns:
A Warband campaign consists of a series of consecutive battles played
out between two or more Warbands, usually following a narrative of
some form. Players must keep track of ongoing losses, injuries,
recruitment, items, experience, and victory points.
Warband management:
This refers to the management of models in your Warband.
One use only items:
One use only items are used up in campaign games and are not carried
over into future games.
Losses:
After each game roll a D6 for each hireling model that was removed as a
casualty, a model will survive to fight another day on the following result,
dependent on its class:
Core = 4+
Special, rare = 3+
Injury:
After each game roll a D66 for each lord, hero, or unit champion model
that was removed as a casualty and consult the Character Injury Chart
and apply the result.
Retirement:
If a character sustains such injuries that the owning player considers
them to no longer be a viable part of the Warband the model may be
retired. The model is removed from the Warband, the player loses a
victory point, and a new character must be selected to replace the
retired character. The new character may not carry identical equipment
to their predecessor.

Resource management:
This refers to the management of resources that your Warband accrues over
the course of the campaign.
Victory Points:
Victory Points (VPs) are earned over the course of the campaign and indicate
how well each player is doing. The player with the highest VP score at the
end of the campaign wins. Victory points are typically earned for winning
and or completing objectives in battle scenarios e.g.
+2 VPs for winning the game under scenario rules.
+1 VP per narrative objective achieved.

Experience:
Gaining experience:
After each game Warbands earn experience points (Exp) depending on how
they performed. Each Warband gains 25 Exp for participating. On top of this
each warband gains Exp equal to the points value that they killed during the
game.
Additionally, at the start of a campaign a Warband gets Exp equal to the
difference between the number of points spent on the Warband and the
points limit for the first game.
Using experience:
After each game Exp earned by a Warband must be spent after a battle and
cannot be hoarded.
Exp can be spent to:
Replace fallen members of the Warband with new recruits of the players
choice (up to the agreed points limit).
Purchase new equipment (including magical items) for the Warband (up to
the stated allowance for each model).
Buy victory points. 1 VP = 75 Exp
Buy a re-roll on the character injury table 1 reroll = 25 Exp

The Game:
Deployment:
Players roll a D6, the highest rolling player chooses their own deployment
zone and deploys one unit, followed by the next highest rolling player, and
so on until all players have deployed all of their units.
Turns:
Players roll off for each game turn and go in that order.
Game duration:
The game last 6 turns

Narrative Objectives:
Games will take place based around a variety of scenarios, and each
scenario will have its objectives to decide the victor. In addition, Player will
also attempt to complete narrative objectives.
At the start of each game, each player will roll D6 and consult the table
below. If the player achieves their objective by the end of the game they
will be rewarded with 1 VP.
