December 2014 / January 2015

AT THE MEMORIAL HALL

T & F MOVIES

Our autumn programme of films concludes on 12th December

with "Fading Gigolo" (cert 15).
Writer/director John Turturro plays a cash-strapped Brooklyn
florist who goes along with an outlandish plan devised by his
friend Murray (Woody Allen), a struggling bookshop owner, to
become an "escort" to well-to-do ladies and hence save them
both financially. An outrageous plot develops but one which
always remains just on the right side of good taste. Subtle
and funny, with Allen on top form. Also starring Sharon
Stone.
The programme starts at 8 p.m. (doors 7.15) with the usual
bar and raffle - also mulled wine and mince pies. Tickets only
4. We also hope to announce the next programme of films
for the new year.

Issue 66
it will cost 15.00 per person, and we would welcome all
ages from teenagers upwards.
For more details please contact Angela Long on 01460 220953.

PAPERBACK PARADE
The sale of donated paperback books for Hall funds has been
a great success - a total of over 200 raised so far towards
our running costs (currently around 300 per week). If you
have any unwanted books we would be very pleased to have
them to sell. Please leave them in the main Hall or annexe
foyers or ring Nick (220339) who will be very pleased to
collect. Readers will find that we have a very good selection
available. At only 20p each you can`t lose! Come and browse.

HALL MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

We are always on the lookout for new volunteer members to

join the Hall management committee. The duties are not
onerous and it is interesting work which gives an insight into
the running of the small charity responsible for our main
community building. Interested? Why not have an informal
chat with our Secretary Sue (220339).

RESIDENTS GAIN EMERGENCY LIFE SUPPORT

SKILLS
Reports on the Recent Training Course

Angela Long writes:

A Heartstart training course, supported by the British Heart
foundation, was held at Tatworth Memorial Hall in November.
Trainers Richard and Phil were excellent at guiding the group
through an informative, enabling and practical session,
covering such emergency life support skills as CPR combined
with the safe and effective use of the Heartsine pad 500P
Automated External Defibrillator - the same type as is
situated outside the Tatworth Memorial Hall.
The course also covered dealing with choking in adults and
children, as well as how to recognise the differences between
a heart attack and a Cardiac arrest, where prompt action is
necessary.
Eleven people successfully completed the course and gained
their certificates and for those interested in another course

Issue 66 The DRIFT

Judy MacOmish writes:

I attended the above course along with ten other residents
and I have to say it was brilliant. The instructors, Richard and
Phil, were obviously both dedicated and passionate about
teaching people how to save lives. I was so glad I attended,
such a small amount of money and time to give up to now
have the confidence to be able to perhaps save somebody's
life was well worth it. The course was interesting and fun and
I highly recommend it to all. It would be so great if a few
more of the younger members of our community would do the
course - they might be able to move a bit quicker to save
somebody's life than some of us 'oldies'!!

TATWORTH AND FORTON PARISH COUNCIL

Free School Transport for the Children of Tatworth
Somerset County Council recently ruled that some children
who live within 3 miles of Holyrood School didnt qualify for
free school transport whilst others did. In support of the
parents concerned the Parish Council wrote a comprehensive
letter explaining why it would be unreasonable and unsafe for
children to walk to school either along the A358 or Forton
Lane. This letter, together with representations from the
parents was considered and upheld by an Appeals Panel. The
Parish Council is delighted to report that all children from
Tatworth attending Holyrood School will be entitled to free
bus travel.

TATWORTH FLOWER CLUB

AGM and More

President Rosemary Walton welcomed members and friends to

our annual general meeting. Overall we have had a good year
and our chairman Rosalie Palmer thanked the committee for
their support and hard work during the past year, and we now
look forward to 2015.
Our programmes secretary Jean Churchill outlined next year's

programme, which sounds very interesting and entertaining.

