EDITORS NOTE

Male Cheerleaders Rule!

In this issue of Atlanta Cheer Magazine, we celebrate all types and levels of male cheerleaders.
Our cover story is all about some of the talented cheer guys we have here in the Atlanta area.
We had a great time getting to know each of them and it is an honor to highlight them in our
July/August issue. These talented boys add so much to their teams and to the cheerleading
industry as a whole.

Introducing Atlanta Cheers Ari

I also wanted to take the time to introduce my seven-year-old son, Ari, who just began
cheerleading again after a two-year break to focus on power tumbling. This past spring Ari
became the USAG Georgia State TNT Champion for his age/level in all three events
double mini, trampoline and rod floor tumbling. He is a member of Flip City Souths
competitive power tumbling team and trains out of Trinity Athletics, where he is also
on Trinitys Junior 2 allstar cheerleading team, Juicy Couture. Make sure to say Hi!
to Ari, if you see him at cheer competitions with us. He loves meeting new cheer people!

#pRAY4Chris

Many of you may be familiar with the story of Coach Chris Gage, who was in a near fatal car
crash in May. Like you, weve followed his progress and have sent many thoughts and prayers
of support to him and his family each night at 8 pm. Chris miraculous story and the incredible
support shown to him by the cheerleading world have both touched and inspired us. His story
is featured in our Support Squad section. I recommend that everyone read it. It is a great
example of how in hope and faith, all things are possible.

Q&A

Your Cheerleading
Questions Answered

Question: Im going to be a high school senior this year. I want to be on a

college team next fall. What are some things I can be doing now to help me
make the team of my choice?
College Bound Cheerleader
Answer: There are a number of things you can do to help improve your
chances of making a college team. First of all, contact the head coach of the
college cheer program you are interested in to introduce yourself and ask
specifically what they look for in ideal candidates for their cheer team. It is
important that you contact the coach yourself, rather than having a parent do
this for you. They are looking to have you on their team, not your mom or dad.
You will also want to ask when they hold clinics or other events and then plan to
be there. This will get you in front of the coaches prior to tryouts and may help
your chances, as you try to earn a spot on the team.
Once you know specifically what your desired team looks for in a cheerleader,
train to that list of skills. For example, if you are planning to go to a co-ed team,
you may want to schedule some co-ed flying lessons. Or if youve always been
a flyer, but are trying out for an all-girl college team, you may want to learn
some basing technique to make yourself more versatile.
In tumbling some college teams will be looking for fulls and standing tucks,
where as other teams may be looking for layouts and the potential to develop
higher level skills. It will all depend on each individual program. This is why
communication now with college coaches will be critical to maximizing tryout
success in the spring.
Lastly, dont forget about your grades. Your school work will be just as
important when it comes to making a college team. If you cant get accepted
into the college or university, you cant be on the team no matter how good your
cheerleading skills are So study as hard as you train.

We just may pick your question to be answered in a future issue.

Cupie

A co-ed stunt in which both of the flyers feet

are in one hand of the base and is performed at full
extension. Although traditionally performed as a co-ed
stunt, cupies can also be performed by an all-girl squad.
A cupie can also be referred to as an awesome, if the
base extends their free arm into the high v position,
rather than leaving it at the hip.
A cupie or awesome is an elite level stunt allowed in
levels 3, 4, 5 and 6 of allstar cheerleading and is a staple
in college cheerleading. Depending on entry, a cupie
can be legally performed at level 2 Both of the flyers
feet must be placed into the bases one hand prior to
extension. Beginning at level 4, the flyer may pull a
one-leg position.

ATLANTA: WHERE THE BOYS CHEER

Its no secret that the Atlanta area is rich

in cheerleading talent. All-girl teams, like
Stingrays Orange, are world famous for
being 7-time World Champions.
But what people may not know is that
Atlanta is home to a good number of very
talented male cheerleaders of all ages and
levels. They cheer for allstar teams, their
school teams and with college teams and
are a vital part to what makes cheerleading
in Atlanta so great.
With more and more allstar gyms and high
school teams going co-ed, Atlanta really is
where the boys cheer.

