From Nov 29th

Once again we are honoured to be able to

go along and see the Christmas Special
Show at the Cromer Pier.
Running from the 29th November until
the 27th December, it is indeed a show
well worth going to.
On Thursday November 20th, I went
along, with a number of others, to the
Pier Pavilion Theatre to see the cast
of this years show run through
several of their routines.
You have to admire and respect both Di
Cooke (Choreographer) and Ollie Day
(Top Norfolk Entertainer) who together
manage to pull off a great show.

This Christmas Show has been

running for over Ten years.
The dance routines are always
a delight to watch and at the
time of writing this had less
an 10 days to be ready to
dance away and entertain
you and your family.

From The Editor

Over the last few months Ive been
considering whether or not to pack
up running a local free publication
and after spending a great deal of
time thinking about it, I have now
decided to hand most of the day
to day operation over to a good
and well respected friend.
Liz King from Trimingham will be
dealing with all new advertising and
producing the first Crab Tales
in the new year, with my wife, Lis,
continuing to deal with letters and
special events etc. and put it all
together ready to send to the
printers every fortnight.
Like any fortnightly publication it
does take quite a lot of hard work
to get out, ready to be enjoyed by
its loyal readers, of which there
are a great many around.
I will continue to do some editorial
and organise the distribution so you
will see me around Cromer every
fortnight as usual.
In our next issue, the last before
Christmas, I will let you know
more about Liz King.
After over ten years now, I have,
until recently, enjoyed producing
this paper and hope that I have
got it right for most of our
loyal and regular readers.
If I have not. Sorry.
Like all free publications, we can
only exist by selling space to our
advertisers, who, hopefully, will
continue to benefit from placing
their adverts with us.

From now on for advertising please

person contact: Liz King by phone
on 01263 834 965 or by email on:
king495@btinternet.com
What will I be doing meanwhile?
Sailing a bit more and possibly
seeking a part time job that
does not tax me too much.
Always nice to get a response from
Nigel Holmes letter in our last
issue, particularly from Janet
Monro who writes so well.
(See Letter on Page 4)

Dear Philip,

Cabbell Park and Planners

I am concerned about the planners and local
District Councillors and their role in the
Cabbell Park saga.
The Cabbell Park takeover did not happen
without a degree of work behind the scenes
years before the local plan emerged and
the NNDC started its formal takeover.
This local plan would have started life in the
Planning office. It would have involved officers
creating a first draft which would create
considerable work.
Councillors would have then been consulted
or even have had some input to the first and
subsequent drafts. After adjustments the plan
would have been presented to the Council
for approval/amendment.
The plan would then be open for public inspection
and also would have been presented to the Town
Council for comment. The plan would then have
been sent to the Government for approval. This
process would have taken years during which time
neither the trustees nor the football club were
advised that this proposal was being considered.
The Trustees did not take the opportunity to
view the plan when available.
They just did not think that the council would
consider changing the status of Cabbell Park
and if so they would be consulted.

Who would have seen the plans in time to make

an objection? Those who you would imagine
might have considered it to be in the interest of
the town were the local District Councillors.
They kept quiet even though two had close
contact with the football club.
One piece of interesting comment in the plan was
that the clubs lease ran out in 2012. Very few
people knew this even though it was no secret.
It was not the sort of information that was
readily obtained. Where did they get that
information from?
Yours faithfully,
R.F.Richards
Cromer

Dear Philip,

I had my usual weekly trip into Cromer today..

........the NNDC is doing its bit for Tourism,
without warning its upped the car parking
charges by 50%.
It has not been in press, public notices
or on facebook.
One comment I heard said that it had been a
good season so time to put the prices up?
I see that the County Council have started to
charge for street parking and by the spring
you will have to pay to park anywhere..

.........well,thats going to encourage tourists.
The cost so far for the pay points between the
Clifftonville and the Melbourne slope?
12 machines at least at 14k each.....3 separate
Cromer traders told me that the Business Rate
is already higher than in Norwich and now
between the two Councils they want to
close Cromer...well done.
Without a doubt, the added charge of on street
parking will hit traders hard and I gather more
streets are going to pedestrians only adding to
the misery...Rant over.

Dear Sir,

I have never worn a poppy, but every year on

Nov. 11th I pause to remember my grandfather
who died in a German POW camp. He fell out
of his machine-gun tower.
Talking of machine-gun towers, I see that the
Council has removed the towns CCTV cameras.
All but the camera outside their North Lodge
hideout. I suppose it keeps a secure eye on
their motor cars.
I wish I could get elected to the Council. I would
make life very comfortable for myself.
Yours sincerely
Philip Graham

Dear Philip,

The NNDC got in touch last night saying that

Budgens put its car park price up but the sign
states run for NNDC by Kings Lynn Borough
Council....now seriously confused...and now a
new sign has now been put up with all mention
of NNDC dropped..... The Council also states
today they plan to continue to drop prices!!
Really?
Yours Sincerely
Concerned of Cromer.

