IMPROVING STUDENTS MOTIVATION IN LEARNING ENGLISH

USING MODIFIED COOPERATIVE STUDENT TEAM ACHIEVEMENT


DIVISION (STAD) AT FIFTH GRADE OF SD ISLAM RAUDLATUL
AMIN (IRADA)

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

As an introduction this chapter presents the background of the study, statement of


the problem, purpose of the study, significance of the study, hypothesis and
definition of key terms.

1.1 Background of Study


Language is means of communication that is used to transfer information,
ideas, and feelings from one person to another. It is used to communicate both in
written and spoken form. Considering the importance of language, our
government has drawn up English as a foreign language that should be mastered
by the students. In Indonesia, English teaching aims at mastering four basic skills
of language, which include listening, speaking, reading, and writing skill.
Nowadays, the English subject are deleted from the newest curriculum, 2013
curriculum, especially for elementary school. But, it is not the obstacle for many
school to teaching english in their school. Because english is the important
language that should be learn by the students, the elementary school can use
English subject for their teaching and learning process with their own way. And
most of them using the variety way which appropriate for their students and it is
based on the english teachers agreement.
The use of english subject in elementary school should be designed as fun
as possible to reach the students motivation in learning english. Terrel H. Bell
stated there are three things to remember about education. The first one is
motivation. The second one is motivation. And the third one is motivation..
From that statement, it is give enough clear explanation that the focus of teaching
and learning process is students motivation itself. How big the motivation from
the student to learn english will bring the positive effect of it. The teacher should
have their own technique to make the lively classroom and make the students
interest with english subject. And the lively classroom are not measured by the
teacher but also by the response of students itself. So the motivation in learning

from the students will be the great reasons for teaching and learning process in the
classroom.
Based on information obtained from the English teacher at Fifth Grade of
SD Islam Raudlatul Amin (IRADA), it was found that most of students in the
classroom have less motivation to learn english. The students often not pay
attention to the teacher and they also not engaged to the class atmosphere, so they
can not following the teaching and learning process well. It caused by the attitude
from the students who always make a noise in the class and they have no attention
to the teachers instruction. This situation make the material that given by the
teacher are not effective. It is difficult for them to understand the material in
English and they feel not confident to speak english in their classroom. The
teacher think that the students who have less motivation in learning english will
affect the teaching and learning process. Because they will disturbing other
student and make the classroom become uncontrolling at that time. So the
learning process not run well and the material that given by the teacher can not
reached well by the students.
Furthermore, the material at elementary school are not difficult, but to hold
the students attention to follow the rule in the class while English learning is not
easy yet. The motivation and the attitude of the students is negative to the material
in english. It is affect their skill in english and make them difficult to improve
their english language both in the class and out class. Eventhough, most of them
can reach the good score in their test, they have no braveness to improve their
english as well as their score. Whereas, the student must mastering the four skill
in english, listening, speaking, writing, and reading. Maybe the approaches that
given by the teacher is not appropriate with the students need. So the students
feel not interested while the english class and they feel not confident to improve
their skill in english.
Some of the student that have good score in english subject being
individualize to the others. So, their friends who are not good in score will be still
in low score and feel can not increasing their score in this subject. This case make
them think that they can not learning english well and they feel that the material
are diffficult for them. When they have any question about the material in english,

most of student feel afraid to ask to the teacher. It make the material are not
transferring well to the students and they can not remember the material they get
after class. It make them have assumption that english are difficult and confusing
them. So this think make them have less motivation to learn english and negative
attitude to improve their skill in english.
This situation should be as a critical think for the teacher to find the
appropriate strategy in teaching english in elementary school. Not only find the
creative strategy but also developing the media that will be use in teaching and
learning english to improve the students motivation. One of the creative strategy
is using modified cooperative Students Achievement Team Division (STAD).
STAD is one of the cooperative learning method for mixed ability grouping
involving team recognition and group responsibility for individual learning.
According to Slavin (1994), the main idea behind STAD is to motivate students to
encourage and help one another master skills presented by the teacher. The reason
for the selection of this strategy is there will bring good interatction among
students, improve positive attitude towards subject, better self-esteem, increased
interperonal skills for the students.
Some previous research and action research have been done this strategy
and conclude the good result in the end. So, this strategy selected by some review
from others research related to STAD to solve the students motivation problem in
the english classroom. According to Rai (2007) STAD is one of the many
strategies in cooperative learning, which helps promote collaboration and selfregulating learning skills. It is very appropriate strategy for the students to
improve their skills by sharing and collaborating with others. But, here will be a
modification that after grouping, the students will ask to study first by their own
way. The research hope that modified cooperative STAD will make the class
become effective and can improve the students motivation in learning english at
Fifth Grade of SD Islam Raudlatul Amin (IRADA).