PRO CHEER

It is for this reason that Atlanta Cheer

Magazine interviewed 20 boys and
asked them about themselves and their
experiences as cheerleaders. In addition
to being cheerleaders, these guys are also
strong individuals with accomplishments
and goals that go beyond the competition
mat and game sidelines.

MATT HIXSON

TEAM: Georgia Allstars Legendary SLC 5

A four-year cheer standout, 16-year-old Matt will be with Georgia Allstars on their Senior Co-ed 5 Worlds team this
season. After having cheered two years at Apalachee High School, where he helped bring back the co-ed team after
many years of having only an all-girl team, he will also cheer with the co-ed team at Winder Barrow High School this
year. Matt credits cheer with helping him meet new people and make new connections and tries hard to fit in friends
and fun, even though cheer takes up much of his time. Matt wants to follow his brother Drews footsteps and cheer in
college and enjoys playing basketball whenever he can.

Winning competitions is hard! Winning CheerSport last season has been my

proudest moment so far.

DREW HIXSON

TEAM: University of Georgia Sideline Cheer

A proud new member of the Georgia Bulldogs sideline, this 18-year-old says his biggest challenge has been catching
on to tumbling and stunting in just two years. He got the tumbling bug from watching his brother, who tumbled and
got into cheerleading soon after. An academic All Star, this UCA All American puts grades first, but places as cheer a
close second. When not cheering on UGA, Drew enjoys golf, hanging out with friends and still savoring a Top 5 finish
with Apalachee High School at GHSA State last season. Before college, Drew cheered with the Georgia Allstars for
two years with his brother Matt.

I wanted to come in and do well from the moment I walked in the door, but realized
it was going to take a lot of hard work to get the skills I wanted.

16

NATHAN MCKOY

TEAM: ACE of Atlanta Dreamcatchers

Even though hes only in his 2nd season, at 7 years old Nathan is already a huge standout at ACE on the Special Needs
team. He does not let his mitochondrial disease and autism get in the way of his two great loves tumbling and
flying. Cheerleading has helped him make friends and stay active despite all of his medical challenges. When he has to
be in the hospital, he requests all of his medals from competitions to show to the nurses. He started cheering in 2012
after watching his sister at competitions.

Being at competitions and practices and out of the hospital is a huge honor
and accomplishment.

ARI CIFUENTES

TEAM: Trinity Athletics Juicy Couture Junior 2

Having started his cheer career as the mascot for his sisters cheer team at 3 years old, this 7-year-old Georgia State
Power Tumbling Champion has finally found a new cheer home with Trinity Athletics. When not practicing in the
gym for cheer or power tumbling, this former Sun Prairie H.S. Cardinal Classic Grand Champion enjoys collecting
Pokmon cards and playing video games with his friends and sister. While winning at the Cheerleading Worlds one day
is high on his priority list, Ari hopes to win the Power Tumbling World Championship, as well, and maybe one
day compete in the Olympics.

Ive always liked competitions, its fun. Its lots of pressure, but also a lot of fun.

DEVON STURGIS

TEAM: Future Extreme and Archer High School

This busy 17-year-old is starting his 3rd cheer season and is completely obsessed with his Future Extreme team. He
says he is proud of himself and his teammates for making it to where they are now. Devon says he also likes coaching
others and teaching himself how to tumble and show his passion for his talent. His bigger dreams are to cheer for a
Division 1 college and become a veterinarian. Devon will be graduating from high school this year with honors. In
addition, Devon enjoys doing any type of performance in front of people dance, theater, singing and is currently
writing a book.

Dont just stick to what youre good at. Try something new and you may fall in
love with it.

JACK MATLACK

TEAM: Georgia Allstars Legendary SLC 5

Going into his 7th season makes this 13-year-old a true veteran of allstar cheer. While he enjoys tumbling he feels that
the combination of tumbling and stunting is what makes cheer a true sport. Being bullied for being a male cheerleader
may be tough for some kids, but that wont stop him from reaching his goal of cheering in college for Kentucky or
Alabama. Although Jack has won CheerSport a couple of times, hes most proud of competing with Icon Sky this past
season at The Cheerleading Worlds. This season he looks forward to taking the mat again at Worlds with
Georgia Allstars.

