ABOUT THE PROJECT

Village Bugna is in UC Danna in District Muzaffarabad. It is almost on the top of the
mountains, 30 KM away from the main city of Muzaffarabad, Azad Kashmir. Danish
Muslim Aid and KDF have been working in this area for the last more than 18
months. Initially a skill development centre for females was established by both the
organizations which was implemented by a local organization of Muzaffarabad i.e.
Hamza Development Foundation.

Problem Definition
Earthquake affected this area too, and till now the water supply lines
have not been repaired or installed. Water reservoirs in the
mountains have somehow changed the root or disappeared in the
mountains. From the last 18 months people of Bugna were requesting
for some arrangement to resolve the problem of water availability.
Few organizations worked in this area to resolve this issue but it was
not resolved and the reasons were some where the lack of
commitment and planning. Since there is no water spring in this area,
so females were with no option to collect water from different other
villages. This exercise took 3 hours daily for each family to collect 10
liters water. Due to carrying water daily on the heads, female started
facing baldness. A gradual hair loss from the heads was started. It
was difficult to collect water for ablution, cooking, drinking and
bathing.

Uniqueness of the project

After hearing from the community, matter was taken up to the management of DM
AID. DMAID officials asked KDF to suggest the solution of this problem. Coordinator
KDF Muzaffarabad conducted a survey of the area. After the survey he met with
technical people related to the community and also seeks guidance from one
engineer and a specialist of Muzaffarabad University. Few options were presented,
but in some of them cost was too high or the probability of success was very low. At
last it was decided to do gig a well in mountains; two experts were engaged to
identify the place where there is more probability of any water stream under the
mountains. It was a risky project in terms of success.
Final proposal was sent to DMAID, which was approved after few months after
some discussions and review. KDF team then started the work with proper
engagement of the community.

Digging well in Mountain

In August, work was started to search water in mountains, initially the vendor was
not taking the matter seriously because he was having some unsuccessful stories
about this area. We came to know that there were three previous attempts to have
water by digging in mountains, but all three were unsuccessful.
Since community was very needy and poor; they were praying for the success. For
that matter they sacrifice a goat on the first day of the work and made a collective
Dua to have water.
Contractor and labor continued their work and after the efforts of just 7 to 10 days,
it was water coming out of the well, people from different villages ran towards the
site area to see the reality. All the community members were so happy that they
immediately called KDF coordinator and then inform KDF office in Islamabad.

Work Completion Status

An electric Motor has been installed on the well and a water storage tank has been
constructed slightly on more height. This location of tank will make the water flow
towards community easier. Few taps are there now, from where females and kids

can collect water for their daily usage. People from two other different
organizations visited the site to see this unique project in Bugna.

Inauguration

seen before in any visit to Bugna.
