What relationship do you see between genre and medium?

(and, remember to cite

specific examples from the podcast and video, using the time stamp as your source.)

Journal 7:
The podcast was interesting because the man in the video was unable to hear
and therefore has never heard any type of spoken language. Something that I have
always wondered is how do deaf people think? We all think using a language of
some type and it can easily vary from culture to culture but what happens when you
cant hear? This always makes me realize how easily it is to take some so innate to
us for granted. Also, from watching the short video, I noticed a bit of irony. The
video is titled words and prior to watching the video I was expecting to hear about
words in a formal type of writing. However, the video hardly had any words at all. In
fact, there were only a few statements here and there. Another thing that caught my
attention was the fact that every scene foreshadowed the next. An example was
when the man was screaming in the phone youre breaking up (Radiolab 0:53).
Following this scene you saw a couple that had obviously just broken up. The
podcast and the video taught me that language has extra linguistic characteristics.
By this, I mean that language is not just syntax in a sentence but rather a form of
communication through gestures such as: body language, facial expressions, and
emotion. An example of this is when the girls hair dryer stopped working (Radiolab
0:40). Although, she didnt say any words you could obviously tell that she was
upset through her actions of hitting the hair dryer and then throwing it. Toward the
end of the video I noticed that they really emphasized the word light. It started
with the man in the gym saying light as a feather and then proceeded with a
feather falling (Radiolab 2:09-2:14). The video continued to go on to reference light
through scenes such as: the little girl with the light, the stadium lights, and the light
bulb turning off. This actually changed my thought on genre because each scene
revolved around the word light but they were all different meanings. The genre
changed in every slide that dealt with light which was interesting to me. This can
also show that reflection of a term can vary from person to person which can change
the overall genre of a topic.
For my assignment three I am thinking about using mostly video sources
such as YouTube. I personally enjoy these types of media sources more due to their
ability to keep me entertained. The genre that I have enjoyed the most has been
screen presentations. I like to use them because if you know how to use a prezi the
right way it can really enhance your overall presentation. The prezi also gives the
audience something to follow rather than just listening to you talk. The zine was
very interesting to me due to its uniqueness.
