Impressions to partially edentulous typodonts

Learning objectives

- Remember how to take alginate impressions.


- Understand the importance of adequate impressions
and casts.
- Being able to evaluate the quality of a cast.

Materials

Partially edentulous typodonts.


o Get one and one lower fully dentate
typodont and remove the following
teeth: 16, 15, 14, 25, 26, 27, 28, 38, 37,
36, 35, 34, 45, 46, 47, 48.
o Fill alveoli up with silicone, wax, or
whatever, but in a way they ends with a
convex shape.

Rim-lock impression trays set.

Mouth mirrors.

Cutter/blades/X-acto blade.

Alginate (Ca37 or similar) with water and powder


dispensers (very important).

Satin white alginate mixing bowl.

Alginate spatula: rigid (metallic) with curved tip.

Type IV pink plaster (Vel-Mix Stone).

Type IV white plaster (Kerr Snow White n.1)

Plaster spatula: rigid (metallic) and straight.

Plaster knife.

Spontex wipe.

25x25x10 cm Tupperware.

General description of the


practice

Cast base mold (upper and lower).

Take one upper and one lower impression of an


edentulous typodont and cast them.
- Explanation by the teacher.
- Individual work.
- Assessment by the teacher.

Detailed description of the


practice

1.

Verify that we have all the necessary materials (you


MUST have the edentulous typodonts preparaed at
the beginning of the practice).

2.

Check the size of the trays and choose the most


appropriate.

3.

Mix alginate in the proper bowl and with the proper


spatula.

4.

Load the lower tray with the right amount of


alginate.

5.

Insert the tray into the patients mouth, ensuring


that there is enough space between tray walls and
oral structures.

6.

Remove, wash and disinfect impression.

7.

Assessment by the teacher.

8.

Plaster-wash the impression.

9.

Cast the impression with the proper bowl and


spatula, adding plaster in small increments with a
brush or small wax knife to ensure deep areas of
the impression are filled with plaster.

10. Once the impression is cast, add 1 cm more of


plaster (white one) to form the base.
11. Wait for the plaster to get a dull surface and put it
into the moist chamber (Tupperware + wet
spontex wipe) for 45 minutes.

12. Remove cast from the impression.


13. Cut cast at the plaster trimmers.
14. If necessary, add further plaster to get a good base
for the cast.
15. Repeat procedure with the upper impression.

- Impression quality.
- Cast quality.

Assessment criteria

Expected time

- Having all of the required materials.


- Grade from 0 to 10.
- 0 points: the student doesnt attend to the practice or
doesnt finish it in time or doesnt have the required
materials.

4 hours (two consecutive practices).
