Highlands will always have a place for Santa you can see him
Saturdays in December (except December 6)
on Main Street across from Reeves Hardware.
anta is coming to town! Each year as Santa prepares his list and checks it twice he takes time out
of his busy schedule to visit Highlands to hear the
wishes of children old and young. This year he will be at
the old Chamber of Commerce location on Main Street
across from Reeves Hardware and in front of Mountaintop Wine Shoppe. Hell be there Saturdays in December
before Christmas from 11:00-3:00, except December 6
when rumor has it that he will be a special guest at our
Christmas Parade.
Santa enjoys kicking back, relaxing and hearing the
wishes of Highlanders and visitors so dont miss your
chance to visit and put in those last minute requests.
This is also a great opportunity to capture those memories by having your picture taken with Santa. More than
one family Christmas card photo has been taken with
Santa on these special Saturday visits.

The Highlands Community Christian Chorales Christmas Program
heralds the glories of the holiday season. Everyone is invited at 5:00 P.M.
Saturday, December 13, and Sunday, December 14,
at the First Baptist Church of Highlands.
ts a true sign that the Christmas season has arrived when the
Highlands Community Christian Chorale performs.
This year, Highlands vocalists will be joined by voices from
Sky Valley and Franklin to create a beautiful blend of heavenly voices at the First Baptist Church of Highlands, 220 Main
Street, at 5:00 P.M. Saturday, December 13, and 5:00 P.M. Sunday, December 14.
Plan to stay for the reception following the Sunday concert.
The ladies of the Church are well-known for their delicious goodies at these receptions.
This years performance will be the 20th year that the chorale
has blessed the community. Beginning at Labor Day, each year
members of local churches gather each Monday night to hone
their skills.
Leadership of the chorale rotates among the various choral
directors of area churches. This years director is Joe Powell of
the First Baptist Church. Joe and his wife retired to Highlands
after he completed a career as a high school band director. His
plans for a leisurely retirement life have been postponed as he
enjoys serving as choir director at First Baptist and leads the
Highlands Male Chorus.
Joe has compiled a list of traditional Christmas carols that
everyone knows. Youll hum along to Silent Night and The
Little Drummer Boy (with accompaniment from Joes grandson on the drums). Members of the Baptist Church always look
forward to a performance of Silent Night with vocals by Carolyn Patton accompanied by June Hogue on the piano. This
is Joes first opportunity to lead the chorale. He has worked
closely with artistic director Marybeth Brody to select an
unforgettable playlist.
The dedication of each of these singers is amazing, says
Powell. They give up their Monday nights for practice, they
contribute $10 each toward the cost of music, all for the love of
singing and to get to renew old friendships with folks they dont
see except during this season.
You will get a chance to sing with the chorale during the singalong number. Come early as the church tends to fill up quickly.
Be prepared to share a small donation to help the chorale offset
the cost of music.

Street early to ensure they get a good view and to chat with
neighbors and visitors. The parade route spans three blocks, so
there should be plenty of room for everyone.
If youre part of a group that would like to be included in the
lineup, contact the Highlands Chamber of Commerce at (828)

If youre thinking of inviting Santa to participate in your entry, please note that hes already accepted the Chambers invitation to appear at the end of the parade. You wouldnt want

he Highlands Cashiers Players once again present their annual Holiday Reading at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, December 18,
at the Highlands Performing Arts Center.
HCP Board members, cast and crew alike join together at the
Highlands Performing Arts Center to offer this gift to the community. Each year is a different festively wrapped package that
usually includes poetry, humorous readings, spiritual messages
and song. The 2014 program will be especially touching with a
staged reading of A Christmas Memory, by Truman Capote.
A Christmas Memory is rich with evocative language that
conjures up life in rural Alabama and the childhood of a boy
who is placed in the care of his elderly relatives. It paints a vibrant picture of the closeness forged between two people who
choose to focus on the simple pleasures and rituals of life.
Several HCP actors will be participating, with veteran performer Dean Zuch serving as narrator. Music of the season will
be included and refreshments will be served after the performance. No tickets or reservations are needed as the program
is and has always been the Players gift to the community. Join
the cast of A Christmas Memory and let them give you a present youll enjoy and long remember.