Yeah, Ive been teased before, but Im not going to stop cheering because of it

Atlanta Cheer Magazine | www.AtlantaCheer.com

19

ARI MIKELS

TEAM: CheerSparx
At 9 years old Ari is ready to karate-chop the competition. No seriously, this karate champ is going into his 3rd
allstar season with Cheersparx and is a former gymnast, as well. After scoring in the Top 3 in his first competition ever,
Ari uses cheer to get stronger for football and karate and also loves the best friend he has made through cheer. When
hes not flipping and stunting, Ari is devoted to making video games and playing with friends.

I love cheerleading because all my friends are there.

MICAH CROCKER

TEAM: Devilray Allstars

A recent transplant from Tomball, TX, this 13-year-old Devilray started cheering at 6 years old because, as he told his
mom while watching his sister cheer, If I was cheering those girls wouldnt fall. A love of tumbling, stunting and
working hard with his team to reach perfection is what drives him to stand strong and not worry about what others
think or say about him. When not practicing for cheer he enjoys riding his bike, playing football, baseball and hip-hop
dancing and hopes to one day become a youth pastor and a cheer coach.

I think its important for boys in cheerleading to be strong, male role models.

Atlanta Cheer Magazine | www.AtlantaCheer.com

20

ETHAN RUTLEDGE

TEAM: Future Extreme

This high school football star has proudly helped change the stereotype and perception of cheerleaders at his school. In
fact this 5-year veteran of Future Extreme just got his full. He is very active academically and has serious plans to be
a dentist or even go pre-med in college (while cheering, of course). After watching his sister cheer for a few years he
decided to get in on the act and loves tumbling more than anything.

My biggest challenge has been flexibility and having people get used to the idea
of me being a cheerleader, as well as a football player.

ZACH MITCHELL

TEAM: A-TOWNE ALLSTARS SMC 5

This 17-year-old Virginia Tech Cheerleading hopeful got into cheer to fight of the boredom of watching his sisters
practices. Three years later, hes not only worked hard to get all his level 5 skills, but credits cheerleading with helping
him get in better shape and increase his agility to become a better football and basketball player. Although he wants to
become a computer programmer in the future, he also plans to keep cheer in his life by coaching or teaching tumbling
in his spare time.

Cheerleading is harder than football.

Atlanta Cheer Magazine | www.AtlantaCheer.com

22

DEVIN MCCLENDON

TEAM: Trinity Athletics Senior Co-ed 5

While being new to the world of cheerleading, at 16 years old this Tae Kwon Doe black belt is no stranger to hard
work. Having started his first business of reselling silly bands at age 12 and creating his own line of DK - Kendamas
at age 15, he challenged himself to get all the skills needed to make a level 5 Worlds team in 6 months and succeeded.
While his proudest cheer moment thus far was landing his full, hell have many more in the future as he hopes to make
the UGA competitive cheer team in a few years.

I like the team aspect of cheerleading and I think its helped make me a
better person.

ANDREW SHERLING

TEAM: Pro Cheer Senior Co-ed 5

An attempt at a first back handspring during a birthday party held at a cheer gym got 17-year-old Andrew hooked
on cheer just 3 years ago. Since then he has won a GHSA State Championship with the incredible Ola High School
and also took the floor with the famed ACE of Atlanta Thunderbirds. Now at Pro Cheer, Andrew has his sights set
on college and becoming an even stronger stunter and growing his cheer family. This former football and baseball
player looks to fishing and good friends for relaxation.

I feel like cheerleading will help in life by teaching lessons in working with
people because youre all working towards a common goal as a team.

Atlanta Cheer Magazine | www.AtlantaCheer.com

23

ERIC MONROE

TEAM: Stingrays Steel SLC 5

This 18-year-old University of West Georgia hopeful is already counting the days until he can apply and possibly
get a scholarship to keep cheering after 7 seasons on the allstar floor. After taking the Worlds floor in 2012 and also
appearing on our pages as a featured contributor for the past year, Eric is counting the many friends and networking
relationships he has developed as a huge bonus. We think hes off to a great start as a founding athlete of our No Bully
Zone campaign, with many fans who see him as a cheer role model.

It helps to have friends who are also male cheerleaders, who understand
that sometimes the biggest challenge is that people/coaches expect more
from male cheerleaders.