The treasurers report from Julie Kettle was followed by the
election of officers; the present committee agreed to remain
en bloc for a further year. After the presentation of trophies,
Peter Partridge presented prizes to the winners of the
photographic competition. Our president offered Peter a
small gift as thanks for his time in judging the photos. The
business then closed and we had a super tea, prepared by Pat
and Karen, who were thanked by Rosemary Walton, saying how
much we had enjoyed every delicious morsel.
At our November meeting our chairman welcomed members
and seven visitors. Nick Heal was our demonstrator and under
the title of Christmas at Home he presented six designs. His
foliage included phormium leaves, eucalyptus, senecio,
spotted laurel and the unusual acanthus. Nick showed us how
he plaited phormium leaves making roses and narrow and wide
plaited leaves. These were very effective and were
incorporated into his designs. His flowers were beautiful and
they included old fashioned roses, large carnations, bird of
paradise, rose hip berries, gold and green chrysants, oriental
lilies, Singapore orchids, lisianthus and many more. Nick also
showed us seasonal decorations he had made from dog wood,
cones and the best was the reindeer (full size) from willow.
All the designs were beautiful and in her vote of thanks Patti
Barnes said what an enjoyable afternoon Nick had given us.

Competition Results:
Inexperienced Class: Pat Sargent 10 points,
Experienced Class: Margaret Harris 9 points, Karen Hallett 8
points.
Judges Choice: Pat Sargent.
Our next meeting is on Thursday 4th December which will be a
workshop. The title of the workshop is Sticky Christmas
when we shall be shown how to make designs using a glue gun.
Doors open at the Tatworth Memorial Hall at 1.30pm for a 2pm
start.
From the club chairman and committee may we wish our
members and friends a Very Happy Christmas and Peaceful
New Year.

TATWORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL

Principal Steve Clarke writes in the school newsletter:

Halloween BBQ & Disco

Thanks to PAFOTS for organising this very well attended family

night which raised 324. There was a raffle, apple bobbing, &
BBQ (meat kindly donated by Sharon & Geoff Symes).
There were prizes for best fancy dress in each year group and
a pumpkin competition which was judged by myself and Mrs
Joslin. Their next event is the Christmas Bazaar on Friday 5th
December3:30 5:00pm.

TATWORTH WIVES GROUP

Hester Down writes:
At our meeting on 2nd October the Rev. Tim Price talked about
the second part of his sabbatical last year when he followed in
his fathers wartime footsteps from Normandy to the Elbe. His
father, Alec Price, was one of seven civilians trained in radar
who became technical instructors for the War Office. He then
went to Normandy following the D Day landings as a technical
adviser in an infantry support role engaged in the location of
enemy mortar sites. Tim followed the route taken by his
father in 1944/45, and visited many places which featured
significantly in the Allied advance including the Normandy
beaches where the D Day landings took place, Caen, The
Bridge at Nijmegen, the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp
and the place near Lauenberg where the Allies crossed the
Elbe and where Alecs journey came to an end. During his
journey Tim was also able to visit some of the famous sites of
major events in the First World War, including Ypres and some
of the memorials and cemeteries.

www.tatworthandforton.co.uk

Our AGM took place on 6th November when we re-appointed

our committee with one addition, Mrs Mary Wardell, and
reviewed our activities over the last year when we raised 150
towards the maintenance of the defibrillator at the Memorial
Hall, and 200 for the publication of one issue of the Church
monthly magazine, the Link.
After the AGM, Rev. Terri Boyland spoke to us about the major
events in her life and how some of them eventually led to her
being called to the Ministry. She trained for the Ministry in
Wales when her husband, Dave, was working in Cardiff, and
she was ordained as a Deacon there by Rowan Williams, then
Bishop of Wales. But after Daves retirement, they moved to
South Chard, and she was then ordained as a priest in the
Church of England in 2005 and worked as a Non-Stipendiary
Minister in the five parishes of our Two Shires Benefice.
Following her retirement, she continues to officiate from time
to time when called upon to assist.
There will be no meeting in December and our next gathering
will be our New Year Cheer / Epiphany Party on Thursday 8th
January 2015 at 7.30 pm in Tatworth Church Rooms when
everyone is welcome. At that event the cheques will be
presented to the beneficiaries of our 2014 fund raising
activities.