Dear Philip,

North Norfolk is a beautiful place and many

people enjoy walking all year round, week in,
week out.
How annoying it is therefore that some of our
public toilets are only open at weekends from
November through to March as we found out
when walking through Overstrand recently.
I am sure that this policy must discourage people
from visiting some of our lovely coastal villages
during the winter, which must be having a
knock on effect on local businesses.
Surely North Norfolk District Council could
consider leaving one accessible toilet at each
car park unlocked during the week in these

Dear Philip,

say a Big Thank You to all the members and
the families of About With Friends who have
made our jobs worthwhile.
To the members of our lunch clubs who
have supported us over the last 4 years

To the local businesses we have had the
pleasure of working with and serving.
To our wonderful volunteers who have given
so generously of their time.
The pleasure has all been ours, but the time has
come for us to move on from AWF and with
some sadness we say goodbye for now and
wish you all the very best in the future.

Dear Philip,

I am so pleased that the Holt Day Centre project,

set up under the previous Lib Dem administration,
is still a success. I know that it provided, and
continues to provide, a useful opportunity for
so many people to do this outdoor work and
to gain from it.
During the previous Lib Dem administration the
Holt Country Park gained the coveted green Flag.
I am sure that the local members Cllr Mike
Baker and Cllr Phillip High continue to be
proud of the fantastic facility in their ward?
It would be good to see this initiative developed
in other areas. The volunteers at Sheringham
Little Theatre is another example of a great
success of using volunteers.

North Norfolk
Feline Trust

Many of our Crab Line readers will remember

the day that Jack Kennedy was killed but how
much do any of us know about his life?
After watching a programme on television
about him I decided to find out more.
John Fitzgerald Kennedy (born May 29th 1917
died November 22nd 1963) commonly known
as Jack Kennedy or by his initials JFK, was an
American politician who served as the 35th
President of the United States from January
1961 until his assassination in 1963.
Notable events during his presidency included
the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Cuban Missile
Crisis, the Space Race - by initiating Project
Apollo (which later culminated in the moon
landings) the building of the Berlin Wall, the
African-American Civil Rights Movement,
and the increased US involvement
in the Vietnam War.
After military service as commander of Motor
Torpedo Boats PT-109 & PT-59 during World
War II in the South Pacific, Kennedy represented
Massachusettss 11th congressional district
in the U.S. House of Representatives from
1947 to 1953 as a Democrat.
Thereafter, he served in the U.S. Senate from
that state from 1953 until 1960.
Kennedy defeated Vice President & Republican
candidate, Richard Nixon, in the 1960
U.S. Presidential Election.
At age 43, he was the youngest man to have been
elected to the office, the 2nd-youngest president
(after Theodore Roosevelt), and the first person
born in the 20th century to serve as president.
To date, Kennedy has been the only Roman
Catholic president and the only president to
have won a Pulitzer Prize.
Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas on
November 22nd 1963. Lee Harvey Oswald
was arrested that afternoon and charged
with the crime that night.
Jack Ruby shot and killed Oswald two days
later, before a trial could take place.
The FBI and the Warren Commission officially
concluded that Oswald was the lone assassin.
The United States House Select Committee on
Assassinations agreed with the conclusion that
Oswald fired the shots which killed the president,
but also concluded that Kennedy was probably
assassinated as the result of a conspiracy.
Since the 1960s, information concerning
Kennedys private life has come to light.

On Friday 21st November Jan Balfour, Reader

of Trimingham church visited North Norfolk
Feline Trust where she met Mrs Rees and
Jenny, one of the trustees, plus some of
the fabulous cats.
She was there to give to Mrs Rees the monies
collected at Trimingham church Pet service
earlier in the month. This busy charity is
always very grateful for donations great
or small as all aids the welfare of North
Norfolks felines.

Details of Kennedys health problems with

which he struggled have become better
known, especially since the 1990s.
Although initially kept secret from the general
public, reports of Kennedy being unfaithful in
marriage have garnered much press.
Kennedy ranks highly in public opinion ratings
of U.S. presidents but there is a gap between
his public reputation and his reputation
among academics.
Like so many aged in their early 60s I can well
recall what I was doing on that particular day
back in November 22nd, as it was my younger
brothers birthday and he has just celebrated
his 60th Birthday.
No doubt there were many problems caused
by Kennedy and his administion, including
in particular in Cuba.
But was he a good President of the USA?
I have the general feeling that he was a good
man for the job. What do you think?