CAMERON SMITH-ROSEMOND

TEAM: Young Harris College Competition and Sideline Cheer

This future sports broadcaster says cheer is responsible for his increased communication and leadership skills in fact
its helped him realize his strengths and weaknesses and work hard in everything he does. Going into his 3rd year of
cheerleading, he says a friend turned him on to tumbling. He cheered allstar with Future Extreme and even received the
Best Male Performer award at Athletic Champions Encore competition this past season. His funny personality and
big smile isnt the only thing people love about him. This 17-year-old is part of Ushers New Look Foundation, which
helps in the community, builds houses for Habitat For Humanity, runs food drives and raises awareness for diseases
on college campuses. In his spare time he plays basketball and sings.

Cheer has taught me that if you work hard, you can accomplish everything
you want to.

Atlanta Cheer Magazine | www.AtlantaCheer.com

25

CHRISTIAN HUNT

TEAM: A-TOWNE ALLSTARS

This 10-year-old future Apple executive credits his sister for getting him into cheerleading. While he enjoys doing
something different and being a part of a team and cheering with his sister, Christian admits that all the attention he
gets from his coaches and teammates is what makes all the hard work worth it. Walking into the gym for his first
practice was a great feeling, but competing at Battle Under the Big Top and winning against some of the best teams in
the area was his proudest moment thus far.

I love cheerleading because it keeps me active everyday.

NASHAWN JONES

TEAM: Trinity Athletics Senior Co-ed 5

After two partial seasons due to injury, this 18-year-old varsity football, basketball and track star of Forest Park High
School hopes to complete his first full allstar season this year. Having proudly placed 12th at the Cheerleading Worlds
this past season with Trinity, he hopes all his hard work will pay off this year with a Worlds win.

Ill be going into the Marines after this season and cheer has helped me be
physically prepared to go.

Atlanta Cheer Magazine | www.AtlantaCheer.com

26

BLAKE MCMURRY

TEAM: ACE of Atlanta Thunderbirds SSC 5

Flipping is nothing new for this 16-year-old, in fact Blake was a gymnast for 8 years. Some of the girls from his school
knew he could tumble and asked him to come check out the cheer team. Besides the advantages of being around the
cute girls, this part-time, self-described outdoorsman learned quickly that cheer was much harder than it looked.
He said he worked really hard getting his skills and credits cheer with making him a more agile football player. Even
though he is looking ahead to cheering in college, Blake charts his proudest moment so far as earning a Full Paid Bid
with ACE of Atlanta Thunderbirds this past season at NCA Dallas.

It was an amazing feeling to hear our name called for the Full Paid bid to Worlds
at NCA Nationals in Dallas.

TANNER MARTIN

TEAM: Stingrays Slate SSC 5

If its possible to be a cheer veteran at only 13 years old, it would be Tanner. A proud member of last seasons
Stingrays Green Gang, this athlete still celebrates the Summit Full Paid bid and the championship win. Going into
his 5th year of allstar cheerleading, Tanner is now on the new Small Co-ed 5 Stingrays Slate and is already looking
ahead to join another winning program at University of Kentucky in a few years. He sees cheer as a true positive force
in his life, despite lots of aches and pains and getting picked on at school for being a cheerleader sometimes.

I love tumbling and cheer has taught me to overcome all obstacles, work hard in
everything and in life and pay attention in school!

Atlanta Cheer Magazine | www.AtlantaCheer.com

27

NOAH TYJI RILEY

TEAM: Trinity Athletics Fendi Junior 4

As a current member of the National Olympic Development Program, 5th region representative in the National Junior
Olympics, this 10 year old enters his second cheer season as the current CheerSport So You Think You Can Tumble
under 14 male champion. Having won Grand Champions at CheerSport one-day the first time his team hit the floor
this past season, he knows that the sportsmanship and team building that cheerleading teaches will help him with all of
his future goals.

I thought it was cool and I wanted to try something new, so I went for it.

