Question: Naming Customs
You are going to do research on naming customs to help you write a paragraph.
Every culture has special traditions and customs involving names. For example: In the African country of
Ghana, each child in a family is often given a unique surname.
Choose a culture or nationality that you are interested in (not your own!). Visit two or three websites. Find
information about naming customs and traditions in that culture.
Here are some possible topics to research:

The origins of surnames (family names)

How parents choose names
The meanings of names
Name changes in marriage
Number and order of names

Then compare and contrast the naming customs in this culture to the naming customs in your own culture.
Make a Venn diagram like the one below and take notes. This type of diagram helps you see the
similarities and differences between two things.

Then write a paragraph comparing a custom or tradition in two cultures. Write a clear topic sentence. Give
your opinion in a concluding sentence.
When you compare two things, these phrases may be helpful: similar to, same as, both, and like.
When you contrast two things, you can use the phrase different from and connectors such
as but, however, and on the other hand.
Type your paragraph in the box. Click on Save and Submit when you are finished.

Writing Model:

Both Japanese and Canadian cultures have given names and family names, but the Japanese way of
using these names is different from the Canadian way. In Japan, the family name comes first. Only family
and close friends use a persons given name. However, in Canada, the given name comes before the
family name. Canadians use their first names with each other most of the time. It is important to know
about naming customs when you do business with people from other cultures. Using the right name in the
right way is the starting point for a good business relationship.

Writing Model:
In Korea, people like to eat kim chee, or spicy pickle made from cabbage. Korean people also like to sing
in karaoke bars called noraebang. When they are invited to dinner, Koreans usually dont eat everything
on their plate, because they dont want their host to think that he didnt give them enough food. When I do
business with Korean people, I will take them to dinner at a Korean restaurant, and then take them to a
karaoke bar. I will join in the singing to show respect for my guests. If some Korean people invite me to
dinner, I will leave some food on my plate even if I want more to eat!

Question: Body Language
You are going to do research on body language to help you write a paragraph.
Every culture communicates with body language in a different way. For example: Crossing the legs is
polite in some cultures, but not in others. Imagine that you have a friend who wants to make a good
impression on someone from an English-speaking country in a job interview. Visit one or two body
language websites. Find out how body language can be interpreted in English-speaking countries. Here
are some examples of body language:

Facial expressions like smiling and frowning

Eye contact
Gesture (with or without meaning)
Personal space (the distance between you and another person)

Take notes in a chart like the one below:

BODY LANGUAGE

MEANING IN ENGLISH-SPEAKING COUNTRIES

Open-lipped smile

You are friendly and relaxed.

Making eye contact

You are honest.

Looking away

You are dishonest.

Playing with your hair

You are nervous.

Then write a paragraph explaining the meaning of some examples of body language in English-speaking
countries. Give your friend three suggestions on good body language to use in the job interview.
Type your paragraph in the box. Click on Save and Submit when you are finished.

Writing Model:
In English-speaking countries, an open-lipped smile means that you are friendly and relaxed. Also, when
you look at someone directly, it means you are honest. Looking away from the person means you are
untrustworthy. If you play with your hair too much, it means you are nervous. So, when you have a job
interview, you should try a few things: smile with open lips when you greet the interviewer, look directly at
him or her when you answer a question, and try to keep your hands away from your hair!