What a wonderful surprise on the mulled wine
morning on 22nd November when this cheque
for 5000 arrived from The Douglas & Joanne
Chapman Animal Trust of Attleborough.
Without prior warning except for a telephone
call, two of their trustees arrived and were
very impressed with the cleanliness and
how calm and content the cats were.
They also saw the damage caused by the storm
when the tree branch penetrated the cattery

Christmas
Bazaar

Small Business Bill

Pub campaigners have welcomed a new crossparty clause to the Small Business Bill which
offers new protections for local publicans
against the predatory practices of large pub
owning companies (known as pubcos).
Following a report by the Select Committee, the
Labour Party has campaigned alongside groups
in the industry to call for greater protection for
local pubs and put a stop to unfair treatment
and restrictive practices by pubcos.
The government promised to regulate pubcos
in the Small Business Bill, debated recently
in Parliament, but these fell some way short
of Labours plans & campaigners demands.
Labour therefore supported a cross-party
clause to strengthen the Bill which was
passed in November.
However the Nth Norfolk Labour Party has
expressed disappointment that MP Norman
Lamb voted against it - despite a number of
pubs in the constituency having suffered
under the action of some pubcos.

Lis & I went along to the Christmas Bazaar

held in The Pilgrim Shelter in Trimingham
on Saturday 22nd November.
When I took my camera out of my pocket
I realised that the battery was flat so had
to ask Liz King, the future editor of the
Crab Tales, to send me some pics.

The Pilgrim Shelter was packed with people

looking for Christmas gifts among the many
different stalls, and enjoying the delicious
festive refreshments.
The choice of Tombola prizes was brilliant,
we both won extremely edible prizes and
went home with them after stocking up
with more of Andreas homemade Jam.

Liz King told me when she sent the photos:

Over 185 was raised towards the Pilgrim
Shelters maintenance. Thank you to all
customers and stall holders who made
this Bazaar such a great success.

Denise Burke, Labours Parliamentary Candidate

for Nth Norfolk, said: I am delighted that the
House of Commons has supported this motion
which will give a boost to local pubs if it is
implemented. Ministers must act quickly to
ensure there is a proper statutory code with
a free-of-tie option to the protect local pubs.
If elected in May I will continue to fight for
local pubs in North Norfolk which are such
an important asset in the community.

Doctors Advice?

Friends And
Family Test
From the 1st December all GP practices will
be providing you with the opportunity to
complete the NHS Friends & Family Test
(FFT) questionnaire whenever you use
GP services.
The Prime Minister announced the introduction
of the FFT in May 2012, with two broad aims of:
encouraging improvements in service delivery
by driving hospitals to raise their game.
Since this time the FFT has been slowly
introduced to all areas of the NHS who
provide acute, community, ambulance,
GP or mental health services in England.
The aim of the FFT is to gather patient feedback to improve local services and share good

practice from other areas that are already

using the FFT to improve services.
Your Patient Reference Group at Mundesley
Medical Centre have helped to shape the
development of the FFT tool as they met
with the local project lead for the introduction of the FFT earlier this year.
They asked her to feed back to NHS England
that patients did not want to be asked to complete
the FFT on every trip to the GP which was
the original plan for implementation.
The test simply involves two questions.
The first question is the same for all
GP Practices and is:
We would like you to think about your recent
experiences of our service. How likely are you
to recommend our GP practice to friends and
family if they needed similar care or treatment?
The responses are: Extremely likely; Likely;
Neither likely nor unlikely; Unlikely;
Extremely unlikely; or Dont know
The second question has to be a free text
follow-up question.
For example Please tell us the main reason
for selecting your statement.
Practices can have additional questions as well
if they choose. There is no target for how many
responses we have to collect but each GP Practice
is required to report to NHS England the
answers to question one on a regular basis.
The answers to question 2 or any additional
questions are not shared with NHS England.
The results of the FFT can be found on the
NHS England website www.england.nhs.uk.

And remember: Life should NOT be a journey

to the grave with the intention of arriving safely
in an attractive and well-preserved body, but
rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one
hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly
used up, totally worn out & screaming:
WOO-HOO, what a ride!!

From 1st December, at Mundesley Medical

Centre questionnaire cards will be available.
However we will continue to welcome all patient
feedback positive and negative in many formats
and would encourage anyone with feedback or
a suggestion to use the suggestion box, write or
e-mail the practice, join the Patient Reference
Group or arrange to speak to a member of staff.