MITCHELL SMITH

TEAM: University of Georgia Sideline Cheer and Small Dawgs Competition Team
As a recent staff member of Camp Woodward, Owner of Cheer Studios, GHSA All American, NCA All American
and proud member of the 2010 GHSA 5A Coed State Champion Peachtree Ridge Blue Pride, this 21-year-old cheer
veteran credits this past season as a UGA Small Dawg as the best time in his cheerleading career. Getting into great
shape, learning to do cool things and giving 110% to what you love are just a few things he credits cheer for in his life.
Having been on the swim team, played soccer and cheered all the same time in high school, the diversity of the sport is
what has made him stick with cheerleading for so long.

People may ridicule and judge you for being a male cheerleader, but those that get
to know you will know the real you and theyre the ones that matter.

ATLANTA CHEERS ALLSTAR AWARDS

YOU DECIDE THE WINNERS!

Over the 2012-2013 allstar competition season, we saw some
amazing cheerleading talent from the Atlanta area. It is for this
reason that we wanted to honor those teams that really stood
out to us by nominating them in the first ever Atlanta Cheer
Magazine Allstar Awards. You the reader will get to decide who
wins by placing your votes for your favorites in each category.

CHEER SOUTH

Before we get to the nominees, wed like to say one final thing.
If your team was not nominated in a certain category and you
feel that it should have been, dont worry. Its not because we
overlooked you on purpose.
With nearly 100 allstar gyms in the state of Georgia, it is
difficult to see everyone perform at competition. If we didnt
include you, it may just mean we did not get the opportunity to
see you through the past season. Because of this and to make
sure everyone has a fair shot of winning an award, our Readers
Choice award allows you to enter in your favorite gym. The
gym with the most votes will win.
Voting begins now and will end on Saturday, September 7th,
2013 at 11:59 pm.

CHEER TIPS
With Spicy and Friends

Spicy@AtlantaCheer.com | Follow Me: @SpicyCifuentes

I hope everyone is having a cheertastic summer so far. Ive

been in the gym working hard, but Ive also made time to
have fun with my friends.
In June, I was able to attend Pop Explosion, a teen music festival
that came to Atlanta. I got to see so many wonderful new musical
artists. My friend Riley and I even got to meet and interview a
rising star, Matt Hunter. We asked him to give us his top tips for
getting ready for a performance and how he keeps from being
nervous when he performs on stage. All cheerleaders could use
those tips at times, right?

Watch Our Interview With Matt Hunter Now >

We also asked Matt his advice for any kids who may be experiencing

talk to us, Matt! Weve been listening to your song Mi Amor
non-stop since the concert.
Also, my friends Riley, Ryan and I got to ask some male

STINGRAYS COACH CHRIS GAGE RECEIVES WORLDWIDE

SUPPORT FROM THE CHEER COMMUNITY & BEGINS MIRACULOUS
RECOVERY AFTER A NEAR FATAL CAR ACCIDENT
Just after 2 pm on May 13th, the
unthinkable happened. A car speeding
down the road at 72 mph ran a red
light and hit the car Coach Chris
Gage was driving as he was on his
way to work at The Stingrays Allstars
in Marietta.
Chris was rushed to Kennestone
Hospital, but the outlook for his
condition was bleak. The doctors
and nurses prepared his family for
the worst and told them they did not
expect Chris to live because of the
amount of damage to his brain. Chris
was almost completely brain-dead
and was in a coma.
The person I loved most in the
world had been stripped away from
me in a moment, said Michael Ivey,
Chris partner of three and a half years.
That night, people started coming
to check on Chris and to support

his family and I, and it was very

overwhelming, continued Michael.
Someone did a head count and
there was over 100 people there,
taking up three waiting rooms in the
hospital and still overflowing into the
hallways. A large portion of that was
every single faculty member of The
Stingray Allstars.

The support for Chris did not stop

there. The coach needed a miracle
to survive. The Atlanta area cheer
community responded quickly
to show their support through
social media with the hashtag
#pRAY4Chris. Against all odds,
Chris survived that first night in the
hospital and then the next and the
next. His doctors were astounded at
how this could be possible.

