There are many ice hotels in Canada, Alaska and Scandinavia. The hotels are
beautiful but very cold. Visitors have to bring warm clothes, including snow
jackets, hats and gloves, as the temperature is generally around -5. This is much
warmer than the temperature outside, which is between -15and -25. These
hotels give every visitor a pair of snow boots. They also have warm sleeping bags
because even the beds are made of ice.
(Paragraph two)
The first ice hotel was in Sweden. It was near a town called Kiruna, in the north of
the country. A Frenchman, Jannot Derid, first had the idea of a hotel there in
1990. He was visiting Kiruna to display his ice art. The art was in an ice-room,
built by a local hotel. Some visitors asked to sleep there. It became very popular
so every year the hotel company makes the ice building again. A team of 50 artists
builds every hotel. It takes them about six weeks. Last winter the 22nd hotel was
built. It had 47 rooms in total.
(Paragraph three)
The ice hotels are made from thick blocks of ice from local rivers. Ice and snow is
mixed together to make snice. This is used for putting the heavy ice blocks
together when the hotels are built, which is usually at the beginning of November.
Ice hotels open in January and close again in April. After that it is too warm and
the hotel melts.

For questions 71 80, you need to read this story about An Unexpected Dream
first.
A 21-year-old university student from England has signed a record deal with Decca
Records, just months after winning a TV talent contest in China. Mary Leaverland,
who was studying for a degree in Music and Chinese, went to Nanjing, China, in
September 2010. She was there to learn the language at Nanjing university as part
of her degree. While she was there a friend of hers took part in a TV game show.
Mary went too. At the local studios they saw people auditioning for the singing
contest Min Xing Chang Fan Tan (I Want To Sing To The Stars). She also met the
producer Jiang Li. He admired her voice and asked her to take part in the contest.
Mary had only started studying Mandarin a year before, so singing Chinese songs
was very hard for her. The whole contest lasted for a week. She had university
lessons in the morning and then went straight to the studios. The show was only
broadcast on TV in Chinas Jiangsu province. Despite this, the show had an
audience of around 70 million people.
In the final show, Mary received 900 prize money and used this to buy herself a
ticket back to England for the Christmas holidays. After a couple of peaceful
weeks relaxing at home, her mother phoned the local paper to tell them about her
daughters story. After 24 hours, Mary was in the national papers and within a
week she had a manager and was flying to New York for meetings with Decca
Records. Mary may finish her degree in the future, but is now writing her first
album, which she hopes to release in three months.
