Summary (150 to 300 words)
The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) is a massive monitoring project - from
United States of America- which specializes in analyze and check the nation's environment.
This project have the purpose of install for 30 years ,starting in 2017, a complete network of
steel towers around USA ,which will continuously quantify temperature, carbon-dioxide
concentration, an lots of variables in different types of ecosystems including 46 aquatic sitesof the country. In addition, at each NEON site, researchers will check the conditions of ground
and collect insects, birds, plants and small animals.
Also this project will monitor the exchange of carbon dioxide and water vapor between a forest
and the atmosphere so it could help to understand how forests mitigate a very important the
green-house gas emissions and how these affects the weather conditions.
An example of this network its a steel tower of 170 meters which monitors a surrounding forest
-situated in the grounds of the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal,
Virginia.
Finally, we have to emphasis that this ecological big-scale project will not only gather data but
also will public in real time over the Internet that data so everyone will can monitor and
analyses the environment.

The most interesting idea of this big and ambitious project, in my opinion, is
that the data of NEON will be made publicly available at internet. This kind of
information, as Teixeira says, could stimulate some minds to develop particular
investigations and hypothesis.
For example , the first idea which came in my mind while I was reading the
article was that we could verify if there are some specific types of plants which
can deal and counter better with green-house gas emissions , so If the
hypothesis is correct, we could make a massive planting of those species.
On the other, it could be interesting to apply those towers and this kind on
monitoring technology to our country, because our national flora its
extraordinarily diverse; however, there are not a sincere interest in scientific
investigation by the part of the State and the private companies , and also
theres no a strong development of scientific community in our country.
