# November 4, 2014 / $ Kristine Deveza

FAIRFAX, Va. The lines moved quickly at the Fairfax County Government Center on Oct. 30.

trac of voters was steady.
Phu Hoang, 32, an independent, said, I dont usually aliate with a particular party, but this year I
voted Democrat.
Robert DiCalogero, 69, said, I tend to discount heavily all of the ads because its entertainment; its

FAIRFAX, Va. On the last day to cast your ballot before Tuesdays election, a steady stream of voters
moved through the Dolley Madison branch of the Fairfax County library in 48-degree weather.
Felicia Schwenk, 60, is the Democratic precinct captain for the polling station, which facilitates voters
from the 8th, 10th and 11th districts. Though its outside of her own district, shes most excited about
the tight race between Republican Barbara Comstock and Democrat John Foust to represent
Virginias 10th District in Congress.
Arnold Goldsmith, 72, is a retired intelligence ocer
for the Air Force and high school teacher of 25
years. He started volunteering on political
campaigns at age 10, while growing up in Detroit,
but has lived in the area for 46 years.
Im what you call a yellow dog Democrat, he said.
The term refers to voters who would choose
anyone or anything, even a yellow dog as long
as they were on the Democratic ticket.

He says the term blue dog Democrat exists to

describe moderate Democrats but that, now, if you
compromise, you get destroyed in the primaries.
You get tea-partied, he said.
Goldsmith supports John Foust to represent the
district.

He points out that Comstock is endorsed by the National Rie Association and believes shes on the
wrong side of that issue.
He also said that while shes unlikely to talk about it, Comstock does not support abortion rights.
Jill Cook, 55, says shes been volunteering for Republicans since she was in college. Now shes the
Drainesville magisterial district chair and oversees 29 precinct captains.
Citing telework tax credits, human tracking and Lyme disease, Cook says Comstock is the most
qualied person for the job because she works on issues that matter to Northern Virginians.
While hugging herself and walking in place to ght the days cold, Mary Lou Christy, 59, gave her
reason for volunteering as a precinct captain.
Im tired of the Democrats, she said. Im tired of Barack Obama.
Richard Schmitt is the supervisor of McLeans in-person absentee voting center. He says turnout has
been pretty much the same as the last election, with 1,543 District 10 residents and 2,922 residents
overall having voted at that polling place since early voting began there in September.