worlds cheer community was all

sending thoughts and prayers to Chris
and hoping for recovery. It was then
that Chris mom Debbie started the
Prayers For Chris Gage Facebook
page to update everyone on his
day-to-day progress. Currently the
page has close to 3,300 likes and that
number appears to grow daily.
In addition, The Stingray Allstars
began updating their website every
night at 8 pm with any news of
Chris condition. Soon 8 pm each
night became the time for Stingrays
athletes and supporters all over the
world to pause for a moment to send
thoughts and prayers to Chris and
his family.
Soon banners, letters and cards
started pouring in for Chris. The
hashtag #pRAY4Chris was even
trending on Twitter. All the while,
Chris made slow, but steady progress
that continued to amaze his doctors.
Then Chris miraculously woke up
from his coma.
I was in the waiting room with some
friends and family waiting their turn

to see him, and his mom was there

beside him listening to the song I Melt
by Rascal Flatts, remembered Michael.
His mom was talking to him about
how he used to sing that song to her
and she said, Come on Chris, sing
this song. I would give anything for
you to open your eyes and to hear
your voice. And much to everyones
surprise, he opened his eyes! For
just a moment that day she was
able to look into his eyes. The
moment didnt last long, but it
was just the beginning.
Chris progress did not stop there.
Each day he opened his eyes more
and more. Soon he was able to
squeeze a hand on request and
was responding to other simple

commands. Even with the progress

he was making, some of Kennestone
staff was not optimistic that Chris
would ever lead a quality life again.
But his family knew better and had
faith that he would continue to heal.

Not even sure that Chris was

comprehending everything going on,
I sat down beside his bed to tell him
everything... Everything about his
accident, why he was in the hospital and
what they had told us, said Michael.

By the time Chris was ready to be

moved to the Long Term Acute
Care (LTAC) facility at Windy
Hill Hospital in Marietta, he had
succeeded in proving all of his
doctors wrong. Every nurse and
doctor that came by to see Chris
called him The Miracle Patient.

I knew in my heart that Chris was

still there, fighting to get back to us.
I told him that I needed him to get it
together because I couldnt do this
on my own... that I needed him by my
side to keep doing all the things we
wanted to in life. I told him that it was
crunch time... that he had to start really
pushing and start showing the doctors
and therapists that he could beat this
and that he deserved the chance.

Chris spent about a month at the

LTAC facility, where he was able to
get some limited time with physical
and speech therapists. He began to
become more alert and was staying
awake for longer periods of time.
However, the staff there concluded
that there was nothing more they
could do for Chris and advised the
family to think about placing him
in a nursing home or care for him at
home. The family was stunned.
The next night, Michael decided to
have a heart-to-heart with Chris.

Well, from that point on there was

a new fire in his eyes that I hadnt
seen since the accident. He started
showing off! Within about 2 weeks
time he started showing what he was
made of! He stood up on his own legs
for the first time. He showed us that
he could still read and do math. He
started trying to talk again. He was
doing so much and fighting so hard to
prove that he could do it!

Soon the family was able to have a

representative from the Shepherd
Center in Atlanta evaluate Chris. He
was able to stand, take a few steps
and even sit up on his own. It was
determined that Chris was a good
match for the facility and he was
moved there just recently.
Since being moved to the Shepherd
Center, Chris has continued to make
dramatic progress. He has been
speaking in a strong whisper and
has started drinking and eating solid
foods. He has even been able to walk
an entire lap around the facilitys
second floor.
Also, Chris can recognize everyone
and tells them he loves them. Just
days ago his tracheotomy tube was
removed, which is a huge step in
the right direction. With his familys
support and the support of the
cheerleading community, Coach
Chris Gage has defied all odds
and continues to heal.
We are so thankful for every person
that has been there for us and for
Chris. Whether it was offering to do

our laundry, to bring us dinner, to

give us a shoulder to cry on or just
saying a simple prayer at 8 oclock
every night, beamed Michael.
The outpouring of love and support
from the cheer world has been so
amazing, and there has not been a
day that has gone by that someone
from the Stingrays has not either
stopped in to see Chris or at least
called to check on him. We are so
thankful that Chris is part of such an
amazing community of people, and
so thankful for the Stingray family
opening up and welcoming us in with
open arms and hearts. They have all
become a part of our own family as
well and will always have a special
place in our hearts.
We are very close to the day that
Chris will be able to walk back into
that gym where he loves to be and
where so many people love him. And
he will be able to share an amazing
testimony of Gods grace and love
with every person he meets from this
day forward.