Cover Artist Jill Wolfe
Her Wings
by Donna Rhodes
ill Wolfe left Atlanta seven years ago to spread her artistic
wings in Western North Carolina. Now a Cashiers resident,
she happily pursues her painting career, showing exclusively at Smitten Gallery in Highlands.
She comes by her love of art naturally. She says, I grew up
in a family of artists. My brother is a sculptor, one sister is an
interior designer, the other an actress, my Dad, an oil painter,
and my Mom, a watercolorist. Even though I was surrounded by art, I didnt start painting until I moved from Atlanta
to Cashiers.
How did she make such a quick transformation from paint
dabbler to pro? She says, I was lucky. Five years ago I took
a beginners class at the Vero Beach Museum of art from renowned instructor and oil painter, Kathleen Staiger. She
pushed me hard and taught me the intricacies of palette setup, layout, brush care, the basics of composition, and precision
technique. Admission to her classes and her intensive color
theory workshop kept me focused when I needed it most. This
past year I have been fortunate to be a student of Cashiers resident Karen Weihs, famed Colorist of the Carolinas. Karen has
encouraged me to be more adventurous in techniques with the
palette knife and layeringand to enjoy the magic of the paint
as it swirls across the canvas.
36 | December 2014 | thelaurelmagazine.com
These two teachers provided the foundation for a traditional approach with contemporary leanings. As Wolfes style
evolves, she sees herself moving toward mixed media. She
says, Currently the subject matter of my work is nature: birds,
animals, pastoral scenes, landscapes, mountains, etc. I have
collected some wonderful pictures of animals in motion that I
want to play with in my studio this winter.
While Wolfe enjoys roaming the diverse galleries of the River
Arts District in Asheville, Mother Nature is her true muse. I
like to celebrate the joy of living in Cashiers. Inspiration comes
from just looking out my window. I wouldnt be as accomplished an artist if I still lived in Atlanta. The solitude of the
mountains makes things clearer. And to be surrounded by Nature is heavenly inspiration.
Speaking of heavenlyits no accident her company name
is Angel House. She believes angels are all around us, guiding
us, helping us as they appear in different guises. She believes
they have guided her this far and trusts they will be with her as
she takes on new pursuits such as plein air painting in the next
few years. She feels South of France could be in her future,
but right now the Mountains of Western North Carolina are
just fine.
When Jill isnt painting, she operates two other businesses:

visits when she comes back to the mountains and where she took
her son to attend camp when he was younger. She was recently
in town for the Highlands Own Arts and Crafts Show in October,
where her art was extremely well received.
Melissa is well known for her attention to detail, which she says,
can also be a curse. I do graphite portraits of people and painstakingly detailed pen and inks. Ironically, I admire the casual loose
style of impressionist art because it is so opposite of what I do.
Having grown up on boats, she thinks that perhaps this may be
where her love of maps originated.
Perhaps my travels on the water from a young age helped develop my insatiable curiosity for all that surrounds me. Highlands
is far from the first map shes done. Currently living in Fairhope on
the Mobile Bay in Alabama, she says many of the bay homes have
maps as focal points of their dcor. She was approached to create updated versions of the area and since then her illustrated cartographies have expanded to include the Dauphin Island Map, the
Tensaw-Mobile Delta Map and individual wedding maps.
Visit MobileBayMaps.com to see her work and order maps for
the gift-giving season. Smith did say that her maps are particularly
popular with men, so keep that in mind when shopping for the guy

Turtleback Falls
About 1/3 mile past Rainbow Falls (take trail at Gorges State Park) is Turtleback Falls, a 20-foot drop
over a curved rockface into a pool that can have strong currents. At lower water levels, its a popular
spot to go sliding and swimming. You should be a good swimmer, since there are no lifeguards. The
rocks and currents can make it dangerous if inexperienced. Do not attempt to slide when water is high,
since the rushing water can take you down river over Rainbow Falls. There are several great vantage
points to enjoy the falls - and the people sliding.