AND.....

If you would like to know more about the Friends

and Family Test, details can be found on the
NHS Choices website: www.nhs.uk.

2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer

fewer heart attacks than Brits.

Q: Doctor, Ive heard that cardiovascular

exercise can prolong life. Is this true?
A: The heart is only good for so many beats,
and thats it...Dont waste it on exercise.
Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up
the heart will not make you live longer; it is
like saying you extend life of car by driving
faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.
Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?
A: Oh no. Wine is made from fruit. Fruit is very
good. Brandy is distilled wine, that means they
take water out of the fruity bit so you get even
more goodness that way. Beer is also made of
grain. Grain is good too. Bottoms up!
Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat,
your ratio is one to one. If you have 2 bodies,
your ratio two to one.
Q: What are the advantages of participating in
a regular exercise program?
A: Cant think of one, sorry. My philosophy is:
No pain...good!
Q: Arent fried foods bad for you?
A: You Not Listening! Food fried in vegetable
oil. How can getting more vegetables be bad?
Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a
little soft around the middle?
A: Oh no! When you exercise muscle, it gets
bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if
you want bigger stomach.
Q: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: Are You crazy? Cocoa bean! Another
vegetable! It best feel-good food around!
Q: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming is good for your figure,
explain whales to me.
Q: Is getting into shape important for
my lifestyle?
A: Hey! Round is shape!
Well... I hope this has cleared up any
misconceptions you may have had
about food and diets.

For those of you who watch what you eat,

heres the final word on nutrition & health.
Its a relief to know the truth after all those
conflicting nutritional studies.
1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer
fewer heart attacks than Brits.

3. The Chinese drink very little red wine and

suffer fewer heart attacks than Brits.
4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine and
suffer fewer heart attacks than Brits.
5. The Germans drink a lot of beer and eat
lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer
heart attacks than Brits.
CONCLUSION:
Eat and drink what you like.
Speaking English is apparently
what kills you.
Thanks to Russell Sparkes for this.

The Giving Tree Council To Find

Solutions......
Appeal
Visitors to a Norwich bookstore are being
invited to get in the festive spirit by giving
the gift of a book to a child in care.
Norfolk County Council and Waterstones have
teamed up for the 9th successive year to launch
the Giving Tree appeal, a Christmas project
aimed at bringing joy to the countys looked
after children.
The tree is decorated with dozens of tags which
each represent a child and the book they would
like to receive for Christmas.
Some request specific books, while others
suggest a genre or author that the child likes.
Customers can then buy the books, which are
collected by the County Council to be wrapped
for children in time for Christmas.
The children receive the books on Christmas
Day, as a reminder that people in the county
are thinking of them.
Over the years more than 1000 books have been
donated to children NNC care. Many of whom
have had a very difficult start to their lives and
dont always have happy memories of Christmas,
so this appeal will make a real difference.
The Giving Tree is the initiative of the countys
Virtual School for Children in care, which oversees the education of all looked after children in
Norfolk. The Giving Tree aims to support
reading and learning by giving children
improved access to books.
The tree is in the Castle St. store now and books
need to be bought by December 9th, in order to
reach children in time for Christmas as they are
distributed via the childrens schools. Any books
bought later will be delivered in the New Year.

....for North Norfolk coast

Following the impact of the North Sea tidal

surge last December, NNDC is holding talks
with Bacton Terminal Complex operators to
consider what actions are needed to secure
the nationally important asset.
25% of Britains national gas supply enters the
country through the gas pipelines at Bacton and
the operators of the Bacton Terminal Complex
have jointly worked with NNDC over many
years regarding the management of erosion
risk to the terminal.
The 2013 surge caused new cliff losses and the
BTC operators need to ensure that any further
erosion is managed to prevent this nationally
important infrastructure being put at risk.
Concerns were raised earlier this year with
Norman Lamb MP & NNDC. The terminal
operators had identified the requirement to
pursue an integrated approach which could
involve shared public & private funding to
manage coastal erosion in the local vicinity.
Norman Lamb has since co-ordinated a meeting
between Energy Secretary, Ed Davey MP, Coastal
Minister, Dan Rogerson MP and senior figures
from the Environment Agency, NNDC and the
BTC operators. It was agreed that the preferred
approach to protect the terminal at Bacton would
be to link it to wider works to ensure that other
communities are not put at risk.
These plans are complex and require numerous
stakeholder approvals and involvement.
NNDC & BTC operators are now carrying out
an investigation in to the key considerations
and options which will then help to form a
proposed approach.