On Wednesday, July 10th, Patricia

Evans of Kennesaw turned herself
into authorities after a warrant was
issued for her arrest. Evans is accused
of causing the accident that injured
Chris. Evans has been charged with
serious injury with a vehicle, reckless
driving, speeding and violation of a
traffic control device.

N BEGINS
MY SENIOR YEAR SEASON O
THE LEVEL WITH ERIC MONROE
Gearing up for My Senior Year as a Member of
Stingrays Steel, Senior Large Co-ed Worlds Team

By now team placements have been

announced for most all high school and
allstar teams for the 2013-2014 season
of cheerleading around the country.
Practice has begun and my senior year
of cheering has finally became real to me.
Every game on Friday night will have
meaning. Every performance on stage
will have that countdown kind of
feel to it... Hopefully with a Worlds
placement and a ring to show for it
with my Stingrays Steel team this time.
Im super excited for yall to see us
perform this season. Ive never cheered
alongside this many boys before. Being
a part of all the teams Ive been on over
the past 5 years has been the best time
of my teenaged years by far. Im not
going to want this season to end. This
season will be my best, I just know it.

Being a male cheerleader has made

the opportunities Ive been involved
in even sweeter. The No Bully Zone
campaign with Atlanta Cheer has by
far been the most rewarding.
If I could tell every male cheerleader
who is cheering today or the upcoming
boys who are thinking of becoming a
cheerleader anything it would be this....
There is something in the way a boy is
looked at in the world of cheerleading.
Boys are the strength, the focal point,
the ones people love to watch perform.
Always be true to who you are and
what it is you want to do. Cheerleading
has a way of welcoming boys into their
world more than any other sport Ive
seen. The bonding amongst the other
boys on my team at school and my
allstar team has been closer than what
girls call BFFs. LOL!

OnTheLevel@AtlantaCheer.com

Being a boy cheerleader is hard.

Being a GREAT boy cheerleader is
even harder, but the dedication and
the rewards are a very personal self
satisfaction. You are an elite group
of cheerleaders that only a handful
of people get to claim they belong to.
Boys dont have to wonder if all eyes
are on them, they know they are being
watched. Everybody wants to see
the boys perform at competitions.
My plans after I finish high school
will include cheering, whether I attend
college or continue as an instructor, I
wont stop cheering. I still have a few
more years left in me and plus.... The
boys need me!
See you guys (and girls) on the mat
soon... Cheer on!

Helping Kids Become Champions

Both On and Off the Competition Floor
by Coach Frank Riley, Co-owner and Head Coach of Flip City South

Flip City South was started eight years

ago by me and my wife Latifa Riley with
the sole purpose to keep kids off the
street. We wanted to give them something
to do as an outlet to deter them from
potentially jeopardizing their lives.
Our goal is simple to teach children
the fundamentals of life, as well as train
them to be great athletes.
One of the many problems that we have
seen in life, from our childhood through
to present day, is that there are so many
talented kids out there who miss their
chance on life because their families cant
afford to put them into activities, such
as tumbling.
Our program was ultimately built to
provide children the opportunity to
participate at very minimal cost.

Prayerfully, we have been blessed with

the opportunity to provide our program at
no cost to underprivileged individuals.
Both my wife and I have experienced
what its like to not have a lot, but want
to be apart of something special. Because
of this, it is so much easier for us to feel
the passion of children in our program
and that passion carries over in our
work as coaches.
We focus on building each athlete up,
rather than tearing them down to give
them determination and self-confidence.
Fueled by the determination to succeed,
our athletes work hard for the team and it
shows when we are at competitions.
While working with the kids, we have
won numerous state, regional and
national championships. We currently

have two kids on the USAG National

TNT team. Also, two of our athletes
made the USAGs Olympic Development
Program and two kids have received
college scholarships.
As coaches, Latifa and I have never
been in the sport for financial gain.
Our satisfaction comes from the many
lives that we have changed from
simple life experiences to educational
accomplishments of the kids we train.
We not only focus on training champion
tumblers, we also focus on helping kids
become champions at life.
Nothing means more to us than helping
someone achieve their goals in life. If we
can Change the Lives of Tomorrows
Leaders, We Will Forever Be Building
Dreams in The Air.
