ANSWER SCHEME CHEMISTRY TRIAL SPM 2014 (PAPER 3)

1 (a) The thermometer reading increases

(b) Different alcohols have different heat of combustion

(c) (i) Type of alcohol

(ii) Heat of combustion

(iii) Volume of water, copper can, glass lamp
(d) Molar mass of methanol: 12 + 4(1) + 16 = 32 g/mol

Number of moles of methanol burnt = 1.28 g/ 32 g/mol = 0.04 mol

Heat given out during combustion of methanol = mc
= 200 g x 4.2 J/g.C x 34C = 28 560 J = 28.56 kJ
Combustion of 1 mole of methanol produce
= 28 560/ 1000 (0.04) = 714 kJ/mol

(g)

(h) -3 328 kJ per mol

(i) 1. Incomplete combustion of alcohol

2. Heat is absorbed by the copper can

(j) (i)The number of carbon and hydrogen atoms in butanol is larger
than that of methanol

(ii) Molar mass of butanol = 4(12) + 10(1) + 16 = 74 g/mol

2 (a) Aim: to investigate the coagulation of latex

(b) Problem statement: How does an acid can coagulate latex?

(c) Hypothesis: Acid speedens the coagulation of latex

(d) Variables: Manipulated: Solution added to the latex

Responding: The condition of the latex

Constant: The volume of the latex
(e) Apparatus: beakers, dropper, glass rod

Materials: latex, ethanoic acid, ammonia solution, red litmus paper and
blue litmus paper
(f) Procedure:

1. About 20 cm3 of latex are poured into each of the three beakers
labelled A, B and C