The investigation will need to consider coastal

protection options alongside alternatives such
as enabling infrastructure and communities to
adapt to a changing coastline.
The proposed technical solution will be discussed
with the relevant local communities and the key
organisations will report to Ministers early next
year to ensure that progress is made.
Norman Lamb commented: I was determined
to make sure that this meeting took place so that
ministers could understand the need for organisations to work together to protect the coastal
communities alongside the Bacton Terminal.
Dan Rogerson, the Lib Dem Environment
Minister, very recently visited Walcott and
really understands the challenges we face.
I am pleased that we were able to agree a way
forward, and will continue to monitor progress
closely over the coming months to make sure
that we keep up the momentum.

Caister Library..
........combined the old and the new to celebrate
its 50th birthday
The Library celebrated their 50th anniversary
on Thursday 27th November, with a public
tea party and historical display.
Library Staff invited the public to reminisce
about the librarys past over drinks & snacks
at their drop-in tea party.
On show was an array of newspaper cuttings
and photos revealing Caisters past from
the flower power period of the 1960s and
1970s to the modern day.
A projector displayed a series of historical clips
from the East Anglian Film Archive of items
about the village.
The resident knitting group for Caister Library
was also in attendance. Members of the group
have made more than fifty jumpers that have
been sent to Africa for charitable causes but
they were exhibiting some of their other
work that has stayed in the village.
Cllr Pat Hacon, County Councillor for Caister,
attended the event, as well as former members
of staff & guests including Mr Paul Barnard
who worked on the building of the library
before it opened its doors in 1964.
The community of Caister gathered to celebrate
the anniversary, including the villages local
vicar, the PCSO and the historian.
Its free to join the library and free to borrow
books, e-books and magazines.
DVDs, console games and CDs can also be
borrowed at reasonable prices.
For more information about library services,
how to join & events, ask your local library
or visit: www.norfolk.gov.uk/libraries.

Spring Lecture Course

Meet the Pastons: 400 Years of Norfolk

History Revealed Through the Paston
Letters is the title of a 10-week course
on Wednesday mornings, starting on
the 14th January 2015 at 10am.
It will be given by Dr. Robert Knee, chairman
of the Paston Society, at the Cottage, Louden
Road, Cromer.
The Pastons rose to prominence on the death
of Sir John Fastolf (who is partly reflected in
Shakespeares character Falstaff).
Controversy followed as recorded by this vast
and precious collection of letters.
Judge William Paston had secured the manors
of Cromere, Schypden and Ropers with his
wife Agnes, inheriting a life interest on the
death of her husband.
They owned many other manors in Norfolk
and there will be an opportunity to visit
Paston places in Norwich.
At times, Dr. Knee will wear the costumes of
the various Pastons to present his course.
Full details will be published in the
next issue of the Crab Tales.

Crab Tales: 30 West Street, Cromer, Norfolk. NR27 9DS

The LAST issue of the Crab Tales this year comes out on
December 19th and runs to 22nd January 2015 all copy

........calls his son in London the day before

Christmas Eve and says:
I hate to ruin your day, but I have to tell
you that your mother and I are divorcing;
forty-five years of misery is enough.

300km...

Dad, what are you talking about?

the son screams.
We cant stand the sight of each other
any longer, the father says.
Were sick of each other, and Im sick of
talking about this, so you call your sister
in Leeds and tell her.
Frantic, the son calls his sister,
who explodes on the phone.
Like hell theyre getting divorced,
she shouts.
Ill take care of this
She calls Scotland immediately,
and screams at her father,
You are NOT getting divorced.
Dont do a single thing until I get
there. Im calling my brother back,
and well both be there tomorrow.
Until then, dont do a thing,
DO YOU HEAR ME?
and hangs up.
The old man hangs up his phone
and turns to his wife.
Okay love, he says, theyre coming
for Christmas - and theyre paying
their own way.
Thanks to Stuart Milner for this

......... just to create a picture of a bicycle on

Google Maps.
Whereas most people use route mapping apps
to get an idea of how far they travel when
they exercise, a few inventive characters
instead employ their artistic flare and
create masterpieces for the satellites
to document.
David Taylor from Salisbury set the bar
a little higher however when he created
a huge bicycle using Strava while out
on one of his mammoth rides.
The bike, which David had to cycle 301 km
to mark out and stretches all the way from
Southampton to Poole on the south coast,
may well be one of the the biggest pieces
of satellite art ever created.
The modest cyclist told Cycling Weekly:
I actually missed some turns so I had to
redesign as I went. Still, you can see
what its meant to be.