1.2 Statement of Problem


Based on the background of the study, the problem of the study are briefly
stated as follow How was the modified cooperative Student Team Achievement

Division can improve the students motivation in learning English at Fifth Grade
of SD Islam Raudlatul Amin (IRADA)?

1.3 Purpose of the Study


In general, this study aimed to describing, analyzing, and explaining the
modified cooperative Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) can improve
the students motivation in learning English at Fifth Grade of SD Islam Raudlatul
Amin (IRADA).

1.4 Significance of the Study


The significance of this study can be viewed from both theoretical and
practical aspects, as describe below :
1. Theoretically, it is expected that this research can be used as emphasis to
determine an approach or strategy to improve the students motivation in
learning English. In this case, the teacher used modified cooperative
Students Team Achievement Division (STAD) strategy to improve the
students motivation in learning English.
2. Practically, this research is expected to give positive input to the English
teacher in the teaching of elementary english material to improve the
students motivation. Based on this research, the English teachers are able
to choose appropriate teaching strategy especially in improving students
motivation in learning English.

1.5 Hypothesis
If the modified cooperative Student Team Achievement Division (STAD)
is applied well, it will improve the students motivation in learning English at
Fifth Grade of SD Islam Raudlatul Amin (IRADA).

1.6 Definition of Key Terms


To avoid misunderstanding and misinterpreting of any terms used in this
class action research, the researcher defines the key words as follow:

1. Motivation is energy changes in a person marked by the emergence of

feelings and reactions to achieve the goal (Mc.Donald in Oemar Hamalik


2003:158). It means that motivation is the kind of self awareness from the
subject to reach and get what they want so that they have an urge to do
something.
2. Student Team Achievement Division is one of the cooperative model

learning which applied by grouping which consist of four or five members


for each group and allowed the students to discuss with their group about
the material so that every member of group mastering the material from
the teacher.
3. Cooperative Learning technique is group learning activity organized so

that learning is dependent on the structured social exchange of information


between learners in group and in which each learner is held accountable
for his or her own learning and is motivated to increase the learning of
other (Kesler 1992: 8). It means that cooperative learning technique can
enhance the motivation and spirit of the students to study in group.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

2.1 Affective Factor


English is the most important language that should be learns by people. Using
English in our daily activity to speak one another can enhance not only for the
ability in speaking but also enhance the confidence to communicate with others.
We can see from some research that done with very briefly conclusion and show
that study English will be very interesting for the learner if the learner itself have
confidence and belief not only to be master of English language, but also to
applying it into an action.
In teaching and learning English we need to see the factors that influence the
learners process. Actually there are many factors, but the affective factors
become most influence students learning. The affective factors are the emotional
factor which influences learning. It can be more important for successful language
learning than the ability to learn. Teacher can build the positife affective for
students by develop the strategies into grouping, deciding the topic or course for
students and choosing the activities that are motivating them.
Considering the use of English as a conversation not enough to change the
ability of someone in mastering English, as a teacher we need to help students to
achieve their interest in a classroom by motivate them. The more students
motivate, the achievement will be better as follow.
Everyone can increase the score in English but only few of them that have
interest feel to learn it continually.
The internal factor of learning english is very important to analyze and
identify by the teacher.

2.2 Motivation
In every teaching and learning process, motivation becomes the foremost
thing that should be attention by both of learner and teacher. Some researches
show that motivation gives the big impact of the teaching and learning process.

According to Mc.Donald, motivation is the change of energy of someone that


shows by feeling and reaction for the goal.

so it will lack the learning process.

2.3 Teaching Strategy for Motivation


In a teaching, the teacher should pay most attention in the way how they teach
and treat the student so the student become interest and motivate to learning.
There are many ways in teaching and some strategy that appropriate to
motivate the student.

Modified Student Team-Achievement Division Strategy

This strategy is modifying from the STAD. It seems similar with STAD, but
the teacher may adding the activity in STAD.

METHODOLOGY

3.1 Research Design


This research is the kind of Classroom Action Research.
3.2 Subjects and Setting
The subject of this research are all of the fifth grade students in SD
IRADA. The students are 25 students in a class which consist of 13 female
and 12 male.
It is one of the Elementary School in .....
