Thought for the month: A Christmas Wreath is more than simply something pretty.
From the Pastors Desk
Most of us are beginning to get out the decorations to prepare our homes for the Christmas season. The
Christmas wreath is one of those decorations and has been hung on doors for centuries. Have you ever
wondered about the tradition of hanging a wreath?
The term wreath is linked to the word wrist, with both terms forming a continuous physical circular shape.
It also comes from Middle Englishs wreathe, meaning a twisted band or ring of leaves or flowers in a
garland. The circle or ring shape is symbolic of eternity or eternal life, because the shape has no beginning or
end. In ancient Rome, it was so revered that people used decorative wreaths as a sign of victory. It is thought
that this is where the hanging of the wreaths on doors came from, as well as, the wreath as a crown on the head
of a winner of a contest.
Christmas wreaths are generally wound from evergreens. The evergreens symbolize life in the dead of winter.
Often wreaths are left hanging all winter, reminding us of Christmas, of eternity, of life in winter. Sometimes
theyre left hanging simply because its too cold to bother taking them down.
The Advent Wreath is part of our Christmas tradition that is centuries old. The Pre-Christian Germanic people
during the cold December darkness of Eastern Europe, gathered wreaths and lighted fires as signs of hope in the
coming of spring and renewed light. In the 16th century, Catholics and Protestants alike used wreaths as symbols
to celebrate their hope in Christ, the everlasting light. This tradition spread from Germany to other parts of the
world.
Traditionally, the Advent Wreath is made up of four violet and rose candles in a circle of evergreens with a fifth
white candle in the middle. Each Sunday of Advent a candle around the wreath is lit, representing peace, hope,
love and joy. The last candle, the one in the center is called the Christ candle. The lighting of this candle takes
place either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day signifying the birth of Jesus Christ. Most Christian traditions
make the lighting of the Advent Wreath a part of their Christmas preparation.
If you havent hung your wreath yet, or even if you have, any time you see one this winter you might consider
the wreaths symbolic and spiritual meanings of eternity and life. These symbols are all tied up in the reason for
Christmas the birth of Christ, who proclaimed eternity and new life.
Best wishes to you and your family for a safe and healthy Christmas season.
Blessings,
Pastor Pat

NO Salt
The trustees are reminding us
that using salt on the marble
steps of the church damages
the surface. They have placed
plain sand and a nonsodium based ice melt in the
church to be used on all
walkways and the steps
instead.
Thanks,