The consultation ends on Sunday 28th December. The details

of the proposals and the survey are available online at:
www.somerset.gov.uk/have-your-say/consultations/busservice-changes/
Or a paper copy can be requested by contacting Transporting
Somerset on 0845 345 9155. N.B The last date to have a
survey posted to you is 5 December 2014.
Your comments would be welcome.

FROM THE INBOX

A selection of letters and emails from Residents:
The Jubilee Field

Norman Loveridge writes:

If I were to ask a question regarding the Jubilee Field at a
Parish meeting, I think the Chairman Mr Andrew Turpin would
ask me to put my request in writing, but I feel the residents of
this village need to know the facts.
My question would be:
a) How much has Jubilee Field cost so far;
b) How much is expected to cost in the next three years;
c) What is the Council's eventual aim for this field?
Many thanks for your help.

Forton Bus Service

Andrew Turpin writes:

Transporting Somerset (the Public Transport unit at Somerset
County Council) is consulting on possible reductions in
financial support for local bus routes, which if approved would
take effect from May 2015. The service 99 below runs through
Forton and its reduction could affect our community there. It
also provides a two hourly service to Crewkerne railway
station for all in our community, including Chard residents.
Access to Yeovil Hospital is also important seven days a week.
The service also serves other villages along the route including
Winsham and Clapton.
The proposal:
Withdraw 50% of funding for subsidised Saturday journeys
99

Chard - Yeovil

Support for Mon - Fri journeys will be

maintained. Level of service on the
Saturday will depend on the operators
response.

ST JOHN'S CHURCH NEWS

GREAT WAR 100th ANNIVERSARY
Daphne Carslake writes:
The Exhibition at St Johns Tatworth for the Commemoration
of the Great War included family things loaned by many local
people. The volume of mementos astonished the organisers,
but all were found a place and countless visitors studied the
stories and photos, medals and other objects, displayed
before them. The organisers of the event are indebted to you
all and thank you very much.
The Flower Arrangements followed the war theme by
illustrating songs and poems for the time. The standard was
extremely high; there are some wonderfully talented people
here.
In the early part of the year, John Cotton had an idea why
not have a concert in church to mark the 100th anniversary of
WW1? A small team started planning, researching, fetching,
and carrying, and rehearsing. It all came together in a
marvellous event on Saturday 8th November; those who were
there will not forget it. Membury Choir joined St Johns and
various people read poems and letters, from that time, and
brought the wartime experiences to life. The concert raised in
the region of 1300 for the Royal British Legion and 800 for St
Johns Church funds.
Very many thanks to all those who contributed their family
treasures, all those who helped with the stewarding and
refreshments, all who arranged flowers, all who took any part

in the concert, but especially those who supported us by

coming through the church door and giving so generously.

Finally, Christmas is coming!

This means TCYC (Tatworth Church Youth Club) and parents

and friends, will be 'Caroling around Tatworth' on Friday 19th
December and they want YOU to join them! They will start
from St John's Church at 7PM. If you can't walk and sing, then
listen out for them when they come your way and come
outside to support them.

Extract from 'Happy the Man'' by John Dryden, translating
Horace (65 - 8 BC)
Our second evening meeting of the Autumn season,
on Thursday 13th October 2014, took the form of an 'in house'
presentation of 'Science in the Garden' delivered by Tony
Arnold AI Hort. The evening was well attended and a difficult
subject was delivered, in general, in layman's terms.
The last session of 2014 will take place on Thursday
11th December at 19.30 in Tatworth Memorial Hall. This will
be the Annual General Meeting of the Society - open to all
comers. The format of the evening will be: The Annual
General Meeting (not too lengthy!) followed by a light hearted
general quiz and concluding with a 'Bring and Share' supper.
Future dates for the diary are:
Jan 17th: Annual Society luncheon at 'The Golden Fleece' Perry
Street.
Feb 12th: 'Seed sowing, pricking out and potting on' by a
speaker from 'The Gold Club' - 19:30 TMH.
All that remains for me to add now is to say may all enjoy a
peaceful Christmas season and a prosperous (we hope) 2015.