Legends
Yep, the Gavel Goat is just one of many unlikely animals who play a part in the Christmas celebration.
here are many animal legends woven into the Christmas story to which residents of the Carolina mountains
can relate.
Lambs, cattle, donkeys, partridges/turtledoves, and other domestic and wild creatures play important roles in the celebration
of Christs birth. And though not part of the nativity, deer are
dear to those who love Old St. Nick.
You might be surprised to know that other ordinary animals
that populate the Highlands Plateau such as the spider, the
rooster, and the goat also have a place in Christmas lore around
the world.
In a Polish legend spiders wove a blanket (part of the swaddling clothes) for the Baby Jesus the night he was born. Another legend from the Ukraine tells of an old woman who had no
money to decorate her tree or buy gifts. Christmas Eve, while she
slept, spiders spun webs all over her bare tree. Christmas morning, when the suns rays shone through the window the light
turned the webs into strands of pure silver and gold. To this day,
spiders in that part of the world are considered symbols of luck
and prosperity.
In Bolivia the Mass del Gallo, Mass of the Rooster, is observed
on Christmas Eve. Some worshippers even bring roosters to the

Skiing at Sapphire Valley is the product of a man with boundless energy and an unshakeable vision.
fter several years of taking his family from Sapphire Valley over to the Cataloochee Ski Area, Gene Howerdd Jr.

support another southern ski area.
With a prefect north facing slope and the Horsepasture River
at the base, Ski Sapphire Valleys design work started in late
1963. Snow making systems, a rope tow and renovation of the
old farmhouse begin immediately. For the first year, Ski Sapphire Valley provided one lift, a beginner area and toboggan or

In 1964 in addition to the Ski Area, the Hogback Lake real estate development was also began. Anyone who purchased a

But there it is. No denying it. I got the Big C. Now what do I do?
A counselor once told me I was lucky that I was so creative. I
could turn tragedy into art. At the time, I wanted to knock her
into next week. I had no idea how to transform loss into gain.
Funny thing how Life gives you endless opportunities to practice
what you dont knowuntil you know it.
Three decades later, I have become an accomplished poop alchemist. I can gold-plate just about anything, cancer included.
Not that it deserves exultation. But if gold-plating it means turning it into something I can laugh at, or, better yet, make others
laugh at it, then heat up the 14 karat and pour it on.
And what better place to start than my oncologists office?
He had no funny anywhere. All the paintings and graphics on his
walls were of serene scenes. Soothing and pastoral, yes, but I
needed some funny. I pointed that out to him and he agreed.
So I made him some funny to hang on the wall in the form of a
repurposed guitar. Allow me to introduce you to: Cancer Biter.

signed with Western Builders of Sylva Inc. to begin construction and a groundbreaking ceremony was held on November

once the fire sub-station is certified, it will be conveyed to the
Town of Highlands.
This fire sub-station will not only benefit citizens living beyond a five mile distance from the downtown station with
lowered property insurance, but will offer quicker response

CLE held 120 classes in the state-of-the-art lecture hall
on topics ranging from growing dahlias, to the CIA and traveled from Asheville to Cuba! We had two well-attended lectures that were free to the public -- Sandra Mackey, a Middle

Jim Groton shared advice and tips on handling conflict in work

good
things, it started with
a conversation.
In the fall of 1998, Rex Toothman and Christy Kelly were discussing leadership. The conversation centered on whether or
not it was possible to teach
leadership. Each had experienced so-called leadership
training programs, and as they
continued to discuss the possibility of a leadership program in
Highlands they knew it would
have to be something different.
Certainly one unique thing
about Highlands is the fact
that many of its residents have
held leadership positions and