TATWORTH GOOD COMPANIONS

Anne Goody writes:
30th October was a Halloween Mystery Trip with many dressing
up for the occasion. The trip started off with coffee at
Wellington, followed by lunch on the outskirts of Taunton and

afternoon tea at Glastonbury. A really good trip with all

enjoying themselves with fabulous weather and some enjoying
ice creams outside at 4 pm.
October was our AGM followed by soup and a pud. Again we
had over 40 members present. Bob Goody was unanimously
voted on again as Chairman with the rest of the Committee
being voted in en-bloc as they had all worked so well together.
The Chair gave a vote of thanks to Gladys Prince (President),
and all the Committee for working so well together.
Our Christmas Dinner is at Minehead on 11th December and
Christmas Bingo is 4th December but we are also organising a
group trip to Cricket St Thomas for a Christmas Dinner and

TATWORTH WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

Report from meeting held on 16th October 2014:
Angela welcomed some new members and visitors, and
Jerusalem was sung.
Jane's afternoon tea and video showing raised 25 towards the
Kurling equipment. Five shoe boxes had been filled for young
women/students and these were on show in the hall. Apart
from goods, the sum of 28 had been donated to enable us to
purchase items for the boxes.
Wendy Cotton confirmed that the 2 readings and the carol had
been chosen for Ilminster, the readings to be given by Judy
Gould.
Mr. Robinson from the RNLI wrote to thank us for the 60
donation made up of his fee of 30 and a collection
afterwards from members of another 30. There is a new
Denman brochure for anyone to look at and Marguerita
reminded us that a bursary is available for half the cost of any
course. A coach will run for the trip to Wells in December,
picking up at the Poppe Inn and in Chard. Details of a quilting
exhibition in Bristol had been received.
Angela showed a quilt donated by Aloo for which a draw will
be held to raise money for Kurling.Five people are going to the
Annual Meeting at Westlands.
We are looking for a new venue for Tai Chi as the current room
is rather small and cold in the winter.
What did Tatworth WI do during WW2? We know they knitted
gloves, socks and hats for the troops, made lots of jam and

collected halfpennies. They raised money to buy a Brenn Gun

for the village! There were 82 members in Tatworth at the
time. They produced comfort boxes for the boys of the
village, held a lot of dances, made blackout curtains for the
school (where they met at that time), and made lots of pies
but no baker in Tatworth would bake them.
Wendy Hall then gave a talk on A Walk around Florence in the
Renaissance which was beautifully illustrated by slides. She
showed many of the lovely buildings and also the art of the
time produced by famous artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and
Botticelli. Nan gave a vote of thanks.

the Memorial Hall Committee, has come up with the idea of

attempting a wild flower meadow. The black material is to
help kill off the grass before wild flower seeds can be sown.
This same resident suggested planting bulbs in the grass
around the hall car park. To this end, my neighbour, Clem
Humphreys very kindly donated 200 daffodil bulbs!
Unfortunately it turns out that there is very little soil under
most of the grass in which to plant! However, we found a
good depth of soil in the bank on the left hand side of the car
park just in front of the pre-school building. We therefore set
to and have planted all the bulbs in this bank and now have
our fingers crossed for a good display in the spring. Thank you
Clem.
We dont know how the wild flower bit will go but I think it
was a great idea to give it a try. Even if it is only partially
successful I am sure it will be of some benefit to our wildlife.
Maybe the Parish Council might think about doing something
similar around the allotment area in the Jubilee Field to bring
in a few pollinating insects?!

CSW in Tatworth is just about to enter its EIGHTH year, having
been set up on 6th November 2007. During this period, overall
speeding has been reduced from 28.8% to its current level of
just 4.7%. The average for the South Somerset Group is 5%, so
we have just scraped in below that last year.

It is getting increasingly more difficult to reduce this

percentage year-on-year, but constant vigilance at four of our
main sites in the village will, I am convinced, see a further
impact during 2014-15. New members are always being sought

You will see in this issue's From The Inbox, that Somerset
County Council may reduce its subsidy for a number of bus
services which might affect Saturday services, possibly including
the 99.
Perhaps we can do what we can to preserve services by
encouraging everyone to take part in the consultation to make
local voices heard. However, we should remember that the
proposed reduction in subsidies that help transport companies to
run these services, did not have to happen.
